August 29, 20213 yr Fahrenheit moving to 55 Public Square. Great news for both entities. (Sorry for your loss, Tremont, but I’m sure you’ll get something else interesting in that space.) Crossposted in restaurant thread. When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Because of Burke Airport you unfortunately can’t fly basically anywhere from the railroad tracks and north. Not entirely accurate. I fly frequently around airports for various reasons that have nothing to do with the airports or the planes themselves, and it boils down to this: You can apply for authorization through your phone app. If you use DJI's apps, you can do this automatically by providing your name and phone number. I've never been denied authorization. You can fly near airports but limitations increase the closer to the facility and/or runways you are. For instance, I am able to get pretty close to Yeager International in Charleston, WV because the runways are pretty high up. The are height limits in the vicinity of the runway ramps but it's enough that I can get 300 feet in elevation for aerials. I can also get atop the capitol building if I wanted to without an issue. These height limits can vary greatly. Many small airfields won't have restrictions built in - but you will need to know at least where they are at. I unknowingly flew pretty close to a grass airfield that I didn't have marked one evening and had to pull down because of a plane that was just sputtering about. There are other considerations that can be covered in your Section 107 training but you can get amazing downtown Cleveland shots with a drone very easy. Think about this: you typically aren't going higher than the skyscraper (although you can if you consider the height limit + surface rule), and planes will be far higher in the sky by the time they even get near that. Burke's runways go E-W; the skyscrapers are south of that. And you can fly north of the tracks - but there are restrictions on height the closer to the runway you get. Eventually, you won't be able to fly at all because of the runway but it's a pretty defined area. There are also apps that you can use to communicate with other drone pilots but -no one- I've worked with have used any of them - personally and professionally. Edited August 29, 20213 yr by seicer

"The largest loan is for $60 million from Pittsburgh-based First National Bank of Pennsylvania, which has its regional office in the building. The second-largest is an $11 million investment in state and federal tax credits from PNC Bank of Pittsburgh. However, since state and federal tax credits are funded only after a historic project is completed and passes preservation muster, the 55 Public Square project was advanced those funds with an $8.8 million temporary loan from Tristate Capital Bank of Pittsburgh that was recorded at this time. The financial package also includes a $5 million government investment from the Ohio Water Development Authority, which funds such economic development projects."
September 29, 20213 yr The building reno for the future Fahrenheit spot is on this week's design review agenda. Looks like they're going to remove the front entry "solarium" and all those ugly awnings too, adding new windows and facade treatments. This will make such a huge difference! Can't wait to see what the eventual plaza / outdoor dining space will look like too. https://documentcloud.adobe.com/link/track?uri=urn%3Aaaid%3Ascds%3AUS%3A9fe6d24d-6e4e-4332-b768-f0c11d907fb2#pageNum=13

October 20, 20213 yr i mean, anything will be a vast improvement, but is this render current for the restaurant? looks good -- including the entrance -- and that they are keeping the windows in the jet-age style.
October 22, 20213 yr This could be a very chic building. Interested in seeing the floor plans and views.
December 20, 20213 yr Work has started on 55 Public Square. Up close this building is in rough shape. It will be interesting to see what K&D does here!

January 5, 20223 yr ^never heard of that business before; its great that they are in 55 Public Square and inDowntown in general. It shows the elderly are still coming downtown for things!
March 28, 20223 yr Snapped this from my apartment. I couldn't tell if the windows are temporarily removed or if the reflective glass is being replaced, but there definitely appears to be a decent amount of renovation going on in there!
March 28, 20223 yr ^The windows are broken because the place is leased out as a practice ground for stuntmen
March 28, 20223 yr I don't believe they are replacing the windows, but removing the reflective coating (which was coming off of several windows) and resealing them.

March 29, 20223 yr Bit torn by this. I totally get how removing the reflective film will change the look of the building to be more inviting. On the other hand though, the reflective glass is very much in keeping with the International style and I do like it. Also, IIRC the renovation is intended to be sympathetic with the original era. My hovercraft is full of eels
March 29, 20223 yr I might be wrong but I believe that reflective coating was added sometime later. If you look at older pictures of the building when it was new it looks like the glass was see through.

March 29, 20223 yr The silly 2-story building SW is proposing will allow that view to remain I'd assume.
March 29, 20223 yr I'm also sort of torn, on one hand, this building will look much better without the reflective coating. On the other, if I were a tenant, I'd much prefer the reflective coating on the floor to ceiling windows. All the benefits of windows, with none of the downsides.

I believe reflective glass films weren't commercialized until the late 60s and reflective glass coatings until the late 70s -- the back-end of the (non-revivalist) international style. March 29, 20223 yr Clear glass is cool on its surface, but in practice I fear that the look will be ruined by curtains most of the year. So many of these big clear glass windowed apartment buildings end up looking uninviting and disconnected once people lower their curtains. It might look cool upon completion, but this building is going to be occupied and people want their privacy.

Part of the reason you can see TT from the bldg is because there's never any lights on in there.
