The $20 million project at Burke Lakefront Airport at the edge of downtown Cleveland includes installation of a 400-foot stretch of "collapsible concrete." That will slow down or stop an aircraft that's unable to brake on its own. Navigation equipment will be improved and a new taxiway will be built. The cost will be shared by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Cleveland Airport System. Just did some research on it. It has workout facilities, player lockers, trainer facilities, meeting rooms, etc. Definitely not your run-of-the-mill business jet! We send the information ahead of time and they run the passport info prior to arrival. Once on the ground they just make sure the number matches up to the photo and its owner.

According to the FAA ATADS system Burke was the 7th busiest airport in Ohio in terms of flight operations (takeoffs/landings) in 2014, behind CLE, CMH, LUK, CAK, OSU and DAY and ahead of CGF, TOL, YNG, TZR, and MFD.

That would be correct since student pilots are constantly practicing takeoffs and landings, including touch and gos, without ever leaving the field pattern. This would explain the large numbers at OSU.

In the meantime, it's a mistake for the city to not use it as an economic development tool. There is a brand new FBO going in, and the original terminal building sits quiet daily. Make this into a mixed-use jobs-creator: 1. Free landing fees for companies who put their HQ in downtown Cleveland. 2. Free landing fees for a regional upstart boutique airline who wants to service BKL (I'm thinking Porter Air with service to Toronto/Montreal/NYC). 3. Condo buildings in the current terminal parking lot, for those empty-nesters who own single engine private planes (an urban airpark...might be a first of it's kind?) 4. Grants for aviation-related businesses to base at BKL. 5. Grants for an aviation-career related charter highschool (in the spirit of Aviation High). 5. A destination restaurant in the terminal building, complete with rooftop dining with 360 degree views of the lake and downtown.

There could be a market for higher end residential out there. It's waterfront. It's secluded, and yet so very close to all of the amenities of downtown.

If we close it, then what? Watch it become a suburban office park. To me Burke needs it's own leadership. Ricky Smith has enough worries at CLE. If Burke could somehow over the next ten years became like a Back Bay Boston, a dense community by the water then I would consider closing Burke. But that would be a 50 year dream. Keep Burke, market it, upgrade it and concentrate on developing the CBD and the empty lakefront we have now.
