November 20, 200816 yr I went to the MarketCafe at the Amtrust building for the first time. Wow what a great space that is. It looks like they dumped a bunch of money into it. I hope the downtown community supports it. Does anyone know how they are doing, does it look like it will be successful? And are they open in the evening?
November 20, 200816 yr I believe they did away with their later hours and wine bar that was open later (or all together), can anyone verify...
November 20, 200816 yr Not sure, but the place is packed (occasionally annoying so) at lunch - a good problem to have. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
November 20, 200816 yr I've never seen it open walking past outside of business hours..... I wish it were :(
November 20, 200816 yr yeah thats what I thought as far as the evenings go, but at least its busy during lunch hour. It's hard to find a place downtown in the evening that's not a bar, where you can sit back, throw down some wine and have a conversation with someone without having to compete with loud music or a game that's on a tv big enough to pull your car in front of.
November 20, 200816 yr They tried it for awhile but there was no business. They also did wine events for a little while but I haven't seen an ad for one of those in some time so I bet they discontinued their evening business. It is a great place.
November 25, 200816 yr Anyone know anything about Krazy Mac's Cafe closing? The cleveland.com food forum has some talk about it. Their website now only lists an Elyria location, but at the bottom of the home page is says "We're cooking up a new location in Cleveland...stay hungry!"
November 25, 200816 yr No, but my friend went there last week with her new neighbor and they BOTH thought the food was bad and service was terrible. she called me to ask if I knew anything about it and I told her the food was bad and the service worse, and I would have told her not to go there if she had called me first. It sounds so good, a restaurant based around varieties of mac & cheese, but it's just. not.
November 26, 200816 yr well you can do the niche IF (giant if) you do it really well. Think Melt. Went there Sat night and waited 1.5 hours for a table for only 4. The wait was fine b/c the beer is great. Apparently the mac and cheese place did not pull it together. Melt's service has actually gotten better. Little less hipster, surly, hungover, pierced d-bag, little more cheerful, (still hungover and pierced) but professional server.
November 26, 200816 yr Melt is a great example of how to do it mostly right and still keep the customers coming back. Why do people (including me) wait over an hour for a table and then another hour for their food? Because it's GREAT FOOD and like you said, a full bar helps a lot. The surly, pierced servers there have never bothered me in the least, only the wait. And my check has never been incorrect. Can't say the same about any of those things (food/service/check) at Crazy Mac's.
November 26, 200816 yr Does anyone know if Crazy Mac's is temporarily closed? I drove by last night and i thougth i saw a renovation sign, but it might have been a different building. Furthermore, the website only lists the Elyria location. ANy info would help. Thanks
November 26, 200816 yr It's a shame if Krazy Mac's (still hate that name) has gone under, but I have to agree with the above sentiments that it just wasn't executed all that well in terms of service or tastiness.
November 26, 200816 yr Heres the scoop from the PD with Krazy Mac's (says they were doing well, and probably moving somewhere in Lakewood) Krazy Mac's closes Detroit Avenue location to concentrate on what it does best by Debbi Snook/Plain Dealer Reporter Tuesday November 25, 2008, 5:24 PM Hold the mac, and the cheese. Krazy Mac's Cafe, a mecca for the great melted American dish, closed its doors Saturday night and won't reopen at the same location, 5800 Detroit Ave., Cleveland. Owner Ron Heinbaugh, who has been through several venue changes in the last few years, said he was overwhelmed by the inventory demands of two menus -- Krazy Mac's 20 versions and dishes from the precursor, Snicker's -- as well as the size of the 10,000-square-foot restaurant. November 26, 200816 yr Has anyone been to the Backstage Cafe at the Agora yet? I was told they were open now, although their official "grand opening" isn't until the 29th. I work right by there and was thinking about going there for lunch sometime soon, but from my vantage point across the street it shows no sign of activity.
November 26, 200816 yr ^There is a MidTown holiday open house there next week, so I will check it out then if I am able to make it.
December 3, 200816 yr FYI - Stone Mad has a new Happy Hour M-F from 4-7 featuring a variety of drink specials, including $2 goblets of Brooklyn IPA as well as a variety of food specials priced between $4 & $5.
December 4, 200816 yr From clevescene.com: Jonathon Sawyer is dissolving his partnership with Sam McNulty and Bar Cento (1948 W. 25th St., 216.274.1010). After the first of the year, the chef will no longer have any connection to the wildly successful restaurant. Sawyer says he intended all along to bow out when his new restaurant, Greenhouse Tavern, neared its opening date. "I thought I might be able to handle both places," Sawyer told me, "but I just don't have the resources and people to do both well." Mike Nowak, who has cooked alongside Sawyer since the beginning, will take over. http://clevescene.com/stories/15/83/foodie-news
December 5, 200816 yr Spotted at Detroit Ave & W. 52nd tonight: COMING BACK SOON: THE BIG EGG! (now if Fagan's, St. Pat's in the Flats, and the Playdium reopen, I can relive nearly every weekend of my early 20's)
December 5, 200816 yr Big Egg. this was before my time in Cleveland. But the word"big" combined with "egg" sounds good to me, plus the location is most convienient.
December 5, 200816 yr Big Egg. this was before my time in Cleveland. But the word"big" combined with "egg" sounds good to me, plus the location is most convienient. Ohhhhhhh HUSH! Buckeye1...i feel you on that!
December 5, 200816 yr ^But there was also an Irish bar on the corner across from Fagan's that was called St. Pat's, then O'Connor's Pub, unless my memory fails me. Pat's is still on W 3rd as far as I know.
December 5, 200816 yr I heard the Big Egg was coming back. The food was never a reason to go and now that I'm not into the late night, 2am post-bar breakfast, I don't miss it. The last time I went there was after a first date and I had a small bug cooked into my pancakes. Hopefully the new version will be better.
December 5, 200816 yr Indigo Imp Brewing sent out this email last night, they look to finally be selling  Great Beer Lovers and Indigo Imp Supporters, We are happy to announce that we finally have beer to sell!! The last couple months have been spent brewing, bottling, and waiting, waiting, waiting for bottle labels to come in. They arrived this week. We are offering a limited amount of Blonde Bombshell and Winter Solstice for sale from the brewery store on Friday Dec. 5th From 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm. The cost is $8.99 for a six pack plus tax. Cash Only. This sale is in advance of any retail store sales and is being advertised to people who have signed our online form and the brewery's immediate neighbors. A note about the beer: Indigo Imp Brewery produces unfiltered, naturally carbonated beer in open fermentors. The beers are complex in flavor and aroma yet surprisingly smooth and especially delicious when paired with cheese and other foods. We recommend serving our beer at 45-55 deg.f. and also recommend pouring it slowly into a glass, leaving the yeast sediment in the bottle. Keep checking the web site for upcoming events and where to buy Indigo Imp beers. Cheers, Matt & Kathy Chappel "Give Me An Imp!"
December 5, 200816 yr I thought Pat's in the Flats was still open. I bike/drive by there often, and have only seen it open a few times. The building, especially the second floor, really looks like it's deteriorating quickly. The website has a few December events.
December 5, 200816 yr where is the Indigo Imp Brewery? MTS- for the record, I am more than old enough to be a big egg customer, I just did not live here when it was open.

December 10, 200816 yr From newsnet5.com: Lockkeepers Restaurant Reopens; Dante Moves To Tremont http://www.newsnet5.com/news/18236733/detail.html VALLEY VIEW, Ohio -- Lockkeepers Restaurant is reopening in northeast Ohio. The restaurant will return to its original location on Rockside Road in 2009, replacing Dante restaurant. Dante has been at the location for over a year. Chef Dante Boccuzzi plans to relocate his signature restaurant to Tremont this spring. It will be located at the historic bank building at 2247 Professor St. "The transition is already in motion." said Malisse Sinito, who is coming back to run Lockkeepers. The restaurant will not close during the change. All gift certificates will be honored. Lockkeepers originally opened in 1992 in an antiquated building on the Ohio & Erie Canal. Sinito was its opening chef and manager until the late 1990s when she retired to raise her children. In 2007, Lockkeeper's closed and Dante opened in its space. ............ Dante will be moving into the bank building (masonry with pillared entry and copper cornice) below: clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram

Oh my God, I love Chanterelle. They have this seafood sausage that is to die for!! I can't wait to try this place, opps, Table 45, I love you, but I will have to cheat on you! I'm disappointed that the website has little information...ugh :x :x www.albatrosbrasserie.com
December 11, 200816 yr The Cleveland Grill is closing after New Year's Eve. This is an expensive restaurant with good food, but the prices were probably out of line for the neighborhood. They are on West 117th Street just south of Lorain Ave. Some good news though -- the owner plans to opens a Greek seafood restaurant in a larger space elsewhere in Cleveland. More details will be available in next week's restaurant column by Jarrod Zickefoose in Sun Newspapers. December 11, 200816 yr I figured this was on the way for Cleveland Grille. I came across a craigslist posting at least a month ago offering the business for sale.
December 11, 200816 yr I went to Mexico Lindo in Old Brooklyn last night. It's a new Mex restaurant that opened in the old Theo's space next to the CVS and across from Deaconess Hospital on Pearl Road and Memphis Avenue. The owners, who indeed are Mexican, said that they've been open since last Friday. From memory, the menu is comprised of tacos, burritos, enchaladas, fajitas, gorditas, etc. There are various combos whereby you can get pretty much any combination of the aforementioned things (i.e. three soft tacos, two tacos and a burrito), with rice, and beans for about $7 or $8. They have a full bar, and yes, they do have margaritas.
December 11, 200816 yr no joke?! I can't believe i didn't even notice...does the sign still say "Theos"? I was just talking with my fiance how we wished a mexican place would open up in the neighborhood...going to have to try it out this weekend. Thanks for the heads up.
December 11, 200816 yr ^ It's for real! There is one Theo's Old Brooklyn Bar and Grille sign still up, and it's that white vinyl sign with the roses on it that's like twenty feet above the entryway. I didn't notice if there were others. That gold sign is gone: EDIT: Another photo, but it's easily a few years old. I told the owner "thank you" for not opening another pizza place in the neighborhood. Too many as it is already!
December 11, 200816 yr Someone please post if you go there. I get over that way about once a month when I go to the Sausage Shoppe and will stop and give them a try for lunch if they're a) good and b) open for lunch on Saturdays.
December 11, 200816 yr ^ Jar3232 and I and two friends ate there last night. I enjoyed it and thought it was good. I have a menu sitting on my kitchen counter that might have the hours on it. I will check it out and post later.
December 11, 200816 yr I'll report back after I try it. As far as pizza places go, i say bring more on...especially ones that you can dine it at (not many of those in the 'hood).

If they had found a more appropriate location for their good product, I think they would have made it. Appropriate would have been closer in the city or sadly, further out burbs.
December 12, 200816 yr I ate at Cleveland Grill once and really liked the food. Their prices kept me from repeat visits. And when I ate there with my sister, we were the only people there. Seemed like the whole staff was Albanian, which isn't a surprise considering the neighborhood. Next door is the Sahara Market, with Holyland Imports across the street. They are terrific Arabic grocers -- again not a surprise for the neighborhood. I do love the area's multiculturalism!
