March 28, 201213 yr Deli to open in old Local Heroe's/Cooperstown space: New deli option coming in former Local Heroes, Coopers'Town location; another Restaurant Week launches in April: Restaurant Row Matt Creighton, who formerly worked as co-executive chef for the defunct Melange restaurant in Beachwood, has some cool news of his own. Sometime around the Cleveland Indians' home opener Thursday, April 5, Creighton will launch a new venture on East Ninth Street across from Progressive Field. Read more: http://www.cleveland.com/taste/index.ssf/2012/03/new_deli_option_coming_in_form.html Nice. Sounds like a substantial culinary upgrade over Heroes and Cooperstown - the last two ventures. We need more stability around the JAKE....still waiting for Gateway to reach its potential. Hopefully this place will be a solid step in that direction.
March 28, 201213 yr I'm very excited about this one. We really need a deli downtown and Melange had some very good reviews. I will be going early into their opening.
March 28, 201213 yr Also, Nexus Cafe was giving out coffee samples this morning in the old Caddyshack patio; they said the grand opening is Monday.
March 28, 201213 yr I'm very excited about this one. We really need a deli downtown and Melange had some very good reviews. I will be going early into their opening. Funny because the other executive chef from Melange, Adam Bostwick ended up executive chef at Hodges. So I guess Melange isnt reopening after all.....
March 28, 201213 yr Yeah, not sure what happened there with Melange. Am excited for Hodges but as per usual won't be able to go til they start serving lunches.
March 28, 201213 yr ^Two executive chefs at such a small space. Doesn't sound like great cost control to me. Maybe that is one of the reasons they are no more.
March 28, 201213 yr Well, I heard it wasn't a "cost" issue, but that's all I know. Too many cooks, etc.
March 29, 201213 yr eat this! clevelanders dish on their top local eats Erin O'Brien | Thursday, March 29, 2012 East, west, north and south: The culinary choices bestowed upon Cleveland foodies are dizzying, to say the least. But everybody has his or her favorite -- that one dish that inflates them with joy while feeding the heart, body and soul. Fresh Water contributor Erin O'Brien caught up with a crop of Cleveland movers and shakers and asked each of them to dish up the skinny on their top local nosh in their own home-cooked words. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/features/bestthingieverate032912.aspx
April 2, 201213 yr Black Dog Kitchen and Bar opening this summer at 8th & Euclid http://www.facebook.com/BlackDogKitchenandBar/info
April 2, 201213 yr As far as i know, Yes. Btw, the coffee at Nexus is terrific. And Im not a regular coffee drinker
April 2, 201213 yr Went to El Guero for the 2nd time last night and they must've changed their hot sauce. The first time I went it was not hot at all and this time it was very hot. My meal seemed to be much more satisfying on my 2nd try and I will be going back.
April 2, 201213 yr Hodge's opens for lunch today. I should know, I am dining g at the bar right now! Bartender said there is a chancentheir patio may be nonsmoking when completed, which would be so awesome and make it the first patio I can stand to sit on.
April 2, 201213 yr ^^El Guero posted on facebook last night that they just launched their new hot sauce. Glad to see them responding to their customers. I've had El Guero three times now and each time it has gotten better. Let's hope they can keep going in the right direction.
April 2, 201213 yr haha...I posted "love it" :) There's also a permit across from Horseshoe on Ontario a couple doors down from Tilted Kilt that is talking about restaurant space.
April 2, 201213 yr This makes me sad and scared. I really liked the Garage bar and Dragonfly and the diversity they brought to West 25th. Doors Shut on Dragonfly and Garage Bar Posted by Douglas Trattner on Mon, Apr 2, 2012 at 4:39 PM dragonfly.jpg As of today, Dragonfly and Garage Bar (1865 W. 25th St.) are closed. Marlin Kaplan, chef and owner, says that landlord Adam Waldbaum decided to shutter the businesses without warning. "I found out he slammed the doors just like everybody else," Kaplan told me. "The business was really doing well." http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2012/04/02/doors-shut-on-dragonfly-and-garage-bar
April 3, 201213 yr This makes me sad and scared. Hopefully I'm wrong but it seems as if the landlord gave them the boot in order to combine the space and charge a higher rent. Hopefully he doesn't sell out to a chain (or hopefully I'm just wrong). Either way I really liked the Garage bar and the diversity it brought to West 25th. "The business was really doing well." http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2012/04/02/doors-shut-on-dragonfly-and-garage-bar There is no way the story is this simple. The "everything was just fine and he just locked us out for no reason" story doesn't hold water. I don't claim to know any details, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say it boils down to a couple of rich guys fighting about money.
April 3, 201213 yr extremely disappointed in this. Momentum slows a bit with this one. Lets keep our fingers crossed that a quality establishment takes its place.
April 3, 201213 yr I was just at Dragonfly last week! That sucks- I really liked the place. Yeah this is really terrible news. Both places, in my opinion, were excellent, and were perfect ingredients for a unique and attractive W. 25th. Any way you spin this it's not good.
April 3, 201213 yr I cant believe they couldnt negotiate like adults for the better of the neighborhood. This does nothing but hinder progress.
April 3, 201213 yr When you don't pay your rent you get booted - that's what happened. Assuming you're right, why would they not be paying? Unless they actually weren't doing well although he said they were? Both places always seemed to get people in the door.
April 3, 201213 yr My foodie sources all overwhelmingly point the finger at Marlin on this one. Not sure what the story is but he apparently doesn't have a very good reputation. He also VERY recently stepped down as the president of Cleveland Independents so it sounds like a complicated story there.
April 3, 201213 yr Copying/pasting something I saw on FB: I just poked around in PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records) and found an involuntary bankruptcy filed by Adam Waldbaum, Marlin Kaplan, and Heil Building, Inc. (Adam's company, which owns the building) against 1859 West 25th Str...eet, Inc. (a company that owns Garage Bar, owned by Lisa Waldbaum) in December 2011. The filers failed to proceed after filing the case and it was dismissed for lack of prosecution. I suspect whatever was behind that filing, which was dismissed in January 2012, might have had something to do with Dragonfly's demise. Case No. 11-20508-pmc. From the Ohio Secretary of State's records, it appears that Adam was the landlord, since his company was formed to own the real estate. Lisa's company was formed to operate a restaurant in the premises. Family feud?
April 3, 201213 yr haha...I posted "love it" :) There's also a permit across from Horseshoe on Ontario a couple doors down from Tilted Kilt that is talking about restaurant space. That permit has been there for close to 9 months now. I don't think much has been going on recently, but don't have any inside information. I would actually be surprised if the place opens anytime soon.
April 3, 201213 yr Is this about Jeff and Ursula, or Marlin and Melissa? I would have though about Jeff and Ursula since last I knew they were going through a nasty divorce. I dont know why it would be about Marlin if it involves Garage Bar, and since Jeff and Ursula were the owners of both (although I suspect what R@R is saying about Marlin may have some truth to it, he seems to be going through his own stuff.... *Ok, I dont think Im familiar with Adam or Lisa..
April 3, 201213 yr I asked because Marlin and Melissa have just gone through a divorce (still going?). If I recall correctly, she got Luxe restaurant in the divorce
April 3, 201213 yr I asked because Marlin and Melissa have just gone through a divorce (still going?). If I recall correctly, she got Luxe restaurant in the divorce Thats right. But Marlin didnt really have anything to do with Garage, and I dont beleive he had an ownership stake in Dragonfly (although he may have had a newly created one since its reincarnation.
April 3, 201213 yr I thought he did have an ownership stake in it, but that's just my guess. I do think this is bad timing (actually there's no good time for stufff like this) with the Market District's resurgence and all the festivities planned for this summer and fall. It's unfortunate for a lot of reasons, I hope replaecments are found soon.
April 3, 201213 yr I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but ... Marlin Kaplan's Dragonfly, Garage Bar close in Cleveland: Restaurant Row Published: Tuesday, April 03, 2012, 3:26 PM By Joe Crea, The Plain Dealer "It's a drama worthy of Tolstoy or Verdi, but at least this much is clear: At this moment, the doors are closed at Dragonfly and Garage Bar in Ohio City. There's plenty of he-said/he-said between the restaurants' principals, chef-operator Marlin Kaplan and landlord Adam Waldbaum. " http://www.cleveland.com/dining/index.ssf/2012/04/marlin_kaplans_dragonfly_garag.html
April 3, 201213 yr I just spoke to a friend who told me that Dragonfly just recently opened a patio out back of the building and I wanted to check it out. Hopefully they figure out their problems shortly rather than fill the spaces with new businesses.
April 3, 201213 yr Ughhh. I went to Dragonfly when it first opened and really enjoyed it, have been back several times since. Good place. I have trouble believing it closed for lack of money, unless there's something siphoning off the profits. And though I wasn't a huge fan, Garage bar definitely brought something different to the area, so that's a significant (perhaps more significant) loss for the neighborhood.
April 3, 201213 yr Glad to hear that El Guero has improved. I went once early on, and was not happy about it. Their business really slowed down but hopefully the changes will keep customers coming back, or thinking of coming back. THere's gonna be some competition for WHD fast-casual soon. If the WHD Barroco Grill is anything like the Birdtown location, people will probably choose to go there over El Guero. Renewed activity at Tomo Japanese. Hauling in big items last night.
April 3, 201213 yr Noodlecat just announced on Facebook that they will open a west side market location in April. No more details given about whether counter or other...
April 4, 201213 yr Rode by on Detroit Avenue and saw a restaurant at West 111th with an outdoor dining area. I haven't noticed this restaurant before, so I assume it's new. It's on the ground floor of a brownstone apartment building. Anyone know what this place is? April 4, 201213 yr http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2012/04/03/noodlecat-to-land-at-west-side-market Noodlecat to Land at West Side Market POSTED BY DOUGLAS TRATTNER ON TUE, APR 3, 2012 AT 9:09 PM "We've been talking to Gary [Thomas, owner of Ohio City Pasta] since December about putting a Noodlecat into the Sideshow space," says Jonathon Sawyer, still on a plane at Miami International Airport. The West Side Market space, right across the aisle from Ohio City Pasta, has been vacant for months. "We're going to take off from where Noodlecat started," Sawyer adds. "We'll be blanching noodles to order the exact same way as in the restaurant."
April 4, 201213 yr Really liked Hodge's. Beautiful build-out and the food was very good. Drinks were STOUT ... I got a little drunk off of a cosmo. Haha. I was a fan of Zinc, but I think Hodge's is using the space more effectively, and it was pretty packed last night ...
April 4, 201213 yr Just saw on Facebook that Barley House snapped up the Dragonfly space. Not sure if that's true.
April 4, 201213 yr ^^Happy to hear that a downtown restaurant was fairly packed on a Tuesday night with nothing going on (actually was anything going on?).
April 4, 201213 yr Just saw on Facebook that Barley House snapped up the Dragonfly space. Not sure if that's true. This will be the place that McNulty was griping about?
April 4, 201213 yr Just saw on Facebook that Barley House snapped up the Dragonfly space. Not sure if that's true. If that is true, I'm not thrilled at all.
April 4, 201213 yr UGH Re: Barley House. And RnR, you're a mod now? I missed that completely! Congrats!
April 4, 201213 yr Ugh is right. But I dont see how that could be true. The Barley House group is supposedly going for the old Ohio City Blooms space (next to Alaturka), the one that they want to remodel for a million and call Town Hall.
