Posted January 16, 20205 yr 170 deaths in the city from pneumonia between in three months from Sept. 29 and Jan. 4? This sounds like a very serious situation. Cleveland Department of Public Health revises stats: 170 deaths associated with pneumonia since late September "As of Sept. 29, there have been 170 deaths associated with pneumonia in the city of Cleveland. There were no flu-related deaths between Sept. 29 and Jan. 4, according to a correction from the Cleveland Department of Public Health....." https://fox8.com/2020/01/15/273-deaths-in-cleveland-associated-with-pneumonia-or-flu-since-start-of-this-years-flu-season/
January 24, 20205 yr Author ^Surprised no one had a response to the above. In any event, other public health concerns: The coronavirus from Wuhan, China had a second US case confirmed, with 63 other persons being monitored. The first case was confirmed in Seattle. The second is closer to Cleveland--Chicago. "CLEVELAND — With a second U.S. case of coronavirus reported in Chicago Friday morning, Ohio and local authorities are taking steps to ensure any cases of the disease are reported, although officials say Cleveland is currently at low risk. Hospitals--Cleveland Clinic is screening patients on intake for possible travel from China, confirmed Andrea Pacetti with the clinic. Airports--A Cleveland Hopkins International Airport official stated that they are following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention alert, which recommends avoiding non-essential travel to Wuhan, China, and provides the following guidance to those planning on traveling to China, and those who have traveled from China in the last two weeks who are exhibiting symptoms....." https://www.cnbc.com/2020/01/24/cdc-confirms-second-us-case-of-coronavirus-chicago-resident-diagnosed.html https://www.news5cleveland.com/news/local-news/local-state-health-officials-taking-steps-to-prevent-coronavirus-report-possible-cases

Is pneumonia contagious? Does this represent some sort of epidemic?

January 30, 20205 yr Author ^cause if you thought you had the coronavirus, you could be dead within a week (and could infect many others around you). So calling for help makes sense. Fever + Cough + having just been in China = sufficient combination of factors to warrant attention/observation/isolation. CDC guidelines right now. First person-to-person transmission confirmed in the US. You should. There's no knowing where this is going. You can't trust the numbers out of China---plus even if they wanted to earnestly test everyone, or really understand the causes of deaths, they don't have the manpower or resources to do so. Read this really sad story about the current state of things in Wuhan: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/02/world/asia/china-coronavirus-wuhan.html Impacts to our health aside, this will be a major impact on the global--and local--economy. There are Cleveland companies that manufacture parts in China. And sell things in China. All kinds of supply chains will be disrupted. And then there is China as a market itself. GM, for example, sold more cars in China than it did in the US last year. Apple does most of its production in China. You think ipones and computers are expensive now? They may just be doubling prices. And on the lower end of things, isn't all the stuff in Walmarts across the US made in China? Regarding the pneumonia post you cited---with 170 deaths---I already posted that---its how I started this thread. If you wanted to minimize the coronavirus, though, you could have said that 600 people have already been hospitalized in Cuyahoga county this winter from the flu. That's also a scary number. Whole schools are closing, like the elementary school in Bay Village. But back to the Wuhan Coronavirus---I wouldn't be so dismissive about it. This whole thing is just getting started. February 4, 20205 yr Author Also, Case has 1505 students from China (grad and undergrad)--13% of all students. How many of them went home for Christmas break? Certainly not all and not all are from Wuhan, but definitely some are or some bumped into others from Wuhan in their hometowns or in airports. Then throw in CSU, BW, Kent State, Oberlin, etc. Besides this there is lots of business travel between China and Cleveland. Edited February 4, 20205 yr by Pugu
February 6, 20205 yr Author Who cares about the coronavirus? We know we can't trust the numbers out of China---they wouldn't lock down 60M people for a couple thousand cases. February 6, 20205 yr Does any of this have anything to do with Cleveland? Or should you start a Coronavirus thread in Current Events?
February 6, 20205 yr Author ^I've tried to keep my comments as they relate to Cleveland---and certainly tracking the progress of cases worldwide- relate to Cleveland as it is only a matter of time til we have cases here. And as well, this thread is for the flu and any other public health issues in the city. But the coronavirus in particular as a public health issue will impact Cleveland's economy, particularly in the manufacturing sector. (PS--thanks for writing--nice to have some kind of response on this thread given the magnitude of what is happening and seeming indifference.) Edited February 6, 20205 yr by Pugu

February 6, 20205 yr Author A new case is being tested in Ohio for coronavirus. (The 2 Miami Univ students were cleared.) They state won't say where in the state the new case is. This only makes sense to me if its a tiny town with one Chinese person and everyone in that town knows he/she just went to China--in which case, identifying the town could be identifying person. But if the case is in any of Ohio's cities, it makes no sense and seems like an unnecessary heavy hand of government. https://odh.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odh/media-center/odh-news-releases/odh-monitoring-pui-2019-novel-coronavirus

All of these are far more important than manic-phobia about this year's version of SARS or Hanta, neither of which were a big deal either except among easily frightened people. I hope you're right. COVID-19 is killing the airlines--as thousands of companies are banning all business travel--which then impacts hotels, restaurants, and all the supporting jobs for these industries (laundromats, food prep, etc.). Major global conferences and events are being cancelled. All this will of course impact the economy of the world, the US, and Cleveland. And of course, there's the health side---this is HIGHLY contagious and far more fatal than the flu. Whole schools are closing--in Washington State and other places and Japan closed all schools til the end of the school year--though that's probably driven by their fear that the Olympics will be cancelled. I'm not the right thing to do is to just dismiss it only as media hype.

March 8, 20205 yr Most, if not all, of the big NEO employers have either banned, or severely restricted business travel of any description. I’ve heard that Swagelok and Eaton have gone further than most and basically stopped all large meetings. It’s a little doubled-edged in that you can say you’re looking after your people, but you’re also saving a ton of money. If mass-level telecommuting becomes a thing, then that is going to be very interesting. It may help drag some of our industrial manufacturing-heritage large employers into the 21st century.
