We ate at Hothead in Centerville a couple of months ago. Never again. Service is OK but the food we got was mediocre. A plate of nachos was just gross - we ate it in the store and it got soft and disgusting in about 5 minutes, and the tacos were forgettable (I think they used Sysco type precooked chicken in the chicken taco).

Normally I want to patronize local businesses but Moe's or Chipotle or just about any real Mexican place is better. Even Taco Bell would have been better than the slop we got.

Pacchia not reopening as planned

One of Dayton’s premiere restaurants will not reopen as originally planned. Pacchia, located in the Oregon District, closed Jan. 1 and will not reopen because of a disagreement between Pacchia’s owners, Stephen Ramsey and Carla Carnahan, and building owner Dr. Michael Ervin, on a new concept for the restaurant and coffee shop.

Ramsey and Carnahan announced in September they would close Pacchia on the first of the year and reopen in mid-February with a new name and casual, tavern-style concept. The change would have required extensive building renovations, which Ervin did not approve. Ervin has owned the building, located at 410 E. Fifth St., since 2008.

From the DDN.

DDN Taste Blog

Pacchia will not reopen in February as previously announced, and the building’s owner is searching for new tenants for the building at 410 E. Fifth St., Kristin Wicker, coordinator of the Oregon Arts District, announced this morning, Jan. 5...

...the Pacchia owners were not able to reach agreement with the building’s owner, Dr. Michael Ervin, on the new concept or on the renovations that would have been necessary, Wicker said.

DDN sports columnist Tom Archdeacon homes in on the perhaps more serious collateral damage...the coffee shop associated with the restaurant is also closed....this coffee shop was a key part of the local social ecology of Dayton city:

A place a lot of folks are going to miss

Politicians, businessmen and women, young artists and musicians, poets, pretenders, folks who live and work in the area, students, Oregon District visitors and the occasional downtown eccentric all gathered there every day — sometimes sitting together in the most unexpected mix — to talk, gripe, gossip, laugh, share ideas and sometimes debate....

...And the young people who worked there — themselves artists, musicians, writers, a new mom, a couple other folks with kids, an interesting lot themselves...

More at the link.  This is what was called, I think, a "third place".  A comfortable place and also a source of info since they had business cards, postcards flyers, posters, etc.  Yes I know one can get this online but its nice to see it in meatspace, too. One could pick up the city paper or active Dayton and stroll down the street looking at the gig posters in bar windows, too.  It was the start of a visit to the 'district.

The Paccia coffee shop also had something nothing else downtown had, and that was good hours.  It was open on Sundays and Saturdays and after business hours.  There is no coffee shop downtown or in the Oregon that has this (in fact there is no coffee shop at all in the Oregon now that Pacchias is closed).  You could stop there on a Sunday afternoon and get something to drink and eat as a pit stop.

I have been to this coffeeshop innumerable times.  And the connection to UO is that nearly every Dayton city pix thread you saw on this board starting in 2005 to last year from me involved me stopping at Paccia for a latte, capuccinio, etc, after walking in the city doing snapshots,  and then scrolling through the pix and going over my field notes while sipping the drink and eating a scone or some other sweet.

Evrey time I was at the downtown library researching some stuff and then making a bunch of xeroxes involved me stopping at Paccia on my way home and going over the xeroxes and organizing them, picking out what I was going to scan, and doing a rough outline of how I might post something.

So most of the Dayton stuff you saw from me since 2004/2005 involved a visit to Paccia, was partly composed at Paccia  I was there probably more than I've been to McDonalds.

So this is sort of a milestone at a personal level, the ending of an era here in Dayton, for me.

I saw that and it was really disappointing. My friend works there; he's in a bad spot right now. Zero notice for a lay off? I read that it was the "savior" of downtown/Oregon Dr. Irvin who booted Paccia for a new tenant in what is his building since 2008. He was talking about an urban renaissance. WTF? By kicking out a seemingly bustling coffee shop? As always with Dayton, these deal are done behind closed doors and everyone else is left out in the cold. 3 businesses in the Oregon have closed recently. Gem City Records, Jazzy Java and now Paccia. Backsliding? I've heard Gem City and Paccia already have new tenants lined up though. If they put a Starbucks down there I'm going to be so pissed. I doubt that since Paccia had a liquor license, which is very valuable down there.

The only bright spot is that it might benefit Ohio Coffee Company on 5th and Ludlow.

Ohio Coffee is one of those "downtown buisness hours" places.  On paper downtown Dayton has a lot of places, but they are not open on weekends and open to only around 3 PM on weekdays, so useless to anyone who doesnt work or live downtown.

Yeah, it is a bummer.  Paccia itself was going  to be converted into more of bar, which is why Irvin pulled the plug.  The coffeeshop was collateral damage.  I am waiting to see if the "talk" really leads to something.  Or if the replacement is going to be as good or popular as the coffee shop (or as open for business, not like those galleries that are often closed)

True about Ohio Coffee. I hope they can take advantage of this and build their clientele. I like the lunches and the coffee there. The Captian Picard, an Earl Grey tea Steamer, is good.

I heard this closing was not all Dr. Irvin's doing. A big part of it was the owners of Paccia couldn't make the restaurant profitable, while the coffee shop was doing well. They wanted to put in something akin to a sports bar, which Dr. I didn't want, so he pulled the plug. It would suck to a have a ripoff BW3s in that space, but doesn't make it any easier for the employees that were laid off. And all the information I've gotten is 3rd hand, so we might be playing the telephone game here.

Well THAT was fast!

Former Pacchia coffee shop reopens Monday; new restaurant coming soon

The coffee shop in the former Pacchia at 410 E. Fifth St. will reopen Monday, Jan. 11, and a new restaurant will follow in the coming months, Oregon Arts District officials and the coffee shop’s new owner announced today, Jan. 9. Brian Higgins, owner of Sidebar cocktail lounge and wine bar at 130 W. Second St. in downtown Dayton, is the owner of the new venture, and will eventually move Sidebar to the former Pacchia location in the Oregon District, according to an arts district news release. Customers will help choose a name for the new coffee shop, Higgins and arts district officials said.

Coffee shop opens in Oregon District

A new coffee shop opened Monday morning in the Oregon District, and its owner plans to relocate his downtown bar and restaurant to the same location, which previously housed Pacchia restaurant. Brian Higgins, the owner of the as-of-yet unnamed coffee shop at 410 E. Fifth St. and Sidebar, plans to eventually relocate from 130 W. Second St. to the restaurant and bar area next to the coffee shop. The expansion will allow him to increase his staff from six employees to approximately 30. A timeline for relocation has not been determined.

“The location is a perfect location,” Haber said. “There is no broaster chicken in the area there.”

Quiznos closing downtown, Main Stoppe moving

Last year all of its office tenants were told they had to find new space, now the remaining retail tenants in the former Key Bank Building in downtown Dayton have to leave.

Sheri Simpson, property manager with Gem Real Estate and manager of the building at 32 N. Main St., said the owners wanted to keep the two retail tenants — Quiznos and The Main Stoppe — open, but the cost to provide heating and air conditioning to the space was too much. Both retailers will close Friday and move out this weekend, Simpson said.

EO Burgers makes case for top burger in Dayton

The burger invasion remains in full sizzle around the Dayton market. National burger purveyors Smashburger and Five Guys Burgers and Fries are opening multiple Dayton-area locations. The latest restaurant to jockey for burger supremacy is EO Burgers, a higher-end burger concept in The Greene that opened in March.

Atmosphere: EO Burgers occupies a prime corner space in the lifestyle center, across from the multiplex. The interior is significant with a 15-seat bar and table seating for nearly 150 people. The nicest part of EO’s interior is its large ceiling-to-floor windows that slide open on warm days and provide plenty of sunlight and a scene of people walking around The Greene. Ordering takes place at a counter and food is then delivered to your table. The seats are well spaced and EO Burgers turns out to be a fine spot for casual lunch meetings.

Hickory River Smokehouse worth a try in Tipp City

Dayton has never been a barbecue town. A few BBQ joints are speckled across the region, but few carry any strong recognition. One of the notable local barbecue restaurants is Hickory River Smokehouse: Real Texas Barbecue in Tipp City.

Atmosphere: Hickory River has a comfy feel and offers plenty of BBQ accoutrements such as the cattle head on the wall, mounted rifles and the Texas star. Unlike most BBQ joints, Hickory Rivers has a large dining area with dozens of wooden booths, giving diners ample elbow room and space to converse. Soft country music and several flat screen TVs provide the backdrop for this casual locale. The restaurant is set up cafeteria style, where patrons order and bring the food to their table.

Slight correction: mediocre pseudo-barbecue - crock pot pork passed off as pulled pork, and ribs that are steamed or boiled and baked - is big here. Everyone around here likes the idea of barbecue, but slow smoking is not part of the cooking culture around here.

Butter Café brings plenty of flavor to Brown Street

When I read terms such as “gluten free” and “vegan friendly,” I don’t envision a meal that will satisfy. Not that I have anything against those terms (I am no friend of gluten), but they don’t conjure up images of savory dishes. Which brings me to the Butter Café, a new breakfast/lunch spot on Brown Street near the University of Dayton. Here’s what I found.

Atmosphere: The Butter Café exists in a nook, as part of a strip center. The restaurant has 10 tables of varying size, leaving little space to wiggle. That said, the place has its charms and is bright and cheerful. Its white chairs, white tables, tan walls and colorful artwork all work to create a quirky, yet intimate dining area. It’s a nice place for a casual meeting, but can get noisy as the tables are close together.
