New cafe-bar coming to Fire Blocks District in downtown Dayton

A new establishment that will serve as a cafe by day and a bar by night is making its way to downtown Dayton.

The Little Gem Social Club is slated to open at 132 E. Third St. in the Fire Blocks District. Owner Robert Myers, a California man who grew up in the Dayton region, recently signed a lease for the new cafe-bar and is currently working on the design phase of the project. He's not sure when it will open, as the spread of the coronavirus has thrown business development efforts into somewhat of a tailspin, but he said he is excited to share the news.

"I was supposed to fly out a day after they locked us down in California," Myers told me in an exclusive interview. "I still have some stuff to wrap up in California and coronavirus obviously disrupted everyone's plans, but I'm excited to finally move forward with this."

Taco restaurant sets opening date for first Dayton-area location

image.php?type=thumbnail_1024x576&url=1x

A Columbus-based restaurant chain that describes itself as "weird yet wonderful" has set an opening date for its first Dayton-area location.

Condado Tacos, a build-your-own tacos and tequila joint that has been expanding rapidly across Ohio and the Midwest, will open in July at 4482 Glengarry Drive, which is located at The Greene Town Center in Beavercreek. The restaurant's interior will be decorated with street art from local artists, depicting some of the inventions that have come out of Dayton.

When it opens, the menu will feature a variety of tacos, including six new additions that are being rolled out. Menu items also include Condado specialities such as guacamole, tequila and margaritas, as well as a $10 "Bud Box" that features two tacos, a half-sized traditional guacamole or queso blanco, and chips.

Would have preferred this in a more walkable area like downtown Miamisburg or something, but it's nice to see Basil's doing good enough to open another local location.

New restaurants filling the void left by closures of longstanding establishments in Moraine

chiapas*750xx3648-2049-0-375.jpg

The city of Moraine lost a pair of longstanding restaurant-bars in recent years, but other concepts are taking their place.

Chappys Tap Room and Grille closed its West Alex-Bell Road location permanently in 2018 after its owners decided to consolidate operations at another location, Chappys Social House, in Washington Township. Less than a year later, another well-known establishment in the city, Upper Deck Tavern, closed its doors.

Upper Deck, located on Blanchard Avenue, was a hot spot for workers at the General Motors plant before it shut down, while Chappys was an early leader in the region's craft beer scene. Though the Upper Deck building is still closed, it has a new owner who is turning the facility into a restaurant. Additionally, Chappys former space is now home to a local Mexican restaurant.

Chiapas Mexican Grill opened in Moraine just a couple weeks before the Covid-19 pandemic set it. It is just the second location for the local establishment, which opened its first restaurant in Centerville.

Pop-Up Patio Program enables Dayton businesses to expand outdoor dining

fullsizeoutput1734*750xx4032-2265-0-173.

The city of Dayton is launching a pilot program to help first-floor businesses expand outdoor seating areas, and a group of local organizations have partnered to offer their assistance.

The Downtown Dayton Partnership is helping downtown businesses interested in participating in the Pop-Up Patio Program, which is in direct response to public health directives that cut indoor seating capacity by as much as half.

These measures were put in place to reduce the spread of Covid-19. In many cases, expanding the availability of outdoor dining could be a way for businesses to accommodate more patrons, in addition to measures taken to expand carryout and online ordering.

With the help of Miller-Valentine Group, Dayton Arcade developer Cross Street Partners and Requarth Lumber, the DDP and a group of volunteers spent Monday morning building pop-up patio starter kits. The group was able to build 75 kits in about two hours.

From gator bites to catfish nuggets, this restaurateur is bringing southern flavor to local mall

A restaurateur who spent his formative years in Piqua has returned to the city with a new establishment specializing in southern cuisine.

Tommy McCoy, owner of local catering business McCoy's Comfort Foods as well as two restaurants in Florida, recently opened Hannah's Southern Bistro in the Miami Valley Centre Mall in Piqua. The new restaurant, named after McCoy's daughter, is described as a spin on southern cuisine, fusing foods that are commonly found in states such as Texas, Louisiana and Florida. It will employ between 10 and 15 people once fully staffed.

Hannah's soft opening on July 1 and grand opening on July 8 were a rousing success, according to McCoy.

"At our soft opening we had over 400 people, and our grand opening had over 825 people come out," McCoy said. "Our first customer at the soft opening was the mayor, so we appreciated his support and the city's support. It's exciting."

The development will create new jobs, backfill a vacant building and add to the city's growing restaurant/retail scene.

"Our development team has been crushing it and we're not done yet," Gore stated. "Welcome to Huber Heights Spectrum and Five Guys ... we're glad to have you."

Fifth Street to shut down for drinking, entertainment on weekends

Fifth Street in the Oregon District will shut down to vehicular traffic on the weekends in September and October to give people more room to space out as they dine, stroll around, hang out and get to drink alcohol outside.

The Oregon District business corridor will become Dayton’s first Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA), where people are allowed to consume alcohol on the streets that are purchased at participating businesses.

New pedestrian walkway to expand outdoor dining in Oregon District

A new program to support one of downtown Dayton's premier entertainment districts will launch next month.

Called "Out on 5th," the program was created by the Oregon District Business Association and local partners will expand outdoor seating and offer more opportunities for social distancing in the age of Covid-19.

Beginning Sept. 4, Fifth Street in the Oregon District will close to vehicular traffic between Patterson Boulevard and Wayne Avenue. Out on 5th will continue each weekend through the end of October as part of a pilot phase. The pedestrian promenade will begin around 5 p.m. Fridays and continue through 10 p.m. Sundays.

...

Along with street closures, the Oregon District will be able to safely enact the new Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA), which allows patrons to purchase an alcoholic beverage served in a branded cup and relax outdoors in the pedestrian mall.

Guests can choose to dine at their favorite Fifth Street businesses and receive table service at specially marked tables, or enjoy a beverage in the DORA cup at one of the public tables offered throughout the street. Guests must finish their DORA beverage and dispose of the cup before entering a new pub or restaurant, or they can sip while they shop at participating retail businesses that allow DORA cups.
