I am disappointed to see Maria's Roman Room on Detroit Avenue at the east end of Lakewood has closed. Now I'm down to just one Italian restaurant in my neighborhood -- Peppers Cafe on Detroit at Cove.

That's only a part of it. There are an awful lot of vacancies along Detroit at the east end of Lakewood.

Two late-night spots coming to downtown... first up and most notable, it seems DPDough is moving into 230 Euclid Avenue where Jimmy John's used to be. According to the door they will be open until 4AM

Looks like the new owners ran this place into the ground. What a shame. Maria's has been in Lakewood for 50 years.....

Etheostoma Caeruleum, if you have something super important that you want to share, you should not agonize other forumers by attempting to exclude them from discussion on a public forum, and you should learn when to pipe down. That said, the posts post-Etheostoma were removed whether or not they were legit to get this thread back on topic. Take it to PM if you really want to exclude certain people, but don't derail them on here. Back on topic, folks. Thanks.

Its not a real restaurant, nor is it really real food, but for what its worth the McDonalds at the Galleria is closed. Apparently they closed about 2 weeks ago. If McDonalds closed it makes me wonder how all the other places are doing as well. Especially since after 5ish its pretty much dead in there.

The eateries in the Galleria live and die on the lunch crowd.  It is fairly busy in there around lunch.  I went to a seminar in the Galleria last year and McDonald's was the only place that really didn't have much of a line.... so I guess that answers your question.

Cleveland's Iron Chef Michael Symon unveils two new restaurants at The Q

By John Petkovic

October 19, 2009, 12:59PM

The superstars won't all be on the court this season at The Q. Chef Michael Symon, who already has a title under his belt, is the latest addition to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Tuesday, the Iron Chef champion unveiled two restaurants at The Q that will be open before and during events at the arena.

MORE AT CLEVELAND.COM: http://www.cleveland.com/goingout/index.ssf/2009/10/clevelands_iron_chef_michael_s.html

I will not announce this here anymore.

Well at least it was a much better approach!  We might try it on one of our frequent visits to Cleveland, but certainly not enough to make them successful.  It would be hard for me to choose them over Slymans!  Good luck tho.

sounds good.

The more options downtown (or near downtown) , the better.

Once again... It would really be greatly appreciated that if you like the idea...to send a note of encouragement to the management.

Thanks!

Great!

please tell us about happy hour  :-)

Eric Williams, chef/owner at Momocho, is a fairly happy guy. And why wouldn’t he be? He’s got the most amazing modern Mexican restaurant in town (and my personal favorite of anywhere) and  is about to really experience just what it means to be busy once Guy’s show, Diners Drive-Ins and Dives, airs exposing Momocho to new customers. Oh yeah, and as of last night he signed the papers to finalize the purchase of Happy Dog on West 58 and Detroit, making him the newest tenant in Gordan Square District. And he couldn’t be more excited to be........

Nothin wrong with that!

Restaurant Week is Nov. 1-14.  For those that are not familiar, traditionally participating restaurants will offer a full meal for $25-30.  Here are the participating restaurants:

http://clevelandindependents.com/wp/restaurants/

Chili Peppers is opening a location in the euclid arcade, across from where Charley's currently is. If it is the same people, they have a shop on E. 185th and is very good. Pretty much the same food as a Chipotle.

Fyi, that's the Arcade or "Old Arcade". The Euclid Arcade is part of the Colonial Marketplace complex. Whatever the case, good news since the Arcade's lost quite a few tenants.

I didnt know if everyone would know which arcade it was if i just put Arcade.

Wrong thread, but there also was a joke/gag/party shop that looks like it just opened up as well.

FYI, they are on the verge of signing I believe 4 new food court tennants at the Arcade in addition to the Chilli Peppers.  Though I didn't ask specifically what they were.

Yummy!

Anyone know if Dante is open in Tremont?  The web site has hours posted, but no menu, and I haven't heard any buzz about it on this site.

Also, Dante's website (http://www.danteboccuzzi.com/) mentions "Ginko Japanese Restaurant", which makes sense given his time working in a Nobu.  Anyone have any info on this?  Location even?

I emailed him before my visit in early October to see if the restaurant would be open while I was there and Dante sent me a message saying it would be open sometime early November.

Really like the Greenhouse Tavern concept, but I'm 2 for 2 on bad experiences there.  Tonight was pretty bad.  Jonathon brought us some complementary food because he felt bad but i dont know what is up with the service there?

Thanks!  I'm in your boat- am visiting Cleveland in a couple weeks and am scouting out places to eat.  Looks like I need to keep scouting.

Has anyone posted about Indian Flame, the new Indian restaurant in University Circle? It's at Euclid and E. 117th, next door to the Euclid Tavern. I went two weeks ago for dinner. The food was excellent, though the service was somewhat slow. The naan was especially mouth-watering. They also do a lunch buffet.

I was pleased to see a steady stream of eat-in and take-out customers despite the lack of publicity. I think it's a perfect fit for the neighborhood, with a casual cafe atmosphere that would make any CWRU student feel right at home.

Was there anything spicy on the menu?

Yes. You can order all main dishes either mild, medium or hot.

I'll have to check it out and see how "hot", their "hot" is.

StrapHanger.... I would email Dante because he will respond and perhaps they will be open by the time you arrive in the Cleve. If not don't worry because there are so many great places to eat that the problem will be deciding where to go. A few places I dined that were all terrific were: L'Albatros (University Circle), Luxe (Detroit Shoreway), Lucky's Cafe (Tremont), Momocho (Ohio City), Great Lakes Brewing (Ohio City) and if you want something different and ethnic with music we tried Sterele's Slovenian Country House which was surprisingly good and fun although it's in the hood. There are so many more places to eat. Cleveland has become a great foodie town without a doubt.

Don't forget table 45!  You'll help pay a UrbanOhioan's salary by dining there!

Also, good eat on Shaker Square/Larchmere.

I've only had one or two small plates. It's too dark for my taste.

Thanks, sf, I will email Dante and report back if they have an opening date in mind.  (thanks for the other suggestions too!)

I checked out the Happy Dog a couple nights ago and it was pretty tasty.  These are 1/4 lb dogs, so they are pretty filling.  They do have a "vegetarian sausage" available, but I did not ask if it was vegan safe.  As for what I ordered, I got one with a fried egg, chorizo chili, nacho cheese, and habanero pickled red onions.  We also got the tater tots with a few sauces.  Since they don't have a functioning website, I scanned a copy of the menu for your viewing pleasure.

That sounds pretty good.  I bet they will do well as a late night spot.

I think they are currently using the Tofurkey veg sausage, but are looking to find a local chef to concoct a veg dog.

IMO, the dogs are big enough to share and if you are still hungry, you can order another with different dressings...

I see Kim chee, habanerus, piquillo & coconut peppers.

I wonder how hot the "devil's hot sauce" is??

Sounds like they may be up to my standards.

Awesome posting the menu!  Hopefully they come up with some interesting combinations to recommend.

How has the interior changed?

I can't comment on the interior since I had never been there before, but I am sad to say the old exterior sign has been replaced by a rather bland looking one that says "Happy Dog".

I was disappointed to see the old sign go as well.  MTS, you seem to have a "how hot is hot" thing going on here!

You know I like spicy foods!  If my eyes aren't watering, there is not sweat on my brow or my nose isn't running - it aint hot!

I want it so hot I can't eat it, like Bushido in Charleston.

the lay out and feel of theinterior has not really changed.  they added another bathroom for women, updated the light fixtures, updated the booths and some of the bar stools, added another pinball machine and added a dart board.

the old sign with the painted image of the dog was owned by the previous owner of the happy dog.

Now that's an interesting idea!  Kind of a Zen thing- the best meal is one you cannot eat, only contemplate- perhaps Bushido is an apt name for that restaurant.

Their food is ridiculously hot.  I took their 10 piece spice challenge.  I made to 6¾ thru the challenge before quitting.  The food is [glow=red,4,300]HOT[/glow].  My face was numb for a good time after my meal.  That food is not for light-weights!

I like hot food, but at the point you can't even eat it, it has to be more of a "my big cajones" thing than enjoying the food.

I wouldn't normally eat all my food with that much heat.  My grandfather (my moms father) is the only person, that I know, that eats everything with some sort of pepper in or on it.  I get it from him.

The sushi challenge or when I was in China were different.  I only took the challenge because I didn't think the food would be that hot.  I've rarely met food that I thought was "hot".  Boy was I wrong - but I still have big cojones!  :P  :P  :P

I still have big cojones! :P   :P   :P

You pervert!  I was talking about the plural of cajón! :P

I knew you'd catch that!  LOL

There will be a private party opening at RJ Boland's tomorrow night, and I believe they intend to open to the public within a week.  Place was bustling with activity when I walked by today, looked like lots of training.  Place looks pretty decent inside too...
