Two late-night spots coming to downtown... first up and most notable, it seems DPDough is moving into 230 Euclid Avenue where Jimmy John's used to be. According to the door they will be open until 4AM

Walked past the old Caddy Shack Lounge space today and noticed it says "Nexus Coffee and Coffeehouse Opening Spring 2012."  Looking at their website it appears that the Gateway Church is the owner.

I've started making note of great servers and I ask for them by name now when I make reservations. It's so hard to get a great server ANYWHERE but as far as these restaurants... Ask for Tessa or Kim at L'albatross. And Jeanette at Table 45. Still getting options for Chinato and Parallax...!

The old Octane Cafe space on Euclid is going to become Colossal Cupcakes, they have a sign out now.

That space seems like it would be really large for a cupcake shop, but I suppose if they use it for more than just retail and expand the kitchen it would be about the right size.  Either way it is good to see something go into that spot, especially something that is not just another sandwich place.

Ran into Hodge tonight downtown and asked about his spot.  he states he will be open by St. Pattys day and that thing are coming along nicely.

Hey, can anyone recommend a good Croatian restaurant? Thanks.

There is no true bakery in Downtown.  I remember when Hough Bakery was on the square and the line would be 20 deep at any point of the day.  Damn now I want a Hough bakery sugar coookie!  Anyway, this is a plus for downtown as a whole.  We're gaining a traditional neighborhood business, that is an asset for downtown all around.

Any initial reviews of Cowell and Hubbard?

From the few photos I've seen floating around on line (http://cowellhubbard.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/MG_9650-e1328290900765.jpeg) the interior looks fantastic.

Ate there Friday, I thought it was really good, big menu with lots of apps. Recommend the Crispy Pork Stack and Creamed Cauliflower. I got the Whitefish as well, similar to what Bumsquare stated, I don't think it was seasoned. Maybe it was, but it was under seasoned to say the least. Salt really goes a long way at bringing out flavors trapped in.

I will definitely go back though and I also concur that I have never walked out of a Bruell spot disappointed.

^I find that interesting as one of the few constant complaints I hear about Bruell's restaurants is that they use too much salt.  Go figure.

Currently looking for as an authentic as possible Croatian place. Digging around online, I found 2 potential Croatian restaurants. Does anyone know which is better or anything about either of them?

1. Mrki's Place, 5379 St. Clair

2. Croatian Tavern, 3244 St. Clair

Yeah there have been many afternoons that I have needed a sugar fix.  This place is just a little too close though...

I know the area fairly well and I've never heard of either of those places having Croatian food.  Doesn't mean that they don't, but I'd be surprised if they do and if it's traditional.  The only place I know of is Dubrovnik Gardens in Eastlake.

^Okay thanks. Maybe I'll give the Mrki's place a shot in the dark. Eastlake is bit far, but how is Dubrovnik Gardens?

Not too exciting but I got a tweet today from someone supposedly "In the know" that both Chipotle and Five Guys have signed leases for spaces in downtown.  No specific locations were given.

Commence head explosion...

Nice - don't know what the problem is with a Chipotle and Five Guys.  Infill baby.  Yum.

^ It was a excitement head explosion. I love Chipotle and I am sick of driving to steelyard

^ There is it... nice!

OMG I would LOVE a Chipotle downtown! Squee! Someone tell me where when they know.

Thank the good Lord!  Everytime I'm at Steelyard for Chipotle I leave in a bad mood due to the annoying drive and the constant line to the door and the slow service.

I love Chipotle and I'm psyched if they come downtown, but if I'm going to drive out of downtown then I am going to Ohio City Burrito. IMO, they have the best quick service burritos in Cleveland.

^ Are you a fan of The Other Half?

What is the difference between a good chain and a bad chain?  I agree that chipotle and five guys=good and tilted kilt= bad, but why is that?  is it just because we like a good burrito and don't like a sleezy sports bar?

Chipotle is one of the only chains I will eat at. They source their meat from very good places, real farms, and local when possible.

Yes.

Apparently a new restaurant opening in Ohio City called "Town Hall" from the owner of Lago...but is partnering with owner of Barley house.  McNulty and friends NOT OK with this...thoughts?  I think if it focuses on good food and beer, things will be OK.  Do not solicit any d-bags and meatheads and things should be OK

@Whipjacka

I think if you break it down into categories of chains it makes more sense.  Chipotle and Five Guys are judged in a category closer to Subway and McDonald's while the Tilted Kilt is put up against Bar/Restaurant's and gets slapped with the gimmick and sleeze labels.

^ And not only that, realize the context in what this "breast-aurant" is replacing.

Fat Fish Blue attraction:  blues venue that was home to legendary Robert Lockwood Jr.

Twisted Kilt attraction:  boobs.

Now I'm all for boobs believe me, but there is simply no comparison on which establishment reflects better on CLE. This is another case of Idiocracy in action, where the dumber, gimmicky, more corporate entity comes out the winner.

I saw the presentation that was given to OCI by this company, and it seems to be a BW-3 type sports bar/restaurant.  I think it will solicit the crowd mentioned above.

Interesting.  Then I wonder what the "concept not done before in Cleveland is all about...

^ Cant OCI chime in and have influence over the tenants?  BW3 type place is not necessary in that artisan district.  I do like Lago, but i hate Barley House

I agree about the boob things, but one piece of this puzzle we do not know is FFB financial status.  I too wish a better tenant was lined up, but as a landlord, I may have taken the best offer.

Liquor license search today shows that Burntwood Tavern, the popular Chagrin Falls eatery, with a recently-opened Rocky River location, will be taking over the former Max & Erma's space in Solon.  That will make two locations barely 10 minutes away. Interesting choice - though the modestly-sized Chagrin Falls spot, with too-small lot, has become so popular that parking has become an issue.

I just noticed 5 Guys in Steelyard -- am I blind -- has it alwys been there?  In any case, glad it is!!!

^ That is pretty recent. Last few months I believe.

has anyone peeked in on the work being done on the new greek restaurant santorini on w25th? that sounds like it will be awesome.

Wait. A greek place is going in? How do I not know about this?! Deets, anyone?

Here is the Scene article:

Karakostas has commissioned a sort of all-star team of Greek investors, designers, and others to bring his dream to life in the heart of Ohio City: Santorini, a new upscale-leaning Greek restaurant, will be nestled next to Orale on West 25th Street by winter's end.

Squeeee!

Of course ill never frown upon more storefronts being filled...but we need shopping!!  restaurants may be oversaturating the area.

I don't think the Five Guys in Steelyard is open yet.

We went to Taza on W. 6th on Friday night with a group of friends.  The service was great, and the entrees and apps we had were all excellent.  I'd highly recommend it to anyone!

Squeeee!

If you like Greek food try the place in Detroit Shoreway. Really good food.

What greek place? There's like a gyro shack looking place there, is that what you mean?

Speaking of Greek, I've been hitting Nick's #1 Gyro about 2x a week since I started a low carb diet (they do a greek salad with lamb on top...love it). I realize it's in the boondocks (Mentor), but it's right around the corner from my office and he makes some of the best gyros I've eaten.

Of course I'm a Scottish/Norwegian Jew, so what do I know from greek food?

Thanks AJ, I might have to try it. I'll google map it from my office.
