January 20, 20205 yr If they do leave the Breen Center site, won't there be environmental cleanup necessary there as well?

January 20, 20205 yr Unless there was on-site manufacturing, chemical storage or on-site chemical disposal, it's unlikely that there would be a need for site cleanup.

January 22, 20205 yr WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22, 2020 Sherwin-Williams HQ+R&D site news may wait until next month A curveball thrown at Sherwin-Williams (SHW) regarding its favored research and development (R&D) facility development site has forced the global coatings giant to postpone announcing where it will put its R&D and headquarters (HQ) facilities. That's according to sources who spoke off the record because they are not authorized to speak publicly about SHW's efforts to pursue new HQ+R&D facilities. They said SHW had been preparing to publicly announce the HQ+R&D sites this week. But when SHW's favored site for its 350,000-square-foot R&D facility on Scranton Peninsula turned sour, it began discussions with owners of alternative R&D sites. January 22, 20205 yr yeah its good news. i hope they choose keeping it right where it is and redeveloping around the breen. outside of that easier, safe and sentimental call, kicking off the upcoming opportunity corridor redevelopment seems another wise and forward looking choice. we'll soon find out.

January 22, 20205 yr They just need to build R&D on the Bedrock site. Then, build an underground tunnel to connect the to the HQ ?

You've stated this several times regarding a potential move. Serious question- and I'm not picking, but do you have an affinity for Brecksville? I don't think there are many on this forum who will sympathize with an outer-ring suburb losing any jobs to Cleveland. However, I would be one of those who would dislike a loss of 1,000 jobs from Cleveland to Brecksville. Having said that, I'm hoping for some news soon on the decision. At the regional level, a move to Brecksville wouldn't be a loss. But it would for Cleveland, which has lost enough as it is over the last 70 years.
January 22, 20205 yr I wonder if it is too late to consider these soon to be available 17 acres of fairly clean land here in Euclid.
January 22, 20205 yr ^Central Middle School- yeah that could be torn down and there wouldn't be too many who would miss it. But even that location would still be away from downtown, however. Driving from downtown would be maybe 15 min; the Euclid bus from downtown to that location would be over a half an hour, including the stop at Windemere.

From the article it seems the city and Geis are floating a more accessible mixed plan.

If the site for the R&D is truly up in the air, then I would hope the city is pitching this idea to SHW too and at least talking about what kind of incentives could make it happen. This is all assuming SHW isn’t just trying to get a better deal from the city (which would be smart on SHW’s part and unsurprising). And answered..... On 1/18/2020 at 4:33 PM, KJP said: Because putting the R&D on the Weston lots means building a taller, more expensive tower on the Jacobs lot. It's cheaper to put the R&D elsewhere. The former Glidden property along Berea is still very much an active site owned by NPA Coatings, too. Weston doesn't appear to have anyone in Phase I of the Midland site, but I doubt SW would want to move into someone else's office park-style building. Not sure what potential there would be to takeover the remaining Phase II.

While the region has improved over the past 10-20 years, we're still more "donut" than we should be when it comes to residential and commercial density in the center and then reducing as you move out from that center. So it's not hypocritical to say "stealing" a certain number of jobs from Cleveland to the suburbs is bad but Cleveland stealing jobs from the suburbs is good. It's helping correct the lopsidedness of the region.
January 24, 20205 yr ??Correct. Cleveland is the “brain” of the region, and instead of treating it like an actual head injury, we keep on thinking that moisturizing the extremities will somehow fix the core problem. it doesn’t make any sense, and the continued competition between the “brain” (Cleveland) and the “body” (the 38 other cities that surround it) will just further diminish the entire region. if the Cleveland area was a doctor that was responsible for the management of CTE, we would currently making sure Aaron Hernandez was icing his quads. In order for the body to survive, the brain has to be healthy and functional, not the other way around.

January 24, 20205 yr I’m in grad school. I can only speak in metaphor! But that is to say, Cleveland needs to do everything in its power to lure the R&D to the city limits because the region will suffer if more potential jobs end up in the burbs.
