My very out of the loop friend from Columbus apparently just went there yesterday for lunch.

I guess I'll let him know.

TH has been pretty much ignoring the rules since they reopened.  They had the most complaints of any business to County Health.

I'm not making this about politics, just letting my friend know it's possible his waitress was sick.

An employee had a friend get word out that 14 employees had tested positive, two bad examples being:

1. A waitress found out she tested positive during a shift, and told the tables she was waiting on that she had a family emergency instead of alerting them.

2. A female employee was found laying on the ground of the bathroom vomiting and had to be carried out of the restaurant.

There are also now screen shots of the texts he was sending to employees telling them not to believe media hype, rely on the facts he provides in the group chat, and stop thinking about it because stress weakens your immune system and increases your chances of getting it.

Oh my.....what a $hitty place and culture that is built by the owner.

I would hope that the rest of the servers and back of house staff get tested.

It's almost like the reopening of the economy is linked to quelling the pandemic.

It seems like indoor seating at restaurants is a major driver.

I have a friend who owns a gym, and he's limited capacity to 50%, offered free testing through some grant he found, and currently has zero clients to have tested positive since June 1. Most major outbreaks seem to be linked to indoor seating at/near bars over anything else.

Also - just a reminder that we should do our best to support smaller restaurants (Alea comes to mind) during this via takeout. So many of our fellow Clevelanders leveraged their lives to improve the already sterling dining reputation of our city, and we should do our best to return the favor during this time.

Each sector of the economy that opens creates more vectors for disease spread. We will not be able to manage the pandemic with restaurants/bars open. It's just not possible. People keep screaming about opening the schools but they don't want to make any sacrifices to ensure that children can get the in person education that they deserve.

Agreed.

Schools / extracurriculars for kids is the most complex issue we've faced to this point imo - but that's best for another thread lol

Chicago's Home of Chicken and Waffles on Prospect has closed and the property is for sale.

The Playhouse Square area is really being hit hard by closures, unsurprisingly.

^That’s a shame. The food was good and it was a nice space. That said, I’m not sure it relied much on theater traffic and was declining before Covid came around. It had already gone to pretty much just weekend opening and there were also some issues with the after-hours crowd there fighting and drag racing, plus a gun went off in there one time.

Has anyone heard anything from Heinen's? I have heard some bad things from people who work there and others within the neighborhood. I'm not sure if I've missed something but inside hasn't been touched from what I can tell and they were reportedly supposed to be open by now.

Mine requires masks and hasn't had any issues thus far.

^ hmm, it seems that masks would make it work, although i dk how well in a gym with cardio?

i'm going to put that in the 'outdoor dining' category of safety for now.

in other words, ok, but you are gambling.

i will come back to that in a month or two and ask how its going.

gyms are not open out here, but obviously its another thing we want to happen when it can.

I think last article Ken posted said opening right after Labor Day.

Had the Citizens Pie in East 4th, it was really really good.  Highly recommend.

Is the Jerk Chicken place in the City Club bldg open yet?  I think they were to open on July 4th, but I went by there around the 10th or so and they were still boarded shut.

^Great, thanks. I will swing by. Have been waiting for it to open since it was first announced.

They’ve been out of the jerk every time I’ve went.  Def get there early to get the actual jerk chicken.

@Pugu I went the first two days they were open. It is really good. They were out of jerk chicken the first day and they only had jerk cutlet for the jerk platter. It was very dry. The second day, they had jerk chicken and it was very good. The spicy and jerk fries were really good as well.

Red (the steakhouse) is returning to 417 Prospect. I thought they left for good.

"Red, the Steakhouse is scheduled to reopen its downtown Cleveland location Friday, Aug. 14. Socially-distanced indoor and rooftop dining, weather-permitting, will be available at the restaurant, which is at 417 Prospect Ave. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday...."

Heck’s expresss downtown is closed permanently

^Honestly, the quality of Heck's was going down hill prior to COVID. Glad to hear Red is opening back up.

Anyone know anything about this?

As a relatively recent OSU grad myself, this has my interest. I wonder what it is.

I ate there twice. The burgers were dry, overcooked and tasteless. Nowhere near The quality of Heck’s on Bridge.

Sad news, but 20 years in the restaurant biz is a great run

Bummer but for the price it really wasn't worth it on lunch break. Shake Shack isn't cheap either but I'm sure that didn't help.

LockKeepers, Marble Room, Il Venetian face uncertain futures

Six of Greater Cleveland's swankiest establishments that share the same owner have not reopened from the Coronavirus shutdown. Several sources with direct knowledge of the businesses' operations and finances said they doubted all of the establishments would reopen under their current ownership.

Valley View's LockKeepers plus downtown Cleveland's Marble Room Steaks and Raw Bar, Il Venetian, Il Venetian Doughnuts and Gelato, Marble Sushi Room, and St. Clair Ballroom closed back in mid-March along with all other Ohio restaurants and bars under health orders by Gov. Mike DeWine.

But none of those six restaurants, all owned by the Millennia Hospitality Group, LLC, reopened starting in mid-May during the partial relaxing of the COVID-19 pandemic-induced shutdown or after the wider reopening two months later.

Man I love Marble room.  This would be a real shame if it doesn’t open.  I wonder if they would consolidate and open a few of them while closing others?

I have not been inside, but it looks like a great space.  It is sad that so many great spaces downtown were abandoned, but fortunately most have been spared from the wrecking ball and re-purposed.  I wonder what other options are available for this space?  It might make a great lobby for a 5-star hotel.  All we are missing is the 5 star-hotel. ?

Even before COVID, the share of carry out versus dine-in was on the rise.   This wasn't good news for places that stuck to the semi-traditional business model of breaking even on the food and making money on the drinks.  High end places were at least as prone to this as anyone.

The virus boosted that trend like a CERN particle accelerator.  Since it was already in motion, it's not likely to retreat all that much.

I think there will always be a space for fine dining especially quality like Marble Room.

Of course there will, but there will be fallout.   Here the corporate owned ones may be at a disadvantage.

The Marble Room space was originally eyed by Cincy restaurateur Jeff Ruby, for one of his steakhouses - so wonder if he might be back in the mix if that unique space becomes available.  Ruby is a brand unto himself. Ate at his great Precinct in Cincinnati a few weeks ago - an old favorite - and can assure you that fine dining was alive, well, $$$$$, and very well attended by those who could get a reservation. Most couldn't.

Also, with regards to carryout - discussed above based on the trend... For anything other than the old carryout staples - pizza, Asian - or maybe sandwiches... - for sit down dining or fine dining - I. JUST. DON'T. GET. IT.  I love the restaurant experience and food in its restaurant setting. I cant be the only one. There is little good about carryout.

Even for my favorite sit - down restaurants, where I end up 2-4x a week, every week, I got carryout just 2x in 2 months while closed for COVID. Yuck! Its the experience + food.... not the food. For me, at least.
