Throwback to the 90s and 00's, this was more common then.  About 2010 or so post 1am nightlife began to turn nastier and a lot of bars don't find the patronage they get to be worth it, and close.   If anything, the restaurants that catered to post-closing time drinkers caught it even worse.

By Douglas Trattner on Tue, Dec 20, 2022

When Panini's closed its last downtown location on Huron Road, the Gateway District lost a prominent watering hole for sports fans. For more than 20 years, the neighborhood bar and grill was party central for many of the biggest moments in Cleveland sports.

A new chapter for the high-profile property begins in February, when Parlay on Ninth (840 Huron Rd.) opens its doors.

Downtown continues to empty out

Downtown does not continue to to empty out. Nauti just got stale. The wife and I used to go all the time. The food deteriorated, the place started to smell bad and people stopped going. In the restaurant industry, if you don’t change your business model every 5-10 years, someone else comes along and does whatever your doing better than what you’re doing.

Restaurants come and go all the time.  Even in the suburbs.

They pretty much indicated that business worsened with so many people working from home. The amount of jobs moving the suburbs like Medical Mutual doesn't help either

1 hour ago, AsDustinFoxWouldSay said:

And yet, Agave & Rye and Acqua di Luca have both opened in the past year within a block or so of Nauti and seem to be doing great (and with the reviews to match).

They can indicate whatever they like, but the pandemic was a real equalizer in shaking out a lot of establishments that were stale and/or just hanging on in the first place. And with the thousands of jobs going into the parking lot that loss of the owners of Nauti also blamed for their plight, I think we’ll see that space grabbed up without too much delay.

And Rock Bottom closed in Chicago last week.

And Ebisu Sushi closed last year in San Diego.

And Greenpoint closed recently in Brooklyn.

And APL closed in LA last year.

s**t happens. Restaurants have turnover. Downtowns survive.

Sit down restaurants were losing out to carryout/delivery even before the virus, though it certainly accelerated the trend.   The idea that eating need not be a collective activity has been a megatrend since microwaves became popular.

Drinking (alcohol) is still a social activity, more often than not.   But people get into that business thinking it's a lot easier than it is, and all too often make the primary mistake of treating the cash like cash.

The intersection point:   the traditional restaurant business model of breaking even on the food and making money on drinks doesn't work as well when people aren't sitting down to eat.  That's leading to additional fallout.

This is well deserved...
