Many, many festivities this weekend celebrating 50 years since the last fire and subsequent clean-up efforts.  However, there are still 7 areas of concern the Cuyahoga must meet to be removed from US EPA's list that we should not lose scope of such as Degradation of Fish Populations,  Fish Tumors or Other Deformities, Degradation of Benthos, etc.  I found this great list of the current status of progress made against these Beneficial Use Impairments:  http://www.cuyahogaaoc.org/the-plan-and-targets.html  [scroll a half page down for the list]

[How did we not have a thread on the Cuyahoga? There are three for the Ohio River.]

I went to the preview night of the Detroit-Superior bridge art installation and it was awesome, really looking forward to everything going on this weekend (and beyond!).

I'll post some photos/a link somewhere on here once I get on my phone haha

Wow! I'd hate to be a lake freighter captain and their tugboat assistants trying to make our way up the Cuyahoga today...

I noticed that yesterday when I was down in the Flats. I'd say it's within 2' of the top of the bulkheads, and threatening to come up over in spots.  Never seen it like this before!

Flats businesses complain Norfolk-Southern railroad bridge won’t lift on Cuyahoga River

By Laura Johnston, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Norfolk-Southern railroad bridge serves as the “Iron Curtain” of the Cuyahoga River.

Boaters have complained for years that it’s slow to lift to let cruise ships, freighters and recreational boats between the river and Lake Erie. Now, Flats businesses say the bridge is a bigger problem than ever -- because of more recreational river traffic, because the bridge’s dispatch center has moved from Michigan to Atlanta, because water levels are at record highs.

Good news for boaters, although I hope the default is down at night - Amtrak has enough trouble w delays already.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Boaters, rejoice! Norfolk Southern has pledged to keep its railroad bridge over the mouth of the Cuyahoga River in the up position, allowing cruise ships, freighters, pleasure craft and more to cross more freely to Lake Erie -- at least on the weekend.

The video of the Tiki Barge crashing into the (parked) Nautical Queen is worth watching. They hit it pretty good - quite a few Tiki passengers fell over.

Wow.  Hopefully no injuries.  Why did it happen?

2 more problem areas should be removed by 2026 once the Gorge Dam is removed. The other 3 are expected to be resolved by 2030 as Cliffs has joined the advisory board bringing more resources and attention to the rehabilitation efforts.

The Cuyahoga River has reduced its problem areas from 10 to 5. What was the latest to go?

Published: Nov. 15, 2023

By Peter Krouse, cleveland.com

In August, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency determined that the incidents of fish with deformities, eroded fins, lesions and tumors had improved to where they were no more frequent in the river than in Lake Erie.

...

A number of waterways around the Great Lakes are designated as areas of concern in accordance with the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. The Black and Maumee rivers in Ohio are labeled as such, while the Ashtabula River had been until improvements enabled it to be delisted in 2021.

The Cuyahoga area of concern includes 46.5 miles of the river from the Gorge Dam near Akron to Lake Erie, as well as watersheds that feed the river and nearshore Lake Erie from Edgewater Park to Euclid.

great article, thanks for sharing. sounds like hard work they're doing and it's greatly appreciated. I've been walking to towpath a lot and it's really fun seeing activity on the river. I have to be honest, I'm surprised there aren't restrictions on fish consumption. I always cringe a bit when I see people fishing the river not far past the (walworth run?) sewer outflow.

In a sign of progress made in restoring the Cuyahoga River ODNR plans to expand is steelhead trout release to the Cuyahoga river.

Steelhead trout a plan for Cuyahoga River: NE Ohio fishing report

Published: Feb. 23, 2024

By D'Arcy Egan | special to cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Ohio Division of Wildlife has been working with stakeholders as it examines shifting some of its steelhead trout stockings this spring to the Cuyahoga River. With the river’s reclamation in full swing, fishermen have been anxious to have a new steelhead trout river to explore.

Steelhead trout are already being released in the Rocky and Chagrin rivers in the Cleveland area, as well as the Vermilion, Grand and Ashtabula rivers and Conneaut Creek. The Castalia State Fish Hatchery has reached its annual capacity of raising about 450,000 steelhead trout each year to release as yearlings in the spring, so the other rivers will have to share in order to have spring releases in the Cuyahoga River.

EPA to host public meeting on efforts to remove contaminated sediment in Cuyahoga River Old Channel

Ideastream Public Media | By Zaria Johnson

Published May 15, 2024

A public meeting in Cleveland Wednesday evening will provide residents with an update on cleanup efforts soon to be underway in the Cuyahoga River Old Channel.

The project, led by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, aims to remove 100,000 cubic yards of sediment in the Old Channel — which diverges from the main river just before it empties into the lake — contaminated with oil, grease, metals and toxic chemicals like PCBs.

...

The project to clean up the contamination will kick off in 2025, Denis said. The sediment will be removed from the channel and transferred to the storage facility during phase two. Phase three will be focused on removing contaminated sediment from the shoreline and capping contaminated areas where removing the sediment would create structural concerns.

Apologies for the formatting, I'm not sure why it's striking through the quoted sections from the story. But as the water quality of the Cuyahoga River continues to recover we are seeing more species reintroduced. Reestablishing lake sturgeon in the Cleveland area will be great for fishers. And I would imagine the population only strengthens after the Gorge Dam comes down.

Even if this means stocking for a few years ODNR has a pretty robust fish hatchery program in place.

Signal-sending sturgeon will help identify stocking locations on the Cuyahoga River

Published: Oct. 02, 2024

State and federal agencies placed 60 juvenile sturgeon in the river on Wednesday at three spots between the Gorge Dam in Akron and Lake Erie.

...

The project is part of a broader effort to return healthy populations of sturgeon to Lake Erie, where the fish once spawned in 19 of its tributaries, before overharvesting - it's eggs are sold as caviar - and loss of habitat decimated their numbers.

Today, sturgeon in Lake Erie spawn in only two tributaries, the Detroit River at the west end of the lake and the upper Niagara River at the east end near Buffalo.
