I'd be a terrible host to a visitor... I just don't know what things to show people or do with them!  Touring the city and taking photos of architecture and things is great for UrbanOhio people, but I suspect that most people are not so interested in that.

Anyway, I thought it would be good if people could list what they think are the must-see/must-do things in their city/region/whatever for a visitor who might be there for just a couple of days.  I'd love to be able to refer to this thread and actually have a response if someone were to say to me: "I'm going to Columbus next weekend.  You're from Ohio... tell me what I should do there!"

For Dayton:

  • Air Force Museum
  • The "Aviation Heritage" sites
  • Take at least a quick look at downtown/Riverscape stuff
  • Maybe go to Yellow Springs?

I'm sure there are some other things that might be high priority.

See, I'd love to coordinate tours of Cleveland but I doubt I'd be able to pay my bills just doing that.

Cleveland

After all the people I thought were straight and turned out gay, you are the first to go the opposite way.

See lake erie. Alot of people I know dont understand how big lake erie is. They are used to puny lakes that you can see shore to shore.

Eat all the good ethinc foods/see the ethinic neighborhoods  (little italy/chinatown)

Great lakes brewing company, drink award winning beer.

West side market, just because

Rock hall, just because.

Playhouse Square, just because

Shaker Square, just because.

Almish country.

Show them what a buckeye is.

Show them what real snow is.

Show them what a buckeye is.

The candy, the nut, the resident, the athlete, or the student/alumni?

Seriously?  Interesting.  Well, I'm not gay - not that there's anything wrong with that :).  Hm.  I think I'm off topic.

... Traders World!

By far the L.E. Islands and Cedar Point are two of the greatest attractions Ohio has to offer. (for summertime, anyways)

Depends on the visitor.

Coaster junkie: Kings Island, Cedar Point, Geauga Lake, (hopefully) LeSourdesville Lake, Coney Island, and Wyandot Lake.

Arts & Culture: Numerous cities

Zoos:  All of them, sans Dayton and Akron

Natural: Shawnee/Wayne Forest Region, Serpent Mound, Lake Erie Islands area, Mentor Headlands, Hocking Hills, Yellow Springs area, the Biketrails of Southwest Ohio, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and throw in a rivertown excursion or two.

History:  What part of Ohio DOESN'T have history?  Okay, fine, Stryker.

I think for Cincinnati the observation deck on Carew Tower.

When we lived in Chicago we always took visitors to the top of the Sears Tower or Hancock.  Cincinnati is fortunate to have an observation platform on its tallest open to the public.

who'd of thunk it cdm and not that i'd send anyone there but even stryker, ohio has a history -- lol! (i read something about edgerton once so i figured they did too):

good idea for a thread!

to relax: lake erie islands, beaches, skiing, horse rides, tobbagan run, bike trails, hike, drive the cuy valley and metroparks

to eat: buckeyes, rhubarb pie, trail bologna, cinci chili, dayton 'za, pierogies, tony packo's, barberton fried chicken (braaawk), perch and walleye

offer something fun?: a prize for any visitor who can solve the mystery hill in marblehead or the blue hole in castalia?

visit: the three c's and their attractions, amusement parks, camping in hocking hills, peninsula youth hostel, presidential memorials, rock hall, cosi, wpafb, neil armstrong museum, pro football hof, zoos, museums & amish country...whew, plenty more but it depends what part of the state they'd be in --- i doubt anyone would do a pan-ohio vacation, but i guess you never know maybe this thread would inspire them?!!

Hehehe Stryker hehehehehe!

i know!

i mean come on, everybody knows edgerton is the vacation destination in that region -- and don't get me started on the wonders of tontogany! oh the cornfields. for miles.

For a weekend in Cleveland I always recommend Friday nights for dinner and entertainment.

Entertainment like HOB, Pickwick's, sporting event, or Playhouse Square, and dinner on E.4th or Warehouse District.

Saturdays I recommend downtown sightseeing and Ohio City.

Sundays I recommend University Circle museums and Little Italy.

If someone has the chance to visit more than a weekend I recommend Tremont, Coventry, and Shaker Square. A nice day trip would be Chagrin Falls or Vermillion for a little exposure to small historic Western Reserve towns would be something good to do.

Nobody rep Toledo yet..

-For some reason people are fasinated by the Tony Packos resturant, and like to see the cerlebrity memorbilla (autographed hotdog buns  :?)..The food is good, but overated at the same time...at least to me.

-Jim Jacksons Bar & Grill has talented Jazz artists some from the Chicago/Detroit area who performs live music. Good place to relax.

-Most here already know about Zoo, Art Muesem, Mud Hens etc.

-Maumee Bay Brewing Co., The Docks, all the glass stores.

-The Glass Pavillion is supposably going to be an international attraction when it opens in a couple of months.

-COSI (only if you havent been to Columbus, otherwise its a joke)

-Since Cedar Point is so close Ill throw that in to.

-A few people I know who came back to Toledo recently were impressed by the Glass City Skyway (construction), its gotten so popular they are now giving tours of the construction. So I would recommend this too.

For Cleveland, all of the above, plus a cheesy, but fabulous, photo op'n, surreal people watchin' great time that is the Friday happy hour cruise of the Goodtime III ($10) . Don't let people tell you it is lame..it is awesome: lake, river, bridges, buildings, sunset.

A driving landmark tour of Akron from South to North: Portage Lakes, Firestone CC, Goodyear airdock, Derby Downs, Stricklands Custard ice cream, Goodyear HQ, Y-bridge, architecture in downtown Akron (ie new Library, Quaker Oats hilton, Inventure Ctr, Polymer building, still under construction Art Museum, Civic Theater), Tangiers, Highland Square, Stan Hywet mansion, Swensons burgers, West Point Market, Mustardseed Market, fording Sand Run and end up in the Merriman Valley. From here everything is 5 or so minutes away for these seasonal possibilities if its Summer, go to Blossom Music Center, Spring or Fall go hike at Virginia Kendall Ledges or Cascade/Gorge Ledges, Winter go to Boston Mills or Brandywine to ski or snowboard.  Any season: hop on the Cuyahoga Valley RR either in Akron or Peninsula.

  • The "Aviation Heritage" sites

I'll expand on downtown and recommend the Dayton Art Institute (it's free!) and the Oregon District in particular.

"Swensons burgers,"

Let me tell ya - when I worked in Stow, a former galpal/coworker of mine and I used to love going there for lunch during the summer. I mean come on... they have strapping young bucks wearing snug shorts bounding across hot asphalt to take your order, leaning into your car, and if you order a sandwich they ask... "would you like butter on your bun?" :-D

^lol yea, if you can do all those things in a weekend and actually experience them rather than just see them, then either its a long weekend or you dont sleep.

but oooooooooh, this is a must-SEE topic isnt it.

No trip to Cincinnati is complete with out "experiencing" the Brent Spence Bridge at rush hour.

Make it even more fun by trying to get on I-75 South from the 6th Street Expressway.

That's freakin hilarious! When I moved to Miss. I would call the ATM machines Genie's and people were like "what the f*@k is this guy talking about?" ... lol

Haha, I was cleaning out the glove compartment in my car the other day and came across an old Genie receipt.
