Posted November 7, 20195 yr Thought this interview on Fresh Air today was incredibly interesting: https://www.npr.org/2019/11/06/776747102/we-re-all-struggling-writer-saeed-jones-reflects-on-identity-and-acceptance There's a lot of takeaways from it, but being a biased Ohioan like I am I thought his discussion on Columbus (which starts around the 27:00 minute mark) was enlightening. Saeed Jones moved from NYC to Columbus' Short North a couple months ago. He is an author, poet, and Buzzfeed editor, and has said (paraphrased) that Columbus is a refreshing place to live because everything is easier to do than in NYC. Errands are easier to run, rent is lower, and there's more of a community. He said Columbus is the gayest city he has ever lived in, including SF, and that the literary community is great too. I do not have a WaPo subscirption so I have not read this article, but it would be worth the read as well IMO: https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/books/forget-new-york-for-writer-saeed-jones-columbus-ohio-is-the-place-to-be-a-literary-star/2019/10/22/7d0deb60-ef58-11e9-8693-f487e46784aa_story.html

It's an essay that he wrote about Columbus: Regarding Columbus, Ohio Why Columbus? I can usually hear the question coming a few sentences before it arrives. People, old friends and new, Twitter followers and digital passersby, journalists interviewing me about my new book, want to know. To say nothing of proud Ohioans. And, obviously given the concept of this newsletter, I enjoy talking about my joy. So, whenever asked (and okay, often when not asked) I happily rhapsodize about the town I up and moved to this September after living in New York City for almost a decade. I go into “I swear no one is paying me to say this” mode. “Why Columbus?” you ask? How much time do you have? The thing is, my explanation is always iridescent, taking on the color of the person asking as well as my mood and the moment itself. The answers are legion and varied; the answers are all the truth. And so, this one is for Columbus and all the colors of why. ... More here: https://saeedjones.substack.com/p/regarding-columbus-ohio
