If cox isn't hiring, try Miller Publishing, they do several local papers, including the Miamisburg paper.

Since the Golden Nugget has been talked about in this thread, here's something from the Dayton Business Journal:

Golden Nugget to rebuild

The owner of the Golden Nugget Restaurant in Kettering that was damaged by an early August fire is looking to rebuild.

Betsy Thomas submitted a request to be reviewed at the city of Kettering's Board of Zoning Appeals meeting Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Thomas is seeking to tear down and rebuild the portion of the building that she owns. She leases the dining section, and she has not been able to acquire that portion of the property yet, said Ron Hundt, Kettering city planner.

According to the zoning application, Thomas wants to start construction as soon as possible and no later than March 2006.

I've heard others mention the "Pleasantville" aspect of Dayton, too.

Perhaps this could be a marketing angle?

When people here say "Have a nice day!" they usually mean it.

Try Dorthoy Lane Market first for the beans before you head to Jungle Jims..

If Jungle Jim's doesn't have the groceries you are looking for, then it's not sold in America.

Welcome to Ohio! ...(the best state in the U.S.) ;)

As long as they include pie. :-)  I still can't get pie out of my head from a cnn article written before last year's election, posted in this thread (you made the Pleasantville comparison in that thread as well):

"Daytonians can be suspicious of outsiders, but they still show up with an apple pie when someone new moves onto the block."

So, have any suspicious neighbors brought you pie yet, New Orleans Lady?

Well...Dayton IS pleasant!

Quote from PigBoy - "So, have any suspicious neighbors brought you pie yet, New Orleans Lady?"

No not yet.  I am in an apartment community and so far people seem to keep to themselves.  I just saw one of my neighbors for the first time today.  He looked a bit scary while walking his ferocious white dog.

PigBoy, where do you live now?  I'm new to the thread but I caught that you are from the Dayton area but now live elsewhere.

Jeff, I assume you must still live in the area since you mostly post Dayton news and have photos of Dayton and area suburbs.  I am grateful for that since your posts are so detailed and your pictures are phenomenal.

Stop talking about breakfast places - you are making me hungry!  I actually did drive by the damaged Golden Nugget.  If it's that good, I sure hope it does come to life again.  Maybe we'll try First Watch restaurant soon since I know where that is and The Original Pancake House has been good to us too on two occasions - saw the largest omelette in my life there when our friend ordered it after helping us move here.

Jeff, have you ever watched the Dayton Daily Buzz on the WB station?  And I thought New Orleans TV reporters were cheezy!  :)  Those people are funny.  I just filled out a subscription to the Dayton Daily News so I can stay informed of the local happenings and news.  We'll probably spend this weekend doing more unpacking but by next weekend, I hope to get out and do something fun somewhere close by.

Have a fabulous weekend all!

The owner of the Golden Nugget Restaurant in Kettering...

Speaking of the Golden Nugget, what is the story on the adjacent property? We had alway been Cincy folk, but in the same year my dads company moved to Kettering and the Dragons started playing so we quickly took on our neighbor to the north. I remember that the large area across from the nugget was a big pile of debris before the multi-use development that is there today went in. Anyone remember?

I also witnessed the superwalmart rise on the adjacent property, ugh.

^ I believe you are talking about what is now Governor's Place.  The city of Kettering purchased what was the former Hills and Dales shopping center and led the redevelopment.

Interesting little story on the land across Dixie Hwy, where the Wal-Mart went in:  the Kettering-Moraine border runs through there, and when the Wal-Mart was built, it ended up having a portion of the building and parking lot in Kettering, and a portion in Moraine.  The larger part was in Moraine, and I think last year the two cities adjusted the border so that the entire property is now in Moraine.

Don't worry, kid, you'll come back after grad school.  I did. (Oh, and Pig, wish me luck on the defense.)

(I'm a complete newbie here, so I apologize if this has already been said.) As for Dayton points of interest, I don't know how many of the following parks and such have been mentioned.  I'm a public historian, so this is what I think about.  I tried to link all of these to their websites.

Carillon Historical Park

Boonshoft Museum of Discover (which I haven't been to in years, but I remember liking the planetarium)

Sunwatch (somehow affiliated with the Boonshoft, I believe)

National Park Site:

Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park (includes The Wright Cycle Company building and the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center and Aviation Trail Visitor Center; Huffman Prairie Flying Field and Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center; John W. Berry, Sr. Wright Brothers Aviation Center; and the Paul Laurence Dunbar State Memorial)

There's also Glen Helen in Yellow Springs, Clifton Gorge, and others that escape me at the moment.

Not a park, but we have the Dayton Air Show as well.  I've never been, but PigBoy went last summer so he can tell you how it is.

Oh, and good luck on the thesis defense!

Welcome LaMichelle,

It's nice to have a woman in the forum (although I did enjoy having you boys all to myself...wink, wink).  Thanks for the suggestions. I actually did some research on Carillon Park.  I saw they are looking for holiday help and volunteers so I sent them my information.  I figure it may be a way to learn the history of my new community and also meet some people. I haven't heard back from them yet though.

If you have some suggestions on other woman to woman things, let me know - things like (a) where to shop for clothes, (b) good place to get hair done, © best place for after-work cocktails, (d) and other fun activiites.  I am starting to miss my buds from back home.  I was always the social coordinator arranging Margarita drinks after work, bowling nights, or some other fun thing.

I've gone on a few interviews and just trying to find employment right now.  If you know a great place for women to work, please shed some light for me.

I can't believe I already experienced snow flurries!  It's going to be a tough winter for me.  I guess I will just curl up with Sammy Cat (my orange tabby) and hibernate for a few weeks.

For the record, Baton Rouge had it's first frost (if not freeze) of the season this morning.

^ Approximately coinciding with the sudden onset of winter in the midwest, it seems.  At least when the cold weather rolled in the other day, it came with a bit of snow.  Snow makes cold weather tolerable for me.

I talked to my parents in Louisiana today - they said they had temps in the 80's on the same day we were in the Teens here.  :-o  I drove in the snow for the first time Thursday night!  I was a little nervous and clutching the wheel at first, but it really wasn't bad.

I can hardly believe that I have been here in Ohio for four weeks now.  In just that short amount of time, I have done a lot - gone on ten interviews, joined a gym, visited Frank Lloyd Wright's Wescott House in Springfield, went ice-skating at Riverscape Park, gone to two social outings to meet new gal-pals, found a dry-cleaner, did holiday shopping, and found a great steak place.  Not bad, eh?

I feel like I am on an extended vacation just having fun exploring a new place, but it is slowly becoming more like "home".  I am thinking of writing an article on Northern hospitality (or Mid-western Hospitality) because it is outstanding thus far and could even surpass the Southern hospitality I grew up with.

Well, I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving. My husband and I enjoyed a quiet lunch at a local restaurant then saw the new Harry Potter movie.  We couldn't get over how clean the theatre was - to actually walk down an aisle and not have your shoes stick to the floor or find gum under your arm-rest.  Amazing!

My ears are still popping at time while driving around, especially toward Cincy-Hamilton-Middletown.  And I still marvel at how the people pile up their leaves in a neat mound and put it in the street.  But it's great and I'm happy to be an Ohioan.

Chao for now!

Northern Hospitality... that sounds interesting!

I don't hear you complaining too loudly about cold weather, so I trust you're surviving well enough.  By now you should probably have experienced a couple of January-ish days, so you can at least be comforted by the fact that it won't get a whole lot worse (just more prolonged, of course, with a few extra-freezing days thrown in).  My family had a rough first winter when we moved back to Ohio, too.  We came from Hawaii, where we were cold when the temperature fell much below 70.

The weather for my Thanksgiving visit home was interesting... from too cold on Thursday to nice and warm on Sunday.  Spring will be the same way, of course.  My roommates in the past several years, who were from mild South Asian climates, always complained about the wild changes in weather in the spring.  Such a joy to watch them suffer!

Hmm... I need to get my sister to come back here and respond to you.  I don't think she has good answers for you, but I'll remind her to return anyway.

Hi New Orleans lady,

I just stumbled upon this thread and I felt the need to add some additional thoughts.  I think everyone did a pretty good job as far as capturing the flavor of Dayton.  I worked in Dayton a little over a year ago for about 5 months as a consultant at Caresource in downtown Dayton.  I had only visited Dayton once as a kid to see the air force museum.  I'm from the Akron area and always felt that Dayton was sort of Akron's "twin".  So I've been comparing and contrasting Akron and Dayton in my head for the past year or so now.

Anyways, there are definitely a lot of things I liked about Dayton, so much that if I had to seriously live there year-round I might be able to stand it.  The things I liked downtown were mainly in the Oregon district.  Thai 9 and the little coffee shop with gelato and pastries a couple doors down.  I also liked Trolley Stop for blues bands.  I love seeing Scottie Bratcher an amazing blues guitarist phenom along the lines of Stevie Ray Vaughn.  The Irish-styled Dublin Pub across the street from Trolley Stop can also be a fun atmosphere.  No one has mentioned the UD area.  They have some good food choices along their newly renovated strip there.  I absolutely LOVE Dewey's Pizza.  Thats definitely the best pizza in Dayton.  The dough is made fresh and they serve really good micro-beer on tap(I believe they had Abita on tap once).  I do love the other hometown pizza of Marion's pizza but thats a different type of thing altogether.  One feels transported back in time looking at all the old pics of stars that passed through Dayton in the 60s and 70's on its walls.

I personally felt most at home in Belmont and Oakwood areas.  I liked shopping options on Far Hills Drive in Oakwood.  But I also liked perusing the Belmont beer store with the best selection of beer I've really ever seen.  The Belmont Tavern I think it was called was also like stepping back into time.  Its the pool hall there that seemed very much out of a movie of dingy dirty pool halls.  I had never been in anything like that before.  The people were pretty nice there even though they did seem a little suspicious of me.  Also in Belmont is a park with the same name.  I've picked up a little habit of playing Disc Golf and they have a very good disc golf course there that I enjoyed playing because of the nice scenery and setting.  I liked driving around Oakwood trying to get lost.  Golfing in Oakwood was also pretty cool with their hills there.

Some other things I miss about Dayton:  The Books And Co. bookstore.  This is truly the coolest bookstore in the country.  They have authors there every day giving lectures about their books.  A must visit.  El Meson was also mentioned but I feel the need to mention it again.  It has the best bar in the Dayton area.  I'd like to say SW OH but I definitely have no idea about Cinci.  The point is they make all sorts of tropical drinks from various countries.  They have amazing food.  Once again I felt myself being transported out of Ohio and into Key West perhaps or Dominica.  The decor and the music of the restaurant is phenomenal.  I go for the amazing mojitos myself..

Nobody has mentioned Skyline Chili.  Thats a chain of restaurants out of Cinci.  Very different kind of cuisine.  I do like it.  Its basically spaghetti noodles with some meat sauce and I think something like cinnamon mixed in.  Not really sure.. I suppose its a secret.  To me, those are the highlights of Dayton.

Hope you're able to check most of these places out N. O. lady.

Audidave, thanx for the tip on the Belmont beer store.  I knew it was the local source for microbrew things, but didnt know they had a big beer selection.  I stopped there today and it does, indeed, have an outstanding beer selection, both local and domestic.

Good recommendations.  I heard Scottie Bratcher at the blues fest at Dave Hall Plaza and he is quite good. Trolley Stop is perhaps my favorite Oregon place as it has a cozy atmosphere and the music is usually good.  They have a good little open mike night, too.

The coffee shop you mentioned is pit stop for me when in the city...usually stop there after browsing at Gem City Records.

No,not bad at all, and thanks for that on the Wescott House.  I didnt know it was open now.  BTW, what wast the great steak place you found?

Please don't say the Paragon Club...

Hey ColDayMan, no it was not the Paragon club....it was Carver's Steak and Chops.  I realize that may be a chain around here but there was none in Louisiana.  It reminded the husband and me a little of Ruth's Chris but was more affordable.  We went there on Thanksgiving day and the service was impeccable.

By the way, I was quoted in the life section of the Dayton Daily News yesterday, in Sharon Short's editorial column.  I tried to find the link on-line for it but couldn't.  I clipped it out and scanned it in.  If any of you can find it, please post it here.  Yesterday was a good day - saw my name in  print being quoted then I got a call for a freelance writing gig.  Now I'm just working on a full-time thing....

I need to get my Ohio drivers license by January.  I guess I'll ty to go by and get an instruction book for the written test.  It's been seventeen years since I took the test and should probably brush up on the knowledge.  :)  So if you see some crazy broad dancing around in a car near I-75 with a Louisiana license plates, it might just be me....

Around here many women take the term "broad" as derogatory.

Anyway, talking to another man who moved from out of state, he said the test was such common sense, there was no need to study. He shared that one of his questions had a picture of a crossroads sign and had 4 options as to what it meant: there is a church nearby, someone died here, exit, and the answer that an intersection is coming up.

:)   So if you see some crazy broad dancing around in a car near I-75 with a Louisiana license plates, it might just be me....

It could just be me, but I got the sense that she was joking around with this sentence...

She's not from another country for god's sake!

Yes, I saw that!  I was wondering if that was you mentioned as it sounded like what you've said here.  congratuations on that freelance gig, too!

Carvers was pretty good when I went, but that was years ago when it first opened.

Weatherwise, I hope this cold weather isn't too much a shock.  Be carefull with the icy roads when we have what we had last Saturday night...that was a pretty messy situation with the sleet & freezing rain.

The column in which you were quoted... what was it about?

  • Author

Now if only I could get my hands on some crawfish....then my life would be close to perfect.  My husband wants me to make etoufee or creole for his work buddies but I can't find the stuff.  And shrimp is about 7 bucks (or more) a pound here.  I miss the good ole' days of paying 2.99 a pound for seafood in N'awlins.

Good observations about the weather Jeff.  Yes that was an experience with the rain/sleet/ice on Sunday morning when I woke.  I thought I was Supergirl in the Crystal City with those deep icicles hanging from my car.  My arms got a good workout from the ice scraping I did!

Hey, I'm dreaming up some topics of interest for my freelancing thing.  I started writing a list of things that I feel Ohioans should have warned me (a Southern Belle) before I moved here.  Let me know if you think it is funny or feel free to add to it....

"Things that Ohioans Should Warn Southerns About Before Moving to the Midwest"

1.  There's no need to chill wine in the winter here - simply leave it out on the table or near a window draft and it's ready to drink at anytime.

2. If you grew up below sea level, you may experience ear popping as you drive around Ohio.  (No, you're not having a seizure or a weird spasm.  Your body will eventually adjust to higher ground).

3. Forget doing push-ups in the winter - just scrape ice off the car for a complete upper body workout.

4. People aren't being rude by pushing their trash in the street.  There is a reason that people spend hours piling leaves from their lawn into a mound in the street.

5. Replace "ya'll" with "you guys"; "where ya' at?" with "How are you today?"; and "make groceries" with "going to the store".

That's all I have so far.  It's a work in progress as I live here longer.  I'm also thinking of writing some tips for getting to know a new community and moving successfully.

Hey if you're looking for a laugh (New Orleans style), see if you can download the song "The 12 Yats of Christmas" by Benny Grunch and The Christmas Bunch.  That will give you a sense of how deep-rooted New Orleanians speak.  You'll also gain insight into New Orleans although you might not get all the humor in it.

Well I'm off for now.....I'm going relive my youth (because I'm so old at age 27)  :) by watching the Charlie Brown Christmas special on t.v.

later my cyber-friends

LOL!  I'll be on the lookout for a Nawlin's cahr ;).

I'll be driving up I-71 from Cincy.

The results are in for the latest Dayton Daily News "Best of Dayton" poll.  I'm going to post the top slot in each category, but go to the website for the top 3 as well as some commentary.

Best TV Station- WHIO Channel 7

-Agreed.  Except for Donna Jordan's face.  All 5 of them.

Best Radio Station- WXEG 103.9 FM

-Hardly.  U-92.1, Dayton's classic R&B station.

Best TV Personality- Jim Bucher

-No he's not.  Repressed prick.  Latisha Perry is my favorite.  She's so geniune and nice.  So is Marsha Bonhardt.

Best Radio Personality- Boomer

-Who?  That cat on Z-93?  Alter...land...ugh...

One thing El Meson actually isn't is Mexican.  They pretty much serve no Mexican dishes there.  They serve Carribean/Latin American and Spanish dishes.  So thats why they aren't in the running for "Best Mexican" They should have gotten the nod for Best Restaurant but I've never been to Winds.  Winds seems pretty far outside of Dayton to get the nod as best restaurant in Dayton though.

Best Festival- Oktoberfest

-I like the Greek Fest and Dayton Black Cultural Festival myself...

You have to pay to get into the Oktoberfest!

Cityfolk was the best I've seen this summer.

And what could karoke at Therapy Cafe possibly be like...sing along with Sigur Ros?

@@@

this list was pretty predictable.  The Winds, Elsas, etc etc etc.

Winds seems pretty far outside of Dayton to get the nod as best restaurant in Dayton though.

Yellow Springs is close enough to be sort of a playground for Dayton hipsters and weekend hippies, so its always in the running for these best-of lists.

Best Radio Personality- Boomer

I would've voted for Rev Cool on WYSO.  I've never heard of Boomer.

Best Bar- Tanks

This should have been The Century.

(clearly, this poll is suburban-oriented)

Welcome to Dayton...where there is a 'Best County Fair" on the ballot.  I'm suprised they didn't have "Best Corn Maze".

Dang. I was hoping this was one of Jeff's photo essays ...

ColDay, a couple of your suggestions did make the number 2 or 3 spots for their categories.

^Oh, I'm sure.

I KNOW!

Chicken Louie's or Broaster Hut.  I'm partial to Pinky's, Burger Master, and Lee's myself.

But does Flying Pizza have ham and sauerkraut pizza?  I don't think so!  :)

^Exactly.

Flying Pizza tastes bland.  I actually like taste in my pizzas, thank you.

Bland my ass....  I wish I had 4 hands so I could give that comment 4 thumbs down!  You silly cracker crust Midwesterners make me laugh.  It is right up there with the delusional Chicagoans that call that crap up their pizza.  I will give you Dewey's but not anything cut in squares...

Please read how to hold a pizza here: http://www.sliceny.com/gopizza/archives/000376.php

So I'm supposed to hold a piece of cardboard with tomato sauce and pepperoni like the Holland Tunnel?

No.  I'll take my pizzas with taste, Mr. "Sneekers & Cold Cuts"

Mr. "Sneekers & Cold Cuts"

Is that a reference to his east coast vocabulary?  Is there a different Midwest word for "cold cuts"?

HAHAH, yes they call it "Lunch Meat" :D

Weirdos! :-D

I am a native Ohioan, but I'm descended from east coasters (plus my basic vocabulary-learning years were actually in the D.C. area), and to this day I have not picked up a number of the Midwest versions of things.  Especially "pop".  May God drop a grand piano on my head if I ever say "pop" instead of "soda"!

But I'm straying from the topic... by all means, resume the pizza debate.

Oh God.  Twits.

I always found it amusing in my travels that "East Coasters" would get OFFENDED by the usage of pop yet the Midwest/Canada/Intrawest never cared if you said pop or soda.  You can even say "pop" down south and they'd still wouldn't care.

Perhaps the East Coasters are...well...pissed that they are outnumbered?  Much like "tonic" in Boston?  "Soft drink" in western North Carolina?

LaRosa's, Penn Station Subs & Skyline Chili & Dewey's all list "SODA" on their menu.  Seems retarded that the region calls Soda, "Pop" yet all the locally based restaurants use the proper term "Soda".

And don't get me started on people that say the word, "Cuss".  It just hurts my ears.

You are aware that all of these have customers that would never use soda unless they see it on a board, right?  Much like "tennis shoes" in a mall; or "lunch meat" at Kroger.

Again, I find it ironic that the "soda" sayers care so much about how they hate "pop" yet "pop" drinkers don't even bat an eyelash towards them.  Insecurites, perhaps, of old chivalry?
