March 18, 200916 yr According to Dante himself at my last block club meeting, Dante (the restaurant) was opening in May or June at the latest. Grumpy's is always a good backup to Lucky's.
March 18, 200916 yr I've been to Grumpy's twice and just didn't care much for it. I will definitely check out Latitude!
March 18, 200916 yr ^^^ I can't speak to whether or not Krazy Mac's is moving to Lakewood, but the Detroit-Shoreway location closing is permanent and I spoke to someone yesterday that is planning an initial leap into the restaurant business by opening an Argentinian restaurant in the former Snickers--->Cheddar's---->Krazy Mac's location. I believe it will be called "Il Bacio" and I also believe the building itself has already been purchased. Also, a new Cleats restaurant opened in Parma Hts. between Scorekeepers and Knockouts. Very clean and "upscale" in regards to a wing joint with lots of TVs for your viewing pleasure.
March 18, 200916 yr I hope they did their homework with the name so it isnt a repeat of the name ordeal of the previous snicker's...cheddars... krazy macs. There is an Il Bacio in Little Italy (Italian) as well as in most cities including DC. So there must not be a trademark on the name. They are usually pizza or Italian small plates places.
March 18, 200916 yr I think the big problem with cheddar's is that it's a national chain so they got a cease and desist letter from the corporate lawyer. Il Bacio isn't a national chain AFAIK.
March 18, 200916 yr I'd eaten breakfast at latitude several times before and always found it to be pretty good. But a couple weeks ago I went with my wife and a friend from out of town and we all declared it may have been the most delicious breakfast we had ever had. We're actually afraid to go back because it may spoil the memory. Delicious. I don't know what magic dust they are mixing in the food over there, but it's working.
March 19, 200916 yr Was wondering what happened to you Oompa Loompa (sounds like you met someone and have been busy with that). I will be in this weekend and will be checking many places out. I mentioned in another thread about the new show at Pickwick and was wondering if you were performing in it? Yeah, the old ball and chain occupies a lot of time... ;) No, I am not in any of the current shows at Pickwick, although I go back occasionally for holidays to fill in. I don't recognize your screenname, is this the ex X?
March 20, 200916 yr Ex X? I am X in perpetuity. X=infinity. Yada, yada. Nice to here from you again, though. Don't be a stranger to us!
March 20, 200916 yr Me... Im no ex X, and you dont know me but I just remember people once I connect things with them. A while back when I was back in Cleveland for a visit and after seeing the Midnight Martini Show, I had found out you were one of the performers and kept tabs on here (I actually have a promo poster somewhere with you on it), but then you disappeared, and since the ending of the MMShow I wasnt sure what happended to you. Now I know.

Now I know. I had to read that four times, I thought that said porno poster. Then I got my glasses. I'm so glad that says promo. X, seems like a nice boy that wouldn't do anything like that. I think I need to change the size of the text on my browser.
March 20, 200916 yr Pretty soon you'll be buying one of those telephones with extra large buttons. You mean the big button phone I currently have isn't sufficient? :wtf:
March 23, 200916 yr In a bow to tough times, recently reopened Cleveland restaurant offers breakfast for a penny By Associated Press 5:53 AM EDT, March 23, 2009 CLEVELAND (AP) — Owners of a Cleveland restaurant say tough times are one reason they're offering a one-cent breakfast special this week. With the purchase of a drink at the regular price, customers at the Big Egg can get two eggs, hash browns, and toast for just a penny. Co-owner Jimmy Lababidi says the cheap meal should help people who have lost their jobs through layoffs. http://www.fox8.com/news/sns-ap-oh--one-centbreakfast,0,1137207.story
March 23, 200916 yr oh lord, imagine the lines there! Hopefully the food is better than it used to be, but for a penny, who cares.
March 23, 200916 yr And don't forget to tip! Even if the breakfast is a penny you should be throwing down a fiver for the server. The guest saved at least that much anyway, and I hate cheap people with no social graces. Not saying that anyone on this forum has anything but the best manners. Just a friendly reminder from your local West Hollywood server:)
March 25, 200916 yr Me... Now I know. I didn't even know we had a poster...maybe you mean the cards they put out on the tables? Sorry X for thinking this was you! I've been away too long... The Martini Show goes on, they are doing a longer dinner show version on Saturday nights now, they also do the murder mysteries and some magic shows. I finally got a regular job, I work at the Ohio Center for Broadcasting doing a variety of office management type stuff. I still sing a little here and there, but mostly I'm enjoying having my weekends free for the first time in years.
March 25, 200916 yr OK so it's not a restaurant closing, but definitely affects many local restauranteurs and businesses, so I guess this is the best thread for this article> Food distributor A. LoPresti & Sons closes doors after 100 years Posted by Shaheen Samavati/Plain Dealer Reporter March 24, 2009 10:43AM Produce has always been the specialty of A. LoPresti & Sons, which shut down this week. The company got its start when Augustino LoPresti began selling apples and oranges from the back of a pushcart in 1908. Updated at 6:48 p.m. A. LoPresti & Sons, a century-old food distributor in Cleveland, said economic conditions have forced the company to close its doors, putting 72 people out of work. The company made the abrupt announcement Monday, shocking clients whom it has been doing business with for decades... March 25, 200916 yr ^Considering how many restauranteurs on cleveland.com are lamenting this, I'd agree this is the best thread to post this. Sad news indeed :-( clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
March 25, 200916 yr Anyone know if they were supplying Rego's Markets? I was just thinking about the comment that they were unable to collect some major receivables, and wondered if there was a "paisan" connection.
March 25, 200916 yr Not a restaurant - but a bit of food promotion: The church I am pretty active in has fish fries every friday during Lent. This friday morning, Channel 5 will announce our church as having the best fish fries in North East Ohio! St. Procop Catholic Church 3181 W. 41st St. Cleveland, OH 44109 Adult dinners are $12 but you get the most food around - 2 pieces of baked or fried fish, pierogies, grilled onions, cabbage and noodles, french fries, apple sauce, dinner rolls, cake, coffee and punch...you can also opt for a a full peirogi dinner. Seniors are $10 and I think children are $5 (but that number may not be right). Just tried that fish fry -- it is great! I am sorry that the church is closing.

We're actually afraid to go back because it may spoil the memory. Delicious. I don't know what magic dust they are mixing in the food over there, but it's working. Latitude is great. We eat there a few times a month for breakfast. Looking forward to whatever opening in the old Krazy Mac's. Not to speak evil of the dead but...., it seemed we always had a problem at Krazy Mac's. Spoiled iced tea, slow service, screwed up orders, and my favorite when a special request was answered with a snide remark from the manager/owner. The VERY BEST thing they had were the desserts. Home made cakes & pies made by a family friend. If anyone knows who this friend is he/she should open up their own bakeshop. I'm sure investors would not be hard to find!
March 25, 200916 yr I heard the cupcake place in Hudson is the best in the whole area. I'm not a cupcake fan so I can't tell you, but I've seen the cupcakes and they're pretty awesome. Can't remember the name though, maybe someone else knows? I like the ones from the shop in the West Side Market -- I think it is called Grandma Freda's? Less expensive and in my opinion, better. Especially the Red Velvet! Main Street Cupcakes They're very good - wide selection of unique flavors, though only a subset on any given day. But I've had both and I prefer A Cookie and a Cupcake.

March 25, 200916 yr 5 Guys Burgers is open in Mayfield. Those of you on the west side already had one but any eastsiders interested in a old fashioned cheeseburger and some fresh cut fries with malt vinegar can get your fix here. (I believe that is a run-on sentence.)
March 28, 200916 yr we went to the Big Egg today and I was very pleased. The service was freakishly good. Plenty of coffee and pleasant attitude. The place was very clean too. I just had an omelet, and it was quite good. They have dinner/homestyle items to for lunch and dinner and a little middle eatern section with grape leaves , hummus and fattoush (sp) This will definitely need to be in my flight path. Business looked pretty good too, although it was prime time sat AM so it could have been busier. It also looked like Ohio City Cafe, has reopened...Will try and confirm

April 1, 200916 yr Mods, this article doesn't fit strictly within this thread topic, but I couldn't find a general Cleveland restaurant news thread...and not sure if we really need to have a separate thread for non-opening/closing news. Anyhoo, via Cleveland.com, here is a very recent [narrow] write-up of the Cleveland wine scene from a Food & Wine columnist: http://www.foodandwine.com/articles/a-wine-snobs-favorite-new-city-scene
April 1, 200916 yr Oh, he knows - every labelwhore in Ohio knows about that place  clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
April 1, 200916 yr Oh, he knows - every labelwhore in Ohio knows about that place  I dunno about that! There was a conversation about the running club Hermes Sports on here recently and he said he almost had a heartattack thinking there was an Hermes store in Cleveland until he realized it was about sports.
April 1, 200916 yr http://www.nipissingu.ca/department/history/MUHLBERGER/2009/03/chinas-view-of-world.htm The Hermes talk just reminded me of that for some reason.
April 1, 200916 yr Typical NYer thinking their sh!t doesn't stink. I could do without people like that. And especially the people showing them around Cleveland. Hudson?, and bragging about lifestyle center(s)? They should be ashamed of themselves.
April 1, 200916 yr ^Along those lines...I was more annoyed about the hosts than I was about the writer.
April 1, 200916 yr I agree, it sounded like several people were pointing out to the author things about being a NYer that are negative and how "we're not like that," which would make anyone from NY feel a little defensive, understandably.
April 1, 200916 yr That writer could have gotten the same experience going to any other metro area's outskirts looking for good wine. Way to showcase the "city" as an agglomeration of strip malls and gas stations. This was basically a poorly done version of Anthony Bourdain's Cleveland episode, which I liked. If the NY writer wanted generic stores and gas stations, he/she could have crossed the Hudson into New Jersey. I guess that's what happens when we get dopey suburbanites representing our city...
April 1, 200916 yr Maybe Cleveland just doesn't have as good of a wine selection as NYC does. Maybe, but she wouldn't know. She sure didn't hit any of the urban wine bars.
April 2, 200916 yr Oh, he knows - every labelwhore in Ohio knows about that place  I dunno about that! There was a conversation about the running club Hermes Sports on here recently and he said he almost had a heartattack thinking there was an Hermes store in Cleveland until he realized it was about sports. Oh sweetie, MayDay is right. We've taken field trips out there!
April 2, 200916 yr God, I just read that article and it summed up everything I hate about wine aficionados. I was also really annoyed by the wife, whose behavior I blame on trying to "fit" into this pretentious class of people (I know they are all not like that).

I was also really annoyed by the wife, whose behavior I blame on trying to "fit" into this pretentious class of people (I know they are all not like that). I know exactly what you mean, but remember that these are individuals. I, as well, am extremely annoyed by people that act like the wife in this story, but this surely doesn't apply to all wine aficionados, or all rich people. Additionally, some people that act this way are just pretending to be wine aficionados.
April 2, 200916 yr Also, some people who are writers take some serious liberties with the "characters" in their stories. Like as not, this "character" was as much based on the commonly held notion (in NYC) that small town yokels like us should cringe and toady before the superior taste and intellect of a New Yorker as on the actual behavior of the wife.
April 7, 200916 yr Not quite sure where to put this, so I guess "Cleveland Restaurants" works. Looks like Steve Schimoler is pushing for more live music competition at the restuarants in and around downtown: http://steveschimoler.wordpress.com/2009/04/07/cleveland-food-really-rocks/ Cleveland Food really rocks April 7, 2009 by schimoler Many of you have heard my angle of the correlation between food and music, and all it took to come up with the idea for Clevelandfoodrocks.com, was after a late night of jamming with Cream of the Crop and standing around with a bunch of fellow chefs all proclaiming that Cleveland rocks! A few key strokes later, I owned the domain names for Cleveland food, chefs and restaurants rock. So what next? start a free website that promotes our city and the robust food and music scene. A few calls to get a team together and we had ADCOM/OPTIEM agree to build the website, The Scene, WKYC, Cool Cleveland, Great Lakes Publishing and the Rock Hall all on board to sponsor at no cost!! Get a bunch of restaurants to pony up and have live music and some cool food and drink ideas and start the promo during the Rock Inductions week and the plan was on a ROLL. We ended up with a KILLER website (Kudos to ADCOM!!!!), 18 restaurants who all featured some great live music and everyone created fun rock inspired goodies for the menu. We got great TV, Radio and print coverage all highlighting Cleveland’s roll up the sleeves attitude. So now we need to keep the fires burning! Over the next 2 week we will be designing an ongoing promo schedule and make sure all Cleveland restaurants know that they can join in on the website activity as well as start getting their own house bands together for the future Battle of the Restaurant Bands contest this summer. In this challenging economy, we need to add value to the guest who frequent and support our establishments. Discounts don’t work! We need to raise the bar for the customer to insure that they can find not only great food and service in Cleveland but also a commitment to enhancing the total experience. Thanks to everyone who made this happen! Steve

Like as not, this "character" was as much based on the commonly held notion (in NYC) that small town yokels like us should cringe and toady before the superior taste and intellect of a New Yorker as on the actual behavior of the wife. Then again, these folks took a serious wine writer to an Ohio winery. They really may be yokels. On a happier note, per Scene, Greenhouse Tavern to open on April 13! And some good new content at http://thegreenhousetavern.com/blog/
