I truly believe that all black cops should start randomly pulling over white people.

One time in the '90s I got pulled over because my windows were tinted and the cops actually said "With the windows tinted like that you guys looked like you were black and that's a good way to get shot."

DeWine unveils reforms to reduce gun violence, boost mental health services

...

DeWine’s proposals include:

Safety Protection Orders: DeWine is asking the legislature to pass a law to allow courts to issue Safety Protection Orders that would remove firearms from potentially dangerous individuals and get them the mental health treatment they need all while maintaining an individual’s right to due process.

Increased Access to Inpatient Psychiatric Care: Over the past several years, Ohio’s state psychiatric hospitals have become predominantly used by patients who are court-ordered there for restoration to competency to stand trial. This week, 79 percent of the adults in state psychiatric hospitals are under court order.  The Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) is working to create a process in which courts and community-based providers can work together to restore competency for those to stand trial in an outpatient setting that will free more hospital beds and decrease wait time for admission. The Ohio General Assembly will need to pass legislation to create this community-based misdemeanor competency restoration process.

Early Intervention: As part of the 2019-20 biennium operating budget, the state is investing $675 million in wrap-around services for schools to design individualized programs, working with local mental health providers or social service organizations, to address the social and emotional challenges our students face.

Background Checks: DeWine is calling on the Ohio General Assembly to pass a law requiring background checks for all firearms sales in the state of Ohio with certain limited, reasonable exceptions, including gifts between family members.

Increased Penalties for Felons Who Illegally Possess Firearms: Gun violence occurs in neighborhoods and communities every day across Ohio and the nation. Law enforcement reports that the majority of this violence is perpetrated by a relatively small number of individuals who don’t have the right to possess a gun. DeWine is calling on the General Assembly to increase penalties on felons who illegally possess or use guns.

Increased Penalties for Brandishing a Gun: DeWine says the General Assembly should pass a law that increases the penalty for those who commit a felony while brandishing a firearm to a mandatory three- to five-year sentence.

Increased Penalties for Illegally Obtained Guns: We should increase the penalty for a person who possesses a firearm that they know was obtained through an illegal or fraudulent purchase in order to avoid a federal background check.  A person who possesses the gun should be punished in the same manner as a person who bought the firearm, increasing the penalty to a second-degree felony punishable by two- to- eight years in prison.

Increased Penalties for Those Who Improperly Provide Firearms to Minors: Too many kids are carrying guns on the streets often with tragic consequences. Adults who furnish firearms to minors must be held accountable.  DeWine proposes the General Assembly increase the penalty for improperly providing a firearm to a minor to and a third-degree felony punishable by up to three years in prison.

Ohio voters strongly back coronavirus lifestyle restrictions, and majority support Donald Trump’s re-election, poll shows

"President Donald Trump is narrowly ahead in Ohio in his re-election bid and getting positive marks on coronavirus and the economy in new polling released Thursday. But more decisive is what the poll said about the lifestyle restrictions Gov. Mike DeWine has imposed to combat COVID-19.

Huge majorities of Ohioans support closing K-12 schools (87.7% to 6.7%), limiting public gatherings (86.2% to 7.8%), closing daycare centers (81.5% to 9%), closing restaurants and bars (76.5% to 14.3%), and changing the primary election date (70.6% to 16.1%), the Great Lakes Poll found.

And when it comes to DeWine, a national leader in imposing such restrictions, 79.9% say they approve of the job he is doing during the crisis."

Northeast Ohio is the only part of the state that had more people say they thought DeWine lifted restrictions too fast than not quickly enough.

We still need to create the state of Erie.

I'm more confused by that geographic breakdown.  South and West Central?  Wouldn't it be, oh, I dunno, easier to do SW and SE Ohio?  Strange.

I guess that without much of a bottom-right corner, they figure that the real name for southeast Ohio is "West Virginia?"

Definite pet peeve when the term "Southern Ohio" is used for the Cincinnati metro. So that means Portsmouth, Ironton and Pomeroy get lumped in together. No way. Even worse if they add Woodsfield and Marietta. Talk about an odyssey; you can almost get to Cleveland quicker

Stranger is the way that Dayton TV talks about "The Miami Valley".  There are two Miamis, plus a Miami University that isn't close to either of them (fun fact: Miami U was originally supposed to be nestled between them in Hamilton County - specifically Springfield Township - until the dude who bought that area "forgot" to disignate space for it).

And now DeWine has tested negative. Well, that’s one way to get out of attending a rally.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Golly, that's sardonic

Republican Rep. Nino Vitale was referred to the Ohio Elections Commission on Wednesday after turning in a blank campaign finance report one day after the state deadline, according to Secretary of State Frank LaRose.

“I swore an oath to uphold the law, so when I see an apparent violation of our state’s campaign finance statutes, I am duty bound to refer it to the Ohio Elections Commission.” LaRose said in a release.  “All public officials must be held accountable.”

Ohio GOP lawmaker tries and fails to charge Gov. Mike DeWine with terrorism

COLUMBUS - After failing to impeach Gov. Mike DeWine over his COVID-19 response, Clermont County Republican Rep. John Becker tried – and shortly after failed – to charge him with a slew of criminal offenses, including terrorism, bribery and interfering with civil rights.

Becker accused DeWine of disenfranchising voters, threatening the health of Ohioans by closing hospitals to non-emergency procedures and shuttering businesses in a private citizen affidavit filed with Clermont County Municipal Court on Monday morning.

Clermont County Municipal Court Clerk Tim Rudd sent the request to prosecutor Vince Faris for review, and Faris rejected it shortly after.  "I do not find any basis for the filing of a criminal complaint pursuant to this affidavit," Faris, a Republican, told The Cincinnati Enquirer.  Becker's quest ended just hours after it started.

( . . . )

Asked for comment, DeWine spokesman Dan Tierney replied: "If this were serious, I would have a comment. Because it is patently absurd, I do not."

What did he think would happen? These nuts seriously underestimate the power of Senior voters and triple down on Harley guys.

Agree or disagree wiht him, I think Dewine is doing a good job of listening and taking into account the interests of all constituencies in the State. There are certainly many things I disagree with him on but I do understand his POV and respect his decisions. He shows he is listening to everyone and does have a bit of humility that he shows too.

This is a big difference between him and Beshear in KY who seems to want to pander and stoke animoisity against those who do not agree with him.

I respect Dewine and recognize he is in a tough position.

Beshear's approval rating is around 63%, in a state that will vote for Trump by probably 20 points. Both our governors have done a good job given the lack of federal leadership and planning and both Dewine and Beshear have ignored their own parties and their opposition parties to do what they think is in their state's best interest. John Becker is an idiot and so is anyone who thinks Dewine has done a bad job, he has 75% approval rating fcs. #we'reinthistogether #ya'llcan'tbedoingthat

Beshear may have an above water approval rating now, but midway through his term, he is not going to win re-election. I am calling that one now.

DeWine has been rock solid.  I have voted for him in every election he has run in in which I was an eligible voter, and I regret precisely none of them.  I wish we had more like him on the national level.

I agree. He is a pragmatic Republican that listens to constituents, does not draw a hard line on issues and is open for compromise and other opinions. The sad thing is that Republicans dont love him because he is not hard line enough and the Dems like him only so far as they do not have a strong enough candidate to take him out.

Considering Kentucky's horrible taste in politicians, I'm not surprised Beshear's approval rating is that low.

In lieu of an Ohio GOP thread (plus, DeWine signed these):

Last week Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced that, at the request of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, he is sending Ohio National Guard troops and members of the Ohio Highway Patrol to help "protect" the border with Mexico. The 185 troops he plans to send later this year will join the 115 troops who were deployed there in 2020 and who remain on active duty. To that total he is adding "about a dozen" State Highway Patrol officers, as well. Never mind that Ohio neither shares a border with Mexico nor has any highways within a thousand miles of the place. Never mind that the state troopers will have no power to arrest anyone or do anything, really, other than stand around and get paid their salaries and expenses by Ohio taxpayers as they do it.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed legislation Monday giving county commissioners new powers to kill wind or solar projects early in their development.

No such power exists for local officials for coal mines or oil and gas wells, which are regulated at the state level.

If commissioners opt against scuttling a project entirely, Senate Bill 52 also allows them to block wind and solar developments in all or part of unincorporated areas in the county.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but no obvious alternative.

https://www.cleveland.com/open/2021/10/wrighting-a-wrong-ohio-fixes-error-in-new-state-license-plate-after-wrong-way-wright-flyer-turbulence.html

The new license plate design is horrible. I'm not really sure why a redesign was necessary. It reminds me of the equally ugly 2009 design. Lots of states have had the same or approximately the same design for decades, and I don't understand why we have to reinvent the wheel every 7-10 years. The current design is simple (if you ignore the many light grey slogans) and attractive. Such a waste to go to a busy, gaudy design like this.

^Another FarmVille plate. Lovely. And I suppose they paid big bucks to whomever designed this.

Swing and a miss!   The party of anti-science keeps up its streak!

Really spooky---is this for Halloween? Look at the photo at the link--at the left, it looks like Death himself, sans scythe, is presenting the new license plate design, with DeWine holding an actual size sample.

The new plate is an embarrassment.

The simplified license plates were the only good thing to come out of the Kasich administration.

The DeWine plates are a return to the terrible Strickland plates — both haphazardly shove together urban, rural, and aviation-themed imagery.

The funniest take comes from @5chw4r7zwho said that the bottom of the new plates look like "wheat jello":

I wouldn't suggest trying to fly a banner from the Wright Brothers plane.
