January 11, 200718 yr ^ oh, the BH deli's still open. Super. I know the Uptown Grille across Euclid in the nicely rehabbed Univ East Plaza (?) began sucking BH patrons away, although the Grille -- which is nice -- doesn't have the character BH did in its heyday. There was nothing like going to hear Chink Stevenson and his jazz band jam in a crowded BH on a Saturday night with, I believe, Lamar Gaines and his band on Fridays.
January 11, 200718 yr Unfortunately, it's a helluva lot easier to plug in franchises than it is to spur kitchy, indie shops and venues. So, the powers that be really screwed up. We'll just have to count on the resilience of the developers, residents, students, and entrepreneurs to bring some of that energy back! It's those chains that have the credit-worthiness that construction lenders require (grr). Which is why chains fill the ground floor of pretty much all new stuff in every city. Best case scenario: new development opens, the retail portion (chains) fails badly, rents go down, and hello local stuff! Of course that hasn't exactly worked yet at Shaker Square...
January 11, 200718 yr I give it at least one thumb down for the "e" at the end of "grill". Seriously, who wants to eat car?
January 15, 200718 yr Hi, there is a new restaurant opened at 11100 Clifton Blvd. Sean's Place is a full service restaurant that offers casual dining. It is in the same block as Truffles and Castle Ice Cream. It used be known as Metro Joe's which was a coffee shop. The previous owner died back in October, he was my brother Sean Donovan. My parents have re-opened a new restaurant and we would really enjoy seeing all of the old Metro Joe regulars and Sean's friends. Thanks and hope to see you there, Mary
January 16, 200718 yr wow, thanks for posting Mary (Spring)! Best of luck to you! Switching gears, Qdoba Mexican Grill (no E, just for you Strap!) will open at Euclid & Mayfield hopefully by the end of January. They're a nationwide chain and this will be their first Cleveland proper location.
January 16, 200718 yr Actually Qdoba has alread opened its doors - and yesterday had a line of Case students out the door and all the way to Euclid Avenue. (Granted they were giving away free food from 6-8pm but still cool) It should be interesting to see how the students here migrate considering the HUGE devotion to Chipotle up on Coventry right now. I hope to try it out today or tomorrow. MGD, if you moved here you might know that
January 16, 200718 yr Hmmm... I get the feeling I know you, JeffreyT! Thanks for the update! And welcome to the forum...what took you so long?
January 16, 200718 yr Oh I've been here for almost two years now, I just have never posted, but I thought it was about time to get into the swing of things. And another restaurant development - at the corner of Cornell & Murray Hill in Little Italy (across the street from the Baricelli Inn) a new owner has taken over that empty spot and there are signs up and appears to be work going on inside....hopefully I'll stop by today on my way to work and get some information.
January 16, 200718 yr The old Tutto Giorno space? I really like that location for a restaurant. The patio on Murray Hill was especially nice. I wonder how long it'll take the City to replace the Cornell Road Bridge. I guess I'm surprised that a new owner has popped up now that this key access point has been severed!
January 17, 200718 yr From Cleveland.com: New York Spaghetti House to close, reopen The landmark New York Spaghetti House in downtown Cleveland will close on Jan. 21, with plans to re-emerge, remodeled and renamed, the restaurant's owner said Tuesday. The restaurant will reopen in spring as the Sport and Ale House, a sports-themed, casual dining spot, with a new 5,000-square-foot deck, said owner Jon Levoy, president of Dionysus Enterprises LLC. More at cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com
January 17, 200718 yr How many sports bars do we need downtown? But I guess that's what might work for that spot until the county offices take the Ameritrust tower (one way or another) and bring more customers closer to the restaurant. January 17, 200718 yr They've actually been renovating for a while. I didn't know they were changing concept, though. I was happier with it being an Italian joint, but I like the idea of a patio. I assume this is going to go over the little parking lot next door.
January 18, 200718 yr Wahoo! The Watermark is coming back this spring! http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/plaindealer/restaurantrow/index.ssf?/base/entertainment/116894078139640.xml&coll=2

January 18, 200718 yr 1996 Cleveland's Bicentenial Celebration The Watermark Dock. One of the best seats in the house.
January 21, 200718 yr Awesome news. I loved the Watermark; a definite asset to Cleveland. The jazz piano twist should make the new one even better.
January 21, 200718 yr ... I hope Watermark can breathe life back into lower Flats East Bank which, with apartments/condos, the grassy Settlers Landing park, is the most viable portion of E. Bank surviving... One thing, though, is a decision needs to be made on Odeon (if anybody knows anything ...). I say tear down; it's a big ugly eyesore warehouse that faces the handsome Watermark and blocks development. A tall, slender luxury condo high-rise with street restaurant/retail would be awesome for this tight corner.
January 22, 200718 yr Cool idea. I'd also suggest a youth hostel, or a European-style hotel as options. No renting of rooms by the hour, or by the month, however. :-D "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
January 22, 200718 yr Looks like the guy who owns Snickers is opening a small restaurant next door that will be called Cheddars. It will be a mac and cheese only restaurant! 20 different kinds of mac and cheese! http://www.freetimes.com/story/4660

January 22, 200718 yr oh man! between these two restaurants, I'm going to have to double my time at the gym! Fantastic!
January 23, 200718 yr that little area is shaping up nicely. I believe that the owner of the Treehouse is opening a space right around there very soon.
January 23, 200718 yr Snickers has the BEST mac and cheese (and this is coming from a kid that eats a LOT of mac and cheese). I think I'm going to have to rent a table in perpetuity.
January 24, 200718 yr Moulton Brewing Company is soon to open in Cleveland's Midtown neighborhood. This is a great local success story. You can listen to an interview with their Production Manager at http://www.meetthebloggers.net Per the website, the most intriguing aspect of their beer is it's health effects. You may actually feel better (or just as good) after quaffing a few. http://www.moultonbrewing.com BEER = GOOD FOR YOU!! http://www.thefoodpaper.com/features/health/beer.html Initially this will only be a production facility, but who knows? Maybe they will eventually open a small taproom in Midtown. Yum! A beer a day keeps the doctor at bay.
January 26, 200718 yr According to the cleveland.com Lifestyles blog, the former Parker's spot will reopen as Light Bistro in the spring. The former executive chef at The Leopard bought it. Sounds like they'll be doing the tapas thing. Glad that it isn't going to sit empty long!
January 27, 200718 yr According to the cleveland.com Lifestyles blog, the former Parker's spot will reopen as Light Bistro in the spring. The former executive chef at The Leopard bought it. Sounds like they'll be doing the tapas thing. Glad that it isn't going to sit empty long! Great news. Obviously some smart (business) cookie realized she/he had: a) an historic building, b) in an historic hood that happens to be one of Cleveland's hottest. I'm not surprised Parker's spot flipped so quickly.
January 28, 200718 yr Question: What's the Leopard? I hope it's open by the end of May, 'cause we have a bunch of guests staying at the B&Bs on Bridge & W. 28th around that time!
January 28, 200718 yr Its an upscale restaurant at the Bertram Inn in Aurora. I don't really know much about it. http://www.theleopardrestaurant.com/

It will be a mac and cheese only restaurant! 20 different kinds of mac and cheese! http://www.freetimes.com/story/4660 A sign in the window says Cheddars will open Feb. 5. I'm a little skeptical that this space can seat 35, though... More like 10 if you ask me! BTW, anyone been to the new version of Grumpy's in Tremont?

Sounds like they'll be doing the tapas thing. Glad that it isn't going to sit empty long! Here is a post from the cleveland.com forums about Light Bistro. It appears to be from the owner: "Just to clarify a bit about the menu, we will feature progressive American "tapas" ,small appetizer sized plates, and some larger portions that could be eaten by one as an entree or shared. We will also feature 2 tasting menus one that will be up to the diner to choose from the menu. The other will be made made up of products we find at the market that day. The "market menu" will feature the avant-garde style dishes the Leopard tasting menu has become known for. We also have a very exciting drink program in the works featuring hibiscus iced tea ,homemade ginger ale, and a wine list full of outstanding small boutique wines and organic wines."
January 28, 200718 yr I am hoping that the new place in Parkers space will be a little more wallet friendly than the leopard place (just looked at website) I am eager to get to the new Grumpy's but can't seem to spend my rationed (2x month) brunch calories anywhere but Lucky's. Has anyone mentioned that Gypsy Beans has finally opened on Detroit/65? has anyone been? I recall the owner was a barista at Talkies and a very nice person. It is probably wrong to mention here that Lolita's happy hour is amazing...but I mourn the loss of the original menu.
January 28, 200718 yr ^Gypsy's opening was discussed in the Gordon Square thread. I'm a big fan -- had a cup of joe there today, and actually yesterday too for that matter. The food is good as well. ^I totally agree re: Lolita's happy hour and changed menu.
January 28, 200718 yr How has the menu changed? Did it change from the small plates concept back to the mac and cheese type stuff (I think I read this was going to happen)
January 29, 200718 yr re: Lolita- the exquisite small plates (ie sashimi in stuffed grape leaf) that made me weak in knees are gone. Thankfuly the house cured meats remain. The menu is still nice, and the food was great. I had a Kobe cheese burger (with a fried egg and bacon, no less) and oysters on the half shell. The happy hour prices and quality make this the best steal in town. Mac and cheese is there as are a lot of heavy entrees. I think I may need to hit Parea in NYC b/c I believe that is where all the tasty small plates went! I am still a huge Lolita fan, but I could kick myself for not going more when the menu was what I thought was near paradise.
January 29, 200718 yr I was wondering. I read an article where Michael was saying that Cleveland wasnt taking to the small plate concept well and that he would be reverting back to some of the old Lola favorites that people have missed.
January 29, 200718 yr I was wondering. I read an article where Michael was saying that Cleveland wasnt taking to the small plate concept well and that he would be reverting back to some of the old Lola favorites that people have missed. I don't know why? I'm with Wim love Tapas!
January 31, 200718 yr BTW, anyone been to the new version of Grumpy's in Tremont? Loves it. The service was appropriately grumpy but in a friendly, almost tongue-in-cheek manner. The inside is a little unfinished (as is the outside), but the decor is pretty nice. Not a big fan of tomato soups, but their tomato bisque is one of the best things I've ever eaten. And to top it all off, it appears that they'll be open until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings ... it will be soooo nice to stumble across the parking lot from Lava Lounge and get some late-night jambalaya.
February 1, 200718 yr I've been to Grumpy's twice for brunch with my boyfriend, and we were mostly pleased. The food is decent, although my boyfriend ordered an omelette which was a bit lackluster (small, flat, and took up maybe 1/4th of the plate). But everything else we've had has been pretty good. One word of caution during the cold months - don't sit by the door, and if you go - don't hold the door open! :whip: clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
February 6, 200718 yr Really enjoyed Cheddars, although even I, the Mac & Cheese king, was a little shocked to see 15 different types of M & C in one place. They also had a small selection of burgers. Totally cute place, undeniably gay-friendly. It was all still a little rough around the edges, but I think that'll improve after they get settled in. And for those of you who worried about seating ... they managed to cram 28 seats in that lil' place. As a side note, the Detroit/W. 50s through 60s really seems to be popping lately. I've never seen it completely dead in the last 5 years, but the daytime pedestrian traffic really seems to be stepped up lately (particularly given the FRIGID weather).
February 6, 200718 yr ^Did you happen to see if they have a website or at least an online menu? clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
February 6, 200718 yr No. Another downside. No online menu yet - not even a separate telephone # ... I was told to call Snickers for carry-out orders. I don't remember the full menu, but a couple of items included Crazy Mac (Snickers' traditional m & c, with optional mandarin chicken add-in), Alpine Mac (Gruyere, bacon and chives), Irish Mac (corned beef, swiss cheese, in a swiss cheese sauce), some kind of Lobster Mac and South Beach Mac (I don't remember everything in it, but I know it included low-fat Feta). Everything ranged between $9 and $16 (with the lobster mac at the high end) and included a breadstick and a modest salad.
February 6, 200718 yr Oh wow it sounds so good. Getting near lunchtime...mmmm.... This could become my indulgence getaway now that the Town Fryer is no longer
