dewey's is an above average pizza.  More so if you are looking at a specialty pizza.  The bbq chicken and socrates revenge (named after socrates johnson I think :-D) are good and as previously stated, the micro brews are great too.  If you want a classic pizza, maybe not my first choice.  In cleveland hts, I would go down the street to Marotta's instead, or drive to Geraci's in Universty Hts.

Spot on, although I think that Marotta's blows away even Geraci's (which is also good).

^ sounds like the Buckeye Beer Engine is close to you...now there's a good draft list, plus it appears to be family friendly.

Yeah, I love the beer engine, but I consider it more of a bar, and I feel weird taking a 7 month old to a bar.

Just personal preference, though we have taken the baby to Southside during the day for brunch.  I guess it just depends on how the vibe feels.

Southside during the day = restaurant

Southside at night = bar

Beer Engine, I guess would be the same way, but Dewey's at night is still a restaurant.

So it is different.

^Also, Beer engine only has like 4 booths, and 3 or 4 low tables, which are essential for babies.  Everything else is bar seating or high tops, which won't work.

Lawd.....I can see it now.

That thought has Jerry Springer written all over it!

I don't think it is strange or poor taste to see children in a bar area or even sitting at the bar with their parents, especially if food is served. You can't hide from children the fact that some people (adults) drink alcohol , so what's the big deal about children being in a bar anyway?

On one hand, I think its probably a good thing to take children to a bar. It takes away the mystery, shows them it can be a normal thing that adults do, and makes drinking less of a big deal. Perhaps if more parents adopted that attitude, you would see a lot less binge drinking in young people.

Only if the bar has a kind of vulgar "pickup" clientel culture, would I think it strange or poor taste to see children at a bar.

^Well, logistically, babies need a high chair (not a booster seat) or a sling for the carrier, so bar seating is out for the time being.

I am sorry, but an infant at a literally, at the bar-is a bit much. I think a supervised baby could go to the beer engine and sit at a table if it were not real busy or rowdy-daytime or early dinner. On a few occasions at Lolita/Bar Cento- like places in NY, I have seen young children at the bar eating dinner (adult meals no less) with their parents. It was different than what you see around here, but not eyebrow raising either given the children knew how to act.

edit: you chould check out Bar Cento on Tues evenings. While your little one is too young to make pizza as part of the Jr. Iron chef promotion, it is very child friendly that evening.

the big difference in cleveland now: the bars are smoke free.

you wouldn't usually find parents exposing young children to smoke.  but, children and babies at bars are very common in other states where smoking isn't permitted.

oh if only I could cue the Vulpster underage drunk picture from "show a picture of yourself".

yeah as long as food is served and common sense is used, i have no problems with children and especially teens being around taverns/bars while adults are drinking. it's best for alcohol to be seen more often in that context.

too often in american culture alcohol is held back from teens, kept a mystery and put up as a forbidden attraction.

I take my 6-month-old everywhere with me!  She's been to Bar Cento, GLBC, and... well, yeah, I don't get out much anymore, but still, I feel comfortable with taking her to the right types of bars.  If there was smoking, no way.

There is a sign in the Bridgeview building on w9 that a Phoenix Coffee shop will be opening soon (this is the former Brigade space)...

i don't know if they are taking the whole space or not, but it should be a good location.

i love phoenix coffee. they seem to be on a retail rampage as they'll now have 2 stores downtown, up from zero one year ago.

Actually 3, up from 1 a year ago.  They have a location on Superior around E. 21st-22nd.

^ How is the one ~E21st? For some reason I always thought it was just a wholesale outlet without tables, although I think that was a total fabrication in my mind. I was probably confusing it with the Arabica that used to be on Prospect ~E40th or so.

It's a regular cafe.  Decent atmosphere, good as always Phoenix coffee.

^free wireless last time I was there too

Well.. back to two.  Closing Superior and e. 21.

Phoenix rising at two new downtown spots

By JOHN BOOTH

4:30 am, April 21, 2008

Phoenix Coffee plans to open two coffee shops this year in downtown Cleveland, but will close its original Superior Avenue location at month’s end.

The Cleveland-based chain’s long-planned shop at 1700 E. Ninth St. is set to open May 5, said CEO Sarah Wilson-Jones, and it’s leased space at 300 W. Ninth St. for a shop that could open by September.

^shouldn't that be "1300 W. 9th?" not "300"?

No...the new store will be for boaters, floating on top of an old part of W. 9th St. recently discovered under the lake.

Wow, I'm in the same boat as MTS today. I almost bought that.

Too bad, but Artefino is right across the street so there is still coffee in that area.

Are they being forced to take that giant triangular sign down at the new store?  I was driving down E. 9th tonight and it was on some crane type thing and a big vinyl sign is now hung flush with the wall.  I couldn't tell if they moving it or removing it.

Well, W. 9th St. used to be Water St. ;)

^^  The sign on East 9th is back.

  • 2 weeks later...

The former Machu Picchu space on East 8th between Euclid and Prospect is being rennovated. Maybe Machu Picchu is reopening. Their decision to open at the peek of Euclid corridor construction made no sense. Now that construction on the south side of the street is basically done, the location could work.

Has anyone ever ate at Machu Pichu? And if so, how was the food.  I went to go there a few months but it was already closed.

I ate there once, and enjoyed it.  I had some sort of Peruvian version of paella.

Food is pricey but tasty. Decor is rather blah; I felt like I was in my grandma's basement or something.

Try searching the forum, there were a few other reviews from a year back or so IIRC.

I really enjoyed Machu Pichu.  I heard they had actually started doing pretty well (there business went up some ungodly percent when they added all the exterior signage on E.8th), and just got killed when the ECP landed on their doorstep.  I had heard awhile back that they were looking for another location and wanted to reopen... Maybe they figure they'll just reopen there now that work is finishing up... I'll see what i can find out.

There is a sign in the window of the Phoenix coffee on East 9th street saying they will be open tomorrow (Tuesday May 6th)

yup, definitely open. Checked it out today.

On a new note, on Coventry there is some type of wine/tapas bar going in the old Utrecht Space. Can't remember the name of it off-hand. Had the now hiring sign up in the window. Anywho, should be a welcomed contrast to the typical bar and grill college places on coventry.

I just heard that this is going to be some type of sports restaraunt / bar...

Great, just what Gateway needs yet another sports bar. How many sports bars can fans support?

As many as they can until residential pops up and taste specific restaurants open up shop.  I think now that the East Ninth has an anchor, and a hotel, there will need to be restaurants withing walking distance that aren't sports themed now that East 4th is 90% complete.

The Huron/Prospect & possibly Bolivar (if it's zoned for that) are rip for more residential and mixed use development now.

what this area needs is 1 true sports bar.  instead, it is a bunch of bars that show sports and are located near the venues.

I think it's going to be Bodega.  Article I read in the Coventry neighborhood rag is that it'll be a tapas bar with occasional jazz and maybe martinis.  Definitely a welcome change of pace for the street.

^agreed, if it is as you report!

Also, on W. 58th & Detroit, what was the new Snickers and then became Cheddars is now Crazy Mac's Cafe.  WTF???

Not only is this incredibly confusing for anyone trying to look the place up, but for those of us who have been there, does Crazy Mac's Cafe sound like an appropriate name for this restaurant?  My vote is an emphatic NO!

^I believe there was some sort of trademark/copyright issue with a restaurant that had already claimed "Cheddars".

yes, a restaurant chain in Texas. Its all on their website.

We have a cheddar's right here in Ohio, in Mansfield.  I was wondering how long it would be til someone sent them a cease & desist letter, I couldn't believe they didn't even check to see if someone else owned that name.

ok, so they had issues with the Snickers name and with the Cheddars name, so now they go with a name that no one in their right mind would use!

I don't think it matters much. From what I've heard from people who have been there recently the mac & cheese is really just "ok" not "great" and the service continues to be spotty.  With that and the multiple name changes, they probably won't be able to survive that long.

They should call it Decent Mac Shack.

I agree. The new name is deplorable. While it shouldn't matter, I do not think I could go to a place with "Crazy" in the name. At least they did not spell Crazy with a "K".

FYI, West Side Market Cafe is rolling out a newly-expanded menu soon.  Last time I was there, our server (no, it wasn't the cute hippie girl, unfortunately) said that they were putting the final touches on it.
