In on-topic news, I went to Maha's Falafil (sic) cafe today for a takeout lunch. .... Give it a try!

I hope they do well for many reasons. I agree they are very good people and they have a good product..well they need to tweak the shwarma-they may have already. Also I am a huge fan of having healthy non fast food chain options in the more impoverished areas. I hope Metro staff is giving them a try. Whenever I have been behind the scenes there it seems like the personnel loves this type of food-hummus, tabbouleh etc. always seems to be in the back rooms

i'm in the pathology department at metro and we get maha's a lot.

I don't eat downtown a lot but have a bachelor party coming up and I need to plan the dinner venue. What restaurant do you guys recommend for 10-12 guys to hit before a night out on the town? Obviously, something nice, we are not going to have dinner at Panini's.

Depends on what you like in terms of nice. Dressy nice, and good food? Lola, Chinato, Crop. More "buzz?" Try Metropolitan, Cleveland Chop House, Greenhouse Tavern.

I'd probably would say the Chophouse, you generally can't go wrong with guys and steak.

But also $30 per person

For a different spin on steak and other meat, you could also try the churrascaria downtown in the WHD, Brasa. I've never been there, but similar places in other cities have struck me as good bachelor party settings.

I was thinking Chop House and have been there for a bachelor party before, but that was like 5 years ago. Most people are coming here from out of town and I was trying to decide whether I should pick something more trendy??? Chop House might not be trendy, but classic is good too I guess.

I've not heard great things about Brasa, which is the place StrapHanger mentioned. I would think taking out of towners to 4th street would be more impressive initially. You can always adjourn to the WHD later.

Brasa could be a good choice too. Depends on your friends. I set up my best friend's B party at Great Lakes and they put us up in the upstairs room and we might of had a limited menu (not really sure). However pitchers of dortmunder and Christmas Ale, then straight to Hooples for shots , meant the bachelor did not even make it to midnight (we were 25 at the time, and half of the guys were still in school)

Edit: Just saw your post, I'd try Lola, it's a cool space and has the Mike Symon connection.

Yeah Lola might be the best idea. Especially for bringing people from out of town who might be familiar with him.

I've been to a few churrascaria's in other cities (Fogo de Chao & Texas de Brazil in Dallas and Chima's in Ft Lauderdale) and comparing those to Brasa, I would not reccommend Brasa. The Gaucho's don't come around as often, the meat simply wasn't on par with the other places, and as one who goes to those types of places to, quite simply, overindulge, I find the "table card" compared to the "individual card" to be really annoying (they come around when they think the table is ready, regardless if 1 or 2 people alone want more).

I'm not saying Brasa is "bad", but I get really excited to go to say, Chima's, and make it a point to go there when in Ft. Lauderdale. I would not do the same for Brasa.

I've been downtown for group events at Sushi Rock, Greenhouse Tavern, Metro, and Chophouse and thought each of those places did well with a group of your size. My wife also had her bachelorette party at Lolita (not downtown, but not far) and had a great experience (I suspect Lola would be just as good, however more expensive).

Brasa is a good large group crowd pleaser.

Just had lunch at Lola with some out of town friends. It's really hard to reccommend anything over that...and this was just lunch.

It's not open yet. Not until next month?

Had my first Minh Anh experience the other night -- FANTASTIC! Detroit Shoreway, what a great area for restaurantes. The Indian Delight across the street is also great and hope that it continues to do well.

I love Minh Anh, glad to see you discovered it! They have good fresh greens in the market next door.

RJ Bolands on Prospect closed a few weeks ago. I'm kind of surprised because it seemed to always have a decent crowd. I guess the Indians pitiful attendence this year killed them.

it had little to do with business... there were a lot of other factors involved.

Can you elaborate at all?I know I'm being nosey but I'm curious because when I met one the owners he seemed to really have it together. Also, I spoke with their landlord who runs my condo association and he raved about how well organized the owners were.

Are you able to share? (I assume not since you didn't, but I thought it was worth a shot. :) )

I never heard anything good about the place. It seemed to me like it was overpriced chain-style American food.

^ Never heard anything bad though either. I was there once or twice and their Happy Hour pizzas were pretty good.

I don't know all the details, but I know it was messy, and that business wasn't the issue.

I heard someone say it was like an overpriced Applbee's one time, and that's definitely bad in my book. :) Not that I didn't want to go there and form my own opinion, but it definitely influenced my decision a few times when I could have eaten there but decided on another place instead.

^That wouldn't have been my first thought. Mostly because there wasn't a Radio Flyer tacked up on the wall.

I think they were mostly referring to the food quality, not the decorations.

At least the space was built-out nicely and should find another tenant (I hope).

Anyone know if the Cambodian sandwich place opened up in the Arcade?

Very surprising about RJ Bolands. I haven't been there in a little while but that was my favorite place to get drinks after Cavs/Indians games. It's a shame it closed because it was a fun bar that was a little more upscale for a "sports bar". Hopefully something similar moves in because I much preferred it to Winking Lizard, Panini's, the Clevelander, etc.

I know I didn't directly mention it, but that was not the vibe that I got from the place at all.

Agree wholeheartedly. More relaxed and the TV's around the Bar were not set to an annoying level. EC would have liked it.

That is really surprising about RJ. It really seemed to have that young professional patronage, especially with attorneys. I would certainly like to learn more about what happened.

Dim and Den Sum Plans Actual Restaurant, More Trucks

"The answer came last week, when a partnership was struck with restaurateur Alan Glazen and the red-hot team behind ABC Tavern on West 25th St. and the forthcoming XYZ Tavern in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood. In the works, says Glazen, is a bricks-and-mortar Dim and Den Sum on West 25th St., in a locale they’ve identified but prefer not to reveal just yet. Also on tap are additional trucks to spread the Dim Sum lovin’ to a wider audience."

Michael Symon is closing Bar Symon in Avon.

Biting off more than can chew? What happened?

Biting off more than can chew? What happened?

Here's the story, but the gist is that the individual receipts were too low to sustain that size of a restaurant. Also, the location (end of a strip mall with high vacancy in Avon Lake) probably didn't help. It was a good concept, though.

Also, only having one restaurant out of 4.5 (including Lola, Lolita, B-Spot, and the Q's Bar Symon) isn't too shabby.

I am not surprised about that. The location was terrible.

Bar Symon would have done gangbusters at Crocker Park...probably even Avon Commons, just down 83 a bit. But that location in Avon Lake was just puzzling. The strip mall was truly depressing, and now has claimed two restaurants that didn't deserve to go (Swingos Grand Tavern being the first). Here's hoping he tries again elsewhere (as indicated in the article) because the restaurant itself filled a great niche.

He opened a nice restaurant in Avon Lake. Many have tried. Except Fratello's, all have failed. People move to Avon Lake because they like dining at Applebee's or TGI Fridays. If they gave two sh-ts about having something better close by, that wouldn't move out there.

cleveland's breweries are primed for delicious growth

Jeff Niesel Thursday, October 07, 2010

Prior to Prohibition, Northeast Ohio was home to some 30 breweries and boasted a reputation for producing several fine frothy malts. In fact, brewing was some of the earliest and most robust industry Cleveland had going for it. Prohibition, of course, managed to dry up all but a precious few pints.

The good news? The brewing industry in Northeast Ohio is not only alive and well -- it's growing.

^ very cool. Thanks.

I had a good time last night on East 4th- I started off going to the Chocolate Bar to meet up with the wifey... and had a martini that tasted JUST LIKE a chocolate covered cherry (YUM)!! I think that's my new favorite! She ordered the peanut-butter cup martini (TASTY). We stayed there for a minute, then walked over to La Strada to see what was going on... but since we didn't eat at the Chocolate Bar we walked over to Zocala's to grab something to eat. We got to catch the last quarter of the Lakers vs. Warriors game (which went into overtime, but we left at the end of the 4th), with myself munching on a very tasty burrito with rice and a glass of merlot to sip. She ordered a quesadilla- which she thought was plain so she kept taking the salsa and sour cream that came with my plate. We left from there to go back to La Strada... as many times as we've been on E.4th we hadn't been in the place until last night. I liked the blend the dj was using of maracas along with the bongo player's drumming to the uptempo club music. We stayed for maybe an hour and danced- and she loved it so I'm sure we'll be going back soon!!

Jeni’s Ice Creams is Expanding to Cleveland Area

Back in August, we interviewed Jeni Britton Bauer and Charly Bauer of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, and they dropped a few hints about their first expansion outside of Central Ohio being somewhere in the Cleveland area. That expansion is now being made official with plans to open a scoop shop this Spring in Chagrin Falls, a suburb located roughly 35 minutes east of Downtown Cleveland.

The new store will be located at 67 N. Main Street in Chagrin Falls, and will feature all of the signature and seasonal flavors, sundaes and ice cream macaroons available in Jeni’s Central Ohio stores.
