Construction season has started and I want to know what are the major big time projects going on in the Buckeye that I should look out for. When I say big projects I mean things that will become a signature part of Ohio (i.e. buildings, bridges, muesems, etc) and has started or will start this season. Post pictures if possible..

I think the RANDOM DEVELOPMENT threads above pretty much answer your question.  Granted some of the smaller cities have individual threads posted here.

if i had to say one thing then prob the new toledo bridge.

This is not about a specific project.  Therefore, I'm moving it to City Discussion.

umm...unfortunately for Ohio it's in NoKy...The Ascsent

But no pics? I still haven't seen a good pic of the project.

The new Cleveland Clinic Heart Center is absolutely massive and could become a symbol of Cleveland, and Ohio's "new economy".

The Cleveland Museum of Art expansion is also a massive project by a well known international architect, although the original portion of the museum will still be the signature element.

^I agree about the Heart Center - although I'm not a huge fan of the design, it's already an impressive structure along Euclid, and of course the implications for Cleveland's future in medicine.

As for the Art Museum, I don't think the new expansion will have a huge "wow" factor in and of itself, and I think that's okay. I might change my mind as the construction continues, but when I see the renderings, I see a really nice facility that's being enhanced (substantially) rather than something as visually jarring as say, when the Botanical Gardens added their Greenhouse. Given the museum's outstanding collection, it really doesn't need an eye-popping facility like other cities.

I don't think that the expansion in and of itself will be eye-popping, but it will turn the art museum into one large architectural "uber-statement", whereas it is currently a very nice, but small original portion with some uncoordinated, low lying wings that don't add up to anything.  Of course, considering the uninspiring architecture of the current set of wings, it is better that they fade into the background.

Or to put it another way, not only is the museum expanding, but the reconfiguration of spaces and massing should finally mean that the museum will add up to the sum of its architectual parts.  And I think that will be a very impressive whole.

It doesnt really matter to me.  Projects on both sides of the river affect the other side in many ways.  I am all for quality projects in Nky that will complement the Cincy side and vise versa.  Both sides should work together to create a cohesive riverfront development strategy that can really capitalize on the assets of both Nky and Cincy.

Agreed on that one...I haven't been by there too frequently, but the last time I was, I was taken aback at the size of it!  We need construction photos!

perhaps these will do?

Ok, actually that is pretty impressive..Cleveland Clinic is known around the country, perhaps the world for its expertise in heart surgery its only right they have a kick ass looking hospital. We need more of these futuristic looking buildings in the state.

I also agree that the biggest project in Cleveland (and Ohio) is the Heart Center at the Cleveland Clinic. It's a major construction site and this is going to be one of those structures that will stand out regardless of height.

May 2005, we see the beginning of a major project unfolding:

Well, I'd say the biggest project entirely in Ohio is The Banks in Cincinnati but God knows if that is going to start when and where.

Fountain Square rehab, CityWest Cincinnati, RiverSouth Columbus, I'm sure some Cleveland projects, ToolTown Dayton, all immediately come to mind, as far as scale.

Yes, I would say based on pure size that 'The Banks' would be the most spectacular and largest project in Ohio.  There is the first site proposal from one of the selected candidates this friday at the Freedom Center downtown at 2 pm.  I believe that this is open to the public...lets get out there and throw some of our clout (knowledge/experience) around.

As long as we're discussing projects that won't be finished until 2030, I'd add Toledo's Marina District too.

The Marina Districts going to kick ass. I didnt mention this because it hasnt broke ground yet. Although it's supposably going to break ground this year. In fact the developer has just 2 days to present the first major anchor. That should be interesting.

I'd say Toledo's Tech Corridor tops everything in the state. As much as I hate to say this, it is Toledo's last chance at an economic recovery.

Although tech is important in for Toledo's future, I wouldn't say its the last chance. Toledo has the benefit of being one of the top transportation hubs in the country. I for the life of me can't figure out why the city hasnt aggressively marketed this.I read just today the BAX Global is not only thinking about expanding here but is aggressively marketing Toledo as a place to do business to other companies in national biz mags. Im very confident Toledo can snatch up alot of transportation companies to relocate their HQ's here. Here is an interesting article about this.V

Future developments will include a passenger rail system connecting the UT and MUO campuses, a West Side research corridor, and downtown. After that's complete, UT is REALLY going big. Bowling Green has been very cooperative with UT and will be the southern anchor of the Toledo Tech Corridor. The passenger rail lines will extend to their fair city 20 miles south of Toledo, and include their college campus. But, it won't end there. The northern anchor is to be Ann Arbor, Michigan. UT, U of M, and BG will comprise one of the largest research meccas on earth, and the sense of regionalism taking hold at these universities is astounding (and Detroit won't be included). New businesses will spring up from all the new research dollars coming into the area, and hopefully it will be enough to offset Toledo's losses elsewhere.

Jeez, I didnt know it was of this magnitude, hell I just thought it was another buliding that would be built. I probably wont be around in Toledo to see this through to the end (unless I got a kick ass job in economic development here)but if this happens it would be really impressive. Toledo would be a real city. :-D

BTW UT Prez Dan Johnson will oversee the tech corridor now, not that guy in that article.

These are alot of projects, Ill google to see if I can find some renderings, although I was looking for projects that has broke ground...Tooltown!! That reminds me of "tooltime" on that show Home Improvement starring Tim Allen..

^bobo, if you are looking for renderings and other information on projects in Ohio.  Then I must recomend that you explore the UrbanOhio website.  I have been a member on here for about a half a year, and I have quickly learned that UrbanOhio often times has better information and you will hear about it earlier than from the local media.

There is information about everyone of these topics you're talking about and many of them are updated daily by forumers.  Before straining yourself to find information elsewhere try this site out; there are some very knowledgeable people on here.

Indeed.  All the projects I mentioned have their own threads here.

...but change "ToolTown" to "TechTown" in Dayton.

It used to be "ToolTown" and I still call it that (I actaully remember the old rendersing of ToolTown/TechTown and it had a giant hammer [no lie] as the "entrance").

Thanks for the info, ive learned to go through these more before I speak.

Having recently moved to Toledo, the idea of a tech corridor anchored by rather large universities (UT, BGSU, and UM) could mean some interesting things are going to be coming to T-Town.  I especially like the idea of a light rail line connecting Downtown to UT and MUO (and possilby BG in the future).  Let's hope the ball got rolling with the MUO-UT merger.

Here are a couple more links to the Corridor.
