July 6, 201014 yr From their Facebook page ... The Flaming Ice Cube in Cleveland is scheduled to open with limited hours Thursday and Friday, July 8 and 9 (11am - 6pm).
July 6, 201014 yr Quick review for Paladar in Woodmere. I don't know if they got a new, inexperienced chef or were just having one of those days, but the food was just terrible when I was there last week. The shrimp cerviche, tortilla soup and coffee were almost inedible, and I have very low standards. A huge disappointment. I've been there twice now. Fun atmosphere for getting together with a large party. Chips and guac were good. Food has been mediocre both times. I can't even remember what I ate. This one falls into the "I'll go if everyone else wants to, but I'm not suggesting it" category.
July 7, 201014 yr Finally tried Bar Symon today out in Avon Lake. We rarely get to try many new places anymore, and esp this far away, but it was our first time with a babysitter so we thought we'd give it a whirl. It REALLY is in the middle of nowhere. Avon Lake is still very underdeveloped; I'm only familiar with the area right off the 83 exit off 90 where costco is as that's where I used to go to costco before we got one in strongsville, and I assumed it would be right in/around there but it wasn't. It was a few miles away in an even more remote strip mall. They were surprisingly VERY light on patrons; not sure what was up with that as we overheard another server say to his table that they're usually on a long wait by this time (8pm on a saturday). We didn't have to wait at all for a table either inside or outside. The food started out fantastic, out of the park good and got progressively just kind of ok. We got the wings to start, you get a choice of citrus-cilantro or srciracha hot so we went with the citrus. They were VERY good, probably best wings I've ever had for non-traditionally sauced wings, and NOT sweet like I was afraid they would be. I could have eaten 5 baskets of them. We both got a burger, I got the Lola burger and mr. RNR got the Fat Doug. The burger was good, but was topped with an egg that was so "sunny" the whole thing was really runny. I like a runny yolk, but the white was pretty gelatinous and most of it dropped off the burger when I picked it up as it wasn't cooked/solid enough to stick together. But it was very tasty and I liked that you could get it on a bun or an english muffin; I got the muffin as I like less/thinner bread than a big bun. mr. RNR said the fat doug was good but something just didn't work, like too much cheese or pastrami or something. He's also not a big fan of the skinny, double-fried Lola fries but I like them. We ordered a side of the brussels sprouts with walnuts to split but they never came; the server quickly took them off the bill later on when she found out they never arrived. Not quite sure if we wanted dessert or not, we split a hot chocolate cake topped with a small scoop of vanilla and a hint of cherries. There were only 2 actual cherries and the sauce was very thin, and I didn't think the cake was particularly wow; I would rather have gotten the sprouts and skipped the dessert in retrospect but you never know unless you try. I got a beer flight which was well poured for $9 (3 big glasses) and very tasty. Service was very good and prompt, table cleared regularly, waters refilled, etc. I didn't care much for the clientele and we won't be moving to avon lake anytime soon, that's for sure. To our left was a big group of richie-riches, the men in salmon colored shorts, polos and loafers or in bermudas and hawaiian shirts and the women with a lot of jewels, makeup and hairspray. The people on our R had a big discussion with the server about how important they were as they used to live in Connecticut and how they really knew good food and boy, what they had was very good, and oh, we live in the new gated community and blah blah blah. Self-important boobs, all of them. All in all, we probably wouldn't go so far out of our way to make the trek back for quite awhile, but if we were in the area, we would definitely stop for wings and beer. i hope at least you got your passport stamped - lol! nice review -- sounds like you would like an australian styled burger with "the lot," which is a mass of burger toppings that usually consists of tomato, lettuce, onion, fried egg, beet, bacon, pineapple, and cheese: regardless, its amazing how an egg really mellows out the flavor of the burger, isnt it? i never would have thought that until i tried it.
July 8, 201014 yr A good article from the Cleveland Scene: Wisdom From the Masters A celebration of 9 survivors from Cleveland's ever-crowded restaurant scene Zack Bruell Shifting trends: The labor market in Cleveland has improved drastically. When I opened Z, we had to hire people with zero fine-dining experience and train them to do what we wanted. It was naive of me to think that they'd stay with me. I ended up being the training ground for the rest of the city. It's much easier to find talent now. http://www.clevescene.com/cleveland/wisdom-from-the-masters/Content?oid=1944280
July 9, 201014 yr This week's Scene has more info about the remade Boca, which will be called "Roseangel" (?). Described as an "über-casual taqueria" with a "streamlined menu of starters, tacos, and desserts." http://www.clevescene.com/cleveland/bites-butchers-block/Content?oid=1939796 Roseangel is now open. The space looks great. The food however needs some work. Granted it JUST opened, so bear with me. The wines are thankfully better...or at least more to my liking. But just about everything I had was way too bland. Seriously, I had to put Tabasco on everything. I think a Latin place should use more vibrant flavors-Chilis, citrus or what not. I am sitting there wondering how the guy that was from One Walnut and Luxe would have something kind of average. I will say the hanger steak tacos were excellent though (we had a combo of duck confit, braised pork, lobster tacos, plus ceviche). The service was also good and accommodating to special requests but sort of overdone as any other new place just opening. They do appear to be making cocktails from scratch so that is a plus.
July 10, 201014 yr Just ate at roseangel. Pretty much had the same experience. Margaritas were fantastic; we had the pineapple and jalapeno. The food was entirely too bland and the tacos are a rip-off at $4.25. They could probably get away with serving mediocre food and great drinks if they weren't across the street from the Happy Dog and around the corner from Momocho. I can't think of a good excuse to serve a bland taco.
July 10, 201014 yr ^well I did my duty and pleasantly gave my opinion a guy in a chef outfit. I know its Cleveland, land of unspicy food, but it was a little much (or too little in this case). He indicated he could always make something spicier, but not less spicy (???). I think he was saying he could make it spicier if you want, but who want to order bland food and wait around for hot sauce while your food gets cold. And I agree people who don't like spicy food should not eat tacos. Go have meatloaf or turkey or what not.
July 12, 201014 yr We tried Roseangel last night. The space is beautiful and the service was very good. I think the prices are very reasonable. But the food overall was just OK. The homemade corn tortillas are fabulous and almost reason enough to go back. Even though I asked that my order be "kicked up a bit" after reading the comments that the food was bland, it still came out bland. The thing that makes Mexican food so good is the complexity of the flavors. Roseangel totally misses the boat on that. Several of the tacos we tried not only didn't have any heat, they didn't have any flavor. I think the near west side can support two modern Mexican restaurants but Momocho has set a pretty good standard. Roseangle really needs to put some serious work into getting close to being competitive. Hopefully this message gets to the chef.
July 12, 201014 yr ^^What's this chef thinking. People go into a Mexican restaurant wanting and expecting spicy. If somebody complained about "spicy" food in my mexican restaurant I would roll my eyes and tell them to try a good Irish place.
July 12, 201014 yr to me, authentic Mexican is not very spicey, and that is what I love. Now the sauces are spicy, but the food isn't. Im back in the land of Tex Mex, spicy, cheesy, sour creamy, which to me is crappy. I look forward to trying RoseAngel when I come back home.

July 12, 201014 yr Look here, PR, don't make me open up this here can of whup-@ss on you. But, I can elaborate. Not all spicy is hot, and not all hot is spicy. Tex Mex (which I grew up with) is definitely as punch describes, and it is much heavier. Now, there are many varieties of so-called Mexican cuisine. Tex-Mex, for example, is derived from Jalisco-style barbecue, then it takes a crazy turn down Dairy Street. The old Boca had much more in common with Tex-Mex than most other places I've seen around here, so it would have more heat-based spice. I have no idea what Roseangel is going for, and the level and even type of spiciness, but Mexican food isn't generally bland. It should be spicy, but it doesn't have to be hot.

July 12, 201014 yr I agree not all Mexican is spicy, but every style I have had has vibrant or rich in flavor (Ie cumin, cocoa, cinnamon, or citrus are examples of flavors that are not spicy but "warming"). this place was not tapping into any of the beauty of any Mexican style. Heck a mole can have 20 plus ingredients. Beautiful stuff. edit-btw I do not think RoseAngel is billing itself as Mexican rather Latin fusion-y. Yet the items are traditional Mexican. Plus Mojitos (Cuban). No other Cuban on the menu :-(
July 13, 201014 yr Went to flaming ice cube today. Wanted to give them a few days to work out kinks. Overall, a definite thumbs up, but they are still pretty new and working some things out. the positive: the food! I got a mushroom "burger" which was DELISH. It came with a side of potato salad that was decent. I also had a couple of bites of the italian deli "meat" panini which was also delish, and I had a peanut butter crunch "chocolate" dessert that was amazing. very fresh bun on the burger and I REALLY liked that there was no styrofoam, just wrapped the burger in paper and then put the food in a paper bag. I also got a look at the pesto burger and the stuffed pepper soup and both looked fantastic. I say give them a couple more weeks to work out the kinks, I will definitely be going back after a couple as I really enjoyed my food. the neg: cash only (at least for now; they had a CC reader but it's apparently not working). This is bad downtown; several people were writing personal checks when we were there, which they were kind to take, but they need to get the CC situation worked out soon. No takeout menus were available yet, and the service was not exactly smooth, with food not coming out very quickly. I would say we waited at least 20 minutes for our food. The girl taking orders was extremely quiet and unsure of herself - this person is the "face" of the restaurant to the consumer and should be a strong, positive, outgoing presence who is either confident about procedures, or at least able to have some casual conversation and be friendly with the customers. We asked another employee 3x if the muffins in the window were the muffin of the day but she didn't seem to hear us even though she was right next to us. I'm also not sure about the choice to have table service in such a really, really tiny place with only a handful of tables; most people would go to a place like this and think they'd get their lunch from the counter and then sit down, not have to tip a server. I'm sure in the coming weeks they will also decorate it a little. It's painted pretty, with bright, fun colors but needs some art on the walls. Also a big neg for me - no bathroom. I know my list of negs is long, but most of these are very small and likely will be worked out in the coming weeks. We're very glad to see them in downtown. After my repeat visit, if all goes well, I'll be letting people know at work so that they can get some more customers, particularly peeps that i know are vegetarians.
July 13, 201014 yr Sounds like they need some help... I hope it works out for them because Downtown needs a place like this.
July 13, 201014 yr These are fairly typical things with a new place, I'm sure they'll work it out, but it's important to hit the ground running as best you can. And, given that they have another location, I would have expected people from the original store to come open up the new store, and then you train new people gradually as you go over the first 1-2 weeks, and THEN leave the new people to run the place. that way you don't have new store AND new people at the same time.

Thanks R&R...indeed, the kinks will be worked out. There is still a lot of decorating to do and menu items to add among other things. Some complications have delayed opening, but when all is running full force, the kinks will be worked out. More menu items, outdoor seating, signage, working with new employees.... and a small retail section as well as more decor. Management of the place is committed to delivering a quality fresh product. They can also offer catering trays and eventually, probably, delivery. Some of the healthiest food choices downtown...and yummy too! Please let them work the bumps out as it has been a long haul to get this going. Thanks for the good feedback!
July 14, 201014 yr Another nice article on "Zinc:" Zinc Bistro could prove precious metal in Cleveland's Euclid corridor Published: Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 7:00 AM Joe Crea, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Restaurant openings in downtown Cleveland are a lot like spring flowers in bloom: showy, hopeful, even beautiful signs of life's renewal. While sipping one of the French or New Orleans-inspired classic or signature cocktails on Zinc's menu, downtown Cleveland feels like the urban mecca it ought to be. Best of all, at least from an urban planning perspective, the beauty of Zinc's opening is its potential for drawing East Fourth Street diners around the corner and out onto Euclid Avenue. Peppering Euclid with cool destinations like this one would not only enliven the neighborhood but lend greater vitality to the corridor. http://www.cleveland.com/taste/index.ssf/2010/07/zinc_bistro_bar_could_prove_pr.html
July 14, 201014 yr Heard on one of the local morning shows that "Crop" is moving to Ohio City, or has this been covered before?
July 14, 201014 yr Heard on one of the local morning shows that "Crop" is moving to Ohio City, or has this been covered before? Word is they are moving into the old bank building caddy-corner from the Westside Market. Also, Johnny's owns the building Crop is currently in, so I wouldn't be too worried about what will be going there in the future, meaning, they would never allow a loud music-blarring club.

I am disappoint. :( Where are us young music appreciator types to go now that there's no Flats? Ahh, just kidding. :)
July 14, 201014 yr best of all the ground floor of that iconic bank building will be returned to a quite flashy public use! and now w25/lorain has foodie attractions all the way around. bravo -- good luck to them.
July 14, 201014 yr I'm actually quite disappointed at Crop's moving and am not sure I get it. They will completely lose their lunch business now, and I have to think that their dinner numbers will drop as well - warehouse district vs. OC? OC is great but I have to think Flying Fig has fewer diners on a given night than just about anywhere in WHD. Sadly, as I go there about 2-3 times a month for lunch with my co-workers and have suggested Crop time and time again to out of town visitors, I now have to quit suggesting it when people want something close to our office. I have a business contact coming in from NYC next month and part of the reason I agreed to meet with him was so I could take him to crop! Several people from my company who are in out of town or out of state offices regularly go to crop for dinner when they're here and ask other downtown clients along as well. All that will be over now, as they want something in walking distance to our office. Anyone know why they would make this move?
July 14, 201014 yr RnR, They're still be open the rest of the summer...I'm thinking they'll be out of the W.6th location by Oct. Too bad they couldn't have two locations, Crop and Crop 2.0 (like Lola and Lolita). But this does add a authenic restaurant to the "Market District."
July 14, 201014 yr where the F are we going to go for a good, sit-down lunch after October. This sucks.
July 14, 201014 yr where the F are we going to go for a good, sit-down lunch after October. This sucks. Well, there are a plethora of choices along E. 4th and other places such as Zinc. Besides, Crop isn't going to the other side of the moon; it's a 5-minute (at most) drive or cab ride to Ohio City.
July 14, 201014 yr where the F are we going to go for a good, sit-down lunch after October. This sucks. Ironically, Crop was my favorite downtown dining spot too. For lunch, my favs are still Pickwick and Frolic $5 "monday's suck" lunch specials, market cafe and wine bar on E.9th http://www.themarketcafeandwinebar.com/, even Saigon. For quick, I love the Arcade -- Crepe, and Presto. Also Vincenza's Pizza in the Colonial Arcade. I still need to try that rooftop place in the Huntington Building...
July 14, 201014 yr Downtown office workers are not going to pay to take a cab for lunch, and out of all the people I go to lunch with, including my 5 co-workers, only one of them parks at a lot where you have in/out privvys. 4th is complicated. We have a vegetarian who refuses to eat at Michael Symon restaurants, so that's one down. I took everyone as a group to chinato and nobody has been interested in going back because of the cost and formal feeling to it. I've taken 4 people to GHT but nobody liked the menu or food, it was out of their comfort zone. And I personally don't care much for places like HOB (chain) or Pickwick (bad food), or Flannery's (ditto). Hopefully zinc can fill in a hole there, I will give them a try (are they open for lunch yet?)

Also, what didnt make sense is that he said he wanted a less formal laid back space, which from the picture this doesnt appear to be. I guess if its destination enough, like I guess Dante is in secluded Tremont, it may be ok, but I still dont get it, and he will certainly miss out on the downtown lunch crowd. Also Also, I really thought we were going to hear about more of a "plan" for this building , which other than the parking lot, I havent heard much about a plan. I guess they are going the May Co. building route with this.

This is where Pedapods will be the perfect answer! :-D Check them out on the transportation thread area, Or.... www.pedapod.com.au
July 14, 201014 yr ^For the far away places I usually drive and just make everyone pay for my parking. It only ends up being a dollar or two each.
July 14, 201014 yr ^For the far away places I usually drive and just make everyone pay for my parking. It only ends up being a dollar or two each. Wow, seriously? You work with some generous people. Nobody I work with would pay someone to take them to lunch, be it cabbie or friend.

I had the lobster roll which was great, not overly seasoned and the lobster was really good. We sat on the patio and I recommend doing so the view of the BP building is good as it rises above the Euclid Arcade, it also feels quite secluded as you are set a good way back from Euclid (suprisingly the parking garage actually helps with this, it feels more like another wall than a garage entrance).

If we all want to hit w25th for lunch, its cheaper to pay a dollar or 2 for my parking instead of $5 for a round trip on the rapid.
July 14, 201014 yr I guess my folks are even more practical (cheap?). They just won't go if they have to pay to get there.
July 14, 201014 yr I think Crop will do better in OC then Downtown. I don't know when you have been to the Fig but I go weekly and it is always crowded as is Bar Cento, Momocho, GLB, J Mangos, etc. Whatever Crop may lose in the lunch business,a nd I'm not sure they will lose any, they will easily make it up with the late night dinner crowd.
July 14, 201014 yr I had the Lobster Bisque at Southside in Tremont today with a side salad. Fantastic salad and the Lobster Bisque, especially when you add chilli sauce and pepper, was just out of this world. Only 9 bucks for the meal too!
July 15, 201014 yr Is it just me or is Johnny Mangos starting to look really crappy on the outside? Btw...tried a red velvet muffin for a desert today after a great lunch at Flaming Ice...... These are fabulous and made from scratch.
July 15, 201014 yr I can tell you what's really horrifying is the bathrooms at Johnny Mango. It's gone from a quaint, hole in the wall type of place to an absolute dump once you start the walk down towards the bathrooms. The stairs going down are FILTHY and the bathrooms are in very sad, disgusting shape. I realized on my last visit there that this is no longer a place I would take my mother to because if she saw the bathrooms, she would insist on leaving.

Hopefully they work out the kinks in the coming weeks and enjoy some prosperity downtown.
