For those not too familiar with Akron geography, here is West Hill on the map...which is notably closer to Downtown than Highland Square:

First Look: Spotted Owl Bar in Akron’s West Hill Neighborhood

Posted By Douglas Trattner on Wed, Oct 9, 2019 at 3:39 pm

The Spotted Owl just celebrated its fifth anniversary in Tremont, and by the end of the month the cocktail bar will open a second location, this one in the West Hill neighborhood of Akron. Owner Will Hollingsworth has spent the past year converting the old Firehouse No. 3 at 60 S. Maple St. into an attractive, warmly lit watering hole. The turn-of-the-century building, once home to the fire station that now resides across the street, features 16-foot ceilings clad in gorgeous honey-toned wood. Cut-outs for a pair of fireman’s poles, now patched up, can still be seen above. The spacious 3,000-square-foot room will seat 75 guests at the bar, high-tops and a couple of sumptuous velvet booths.

“The building has great bones,” says Hollingsworth. “I wanted to keep things simple. The space knows what it wants to be, you just have to listen.”

^On one of my visits back to Akron, I had visited the cocktail bar that occupied this space before the Spotted Owl.  It was pretty good and I'm not sure why it shut down.  I'm happy to try the Spotted Owl on my next trip.  It's in a really cool building.

The two owners ended up not working well together. They were doing pretty good business.

Akron City Council approves plan for affordable housing for I Promise School families

Updated Feb 06, 2020; Posted Feb 05, 2020

By Robin Goist, cleveland.com

AKRON, Ohio – Akron City Council has agreed to sell two acres on the city’s West Side for the construction of a 50-unit apartment building that is intended for families with children attending the nearby I Promise School.

Council suspended its rules Monday to do away with a second reading of the proposal and immediately approve the sale of the empty land for $1 to the East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation, EANDC.

Akron's I Promise School, Tangier team up for new gym, community space

CRAIN'S AKRON BUSINESS

Two Akron legends are joining forces to bring a sports complex to I Promise School students.

The LeBron James Family Foundation (LJFF) is teaming up with The Tangier, the longtime, well-known Akron restaurant and events center, and sponsors Dick's Sporting Goods and the J.M. Smucker Co. to build basketball courts and community areas for I Promise School students and their families at The Tangier on West Market Street.

https://www.crainscleveland.com/akron-news/akrons-i-promise-school-tangier-team-new-gym-community-space

Its really incredible to see the holistic family-centric model of the I-Promise School spill over into tangible neighborhood investments like housing and community infrastructure. This is beginning to look more and more like the headline grabbing model the rest of the nation should replicate. Leave it to LBJ to back up the headlines!

LeBron James Family Foundation purchases Akron's Tangier, plans to turn it into multi-purpose facility

'House Three Thirty' will contain a sports complex, restaurants, and even a bank.

============================

I thought about putting this in Akron restaurant news ... but even as things stand, the last few times I was at Tangier, it wasn't in its capacity as a restaurant, either.  It was at hosted events in the event space there.

And the LJFF picking this up makes a lot of sense, in hindsight.

Glad he’s keeping the restaurant going. Very cool. Hopefully it can be transitioned back in the near future to a venue.

Restaurant has been closed for years. It was only being used for concerts and banquets.

You can see it in the video included in the channel 3 story, but I didn’t notice this until I read the Beacon Journal article:  At the top left of the second picture in this article there is a tallish building sketched in near downtown called the I Promise Institute.   This is the first I’ve heard that, and there’s no mention of it in the article.  I wonder what that is.

The Lebron James Family Foundation (LJFF) “I Promise” Program has partnered with The University of Akron to make a commitment to the program’s students to attend our University.  The Foundation wants to develop a “home away from home” on campus for these students.  The University has assigned approximately 7,000 square feet to the Foundation in a vacant area on the 3rd floor of Infocision Stadium.

This is from July 2017, should it should be done an operational at this point.

Tangier’s iconic dome torn down and thrown out

Mark J. Price

Akron Beacon Journal

The Akron skyline will never be the same.

Workers have removed the iconic dome atop the Tangier restaurant as the landmark complex prepares for its next chapter.

There will be no salvaging the distinctive blue ornament. The structure was dismantled and tossed in a dumpster.

Here are some current photos of the renovation work being done at the former Tangier. They removed the covered dropoff between the parking deck and entertainment complex. Not sure if anything is being planned to replace it. I would assume so since it does cover the drive when walking from the deck and we are in NE Ohio.

There is one photo looking in the door off Market St. There is a sports bar being planned from what I was told.

Pete Mitchell didn't have any intention for his Cleveland-based business, Mitchell's Homemade Ice Cream, to expand into Akron.

But the LeBron James Family Foundation has a habit of making things happen that were never on the table.

Six months ago, the foundation asked Mitchell if his business would like to be a partner in House Three Thirty, a new kind of community center in Akron. Mitchell said until then, he didn't know much about the project or the work the foundation has done in the city.

There are several spaces that are not yet completed. The main floor will house a sportsbar. In the basement there will be a Lebron James museum.

LeBron James Family Foundation begins leasing affordable housing in Akron

The LeBron James Family Foundation's I Promise Housing is wrapping up construction in Akron, Ohio.

The foundation said that it has began leasing the 50-unit affordable housing development at 445 S. Maple St. The project is located near the I Promise School, which was created as part of NBA star and Akron native LeBron James's I Promise Initiative.

A housing development is considered "affordable" by the federal government when it charges no more than 30% of the occupants' gross income for housing costs, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Being an affordable development may also qualify the project to receive low-income housing tax credits or other benefits.

Affordable housing complex backed by LeBron James unveiled in Akron

Ideastream Public Media | By Conor Morris

Published June 8, 2023 at 8:01 PM

"Officials celebrated the opening of the new I Promise Housing apartment complex in Akron Thursday, just a half mile from LeBron James' I Promise School.

The 50-unit complex is meant to provide affordable housing, and stability, to families who need it across Akron, including families with children at the school. Officials said there will be social services available on the first floor of the building as well, including financial counseling and mental health services.

...

Gloria James, LeBron’s mother, who works with the foundation, says I Promise Housing is part of a new model of “community building" in Akron, meant to lift up the area's residents who struggle to make ends meet. Along with House Three Thirty, the LeBron James Family Foundation has opened a transitional housing complex called the I Promise Village, and is working to open a new "HealthQuarters" across the street from House Three Thirty that will provide healthcare to low-income Akron residents.

...

Anna Deger, vice president of residential services at the East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation, said rent at the I Promise Housing complex starts at roughly $700 and goes to about $1,100, for two, three and four-bedroom apartments. She said the housing is reserved for low-income residents who earn half or less of the area median income, with an expectation that 40% of residents will be using housing vouchers to help subsidize their rent."
