September 14, 200717 yr I'll pay it if they promise to actually do some community policing instead of sitting at Starbucks on West 6th for an hour at a time on their motorcycles.
September 14, 200717 yr There was a guy pick pocketing women in front of my building yesterday on West 9th, and he was arrested. CPD let him go today because it wasn't a violent crime and the jail is overcrowded. CPD is worthless. You want a jail, its called Lake Erie, throw them in there. Although as an enviromentalist I would be upset about the rising bacteria level. Sorry, I always write on here as soon as I get the news.
September 14, 200717 yr The fact that they arrested the guy speaks well to the CPD I would think? Isn't that sort of standard procedure for non-violent crimes -- arrest, spend a night in jail then go to court/sentencing at a later date?
September 15, 200717 yr I proposed that the Ohio Highway Patrol should be providing assistance to fight crime in Cleveland a few weeks ago. http://www.philly.com/philly/hp/news_update/20070914_State_police_to_patrol_Philadelphia_streets.html Looks like in Philly the PA staties will be patroling the streets there given its crime problems as of late. Its time for them to step up to the plate in Ohio.
September 15, 200717 yr The fact that they arrested the guy speaks well to the CPD I would think? Isn't that sort of standard procedure for non-violent crimes -- arrest, spend a night in jail then go to court/sentencing at a later date? Most people arrested for misdemeanors don't spend any time of jail -- in any city. The only exceptions are those who are arrested for intoxication-related misdemeanors, or those who can't pay 10 percent of their cash/surety bonds. But for most misdemeanors, like petty thefts, domestic violence, simple assault or disorderly conduct charges, the accused is usually released on personal bond. That means you sign a piece of paper and you walk out of the police station minutes after you're brought in. It's standard procedure anywhere, whether you like it or not. September 15, 200717 yr ^i wonder how many misdemeanors the cleveland police process in a night? Any ballpark number KJP, just to really hit home how large our jails would need to be.....
September 15, 200717 yr This is a ballpark guess (and I mean Brookside Park-sized guess), but based on what I see in the 1st and 2nd District brevity reports, I would imagine it's probably 20-30 misdemeanor arrests in a 24-hour period -- per district. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 15, 200717 yr Okay, so that strengthens my point that the CPD did well here by keeping the guy in jail overnight at all.
September 17, 200717 yr Now that I've had time to sit on this, I know that this is probably a typical case and they did their job. What I have a problem with is Jackson declaring his vision to make Cleveland a city of choice. Well how can it be a city of choice if they keep releasing the people causing the quality of life issues that we keep complaining about. On top of that, the city can't even keep the lights on in downtown. We've got rolling black outs. That's a bigger safety concern to me than anything else. Last night, not one light was on between Superior and East 9th on Prospect. Last week the entire warehouse district was dark from 8 PM until past 3 AM. Why do I pay my taxes if they can't even keep the lights on?
September 21, 200717 yr On my way home from work, I saw Frank Jackson and a whole gaggle of people walking down Edgewater near W. 117. Anyone know what was up?
September 21, 200717 yr Is anyone else besides me wondering what a gaggle means? gaggle One entry found for gaggle. Main Entry: gag·gle Pronunciation: 'ga-g&l Function: noun Etymology: Middle English gagyll, from gagelen to cackle 1 : FLOCK; especially : a flock of geese when not in flight -- compare SKEIN 2 : a group, aggregation, or cluster lacking organization <a gaggle of reporters and photographers> 3 : an indefinite number <participated in a gaggle of petty crimes> Now you know (and knowing is half the battle).
September 21, 200717 yr I don't want to call you an idiot, but I thought that was a commonly known word.
September 21, 200717 yr On my way home from work, I saw Frank Jackson and a whole gaggle of people walking down Edgewater near W. 117. Anyone know what was up? It was on the news. That judge who got put on hold while with 911, had a little "take back the streets" stroll

September 21, 200717 yr "take back the streets" from whom on w117 and edgewater? pretty men with darling toy dogs?
September 21, 200717 yr lol! Also I couldn't help but notice that when a judge gets bad public protection service, there is a rally with the mayor present. Wonder what happens when 911 hangs up on the common slob?
September 25, 200717 yr From the PD -- Violent crime up 11% in Cleveland; outpacing the nation. It's got a nice PDF image of the area, so I won't bother copying and pasting the text. It seems like I've seen a lot more patrol cars downtown lately, has anyone else noticed this? During the day as well as in the evening.
September 25, 200717 yr ^ I haven't seen a patrol car downtown in years, at least not in the CBD. That's why I'm never afraid to speed heavily when the opportune arises.
September 25, 200717 yr Yeah, there aren't any patrol cars downtown, especially around Ontario and St. Clair  "That's why I'm never afraid to speed heavily when the opportune arises." Yeah, getting ticketed is the only thing to worry about - never mind peoples' safety (including yours). clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
September 25, 200717 yr ^ I was joking! It was a dark way of making fun of the poor light signal setup downtown... in places like NYC they keep the traffic moving. In Cleveland, it's wait for a green light only to get another red light. Impossible to speed as a result.

Going from Highbees to the Park Building, I clearly had the walk signal. Asshat in the audi decided he didn't want to wait anymore at the podunk stop light, so he decided to try and run me over.

September 26, 200717 yr Alligator strolls Cleveland's West Side Posted by Donna J. Miller September 26, 2007 10:52AM Categories: FYI Cleveland police captured an alligator at 6:30 this morning that was walking around West 41st Street and Memphis Avenue. It most likely was a pet that was released or escaped its residence, officers said. Police called a reptile enthusiast who has helped them in the past to corral and find homes for wayward gators. A woman who lives in the area has contacted police to direct them to a house where she believes the alligator lived. She said in an e-mail, "I have seen the guy outside on the sidewalk playing with that thing. It is huge. That makes me angry - there are tons of kids in that area, waiting for school buses in the morning." The man "was outside on the sidewalk a little over a week ago with the alligator, with a bunch of his friends watching from the porch. He was setting it down, letting it run a little, then picking it up and putting it back where it started. The alligator was whipping his tail and head around and did not look very happy." I know who the woman who called in is... she is very close to me.
September 26, 200717 yr ^I have to be honest- I would have a hard time typing this with a strait face : "I have seen the guy outside on the sidewalk playing with that thing. It is huge. That makes me angry - there are tons of kids in that area, waiting for school buses in the morning."
September 26, 200717 yr If that reporter has been on the job for more than a few years, she's probably come across more bizarre things than this. I know I have! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Bang on his car's hood and yell "I'M WALKING HERE!" maybe if he wasn't doing approximately 15mph from a dead stop, i would have done that. He really didn't seem to care that pedestrians were in the crosswalk (and had the right of way)
September 27, 200717 yr Cleveland's 100th homicide of the year sets pace at worst since 1995 Thursday, September 27, 2007Gabriel BairdPlain Dealer Reporter Cleveland recorded its 100th homicide of the year Wednesday after two men tried to buy drugs with fake money, police said. It took until November to hit the milestone in 2005 and 2006. If the current pace of one homicide every 65 hours holds through the end of the year, the city could post more than 130 homicides for the first time since 1995. ... www.cleveland.com
September 27, 200717 yr I heard some interesting stats today: So far, Baltimore has 300 homicides in 2007 (about 600,000 residents) and Detroit has 400 homicides (with about double Cleveland's population).
September 27, 200717 yr This problem isn't immune to Cleveland. Its a crime culture that has swept america!
September 27, 200717 yr mmm poverty related? Yes, but its only part of the picture. Many of the wealthier southern cities are seeing upticks in murders due to an increase in organized crime. Organized crime is busy setting up shop and making heavy investments in the "future". They go where the money goes.
September 27, 200717 yr well I was trying to make an argument for a social democracy...but anyway even in more wealthy cities it has a lot to do with the gap between the haves and have nots increasing. Are the organized crime people using middle class people for their bidding?
September 28, 200717 yr Are the organized crime people using middle class people for their bidding? I have no clue, the stats don't break things down by class. On the anecdotal side, i know of a guy whose son went to college in Arizona. When he came home to his apartment after class one night, a few masked guys forced him into their van. After a spree to a few ATMs, they almost killed the kid. They told him not to tell the cops or else they'd greet him again some evening at home. The kid has since moved back to Cleveland. When the guy (dad) asked the cops about what happened, the cops said that the organized crime is growing like crazy and they know that they have no prayer against them.
September 28, 200717 yr Here are the 2005 murder rate statstics (per 100,000 people). Last year I think New Orleans was #1 with about 71.0 %. As of Cleveland's 100th murder, this years rate so far is 21.8%. 1. Compton, Calif. 67.1 2. Gary, Ind. 58.0 3. Birmingham, Ala. 44.3 4. Youngstown, Ohio 43.7 5. Richmond, Va. 43.0 6. Baltimore, Md. 42.0 7. Camden, N.J. 41.2 8. Flint, Mich. 40.1 9. Detroit, Mich. 39.3 10. Richmond, Calif. 38.8 11. St. Louis, Mo. 37.9 12. Trenton, N.J. 36.2 13. Washington, DC 35.4 14. September 28, 200717 yr Cleveland's 100th murder was 8 streets from my parents house where I grew up. According to the PD I guess we should be paralyzed with fear. Trying to con drug dealers is probably one of the quickest way to get yourself killed. I'm sorry the guy died and maybe its harsh, but what did he expect to happen if the sellers noticed the money was fake. I wonder how many murders have nothing to do with drugs? What would the murder rate be of normal law abiding citizens who were killed by random violence not drug related in Cleveland. I'm guessing that number is pretty low
September 28, 200717 yr Cleveland's 100th murder was 8 streets from my parents house where I grew up. According to the PD I guess we should be paralyzed with fear. You mean you aren't?!?!?! *Gasp!* Seriously, though, you're absolutely right about the incidence of random murders. Most violent crime is criminal-on-criminal, and a lot of it is drug-related. If you keep your nose clean, so to speak, I don't think there's much to worry about. There are always freak murders (like the fireman one in July,) but those are really rare.
September 28, 200717 yr So it IS poverty related. If the guy had enough money to pay with real money instead of fake, all this would have been avoided. This is your city. This is your city during the war on drugs. Any questions?
September 28, 200717 yr I get the point but why compare two bad situations that have no relation. 100 homicides in Cleveland cry out for protests Friday, September 28, 2007 Plain Dealer Columnist Regina Brett When Cleveland hit homicide No. 100 this week, there were no protests. http://www.cleveland.com/brett/index.ssf?/base/opinion-0/1190971799108200.xml&coll=2&thispage=1
September 28, 200717 yr I get the point but why compare two bad situations that have no relation. Maybe to point out what she sees as skewed priorities? Blacks from around the country are rallying to make sure that these kids are getting a fair trial after beating up some white kid in racially charged circumstances, but not to try to make a change in their own communities where countless young lives are being ended because of black on black crime. The relationship is the contrast in community activity.
September 28, 200717 yr I get the point and agree that we as a community both the black community and larger American community should rally to rid the cities of the rampant crime especially in predominently black urban neighborhoods, where most of these homicides tend to occur. There doesn't seem to be a huge effort to exterminate this problem, maybe because we are used to this type of crime, maybe because we don't care, maybe out of fear. Regardless we need to rally to change the status quo. Also to make the "Jena 6" case seem like nothing more than, "Blacks from around the country are rallying to make sure that these kids are getting a fair trial after beating up some white kid in racially charged circumstances." is rather simplistic. There's more to it and the people rallying for them are rallying to make sure that any person, regardless of race does not get the treatment that those 6 in Louisiana got.
September 28, 200717 yr I think alot of different people are oversimplifying the case for a lot of different reasons. That said, I think the synopsis I gave is fair and makes my point. I am not convinced that they are trying to make sure that any person gets that sort of treatment. They are trying to make sure black people wouldn't, which is a legitimate reason, but different.
