I was driving down W. 25th yesterday and saw a large number of folks rallying outside of Kan Zaman with "Free Palestine" signs and other slogans.  Guess it was the tail end of this event....

you need a little belgian frites shack.

especially in this weather.

that is all.

But we do...Bar Centro...it is not a shack, but I am sure the prices are lower than the above...

you sure? i know that's new. yeah prob all-around cheaper too, but i don't think it's belgian is it? i thought bc had pizza and stuff?

even tho bc serves the frites, i'd find it surprizing if the (typical belgian frites shack) options are this extensive:

Pomegranate Teriyaki

Remoulade

Irish Curry

Vietnamese Pineapple Mayo

Roasted Garlic Mayo

Rosemary Garlic Mayo

Pesto Mayo

Dill Lemon Mayo

Smoked Eggplant Mayo

Curry Ketchup

Sweet Mango Chutney Mayo

Honey Mustard Mayo

Sweet Chili Sauce

Sundried Tomato Mayo

Horseradish Mayo

Peanut Satay Sauce

Sambal Olek - Hot Chili Paste

Mexican Ketchup

Wasabi Mayo

Dijon Mustard

War Sauce frites sauce, peanut satay sauce & onion

Curry Ketchup Especial frites sauce, curry ketchup & onion

Combo Sauce

Any Three Sauces   2.00

Small Poutine   4.50

Large Poutine   5.50

Move back and open one.

But if you do, sell beer too.  Fries are good, but so much better with beer.

So frites 'eh?

Doing some menu engineering right now

OK,  Belgian fries are traditionally only served with a few of the above sauces (usually the mayo, and curry, and maybe a few more) so thats just Frau Frau! Comeone MrNYC are you a little too much in a NY state of mind? Bar Centro is next to the Bier Markt so while the menu has Roman dishes to go with the wine, there are also dishes to go with the Belgian beer (namely the pomme frittes and the mussells)

Went to the Euc on saturday night, and though I was never at the original version, I could understand Pope's dislike for the place.  Seems a bit too clean, but I think as it gets some more wear and tear under it's belt it may seem a little bit less offensive.  Mr. Stress is playing there this saturday night, so that should be a good time.

Also, some of the old graffitti is still in the bathrooms, one I though was particularly humorous:

"BK is a ball bag."

^ I don't share your sense of humor.

Oh man, what are the chances BK?

To add another point to the Euclid Tavern experience, I just have to say that the scale of the street at that part of Euclid Avenue is great.  The Ford plant looming over the street, the old school Euc and Mi Pueble signs (both with flashing neon), 4 and 5 story buildings on the north side, and when the CIA/MVRDV addition, retail/residential officeDA, and MOCA/FOA are completed it will really add to the already interesting mix that's going on there.

Hanging out in dive bars and viewing the most contemporary of architecture right outside the window will be quite enjoyable.  And all this a quick Red or Silver Line ride from home and work in Ohio City and Downtown.  Hell yes.

OMG if fry shacks opened up all over Cleveland like they exist in Amsterdam, we'd be even fatter than we already are!

Oh, and Bar Cento's pommes frites come with curry, chili, and garlic mayos and ketchup.

I love frites but can we please get more non-mayo options? I can only spend so much time on the elliptical!

You're such a Diva!  LOL

You sound like my cousin.  She want to look good, yet not sweat!

The fries at the recently opened "Wine Bar" (couldn't they have picked a more exciting name?) in Rocky River include a side of cabernet ketchup. And they were pretty tasty.  But that's in the burbs, you can revoke my membership on here for recommending it :)  Just kidding!

Nah, River gets a pass - the residential areas north of I-90 are nice, the Beachcliff/Avalon Drive area is gorgeous, and their "downtown" is a great little area that's relatively pedestrian-friendly. Now if we could only get Rocky River Brewing Company to move somewhere more accessible than the horrid stretch on Center Ridge...

It is horrid, and it's not gotten better over the years.  Have you been to Stino Da Napoli's?

Their fish and chicken dishes are lovely and you choose which you want with your meal, the side/starter salad OR pasta, so there you go.

Not yet - I've heard great things about it but thanks to my metabolism bailing a few years ago, I have to watch my pasta intake.

MayDay, you act like your KJP's or Florida Guys age!  :-P  You're young, fit and taught, your metabolism couldn't have changed that much.

i'm in a little too much of a ny state of mind about belgian fries?

actually now that i think about it a place like that would have been a better idea among the east bank flats bars back in the old days.

I only said that b/c of this and THEN the WSM comparison (there is none!!!) I have my eye on you...(kidding!)

ok but next time keep in mind belgian fries come from.....not ny!!!!!

duhhhhhhhhhh. But the place you posted was IN NY

seems to me even regular fry stands like that do well in ohio in the summer, like at fairs & carnivals.

I'm glad someone else is discovering how great the Market Cafe is.  Me, I went to Crop, which clearly needs some discovery by the downtown lunch crowd as every time I go for lunch there are barely a handful of tables there.  The food is really fantastic and prices are reasonable, I don't know why people aren't going there.  Is it just lack of information?  Most new places generate a lot of interest in my experience.

  Where is this Crop place?

Some news about Stone Mad as well as Brothers Lounge.  Things are shaping up!

Get ready to dive into two of Cleveland's most eagerly awaited watering holes: Stone Mad (1306 West 65th Street), a paean to painstaking craftsmanship in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood, and Brothers Lounge (11609 Detroit Avenue, 216-470-1681), the no-expense-spared tavern and music hall near Detroit and West 117th. With extensive renovations happening on both vintage properties, the projects have evolved into long, slow labors of love.

Last night's wine dinner at Bar Cento was a huge success!  A full house was treated to a 7-course 4.5 hr long meal!  $45 got you ALL of this!  It was a huge steal and please check out the website-or better yet BM/BC for future events.  FYI there is a beer-paired dinner end of February.

To top the evening off, this businessman for Tampa, FL came in after having a drink at GLBC.  It was late and he wanted food so they sent him to us.  He apparently is in Cleveland rather often and makes it a point to go to GLBC. Not only was he thrilled to try our food and beers, but he told me, "You guys have a fantastic city!"  OMG, as if the many compliments and local support for BM/BC wasn't great to see last night, this was the icing on the delicious cake!

Our city IS awesome!    8-)

I saw the post about the thing on 2/28 and am going to try to go to that if I'm not working, that sounds fun.  But which shirt to wear, Black Crowes or Zeppelin.

My little gripe around here is wondering why places put away the patio chairs come labor day. It is as if they want to be cold and miserable. I say bring it on.

Peabody says it's a little gripe, but for me it's a big gripe.  I think us Clevelanders could do a much better job embracing the cold as it's one of the things that makes us who we are.  On that note, there was a picture posted in this thread > http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,15178.0/topicseen.html regarding the vitality of a neighborhood in Buffalo known as Elmwood Village.

In addition to a beautiful neighborhood, they have real live people sitting outside with snow on the ground!

THAT PICTURE WAS TAKEN IN JUNE!

I just noticed a couple of days ago a fairly nondescript-looking restaurant in the NW corner of the Winton Manor bldg on Prospect.  It is called simply "Middle East Restaurant".  The signs were basically posterboards in the windows.  I wondered if I have somehow never noticed this place, or if it just recently opened.  Anyone know?

It's a Cleveland classic - I wish I worked closer, since I used to go all the time when I worked in the Caxton Building. The decor is dated (as in they have their framed "Cleveland Magazine Best Restaurant" awards from 1977, but it's clean where it needs to be and the food is great. It's easy to overlook, that's for sure but don't let that stop you. Let me put it this way, I was having lunch with a friend a few years ago when all of a sudden four or five black stretch limos pulled up. Out poured dozens of women wearing black abayas (robe, veil, headdress) who swooped in, each grabbing bags of takeout and bolted out the door. Everyone in the place was like "WTF?" - turns out one of the sultans from Saudi Arabia was in town and his harem wanted to grab some Lebanese food for takeout - and they like Middle East. Who knew?

June in Buffalo?!  HAHAHA!  One of the best replies ever!

Anyways, I don't know if I'd go so far to ask Clevelanders to embrace the cold but at least accept it since we all know it's coming Nov-Mar!  Why do we act so suprised when it's 20 in February?!  OMG!

Anyways, BM/BC's patio is rather busy with smokers--one of the best things to increase street life was pushing smokers outside!

Let's see, the news this morning b*tched about the rain despite 60 degree weather in Feb, and then 2 seconds later b*tched about 25 degree weather next week...  Ah I'd love to smack them!

About Middle East, yes, it's good stuff, the people are friendly and the decor probably hasn't changed in decades!  The exterior was more defined before the manor was rehabbed and I wish they'd do something more to increase the restaurant's visibility because you're right, you'd hardly notice it's there!

I used to walk over for lunch when I worked at CSU and I never saw another soul...

In addition to a beautiful neighborhood, they have real live people sitting outside with snow on the ground!

It helps that they are sitting beneath a radiant heater (notice the long, black suspended device above the patrons.  But yes, we need more places suitable for lingering outdoors in the wintertime.

Stopped in the Market Cafe in Amtrust (Ohio Savings) Plaza on East 9th. Highly recommended - great, light-filled space with multiple seating options from communal "high tops" to bar seating to regular dining. Approximately 5-ish different stations offering pretty much everything under the sun - I grabbed a slice of philly/steak pizza (pretty good) and an order of chickpea salad with tomato, artichoke, and basil (deeee-fricking-lish!).

One concern would be the ventilation - with all the food being prepped in the space, had I stayed in my coat would have smelled like my lunch. Only complaint is the clientele: the herds of f#ckingly oblivious lower management types who would stand in the middle of a walkway ensuring no one could escape, or they'd try to walk in one direction with their head completely turned in the other all the while carrying a tray of food they obviously weren't too attached to. Yeah folks, I'm just another person in the world - please let me get out of your way and please don't chuck your soup on me - that's all I ask :-)

I just got back and I reek of food.

how are the vittles? say compared to Nates? I love Nates.

middle east has been there for a long time hasn't it?

i love middle eastern food. i even have a turkish restaurant right below my apt building and although they are nice folks it's nothing compared to nate's.

By the way, I passed by Bricco yesterday (The one they've been working on, on the south side of Euclid at Playhouse Square).... The construction front was off and the place looks fantastic inside.  A sign at the front door said they will be open February 16.  This is the link to their akron website where they do mention the Cleveland site. I'd assume same menu.  I might have to check this out when me and the woman go to Wicked in early March.

Walked by it this morning and it does look great!  I'm excited to see their signage/awnings, as it will liven up the Euclid face of the Hanna that has been dead for some time.

btw saw wicked sunday and it was awesome!  it's amazing how the theatre was sold-out but once you walk outside, it's like a few thousand people just vanished!  This is another discussion for another topic and time and place.  I can't wait until spring to see al fresco dining again!

Wasn't it like 20 degrees on Sunday? Brrr!!! I've seen a few shows and it seemed like quite a few people went to some of the places nearby like Star and Hamiltons (though I'm really not a fan of Hamiltons - there was a bald bartender who was a royally p!ssy b!tch to my friends and I).

Wasn't it like 20 degrees on Sunday? Brrr!!!

That's why I'm insisting on dropping off my wife, sis in law and mom in law tonight to see Wicked. Facilitating an easy theater experience is important in helping the in-laws understand that downtowns provide more charm than the suburban South.

By the way, the in-laws are in town to help us with our newborn baby girl. My wife gave birth last Thursday to the newest Ohio City resident.

Still, the parking deck behind the theaters is a killer to street life on Euclid. Build a new deck on the south side of Euclid, slightly off-center from the theaters, with some restaurants and theater gift shops in between and watch the sales go up -- in any weather.

P.S. I saw Wicked at London's Apollo Victoria Theatre. Great show, good theater (I think the Palace, State, Allen and Ohio theaters are more ornate and more beautiful), but the Victoria Station-area neighborhood kicked the ass of Playhouse Square. The amenities, diverse land uses, street life, density, etc. were remarkable.

Congrats 3231.

Congratulations 3231!
