Dayton restaurants set New Year’s feasts

Don’t know where to go for New Year’s Eve? Dayton-area restaurants are trying to corral local revelers with a host of New Year’s parties.

(Click here for arts and other events for New Year's Eve.)

Here are just a few of the many offerings around town:

• El Meson restaurant in West Carrollton is rolling out its New Years Eve 2011. The South American/Spanish restaurant has two New year’s Eve events, an early dinner and the late night party. The early event, for arrivals from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. features a buffet, dessert and a flute of sparkling wine for $29.

The “Big Party” for those arriving from 8:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., costs $75 and includes tapas, a Cuban-themed buffet, desert, wine and salsa dancing. For more information, visit El Meson's Web site.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

The former Wympee at Third & Wayne is being turned into "Olive, An Urban Dive".  Apparently the city is giving them a hard time about that "Wympee" signage,  that they need to have taken it down, or get a variance to keep it.

There some discussion of this at the "Olive" Facebook page and at the Esrati blog.

Interesting.

Back in the 1990s there was a wave of indie coffee shops in Dayton city, starting with Front Street.  These faded and all that was left was Boston Stoker, the Pacchia coffee shop (now Sidebar), and Seattle East (now Ohio Coffee), and North River (not sure if its still open).

Seems like indie coffee culture is returing to Dayton.  Two more are going to opening soon:

Press (on Wayne, but maybe a gallery as much as a coffee shop?

Ghostlight, also on Wayne, but in South Park.

That's always a good thing.

New Asian restaurant opens near Dayton Mall, another on the way near UD

A new restaurant called Pho Mi Vietnamese Restaurant has opened at 8990 Kingsridge Drive in Miami Twp. near the Dayton Mall, and a Chinese eatery to be called North Village Chinese Restaurant is coming soon to the Brown Street/University of Dayton area.

Pho Mi is located behind the McDonald’s on the corner of Springboro Pike (Ohio 741) in Kingsridge, in a building that formerly housed the India Palace restaurant. Pho Mi is owned by Tho Pham and Mui Pham of Xenia and operated by their son Phu Pham and his wife Ling Pham, also of Xenia.

The old Wympee at the corner of Wayne and Third is being turned into a "localvore" restaurant:

Heres the Facebook page:

Olive, an Urban Dive

"our motto: local over import, labor over convenience and service over everything else. we chase chickens, when we say free range, we mean it."

More on Press from the DDN food blog:

New Coffee Shop Coming to Oregon

The venture is owned by the husband-and-wife team of Brett and Janell Barker of Dayton. Brett Barker has been in the business for six years and managed the coffee shop at the former Pacchia. He said it was time for the couple to launch their own shop.

“I think we have the passion, the knowledge and the drive to create something special,” Barker said.

I think the wife is also an artist/printmaker who was in a show at the Cannery earlier in the year.  Good sign that they have experience in the biz.

It seems Wayne is starting, in a small way, to turn into corridor of interest since there is Olive, Garden Station (garden/art space), Press, Dublin Pub, Cocos (for now), the Theatre Guild, Ghostlight, and South Park Tavern in the stretch btween Third and Wyoming.

Yeah, that looks like the new "it" street, which is a great thing.  Now hopefully they can infill some of those parking lots and connect it urban-wise with Fifth.

On the west side, a 'soul food to health food' restaurant is going to open on Germantown Street @ Adelite Avenue:

Diamond D's Diner

Diamond D’s Diner will serve chicken, fish, soups, salads, vegetables and other items that Vinzant described as “soul food to health food.”

Cousin Vinny's eyes 10 new pizzerias

If there's one thing I've observed since I moved to Dayton last month, it's that people in this region love their pizza.  And why not? The area has an abundance of locally-owned and operated restaurants and chains that offer tastes for every palate while still keeping dollars local.

that and Asian restaurants.  There still are a ton of these in the area, just little mom and pop things.  Mostly Chinese, but also a few Vietnamese, Thai, Korean, and Indian. This is actually a good town for that kind of food, the cheaper street food versions.

Pizza?  My fave local is still Rons.  Rons had expanded after  I moved here...and I 'expanded' with them...I was a regular customer of their Centerville delivery operation.

Saddly, now they are back just one store in downtown Miamisburg.  Still one of my favorites, becuase they have a fairly thin crust, like 'neighborhood pizza" in Chicago (not that deep dish that is popularly known as "Chicago style").  A lot of locals have crusts that are too doughy for my taste.  Rons is just right.

Press, that new coffee house, has receieved a good review in City Paper

Pressing the Boundaries

>snip<

“We are providing the best coffee that we feel you can get in this area,” says Brett Barker. “The equipment is pretty close to the top of the line. It’s a clean space and you recognize the people making your coffee."....Barker also hopes Press will encourage people think about what they consume...His goal is for his customers to understand where their coffee came from and how it was prepared.

>snip<

I was there twice already.  Once for their "soft opening" on Friday, the second by accident, on my way to a show at the DubPub (they were semi-open, but made me a cup anyway).

They do make some good coffee, just based on these two visits.

I am a regular at various Lousiville coffee shops since I am down there so often, and also at a few in Cincy, and it was as good (or better) as some of the best @ Lou and Cincy coffee places.

I'd love to see what percentage of Cousin Vinny's sales come from UD students. They command almost 100% of the latenight pizza delivery at UD.

A friend of mine from suburban Chicago says that Dayton has many more pizza options than Chicago.

The Submarine House dates back to the days of the Nixon administration. But the restaurant has evolved in recent years with a bar and grill format at its new locations. Here's what I found:

L’Auberge owner fights for restaurant’s future

WEB-111306LAuberge*280.jpg?v=1

L'Auberge, one of the area's most-acclaimed restaurants, remains on shaky ground as owner Josef Reif struggles to cover the restaurant’s debt. L'Auberge, a French fine dining restaurant in Kettering, is slated to be sold at sheriff's sale on Aug. 26, after a Montgomery County Court of Commons Please judge ruled the property and restaurant owners, Reif and The Inn Inc., owed $1.5 million to Lebanon Citizens National Bank .

Judge Michael Tucker on May 5 ruled in favor of LCNB, which claimed L'Auberge's owners as of January 2011 had defaulted on three separate mortgage loans — a $1.4 million loan, a $118,000 loan and a $35,000 loan.

Kettering family restaurant to open

A family-friendly restaurant is opening its doors on Lincoln Park Boulevard near the Fraze Pavilion. On Oct. 12, Pavilion Grille will open in the site of Norton’s Grille, a sports bar that relocated to 580 Lincoln Park Boulevard after operating for more than 20 years on Wilmington Pike.

Pavilion Grille will be operated by the current owners of Norton’s Grille, Christina Koogler and Fred McGhee, who plan to close the sports bar in favor of the newly imagined restaurant concept. Koogler, who bought into the restaurant in June, spearheaded efforts to turn the 7,200-square-foot sports bar into a restaurant. Norton’s Grille will close Monday, Oct. 10. The restaurant will reopen two days later as Pavilion Grille.
