July 6, 201212 yr Louisiana Grill brings taste of bayou to Dayton http://www.daytonmostmetro.com/ No one is going to mistake the Dayton region for the bayou, although the recent heat wave may cause some to debate that. On the food front, the area does have a few Cajun restaurants — although it recently lost one with the closing of Crocodile Louie’s in Kettering. But the operators of Louisiana Grill, Home of Bourbon Chicken have been hitting the festival circuit for years with their Cajun offerings. Last fall, they opened a permanent restaurant location in the former Meadowlark space near the Dayton Mall. July 25, 201212 yr They go all out on ambience..... ...the former Meadowlark, which had a rotating gallery of large paintings on those now-bare walls. The restaurant will open in a temporary space in the tower on Monday while renovating the former Rutledge Gallery space in the main lobby. ..good to hear, since it wont be burried in that old "King Cole/Olivias" space. unfortunatly one of those restaurants that is only open during the week on business hours...same with Ohio Coffee. Ohio Coffee could have been one of the cool spots downtown, as it had a sort of funky somewhat bohemian atmosphere (& they did host occasional after-hours things generated by the local boho set). It will be interesting to see how they "fit in" to the lobby of a skyscraper, in a space that has zero street visibility (in contrast to their old location).
July 25, 201212 yr That Oakwood deli sounds interesting...with the upstairs deck seating. And the coffee shop in Kettering...interesting....trying to place the location??? (BTW, ColDayMan, thx for the intel on the food scene here...giving me some ideas for my monthly "dinner with friends" socializing).

July 26, 201212 yr Who here really likes Hot Head? I've eaten there a few times (the one in Centerville.) Tasteless food and mushy nachos. I mean, great that it's Dayton based and all, but IMO it's a culinary fail...

July 29, 201212 yr Sidebar in the Oregon District has not been paying it's employees for months. I have several friends who worked their until recently, and for months have bounced paychecks from the restaurant. A total shame because it was a great restaurant, great food and excellent service. The owner Brian Higgins, however, is a total crook in my opinion. He's also accusing a good friend of mine of stealing thousands of dollars, while he is the one not paying employees consistently. This has been stewing for months behind closed doors. August 2, 201212 yr Dayton restaurants named among tops in nation Two Dayton-based restaurants have once again earned distinction in the fast-casual restaurant industry. Kettering-based Hot Head Burritos and Dayton-based OinkADoodle Moo landed on Fast Casual 2012 Top 100 Movers & Shakers list. August 5, 201212 yr Oinkadoodlemoo seems like a neat concept. I thought Cold Beer and Cheeseburgers could have been good as a national or regional thing too, but they didnt expand. My impression of Oinkadoodlemoo is that it's a cut-down City BBQ. They don't have beer, they didn't have table sauces when I was there last summer (you have to ask at the counter), the value for what you get is (IMO) much less than what City BBQ offers, and the variety of meats and sides are both less than City. Their food that matches City BBQ is comparable in quality and flavor, which is why I compare the two. I just enjoyed the experience of eating at City BBQ much more than Oinka... Oinkadoodlemoo is too antiseptic to be accepted widely as a legit BBQ place. I think Oinka has a long way to go to expand regionally and stay stable. They're too expensive and selections are too limited. I have always enjoyed the branding on Cold Beer and Cheeseburgers' logo - very "R. Crumb" in style with the hamburger and beer bottle characters. Went there a while back and it seemed like just another boring Fricker's type fried food and beer place.

September 27, 201212 yr If Springfielders would open their own dang stores and restaurants, they might be able to build some wealth. As it is, the mall & that N Bechtle strip are just siphoning money right out of town.
September 27, 201212 yr TGIFriday's has always meant exactly three things to me: hot, greasy sandwiches, hot, greasy potato skins, and hot, greasy french fries. Now you can get almost all of that at Penn Station. :)
September 27, 201212 yr Oh no...Fridays is nostalgia for me! TGIF opened in Louisville back in 1977 or 1978, somewhere around then....and it was one of those new hip yuppie places..back then they had their menus on real school copybooks. The place has deteriorated over the years, but that early TGIFridays experience was good...interesting food in a fun environment. If Springfielders would open their own dang stores and restaurants, they might be able to build some wealth. Im wondering if Yellow Springs draws a lot of potential trade? Is there even a coffee house in Springfield?
September 27, 201212 yr TGIF's at the Dayton Mall had that hopping singles hookup joint image back in the late 70s. For years Friday's has been just another casual dining brand like Chili's.
