I don't know what your accommodations will be, but recently I spoke to someone who was raving about the Lidl store (first in Manhattan) that opened in February a short walk from your location. I didn't even know it was there. Hope they open one downtown!

We are doing airbnb. We already checked out the owner and reviews and seems legit. A garden level apt. So we plan to shop for food and cook some meals.

Recent Europe travel thoughts -- seemed like a lot more smokers in Europe than in the US; I really appreciate the ban on smoking in restaurants in the US.

The Netherlands' is great -- easy to drive, but often faster and more convenient to bike and walk within the cities.  Isn't that the way it should be?

The motorbikes/scooters in Italy were a real nuisance -- noisy, smelly, and the drivers weren't concerned about zooming right by your shoulder.  A sidestep could be disastrous.  The smell of exhaust in the big Italian cities was overwhelming after the clean air in The Netherlands.  And Italy was really hot!

Visiting Ireland impressed on me what an Irish ghetto I grew up in without knowing it. Reading off the names in one graveyard sounded like my 8th grade class roster at St. Christopher's.

Coincidentally, my great grandfather was born on an island in Clew Bay. He and 12 siblings, along with 2 parents, lived in an 800 square foot, one room farm house.

Two other families were on the island as well - they all shared the 40 acres.

My grandfather and 11 siblings emigrated to the US (9 ended up in Cleveland, 1 in NY, 1 in Chicago) - 1 stayed in Ireland.

The two other families on the island also saw most of their kids emigrate... All three families ended up with homes on W 61st St one generation later.

Since my wife's brother got out of Ukraine a couple days ago and is in Germany with his wife and newborn daughter, we're trying to plan a trip to Germany for a week or two in August. But I've seen the air fares...OUCH. Anyone got any suggestions on cheap flights to Europe and maybe taking a train the rest of the way?

Hey Ken - I had family members that went to the continent after our trip to Europe... some considerations...

Do NOT fly through any UK airports - there's about a 40% chance your connection will get canceled right now. Extend that rule to Canada and Ireland as well, because both countries are OVERWHELMED right now.

Right now, flights to Brussels are manageable ($818 CLE to Brussels - and that's the best you'll find right now. And that might make for a fun, manageable train ride to Germany versus flying into Spain or Portugal - both of which also have (relatively) affordable fares right now.

They're $800 in September but $1300+ next month. I found some cheaper flights to Copenhagen.

QUEST'S WORLD OF WONDER

'World's coolest' neighborhood for 2022 named by Time Out

Francesca Street, CNN • Published 11th October 2022

(CNN) — It's one of the best parts about a vacation -- that moment when you discover the side of the city that's clearly more popular with locals than tourists.

Maybe it's the off-the-beaten-track cafe with the best coffee you've ever tasted, the underground bar that's not signposted on the street above, or the restaurant dishing up mouthwatering local delicacies you've never heard of.

To help you discover more hidden gems on your next city break, global media brand Time Out has released its annual list of the worlds coolest neighborhoods:

1. Colonia Americana - Guadalajara, Mexico

2. Cais do Sodré - Lisbon, Portugal

3. Wat Bo Village - Siem Reap, Cambodia

4. Ridgewood - New York City, USA

5. Mile End - Montreal, Canada

6. Barrio Logan - San Diego, USA

7. Shimokitazawa - Tokyo, Japan

8. Cliftonville - Margate, UK

9. Barrio Yungay - Santiago, Chile

10. Cours Julien - Marseille, France

well it looks like commercial space travel is maturing, but has some issues --- who would have guessed?

Space travel is a long way from its destination

Miriam Kramer, author of Axios Space

The private human spaceflight industry will need to scale up and find new markets to reach its goal of resembling the airline industry to take people to space.

Why it matters: SpaceX and others have already begun selling their dream of rockets launching thousands of people to orbit, the Moon, Mars and even beyond.

But today, the private human spaceflight industry is a relatively small portion of the space economy and several hurdles stand in the industry's way of reaching its goal.

Driving the news: SpaceX announced last week that an American couple purchased tickets to fly around the Moon aboard a Starship vehicle.

Siem Reap / Angkor Wat is one of my all time favorite trips. It is stunning and absolutely worth visiting.

Just saw this.  How does one discern between "stayed here" and "visited here"?

I took it at overnight stay versus visiting for a day and seeing some attraction, which itself is step up from “drove through it”. Even with that distinction, the survey has at least one too many levels.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Changing planes at airport - is that considered stopping or passing through?
