Posted October 1, 20195 yr Over Christmas and New Years 2018-19 I traveled to Europe with a couple of friends. I will link to the other topics once I create them. Munich, Germany: December 21-24 Vienna, Austria: December 24-27 Prague, Czechia: December 27-29 Berlin, Germany: December 29-January 3 Zermatt, Switzerland: January 3-5 Thun, Switzerland: January 5 Bern, Switzerland: January 5 Zurich, Switzerland: January 5-7 After New Years we flew into Switzerland and took a train to Zermatt on the night of January 3rd. I've only been skiing once when I was a child, and wasn't super interested in learning on the bunny hills of Zermatt, so I spent my time taking photos and walking around the town. I was also sick for the full day I was in Zermatt, so I'm glad I wasn't looking forward to skiing. I went up a hill to take photos, and wandered around the city some before going back to the hostel and sleeping the rest of the evening. I didn't get a lot of photos, and didn't really take any of their "downtown" area. Enjoy the shots I did take, though! Everyone gets around by foot, a few buses, or by these little electric taxis for hire visible on the left. We walked everywhere, which can be pretty exhausting when you're sick and out of shape, but most of the hotels are within walking distance to downtown despite the rapid elevation changes. A few of these were around but no one was around to ask about them. DSC_2390 by Ryan Lammi, on Flickr The next day I took the train to Thun and Bern before ending our trip in Zurich. I'll have those updates shortly!
October 1, 20195 yr I went by the OTHER side of the Matterhorn this past September near Aosta (Breuil-Cervinia). I had a rental car and decided on Charmonix over Zermatt. Next time, though... October 1, 20195 yr There are a few most-beautiful places on earth. To me, Zermatt is one of them. I would retire there if I could. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

I don't think I could retire to Zermatt. It's a little to isolated from anything to be a permanent home for me. It's definitely beautiful though!
October 2, 20195 yr nice. i've probably read every mountain climbing history book and watched every documentary on mountain climbing there is, so these matterhorn villages all seem very familiar.
October 2, 20195 yr i just remembered i have have a note of famous mountain climbing routes i have saved on my iphone from when i was obsessed about it lol. i still add to it from time to time when i am bored commuting. the matterhorn is pretty straightforward as far as routes go, although don't mistake that for easier - ha: matterhorn/mt. cervin zermatt swarzsee hornlihutte (10,696') solvay hut (13,133') summit (14,692')
