December 28, 200915 yr There is a new pizza shop opening in the former Domino's space at the corner of Superior and E. 6th. It doesnt say when they will open but there is a sign in the window. EDIT - Pizza shop will be Legendz Pizza.
December 28, 200915 yr thx but i'm not sure either. is that bank building where dante is going into? Yes
December 28, 200915 yr The Chocolate Bar at Euclid & E. 4th is open as of yesterday... Great news! It'll fit right into the area, with a nice transition into the Arcade. I had dessert and a martini there the Friday before Christmas. The martini was good (and pretty strong) and my chocolate strawberry crepe was pretty good. Not the best crepe I've had around Cleveland (Le Petit Triangle takes that award) but it was pretty good, albeit a little expensive ($8.99 I believe, but pretty big). The service was very good, but there also weren't very many people there.
December 28, 200915 yr ^ I would like to see more restaurant traffic downtown outside of 4th... there are some nice ones around too.
January 1, 201015 yr Here is info about Market Garden Brewery, which Sam McNulty is opening in the building next to the WSM. Can't believe he got the brewmaster from Dogfish Head! http://www.clevescene.com/cleveland/bites-relocating-ferris/Content?oid=1808797
January 1, 201015 yr ^ I would like to see more restaurant traffic downtown outside of 4th... there are some nice ones around too. I try not to respond, but there is activity in the warehouse district and tower city and other venue throughout downtown. As things are developed more will come as Cleveland is a foodie town.

Dogfish Head's "Raison D'Etre" is one of my favorites. Sounds like this could be a really cool new place.
January 1, 201015 yr This Guy McNulty is brilliant. Great to have someone who is a risk taker and is rethinking what Cleveland is all about and building on current assets like the WSM. I mean what a great idea to have a huge beer garden and brewery attached to the Market. I know he wasn't the first to this area but he is sure taking the lead. It seemed like for so long the WSM was this lone beacon in an otherwise barren area but not any longer. I can't wait for this place to open and to see what other great changes and ideas this local entrepreneur brings to Ohio City and Cleveland. I loved Bar Cento so I'm sure this place will be a huge success.

I loved Bar Cento so I'm sure this place will be a huge success. Really? It's great you're excited about this, I am too. But you make it sound like the WSM is the only thing in Ohio City and everyone in Cleveland is a backwards dolt! There is afterall already a brewery right across the street that not only produces award winning beers, but does so using cutting edge sustainability concepts-it's where the brewmaster for the place you're lauding got his start. And there are a number of other quality restaurants and lots of revitalization that have already occurred in this neighborhood. I don't see the need to compliment one entrepreneur by so being so blatantly ignorant of previous contributions to the neighborhood from other members of the community.
January 2, 201015 yr Can someone tell me if the Global Moderators are here to personally attack and try to censor other members on this site? X who the H do you think you are? I could give a rats behind how you took my post and obviously you have severe personal issues and shouldn't be monitoring anyting except your own behaviour. How you pulled that crazy message out of my post is anyone's guess but it's completely off base. I have every right to give props to McNulty who is taking a huge lead with investing, expanding, and revitalizing this area without having to mention all the other obvious contributors to the neighborhood. And for your information I have family history from OC that goes back to the 1800's so you know what you can do with your "ignorant" comment. And if you don't want people to think your an ignorant dolt then quit acting like one!
January 2, 201015 yr SFBOB is one of the best Cleveland advocates out of state we have... He has roots here and who knows, may decide to come back here and encourage others to do so as well. His original post did not mean anything of the sort that Ohio City had little to offer. He basically meant that it has come a long way and continues to do so. Anytime we get someone in San Fran where there can often be a 'west is best...east is least' attitude (my very own two sisters who live there!), who says good things about Cleveland, we need to keep the welcome mat out all the time for them. Enthusiasm can be difficult to generate about our city, especially on the coast, so let's not diffuse it. I think there was a simple misunderstanding here. C'mon guys... Shake on it! :-D
January 2, 201015 yr Everyone....let's dial it down a bit. I've already had a complaint and I will watch this exchange for a day or so.
January 2, 201015 yr thx but i'm not sure either. is that bank building where dante is going into? I think you got the answer you were looking for from EC's question, but the last tenant of the Dante space was in fact a bank- a Third Federal Savings & Loan. Not sure how long ago it closed, but no more than a couple years. I'm excited about Dante but still get sad when neighborhood services close to make room for nightlife- I think Tremont is down to one real bank now.
January 3, 201015 yr I don't know if this has been discussed in this thread but early this morning I see that Metropolitan Cafe in the WD has closed for renovations, etc. The paper is up on the windows and there are "coming soon" signs for The Metro Bar & Kitchen. I'm glad. That space needed an update and a refresher of its image. Didn't have the camera or else I would 've gotten a pic. Too much snow anyway... Now if only XO would liven itself up... Also, the window paper has come down from Chinato. Depending on how fast they work and get occupancy permits, etc. , it looks like it could open relatively soon. And the 3 huge "For Lease" signs have been taken down from the windows of the old Indigo's in the Colonial Arcade. I always thought the Sports Hall Of Fame Restaurant was going there. I know there is a specific thread for that but I couldn't gather if it's still going in that location or not. Anyway, something must be.
January 3, 201015 yr I've been thinking something should go into that Indigo spot for awhile. I guess a sports spot is better than nothing.
January 5, 201015 yr Metropolitan Cafe closes for a face-lift, new menu: Restaurant Row By Joe Crea, The Plain Dealer January 05, 2010, 3:18PM The Warehouse District's Metropolitan Cafe has closed for renovations. Almost exactly 10 years after opening in the home of the former Piccolo Mondo, the Warehouse District's Metropolitan Cafe has closed -- for renovations. Joe Saccone, co-owner of Hyde Park Restaurant Group, which owns the property, says that an estimated $500,000 will be invested in the complete remodeling of the space at 1352 West Sixth St. in Cleveland. January 5, 201015 yr I love everytime I hear about a new outdoor bar in downtown. The smoking ban is the gift that keeps on giving for C-town!

January 6, 201015 yr I was always lead to believe that Metropolitan was one of the better downtown dining options. It sounds as if they fired their former chef, are these changes due to lack of business?

I don't see the need to compliment one entrepreneur by so being so blatantly ignorant of previous contributions to the neighborhood from other members of the community. Sfbob is correct on this one. Sam (McNulty) was an intern at Ohio City Development before I was as well as being in urban planning school with me and I couldn’t help but be impressed with him then. He was a real go getter, thought outside the box and wasn’t afraid of anything, and is frankly brilliant. He will do transformational things. Many people have made contributions to this neighborhood, but since I have been gone, overall this neighborhood is pretty much the same as it was when I left (one step forward one step back kind of thing), and others that have been around longer than I, say it really has been in “transition” since the 80’s, and maybe before. Sam will be the one to change this. He will go beyond just being a business owner.
January 8, 201015 yr I think you missed my point. But why revive an argument that was dropped a week ago?
January 8, 201015 yr Because I know Sam, and you unfairly attacked Sfbob (and seemed to miss everyone elses point).
January 8, 201015 yr As someone who is not a friend of Mr. McNulty, I appreciate his contibutions to Ohio City. His friends on this board have taken legitimate observations as personal attacks. Lets just drop it.
January 8, 201015 yr I was merely reinforcing what Sfbob mentioned upthread. Maybe I just came across this posting today..? Sorry X, I didnt realize it was an argument or that I exceeded the time appropriate for adding what I thought was a nice contribution to the subject.
January 9, 201015 yr Thanks everyone. It's time to let it go. Now, on to the subject of this thread.... I had dinner last week at Zocalo Mexican Grill & Tequilería on East Fourth Street for the first time. I enjoyed the food very much, but the service was a bit slow. I had the Jalisco Steak which is served with rajas, vegetables, chipotle sauce and salsa verde (yes, I went to the website to look at the menu to share the details!). It's also served with tortillas but that was just too much and didn't eat them. It was very tasty, but there was something up with the Diet Coke which tasted more like cherry coke. I will go back again, though. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
January 10, 201015 yr ^ We ate there Friday night and it was really good as well. I had guac/chips and a quesadilla-- quite tasty. I think it may have just been a factor of being the weekend after the holidays and the bad weather, but E4th was DEAD. At 10:30 Saigon and La Strada were closed, there were only a few people in the other places, and we were the last folks in Zocalo at 11:30. On another note, I was in Tremont this afternoon and heard that Dante was having a private opening party this evening and the restaurant will be opening to the public this Monday. Finally we will be able to use the gift certificate my folks bought for us last Christmas-- we came home to find out it had switched back to Lockkeepers again. Though they would have honored it (as well as any of the other Cleveland Independents), we wanted to eat at Dante again!
January 10, 201015 yr BK was right, Dante is indeed open. http://www.newsnet5.com/video/22196184/index.html

January 12, 201015 yr Chinato's prelim. menu is up. I hope they will do lunch once they are open awhile: http://chinatocleveland.com/menu/ Chinato is now listed on OpenTable for reservations, but won't let you make a reservation except for Jan 26 or later.
January 12, 201015 yr Table 45 is adding sushi to their dinner menu! They have hired a full time chef who will do exclusively sushi. There is a lot being added to the menu, including four new appetizers, 13 different types of sashimi and nagiri, and 16 different types of sushi rolls. Come on down, the fun starts at 4 PM Wednesday. (That coincides with happy hour.)
January 12, 201015 yr More about Andy Tveekrem's role in the brewery-to-be next to the West Side Market - as if West 25th and Lorain wasn't already a great destination for great beer! :-) http://www.cleveland.com/taste/index.ssf/2010/01/noted_brewmaster_andy_tveekrem.html clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
January 12, 201015 yr It should help in furthering W.25th as a destination. With the market, it will have daytime and nighttime crowds.
January 12, 201015 yr ^ I think he is moving into the vacant "middle eastern foods building" next to the WSM and across from Bier Market.
January 12, 201015 yr Hudson's Main Street Cupcakes is opening a new store in Rocky River, on Detroit near Heinen's. It looks like it is pretty close to opening.
January 12, 201015 yr Please keep us advised as I always wanted to try them. Both my sisters live in Hudson and go nuts over them.
January 12, 201015 yr Noted brewmaster Andy Tveekrem returns to Cleveland to pour his energies into microbrewery By Michael Heaton, The Plain Dealer January 12, 2010, 2:00PM He's baaack. January 12, 201015 yr Chef Dante Boccuzzi back in his element with new restaurant By Joe Crea, The Plain Dealer January 12, 2010, 3:12PM At the stroke of midnight Dec. 31, 2008, Dante Boccuzzi became a chef without a restaurant. He concluded his agreement to operate the once, and future, Lockkeepers in Valley View with the aim of creating a more intimate operation that, he said, better reflected his personal style of dining. read more at: http://www.cleveland.com/taste/index.ssf/2010/01/chef_dante_boccuzzi_back_in_hi.html

January 13, 201015 yr Wow, that Chinato menu is enormous. Will be interesting to see how it evolves. Definitely lots of good looking stuff there.

January 14, 201015 yr Since Zack admittedly has never really cooked "Italian", I initially thought "how dare him open an italian restaurant", with all the true Italians out there. He is basically basing his food off a trip to Italy he made to decide what he liked. But he is creative and clever enough to make it work, just not sure that you could call it authentic.

January 14, 201015 yr I hate to give a bad review, but I was very underwhelmed by that new Michael Symon restaurant B-Spot in Woodmere. It's a lot smaller than I would have thought, and I'm not crazy about the interior being openly connected to the Eaton Plaza mall (whatever it's called). I just had fries and a burger - nothing crazy - and...I don't know, it just didn't taste that good, and I REALLY didn't care for the sauces, in particular this awful chili ketchup. Worst of all, our bartender even admitted they virtually false advertise $1 PBRs, and everything else is at least 5 bucks (even domestics), which is definitely way too pricey for a burger joint. $5 for a bud light - come on, this isn't that kind of place. Afterwards, I went to Paladar (or is it Paladan/Paladin...who knows) for drinks. Now THAT is a nice joint, and our bartender was cool enough to give the three of us a free beer (split three ways), some kind of ale that I've never had. I think they charge for ice there - for some reason my drink was a dollar more than what the menu said - but I didn't complain, and I enjoyed the atmosphere a lot. Cruzan Coconut on the rocks - that is going to be my drink there from now on!
January 14, 201015 yr TBideon. Thanks for that honest review. I havent been yet, but I believe what your saying. As much as I appreciate Simon, I think he automatically gets a pass and raves since he is a local hero and "bright" spot (if not somewhat over-rated). I MAY check it out next time (but wont automatically overpay for a beer because it a Simon restaurant) I will check out Paladar though.
January 14, 201015 yr Paladar is good South American food. Impressive fish selection IIRC. But Marbella right down the street (Mallorca's sister restaraunt) is usually the reason I head that way to eat, especially since Charlie's Crab closed down.
