I've seen them in other parts of the world all along.  I think in the US they got a bad name because the operators tend to cut cost and quality.    Elsewhere in the world it's still done right.

btw my spouse just said the place by the dayton mall opened and closed so you have to get your conveyor on in parma. 🙌

True. I moved over here from England 20 years ago and they were all over the place in London, Manchester etc and people were done with them already. That said, you still see them there, but only the good ones survived, just like the rest of the world. I last ate at one in Singapore just before Covid.

I had lunch at a small one in Aachen Germany this past summer.  Not where I would expect good sushi, let alone conveyor belt sushi...but it was quite good!

The Judith, a café by Room Service, is set to open in Cleveland

The Judith, a café planned in Cleveland's Detroit Shoreway neighborhood, is planning to open next month.

Customers can expect to try The Judith for the first time on Feb. 10. The restaurant has been in the works for about a year from co-owners Jennie Doran and Andrew Worm, who are married.

Doran and Worm also own Room Service, a lifestyle boutique located in Shaker Heights. Expect some similarities between the two locations.

^ I hope that place is a real success, but I’m sorry, as someone who was a teenager when Life of Brian came out, the name Judith will never not conjure up a certain image and not be funny. It’s still a shorthand term that me and my old mates use to this day.

Man, some of you are pretty harsh about the conveyor-belt sushi place.  Its the first one in Cleveland--so its great we have this option---though I wish it were Downtown instead of all the way out at Broadview Rd and Pleasant Valley in Parma. I'll happily try it out sometime.  It sounds like a fun place and who cares if its 'no longer cool'--part of what makes Cleveland cool is we don't care about cool.

Sterle’s to be demolished

By Ken Prendergast / January 25, 2023

If the demolition permit application filed Jan. 20 with the city wasn’t enough of an indication, the heavy equipment in the parking lot of Frank Sterle’s Slovenian Country House certainly is.

A longtime ethnic and cultural institution, not only for the neighborhood but for the entire metro area, is coming down. And that breaks the hearts of Slovenians, Croats and others who grew up in the St. Clair-Superior neighborhood. Among those is Joe Cimperman, president of the pro-immigration economic development organization Global Cleveland and a former Cleveland city councilman. He grew up nearby on East 74th Street near St. Clair Avenue.

Some good news from the Euclid Arcades

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Stone Fruit Coffee was in jeopardy of closing?

Is the lack of retail seriously a result of landlords squeezing each dime of rent money from the renters or do people living downtown just not step outside their apartments at all? Suburbanites, on social media atleast, make it clear they want nothing to do with downtown unless it's drinking or a ball game. I honestly wonder how retail in downtown Cleveland is even feasible sometimes.

Yes, they had announced they were closing. My understanding is that D*ck Pace retired from running the Arcades. CBRE has taken over and is dramatically raises rents as leases come up. The local shops can’t afford it and are closing. Hopefully sanity prevails before it gets much worse.

Also, I am a suburbanite that cares very much about the health and vitality of downtown and the rest of the city.

I just fail to understand whatsoever how pushing out your client because of increased rent only to have your space empty for years is better than having actual cash flows from the current renter. These spaces sit empty for years as a result.

There are mixed results searching for what tax advantages exist to incentivize keeping retail space empty. But interestingly there is momentum in the other direction to penalize landlords who maintain vacant storefronts for extended periods of time, interesting little article here:

What is the foot traffic like over there during workdays? I'm sure it is practically nonexistent on weekends. Just curious if this place will get any business because I always get sad seeing the hard work and effort put into opening something new when I feel it is doomed from the start.

Plus I’m pretty sure Optima is still the owner. (Corrupt Ukrainian oligarch money.)

Backstory:   there were two stand alone ATs left in the USA, perhaps the world:  Garfield Heights and Cuyahoga Falls.

They were both owned by the same guy.

He was working at Garfield one night in 2021, shorthanded again.    Someone karened the condition of the dining room.

That was the last straw.    He closed it to focus on Cuyahoga Falls, which has a drive through.

I miss Arthur Treachers- used to get it a lot when it was located on Clark.  I don't get to Cuyahoga Falls/Garfield Heights too often, and I don't like AT enough to go there!

Wolf Pack Chorus restaurant opens in Cleveland's Little Italy neighborhood

The former Club Isabella spot in Cleveland's Little Italy neighborhood has come back to life as a restaurant called Wolf Pack Chorus.

A company called 2175 Cornell LLC, led by Cushman Wakefield Cresco principal Rico Pietro and Loomis Cos. president Erik Loomis, acquired the former Club Isabella building last year for $330,000, according to county records.

As the duo closed on its acquisition of the building, Pietro expressed a desire to convert the property into laboratory space to court companies looking to move near Cleveland Clinic and University Hospital. Instead, Pietro and Loomis began marketing the building for restaurants after entering a $765,000 mortgage with Civista Bank on the property at 2175 Cornell Road.

Battr to Bring Bubble Waffles, Sweet Korean Crepes, Gelato to Tremont

“We’ve seen some things in Los Angeles that seem to work and we want to bring it to Cleveland.”

By Douglas Trattner on Mon, Mar 13, 2023

Issa Elkhatib and his partners have signed a lease for 910 Literary Rd. in Tremont, the next-door neighbor to the Lola/Lolita building that is now in the hands of Buildings and Food. Elkhatib’s plans for the 750-square-foot storefront call for bringing some interesting sweets into the neighborhood.

“From a customer perspective, you really can’t find a good dessert place in Ohio City and Tremont, outside of Mitchell’s Ice Cream, so we think this is a good fit,” says Elkhatib.

Battr, as the business is called, will offer bubble waffles, Korean-style crepes, gelato and organic teas.

“Obviously, there’s a fad going on with bubble waffles and crepes but we want to make it cool,” adds Elkhatib. “We’ve seen some things in Los Angeles that seem to work and we want to bring it to Cleveland.”

Indie on East 4th rebranding already. I liked the place and we ate there often. It was clear it didn’t resonate with people though, as it was never busy, even on a weekend night.
For me, the biggest mistake they made was switching out the barstools after only 6 months or so. The original ones were plush and comfortable, with a backrest too. They replaced them with the absolute worst kind of rock-hard, unaccommodating seats possible. Something more suited to a prison cafeteria. It was almost like they wanted people to not sit at the bar.

It just felt generic. I’m really glad they are changing course. Their other restaurants are great.
