Wow, that license plate is horribly unsophisticated...then again that is the path Ohio leaders seem to prefer.

There should be a law that the plates can only be updated every 10 years or something. People should not have to buy new plates for each new governor. Glad I just renewed mine for 2 years.

NY and California don't change their plates that often at all. Follow their lead. The current plate is fine but I like the old green ones from the 80s

There is no law that says you need to get new plates every time you renew. I think on one of my cars, the plates go back to the Strickland administration which is a few plate designs ago and for me a few cars ago. You can also take old plates with you and transfer them over to your new car.

The updated plate designs are just opportunities for new revenue for those who 1) need a new plate and can't transfer  2) encourages people to upgrade becuase some people just like newer items, and 3) serves as a form of civic pride in some corners

New York came out with the awful orange and blue plate that looks like an Ohio DUI plate from afar.   They lasted the full 10 years of residents complaining about them.  I think it was a ploy to get everyone there to buy the more expense custom and vanity plates.

Ha I actually like the NY plates

Everyone hated this previous iteration of the Ohio license plate - I was made fun of on more than one occasion over this plate:

Ohio-License-Plate.jpg

I think it only lasted a couple years before Ohio came out with the current simple plate.

Instead of sticking with the current one - someone, for some reason - decided to revamp the old plate that everyone hated. The new plate is just an update of this one, and it's just as bad.

Whenever I saw NY plates I always got them confused with the OH party plates

When I started seeing more and more of them in my Cleveland westside neighborhood I felt bad for these people driving around in the suburbs.  Im sure more than one cop followed them after seeing the orange plate from a distance!

It's a license plate, not a work of art.  Keep it simple, stupid!

Northwest Territories still has the all time best one IMO

bring back the plain plates -- even fixed, this might be the worst plate ever.

i mean, just for example, what are those buildings from? the last airbender?

at minimum they should take out the bizzarely childish ohio font in the state and move 'ohio' to the banner or the bottom.

then in honor of father dewine it could be replaced with a fetus image.

better yet, the 2001 starchild.  😂

I wouldn't suggest trying to fly a banner from the Wright Brothers plane.

They also had the plane backwards in the first version during the press conference lol.  They had to fix it.

What's the over-under on where this new design lands on lists of worst state license plates? Because it's got to be top 5 bad. It's like Alabama or Indiana, just even busier.

I'm still driving around with that one, haha. It was Strickland & his wife's pick, then Kasich nixed it. Apparently DeWine's tastes are more in line with Strickland's.

The best Ohio plates were when I was a kid in the 90s - white and blue with the cursive "The Heart of It All!"

Those yellow NY plates are actually "throwbacks" in a sense. NY plates were yellow like that back in the mid-20th century, and from what I understand were kind of iconic at that time in NY. The modern version was a nod to those classics.

The Farmville plates are horrible.  I managed to avoid them and keep my 1997 era plates until they were phased out.  I heard a rumor they were designed by Strickland's wife or a connection.

I was very unenthusiastic about Kasich, and even considered voting for Strickland (the NRA endorsement helped there LOL).   His hate for these plates and the pink licenses made me happier about voting for him.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and U.S. Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman all wrote or signed on to letters advocating for more lenient restrictions at steel facilities in Ohio and West Virginia owned by Ukrainian oligarchs, a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette investigation has found. The oligarchs are alleged to have acquired a vast portfolio of American real estate and metallurgical assets with proceeds from an elaborate money laundering scheme.

DeWine Doesn’t Want to Talk About Ohio’s Abortion Ban Forcing a Child to Travel to Indiana

It appears that a 10-year-old rape victim had to leave Ohio for an abortion. But Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine isn’t commenting on the fact that a law he signed making that necessary if she didn’t want to become a mother.

Shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade and cleared the way for the law to take effect, the child was on her way to Indiana for an abortion because she couldn’t get one in Ohio, an Indianapolis OB-GYN told the Indianapolis Star. The doctor, Caitlin Bernard, told the paper that an Ohio child-abuse doctor had called, saying the child was six weeks and three days pregnant and needed help.

That was three days after the six-week limit the DeWine-signed law places on abortion in Ohio. It makes no exceptions for women and children who are victims of rape and incest.

The story has made national news. But DeWine seemed unprepared Wednesday to discuss whether legislation he championed is forcing children out of state if they don’t want to have their rapists’ babies.

“Yeah, first of all, I have no more information than you do or anybody does. Reading in the in the paper, it came came as you know, from a story out of out of Indiana from from a doctor over there,” he said as part of a rambling answer to a question from the Cincinnati Enquirer, according to a transcript.

Gov. DeWine Says Ohio Has Made “Great Progress” for Families and Children

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine’s rhetoric about some of the most vulnerable Ohioans doesn’t appear to match the reality if data released last week are any guide.

The governor has been refusing to talk about some of the most controversial aspects of strict new abortion restrictions that he signed into law in 2019 and which took effect when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v Wade on June 24. Instead, his staff has been referring the press to comments the governor made just after he signed the law, Senate Bill 23, and just after the high court issued its decision in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health.

In neither speech did DeWine address the fact that S.B. 23 doesn’t make exceptions for victims of rape, people with intellectual disabilities or children who become pregnant. And while he spoke in both speeches about the importance of protecting the “vulnerable,” DeWine still hasn’t answered publicly when asked if he supports a provision in the law that forced a 10-year-old rape victim to go out of state for an abortion.

The law also requires the vast majority of women and girls to carry pregnancies to term after about six weeks of pregnancy — a point at which as many as a third don’t yet know they’re pregnant. In 2020, for example, 70% of girls and women — or more than 14,000 — who got abortions in Ohio got them after six weeks of pregnancy.

Records Show Link Between DeWine and FirstEnergy Bribery Scandal

Gov. Mike DeWine and his administration played a hands-on role passing an allegedly pay-for-play nuclear bailout and appointing an industry-friendly regulator who has since been accused of taking a $4.3 million bribe, documents and messages show.

Calendar records show DeWine, a Republican, met repeatedly to discuss energy policy with FirstEnergy Corp. officials and at least once with GOP House Speaker Larry Householder, who has been criminally accused of taking a separate, multimillion-dollar bribe from the company to pass the bailout.

Despite a cautionary letter from environmental groups and a 198-page dossier from his former campaign staffer warning against the move, DeWine appointed Sam Randazzo in 2019 to the head of the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. FirstEnergy last summer admitted it paid Randazzo a $4.3 million bribe. Randazzo has not been charged with a crime and denies wrongdoing.

Newly released text messages show FirstEnergy executives describing an open line with the administration on the selection and inside support from Ohio’s chief executive.

“When the Gov Elect asked me about attributes, I listed integrity, work ethic, creativity, thick skin, circumspection in public statements,” FirstEnergy’s then CEO texted Randazzo about the open PUCO seat in December 2018, just before DeWine took office.

“You fit all of those.”

Gov. DeWine Unveils Spending Plan Details

Last week, Ohioans got their first look at the governor’s budget proposal. Lawmakers got their first chance to ask questions about his plans.

Gov. Mike DeWine outlined the broad strokes of his spending plan in his state of the state address, late last month. He put heavy emphasis on supporting families through tax incentives, education policy and a new cabinet department focused on youth.

In the Ohio House finance committee, budget director Kim Murnieks began laying out the dollars and cents underpinning DeWine’s spending proposal.

All told, the administration wants to spend $103.3 billion in the coming fiscal year followed by $99.8 billion in the next. A significant share of those dollars come from the federal government to help fund programs like Medicaid.

Zeroing in on the state’s discretionary spending, DeWine’s proposal appropriates $28.1 billion in the first year and $29.4 billion in the second. The tax revenue forecast for the coming years is $28.7 billion and $30.1 billion respectively.

2024 State of the State Address: All About The Kids

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine put children at the center of his 2024 State of the State address Wednesday afternoon. He took credit for recent policies to improve reading and offered a few new ideas, too — increase access to child care, improve education outcomes, and bolster health and vision care.

But perhaps most impactful for families, he argued schools need to limit access smartphones in classrooms.

“A number of Ohio schools have made the decision to eliminate smartphone use during the school day,” DeWine argued, “and I believe clearly that is the right decision.”

DeWine threw his support behind legislation sponsored by state Sen. Andrew Brenner, R-Delaware, that would require districts to enact a policy minimizing access to phones in the classroom.

“I fully support this measure and encourage the General Assembly to take up this legislation and pass it quickly.”

DeWine also acknowledged the headwinds his administration has faced when it comes to kids and phones. A provision in Ohio’s budget would’ve required social media companies to get parental consent for users under 16. A federal judge has blocked that law, and DeWine urged lawmakers to use that ruling to come up with a replacement.

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle seemed skeptical.

State of the State: Gov. DeWine Talks Ohio Issues at CMC Event

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine answered questions about abortion, redistricting, lawmakers overriding his vetoes and the power struggle in the Ohio House during the most recent Columbus Metropolitan Club weekly forum.

Statehouse News Bureau reporter Jo Ingles asked DeWine several questions during the hour-long forum and here is a rundown of what the governor had to say.

Overriding DeWine’s vetoes

The Ohio legislature overrode two of DeWine’s vetoes earlier this year — one banning gender-affirming care for transgender youth and the other blocks cities from banning flavored tobacco sales.

The gender-affirming care ban was set to take effect at the end of April, but a Franklin County Court of Common Pleas judge issued a temporary restraining order on the bill.

When asked if DeWine feels at odds with Ohio’s legislative leaders, he acknowledged “there’s some areas where we have disagreed.”

That's what happens when you have so many ultra-conservative monoculture feifdoms as districts. Even DeWine is considered a "liberal".

Ohio looks like a chump, and the butt of jokes. 7th largest population state, 7th largest GDP in the nation and its GOP majority leaders drag it into the gutter to further the narrative of it being a washed up, no place, has been. Dewine is old school and trying ever so slightly to change that narrative, but its a band aid on the problem. He's still a big part of the problem, but in this day and age with Ohio so beat down by its own leaders...he seems decent I suppose?

DeWine is polite and won't turn away federal money, but that's about where it ends.

He's upset with Vance and Trump throwing Springfield to the racist wolves, but he won't denounce the ticket.

He says he doesn't like the gerrymandered maps he voted for, but he won't endorse Issue 1.

He says gun violence needs to be addressed, but signs bills making gun access easier.

And all this makes him a better Republican governor than most.
