$20M runway improvement project for Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland

CLEVELAND - Cleveland's general aviation airport is getting a runway makeover.

The $20 million project at Burke Lakefront Airport at the edge of downtown Cleveland includes installation of a 400-foot stretch of "collapsible concrete." That will slow down or stop an aircraft that's unable to brake on its own.

Navigation equipment will be improved and a new taxiway will be built.

The cost will be shared by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Cleveland Airport System. An airport spokeswoman says the project is on schedule to be completed in three months

Too many of these for me to even be bothered by Burke.  Every single surface-parking lot should be filled in- along with across the river before closing down Burke should even be considered.

  • There is still Lost Nation and Cuyahoga County Airport - not to mention Hopkins - to service charter flights.   Though, to your point, Chicago closed their lakefront airport and immediately

Been driving past this almost daily - They sure are moving quickly on it. Should have no problem making the three-month time frame.

Port Control looking to move the Fire Dept at BKL from the west of the airport to Aviation High School, at the east end of the airport "due to....initiatives associated with the City of Cleveland's Lakefront Development Program."

Blue Angels Swoop Through Cleveland Today

In preparation for Cleveland's 2014 Labor Day Air Show, two members of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels are stopping by Cleveland this afternoon.

If you're near Burke Lakefront Airport around 4 p.m. today, look skyward, and you could see Blue Angels numbers seven and eight swoop through in their F/A-18 Hornet, before meeting up with air show officials and supporting organizations to hash out the details for this year's event.

That will keep Burke open for a while longer (12 years?) or else the city will have to reimburse the federal government.

Do FEMA funds come with the same restrictions as FAA funds?

I'm tempted to say yes, but I really don't know.

Busy day today at BKL!

I counted no less than a dozen bizjets at the Million Air hangar, including a lovely G5.

Maybe this should be cross-posted in the Cleveland Browns thread ;) ;)

Nice to see investments at BKL. Not sure what is meant by "terminal refurbishing" but would be nice is at least one or two gates with jetways and security screening facilities....

"...Other improvements already scheduled to be done by mid-2016: Upgrades to airport signs at Hopkins and Burke Lakefront Airport, a new waiting area and parking lot canopy system at the Hopkins rental car facility, and terminal refurbishing and construction of a new Landmark Aviation Executive hangar for private jets at Burke..."

I don't know if this is on the Geis property or not.

Geis' proposal would be off to the left.

Correct. This is an independent investment by an aviation company which has had a presence at Burke but is expanding its presence. This is who they are...

I like the building design, but the view of the ramp will be blocked from the Shoreway.    No more gawking at sports teams boarding their private jets.  BTW--did anyone see Mark Cubans gorgeous 757 parked there for the Mavericks on Sunday?    A freaking private 757 for an NBA squad of 13 players!  Must be nice!

Coaches, trainers, support staff, probably some media, maybe front office and family considering it's the Cavaliers, you're probably up to 40 people or so which should be around the capacity of the custom versions.

I heard customs and immigration were deleted from the project to save costs. So folks will  still have use FIS services from the main BKL terminal building. Logistically, how will this work? would a passenger have to disembark at the main terminal, clear customs, then somehow get over to Landmark if s/he needed to use the FBO facilities/services? How would he/she get between the two buildings?

I fly private from time to time including some international legs.  While I have no experience at BKL, at most other FBOs the CIS will just send an agent out to meet the inbound aircraft on the ramp.

Just did some research on it.  It has workout facilities, player lockers, trainer facilities, meeting rooms, etc.  Definitely not your run-of-the-mill business jet!

"Cuban, who purchased the Mavericks in 2000 from Ross Perot Jr., uses his own Boeing 757 to fly the team to various NBA cities. The plane includes a weight room, oversized seats and a facility for trainers to provide medical treatment. Each player's locker includes a personal entertainment system."

I guess inspecting a bag could be done on any surface, but what how are passports swiped/scanned and examined without standard INS equipment/computers at a fixed location?

We send the information ahead of time and they run the passport info prior to arrival.  Once on the ground they just make sure the number matches up to the photo and its owner.

^got it, thanks. makes sense.

Burke Lakefront Airport to get new terminal and doubled hangar space

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Burke Lakefront Airport, the region's top airfield for business flights, is getting a new terminal for private and corporate aircraft.

Landmark Aviation expects to break ground in the spring on the 8,000-square-foot terminal for general aviation jets and turboprops.

Landmark, Burke's "fixed-base-operator," sells fuel, leases hangar space, rents aircraft and provides other services.

A floor plan for the terminal shows a spacious passenger waiting area, a bistro, conference and training rooms, a pilots' TV lounge and "snooze rooms." The building also will have Landmark's office operations and a car rental counter.

Aside from the terminal, the $6 million to $7 million project will add 20,000-square-feet of hangar space, doubling Landmark's hangar capacity at Burke. Landmark will keep its 5,000-square-foot existing terminal, renovating it and leasing it to tenants. No public money is involved.

Must be something going on in town today.  I counted no less than 15 small bizjets of all makes/models outside the Landmark FBO.  Anyone have a scoop?

I think I saw on the news this morning that there is stuff going on for the RNC in 2016.

the newscast showed the Q banner ad boards and the mega-tron all lit up with RNC 2016 start here, finish here.

EDIT...sorry just read about the Republicans--they picked their convention date....but they are at meetings in San Diego...so it probably was not them

What do you mean "fourth busiest?" I imagine the fourth busiest in Ohio is Akron/Canton

^Keep in mind (in case you weren't factoring this in) that Cincinnati's airport is in Kentucky.

Yes, I know that. I ran a report from the FAA's 2014 data for all of Ohio's airports (Belt was using 2013 data). Burke was the 7th busiest in Ohio in terms of total flight operations.

According to the FAA ATADS system Burke was the 7th busiest airport in Ohio in terms of flight operations (takeoffs/landings) in 2014, behind CLE, CMH, LUK, CAK, OSU and DAY and ahead of CGF, TOL, YNG, TZR, and MFD.

My bad--I read their site and it was based on 2008 data.

If I'm not mistaken some flight schools inflate their numbers with repeated takeoffs and touchdowns.

[[removed post -- I found an error in the data--will repost once retabulated.]]

If I'm not mistaken some flight schools inflate their numbers with repeated takeoffs and touchdowns.

That would be correct since student pilots are constantly practicing takeoffs and landings, including touch and gos, without ever leaving the field pattern.  This would explain the large numbers at OSU.

Just curious, does anyone know why Rickenbacker (LCK) is not included in the report?

Just curious, does anyone know why Rickenbacker (LCK) is not included in the report?

It appears that LCK is listed as "Not an FAA facility," as is Wright Patterson AFB and dozens of other small muni or county airports. I'm assuming because it's partly a military airport?

If you forget military, general aviation, and the flight school ops, BKL is the 6th busiest airport in Ohio--including Cincinnati. Closing Burke would be an utter mistake, truly hurting the future of Cleveland.

I agree.  I'm all for freeing up lakefront land for development, but let's face it--if we closed Burke it would take 75 years for developers to fill that space.

In the meantime, it's a mistake for the city to not use it as an economic development tool.  There is a brand new FBO going in, and the original terminal building sits quiet daily.  Make this into a mixed-use jobs-creator:

1. Free landing fees for companies who put their HQ in downtown Cleveland.

2. Free landing fees for a regional upstart boutique airline who wants to service BKL (I'm thinking Porter Air with service to Toronto/Montreal/NYC).

3. Condo buildings in the current terminal parking lot, for those empty-nesters who own single engine private planes (an urban airpark...might be a first of it's kind?)

4. Grants for aviation-related businesses to base at BKL.

5. Grants for an aviation-career related charter highschool (in the spirit of Aviation High).

5. A destination restaurant in the terminal building, complete with rooftop dining with 360 degree views of the lake and downtown.

^ Very insightful. I think there's a plausible argument to be made for opening up access to the waterfront fringe areas of Burke for development. There could be a market for higher end residential out there. It's waterfront. It's secluded, and yet so very close to all of the amenities of downtown.

And don't forget there is this:

http://www.cleveland.com/cityhall/index.ssf/2014/10/clevelands_burke_lakefront_air.html

Also I agree with your points. I have always been a proponent of keeping BKL. If we close it, then what? Watch it become a suburban office park. To me Burke needs it's own leadership. Ricky Smith has enough worries at CLE. If Burke could somehow over the next ten years became like a Back Bay Boston, a dense community by the water then I would consider closing Burke. But that would be a 50 year dream. Keep Burke, market it, upgrade it and concentrate on developing the CBD and the empty lakefront we have now.
