I wonder how many people in Worthington or Bexley know that Graeters is a "Cincinnati thing". I'm guessing only a few. Skyline Chili (although I do LOVE skyline to death) I don't think it has the universal appeal of Donatos, Wendys, etc.

Wendy's and Donatos are universal, but is there such a thing as Columbus Burgers or Columbus Pizza? They're chains that happen to be based out of Columbus that could well be based anywhere, but Cincinnati chili is akin to New York pizza or Carolina barbecue.

Dayton wants to be Cincinnati. Cincinnati wishes it were in Kentucky.

Dayton wants to be Cincinnati. Cincinnati wishes it were in Kentucky.

What the HELL?

Oh, and might I add that New York style pizza can be found at your local mall in the form of Sbarros. Columbus has way more independent pizza places than Cincinnati could ever hope to have and Columbus is very well known for thin crust, greasy @ss pizza cut into small squares. As distinctive as skyline chili is, it hasn't spread like wild fire other than a few locations in places like (I think) Michigan and Florida. The company has been around for like 60 years, you would think that would be plenty of time.

Dayton does NOT want to be Cincinnati.  That is just silly.  I'd might as well say "Cincinnati wants to be New York with all the NY style pizza places."

Just a little joke, and not a culinary one, btw. Don't shoot me. You're missing my point and I'm not trying to be disrespectful.

Regardless of how many independent pizza places are in Columbus or Cincinnati or Walla Walla, I have never heard anyone refer to it as Columbus Pizza. Regardless of how widespread it is or isn't, Barberton Chicken is still Barberton Chicken. Yes, ColDayMan, I know you like some of the local Dayton places better. So do I. But no matter how good Chicken Louie's is, Dayton is not identified with its chicken.

Detroit is home to Little Caesar's. And Domino's is not too far down the road. But when people around Detroit think of the pizza most identifiable with the area, it's the thick square cut of Buddy's or Shield's or PizzaPappalis. Having a chain does not a city identifier make. I think that's the point UncleRando was making. I agree with him.

Well then, I suppose most cities don't have "city identifiers" if we're going by national standards.  I mean, really, how many people in Boston or Fresno have heard of Cincinnati-style chili outside of maybe a friend from Cincinnati either complaining/complimenting the city on this unusual speghetti?  Or how many people in Columbus or Cincinnati have heard of San Diego being famous for the fish taco?

I mean, local identity is self-explainatory but it doesn't diminish the fact that these cities (Dayton, Barberton, Columbus, Cincinnati) DO have their local quirky cuisines (Rochester, NY's "garbage plate" for example) and should be celebrated for that (or at least sold to whoever wants some good ole' fashion Buddy's!).

PizzaPappalis.

I LOVE that place! I went to the one in Greektown. Probably the best pizza I've ever had!

That gets my vote for best in the Detroit area. Unfortunately, the one near where I grew up in the suburbs closed recently. For some reason some of the other PizzaPappalis satellites took in one Rio Wraps, a quick burrito place. It went downhill from there.

Going back to chicken, ColDayMan, have you had a chance to try Carolina Chicken on East Third? It replaced Chicken Louie's there but I haven't had a chance to try it.

No I haven't, but that's a good idea!

Is that the one by Yankee? It seems like they're revamping a lot of McDonald's. Every time I see a building like that getting built, I wonder if it's Jack in the Box coming back. I saw a Jack and the Box truck by the Dayton Mall several months ago.

I guess you have to be a friend of Ann Heller and know all the ins and outs of L'Auberge to appreciate it. Everyone I know who's been there say it's underwhelming for the prices you pay.

Grub Steak maintains spot among top steakhouses

The Grub Steak dates back to 1963 and established itself as one of the best-known Dayton steakhouses. But last April, the owners moved Grub Steak to a shopping center in West Carrollton. Here’s what I found:

Parking: The restaurant is part of a shopping center, but I had no problems.

Service: The restaurant is big on the team concept as different staffers brought various items. Beyond that, our primary server was helpful and prompt.

Atmosphere: The Grub Steak location leaves much to be desired. The space is essentially a big box and featured rows of booths, which reminded me of rows of office cubicles. As for decor, it was the holiday season and the place was adorned with festive place mats, wreaths and figurines.

Fricker’s inks Miller Lane lease

A formerly vacant restaurant on Miller Lane will soon be home to one of Dayton’s most popular chicken wing restaurants.

Fricker’s USA has signed a 10-year lease for the former Joe’s Crab Shack location on Miller Lane.

The Dayton-based wing-and-beer joint will spend around $500,000 to remodel the 6,000-square-foot restaurant.

Paul Curtis, director of franchising and human resources for Fricker’s, said he expects the new Fricker’s to be open March 17, just in time for March Madness.

Some ups and downs on first trip to new bistro

On a recent snowy afternoon, I trudged forth to Amelia’s Bistro, a newcomer to the restaurant scene. I’d heard promising things about the restaurant, situated in downtown Bellbrook. Here’s what I found:

Parking: Situated in a shopping center, parking was plentiful.

Service: The waiter was attentive and friendly, but the overall customer service wound up disappointing.

Atmosphere: The place is sharp, but also sort of homey. The restaurant features two dining areas with a bar in the middle. Lots of tan and black colors, cool lighting and large open windows create a nice ambience.

Sonic plans 14th area location

A former car lot in Huber Heights will be home to the 14th Sonic restaurant in the Dayton region.

The drive-up burger-and-milk-shake joint is going in at 7888 Brandt Pike. The Huber Heights location will cost more than $1.2 million to build and is scheduled to open in August. There are currently 12 Sonic locations in the area, but a Kettering location is scheduled to open prior to the Huber Heights site.

Good food makes Jimmy’s Italian a place to visit

I’m usually skeptical of restaurant sites that rotate operators in and out. I’m not sure why, but a little alarm bell usually sounds, signaling that I should approach with caution. This is true of a property at the corner of Dorothy Lane and Woodman Drive in Kettering, which has been a temporary stopping house for several restaurants in the past few years. The newest inhabitant is a place called Jimmy’s Italian Kitchen. Here’s what I found:

I enjoyed what I have had at Jimmy's. The pizza reminded me of another good local place, Corleone's on Patterson and Smithville.

It looks like not only Domenic's but their neighbor, Duke's Golden Ox, are coming back in a joint effort.

Yes!!!!!!

It will be nice to have them back.

Only thing that's bugging me though.....

Why didn't they choose to relocate back by UD in the big, new, fairly vacant building on Brown Street just north of Stewart? Oh well.

Prolly just following the $$$ southward.

A worthy replacement has to be dark and dusky inside - 1950s lounge like - with multiple levels.

Yes!!!!!!

They may not have had a choice. UD and MVH bought up all that land, that's part of the reason the two places left in the first place. Same with a lot of downtown places, road expansion or land expansion forced the hand of places that had been there forever. Like Michael's Chili Bowl and maybe even Chicken Louie's just North of Downtown.

After all the hassle, perhaps they didn't want to have to deal with staying in Dayton.

Smashburger cooking up second Dayton-area Location

Friday, August 21, 2009, 12:02pm EDT

The Dayton-area Smashburger franchisee is looking to open a second area location near the University of Dayton in University Place before the end of the year.

E-mail [email protected]. Call (937) 528-4427.

Craig Hatfield, owner of Pi Pizzeria, said the concept he and his business partner — Johnny’s Pizzeria owner Johnny Riveria — are bringing to Brown Street is unique to the neighborhood.

Johnny's Pizza in Centerville (used to be named Roc-A-Fellas, same owner, I think) is an OK pizza but is not really "NY style". The crust is way too thick and doesn't have the sear that you'd associate with an east coast pie. IE, this is not going to be a clone of Flying Pizza if the methods of "construction" are the same as Johnny's Pizza. However, it's a better product than almost any chain pizza.

Shhhnanigan's-Dayton

I know there used to be a bar in Dayton called Shhhnanigan's but apparently they are closed now. I know there is a Shhhnanigan's II in Fairborn.

I spoke with someone the other day and she told me there used to be 2 in Dayton but both are closed and one was torn down. She said that there was one on Main St near Miami Valley Hospital but I haven't seen it as I am in that area quite often so - my guess is- that is the one they tore down.

I just remember seeing one with a mural of NASCAR driver's on it and cars. They were done in charicachure (sp?). I want to take a picture of it if it's still there.

Please if anyone knows where this is I'd appreciate if you can help me find it. Thanks

  • 2 weeks later...

That was Shhhhnanigan's? I remember driving by that place, it was closer to the Patterson split than MVH.

The mural sounds like something Walnut Hills on Brown and Wyoming would have had. I thought they had a big mural in the room with the pool tables but that was years ago. The location is now The Cornerstone.

Fast-casual burger joints begin Dayton invasion

Dayton Business Journal - by Caleb Stephens

It was only a matter of time, really. With fast-casual restaurants — such as Panera Bread and Chipotle Mexican Grill— spawning like fruit flies, I knew a slew of fast-casual hamburger places sat right around the corner. After all, Americans love their burgers and the fast-casual concept, offering higher quality meals than their fast-food counterparts, seemed tailor made for burger places. And sure enough, they’ve begun arriving. Last month, two burger chains, Smashburger and Five Guys Burger and Fries, both opened near the Dayton Mall on state Route 725.
