RIP Dominic's 2007.  Thanks for the many wonderful memories.  And I do mean many.  You won't soon be forgotten, but it will never been the same.

There's a lot to be said about new beginnings, though. Let's hope Ms. Mantia is able to have a successful relaunch. With The Breakfast (Brunch) Club coming back, and Chicken Louie's seemingly thriving in their second location on East Third St., Dayton just might be ready to stick it to the chains.

excellent news about the new milanos opening up in the beav. could somebody post when it opens?

I say Dominic's should move to the old Rockwell's building just accross the river from downtown.  Awesome skyline view from there, and close to a lot of stuff (Dayton Art Institute, 5/3 Field, Schuster Ctr.).  I can't believe that some restaurant is not prospering at that site with it's awesome view and location.  I'd go there to eat!!  If not Dominic's moving there, then someone else!!!!

Dominic's was opened by Dominic Mantia and his wife Sue in March of 1957 after they left Longo's restaurant on E. Third St. which was owned by Dominic's cousin

I need to post this old ad I got from Longo's...found it in the city directory.  Probably late 1940s.  It's a hoot.

Chows came and went real fast...i was there once. Not enought to really try the place. WHat I did have was good.

This is good news.  I think Meadolark was proof-of-concept that a restaurant like this can work in the south area.  We also have Cena, over at the mall.  This will be a good add for the area, and I think the market is there.

I hope they succeed. It's certainly something we've rarely seen South of town. As much as I enjoyed it, Chow's might have been too eclectic. I wonder when something is going to move into the spot across the street vacated by Smokey Bones. That small strip never seems fully occupied for long.

BTW, ColDayMain, in case no one has said so before, I really appreciate you posting these articles.

Thanks.  Just doin' my job.

Last night driving home I noticed that the old Perkins at Wilmington and Woodman has reopened as the Starlite.  I have no idea what kind of menu but when I get a chance I'll find out and post it.

the breakfast club is coming back? nice - more good news.

Apparently, it is back. I drove by this past weekend and the place seemed filled.

From what I have heard, it's supposed to be trendy/upscale. It's certainly not Perkin's.

It's too bad RJ Metropolitan's didn't last, in that or the Centerville (by DLM) location.

Gosh, that Encore was actually was a nice place.

But is this typical for food service.  That places shut down with no warning?  I recall this happened to the Cooker off of 725 in Washington Twp.  The place closed without warning, employees showed up, doors were all locked.

But its good to hear the Fairborn Giovannis stays open..that place is sort of a Fairborn institution, like Roushes or Foys.

Best Breakfast in Dayton

Many Dayton business executives adhere to an old U.S. Army slogan and "get more done before 6 a.m. than most people do all day." To do so requires energy and that means breakfast. Many folks just grab cereal and coffee from home, but the Dayton area boasts an array of quality breakfast places serving up classics like bacon and eggs to more Mexican-inspired choices such as breakfast burritos.

Chappys is supposed to have an excellent beer selection according to one of the DDN blogs.

Hopefully, being in a former Bill Knapp's location won't hurt it. The Thai place before Chappy's had its issues.

I initially thought they were going to go into former Thirsty Dog location.

I checked their website when they opened, and they did not have lunch hours. While I do understand how a restaurant of this nature would be best-suited in the evening, I think their menu would fit well for the lunch crowd.

Ooh, it's like deja vu.

30 Sonics over five years? That's more than Quizno's tried a few years back, and that seemed to work out well for them. Not.

Sonic is a MUCH larger and more unique food chain than Quizno's. Quizno's didn't have a chance in this area which is dominated by Penn Station and Subway. Sonic has no other drive up restaurants in this area to compete against except maybe an A&W on Woodman Dr and will succeed strictly on that alone. The ones they already built are packed during all business hours.

In terms of oversaturation, I think the comparison is valid. 30 in five years is still 30 in five years. It doesn't say how big of an area that is, but if it's only a couple counties, that's too much. The locations in Franklin/Middletown and Hamilton don't seem swamped whenever I drive by.

I didn't know the Root Beer Stande, now for sale, was an A & W. I thought it was independent. Brown's on 3rd is closed. There's also wot-a-dog in New Carlisle, but it is true there isn't much out there by way of old-fashoned drive-in restaurants. I just think that's too much, too soon.

I think Sonic is talking a 4 county area, Montgomery, Miami, Greene and Warren. So I think 30 will be fine. I think there primary target is direct competition with the burger joints. The root beer stand on Woodman used to be an A&W. I just continue to call it that since I grew up around it.

Sonic does certainly have an edge, especially with dessert/breakfast/fountain options. Beyond the carhops, that is what sets them apart.

I don't know, I look at Wendy's shuttering so many locations, including all of downtown Columbus and even the location on Dixie off of Little York. I look at other fast food places consolidating with 2-in-1s. And, plenty of others places not setting up so many free standing places but setting up shop inside gas station convenience stores. Even as Sonic is unique, and I actually like Sonic for what they are, I think such rapid expansion is a very bold move that could backfire.

Well at least I will get to go there before they close down ;-)

Right now a frozen limeade sounds pretty good to me. Sorry to be such an alarmist. Five years from now there'll still be plenty of Sonics left.

The Rootbeer Stande opened for business on Monday.  It might be for sale still but they have already opened and gotta get me footlong chili dog this weekend.

Wow. That is much earlier than I would have thought. El Nino lives.

they've been opening in early January the past couple of years now. Not really sure why. I can't see them really busy and a cute girl wearing an eskimo jacket serving my food is not going to make me stop in. ;-)
