The family of a missing 17-year-old boy feared the worst for 10 days. This morning, their fears were realized.

Gabriel Feliciano, who was reported missing on Sept. 25, was found dead in Brookside Park, near the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. "It appears he died from violence," police Lt. Thomas Stacho said.

Relatives cite abuse in kids' drowning

Parents had history of domestic disputes

The family of Amber Hill offered an explanation Tuesday for why she would drown her two toddler daughters in a bathtub: years of domestic violence finally caused the 22-year-old mother to snap.

But the children's 23-year-old father, Jaime Cintron, was committed to working through their rocky relationship, including learning to control his temper, so that he could be a good father to their children, his family said.

Two people shot at Cleveland high school

Two people have been shot at Success Tech High School at 1440 Lakeside Avenue in Cleveland.

Paramedics were called to Room 310, where one person was shot, and Room 415, where another was shot in the lower chest.

It's the building in the center-right of this pic (blank wall facing the camera):

avedist092507_2.jpg

My sister called me a little bit ago about it. She works at Channel 3 across Lakeside from the school. CNN is also doing live coverage.

Busy news day in Cleveland....  We've also got the train derailment/explosion/fire at the Painesville/Mentor line (CNN is also doing coverage of that). And there was a tanker truck that flipped over and spilled its chemical contents on I-480 at the Cuyahoga-Lorain County line (it closed I-480 from 3:20 p.m. to midnight yesterday). I saw the five-mile traffic backup going home from work. And then you had the idiot who was doing chin-ups on his 11th floor balcony at the Envoy Condos in Lakewood (a block east of where I live). He slipped, fell and died.

Busy. Busy. Busy.

A teenage gunman was killed Wednesday after going on a shooting spree at a high school in Cleveland, Ohio, according to police and media reports. Two adults and three teens were injured, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said.

Wow, sad news.  On an unusual side note I first heard about the Cleveland shootings on BBC World news.

SuccessTech Academy, one of Cleveland's best public high schools with a 94 percent graduation rate, seemed a highly unlikely place for a Columbine-type outburst of gun violence.

But, suddenly, that all changed Wednesday when a student with black-painted fingernails and wearing a Marilyn Manson T-shirt opened fire in the downtown high school, injuring two teachers and three students. Police said he appeared to be targeting both teachers ...

I don't understand why the student who saw the kid putting bullets in the gun didn't alert someone  :wtf:

Student gunman in Ohio warned of attack

By JOE MILICIA, Associated Press Writer

A high school student said Thursday that he and classmates had warned their principal about threats by a classmate who shot and wounded four people before killing himself, and believed the attack could have been prevented.

Everyone is ranting and raving over the "Cleveland" connection, but I'm more frightened by the fact that this stuff happens everywhere. Sad to say, students aren't safe no matter where they go. There is something terribly wrong going on in our society when every year students kill their classmates and teachers, from affluent colleges and suburbs to inner-city schools. Unfortunately, there are always people to blame, so it's easy to ignore the bigger issues.

An interesting note: SuccessTech has a 96% graduation rate.

how dare you try to say anything positive in this thread! Take a page out of the local media's book and focus wholly on the negative.

Absolutely. The media would've said 4 percent couldn't graduate from this place, in the low-standard Cleveland Public Schools!

It looks like they just arrested the brother. They didn't say why. Maybe he supplied the guns?

With all of the national coverage about the school shooting, did anyone catch that idiot, NBC Weekend anchor Lester Holt describing Cleveland as one of Americas most dangerous cities. He said it twice in both of his live reports from Cleveland, Wed. and Thurs. morning. Thanx Lester, I'm sure allot of research went into that statement. Your riveting report is why you will never escape your weekend gig.

he's basing his statement probably on the morgan quitno numbers, which are also flawed.

I have a question and I people in the office keep asking me questions and I don't want to give incorrect    information.  This school is just east of the Galleria, right?    This is in a nice area right?

This school is a specialized high school for gifted and talented children studying technology? This is not a school for troubled students?  Correct?

I don't understand why on the plain dealer they are trying to make it a situation where students in the Cleveland school district are all bad or even if they do excel, they are put down because people in the metro Cleveland area think the Cleveland school districts curriculum is below suburban school districts.  I cant believe that people are calling them "white trash".

Its not an issue of class, financial status or race.  This child had issues and now we'll never know what the root of his problems are.

I'm sure there are people on this board that had were bullied or felt like outcasts. This only made me think of the horrible way I treated kids who were underclass, viewed as "different" or unpopular.  I thank my lucky stars none of them went postal.

When situations happen in the burbs its swept under the rug, but let it happen in the core of the city and everyone is a monster.

I'm hoping for a positive resolution

It's actually northeast of the Galleria. It's across the street from WKYC Channel 3 and the FBI buildings. It's at the edge of downtown, so the area is nothing special. Lots of parking lots, low-level commercial buildings and so on. There's also a large homeless shelter for men about 7-8 blocks east on Lakeside.

"I'm sure there are people on this board that had were bullied or felt like outcasts. This only made me think of the horrible way I treated kids who were underclass, viewed as "different" or unpopular.  I thank my lucky stars none of them went postal."

As someone who had to endure that treatment on a daily basis (below and beyond the typical teen harassment), you're absolutely lucky.

I would suggest that if you have children or younger relatives that you nip any signs of bullying in the bud, and teach them to intervene when possible. It meant the world to me when I was getting bullied and one of the more sensible people in the group would tell the perps to knock it off. It would kill me when teachers would be in earshot and do absolutely nothing - I was blessed with supportive parents and enough sense to know that they wouldn't be worth the jail time. Obviously my situation wasn't the same for everyone.

What bugged me about Thursday's shooting (along with some other bad events i.e. the toxic spill, the Euclid police officer's death, that kid in Lakewood dying) is that with 4 billion dollars in Cleveland projects and an exciting moment in our Sports history, this could have been (and still be) a turning moment in Cleveland's history.  And instead we have the Washington Post and Dr. Phil bemoaning the city and situation while our Mayor looks foolish.

Just another step backwards:(

What did Dr. Idiot Phil say?

didn't watch, just heard school shootings was the topic of the show

didn't watch, just heard school shootings was the topic of the show

Then how could this be a black eye on the city.  Our sister divisions have done reports and nobody said it was a "cleveland" problem.  This was an issue of that one child having compound problems and feeling as though his actions were a last resort.  This should in know way be looked at as the Mayor's fault or problem.  This could have happened in any place at any time.

Yeah at my high school reunion, I apologized to many of those people I treated like garbage.

I've actually had the conversation with my nephews and nieces to be conscience of how they treat other and that teasing people and being a bully is not cool.  Especially in this day and age.

PRESS RELEASE / CLEVELAND, OHIO / OCTOBER 15, 2007

NATIONAL ANTI-BULLYING AWARENESS SPEAKER COMING TO CLEVELAND LUTHERAN SCHOOL

Students are already coming forward and saying that Success Tech shooter Asa Coon was bullied and tormented. This is nothing new. In just about every school shooting incident, the ‘shooter’ was known to be a troubled and often bullied, outcast student.

“Bullying happens in every school. It does not matter it it’s a public or private or even Christian school. It happens, and the consequences are long-lasting to the victim and the school climate as a whole.” This is the message that Broken Toy Project founder and filmmaker Thomas Brown has been delivering to the world since 1992. Brown is a respected national speaker on the subject of school bullying and addresses students, parents and educators with a powerful message and the use of any number of the twelve films he has created on school bullying and other issues that affect children and society.

This coming Thursday, Oct. 18th Brown will be presenting several programs at the St. Mark Lutheran School in Cleveland. Students in grades 3-8, teachers and parents will get an opportunity to hear Brown’s message as well as see his brand new school bus bullying film “Tears on the Highway.” during the day and evening.

I totally picture you as "one of the Heathers", "mean girl number 1" or "head cheerleader we love to hate" :x :x

I absolutely hated people like you - the "popular in" crowd, I hated you people with a passion!  My junior high and high school years were hell.  As a person who was picked on, name called, etc., you people don't know the pain you cause or the lasting affects of that teasing.  Right now I'm pissed, just thinking of the "four eyed lurch" name I was given.

There we're days I didn't want to go to school, because I didn't want to hear any comments and it took me until my junior year of college to get over it all.  Even after that, during my first year working in NYC (13 years after graduating from high school) I had to work with a former classmate on a project and at our first meeting he said, "Don't I know you?  You look so familiar, is your name (my brothers name) or is it (my cousins name)?"  All the anxiety from high school rushed over me like a wave.  I clearly remember, barely making it thru that meeting.

A few meetings later, he asked me why I was so cold.  I asked him if he remembered purposely, extending an invitation to my brother and cousin and not extending an invitation to a big party he and his cousin we having.  Hell, even my cousin in ninth grade went!

People don't realize how hurtful words are.  My parents friends would always compliment me for being so independent and mature for my age, however, none of them realize it was all a front as I was depressed and suicidal. :-(  I can't count the number of times I wanted to jump into the upper shaker lakes, I even had the spot picked jump in at, on Attleboro and South Park, just to give our neighbors something to "talk" about.

Anytime I see kids teasing another kid, I always feel something for that kid and say something to the bullies.  I somehow feel that if I say something, the person being teased, will realize they are not as alone as they think they are.

Couple help police catch robbers before wedding

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

Cleveland police and a couple teamed up hours before their wedding Saturday to catch a group of armed robbers.

Hannah Fritzman and Mike Belsito came to the city's trendy Tremont neighborhood Friday - the night before tying the knot - and had a sawed-off shotgun pointed at them by men demanding their cash and cell phones.

...

http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/cuyahoga/1193215124203730.xml&coll=2

That's unfortunate - I've met Hannah (turns out she's from my hometown) and she's one of the biggest advocates for Cleveland:

Hannah's account of the incident on her blog at cleveland.com: http://www.cleveland.com/weblogs/theview/

I have to say I'd heard about a rash of robberies targeting late-nighters in Tremont, and these jack@sses sound like the perps in most of them. Hopefully they string them up by their #$@&@!

oddly it seems like the advocates are the ones getting hit lately (as opposed to doe eyed visitors)

No way. The best mug shot ever was the one of Chuck Galetti after he was arrested for drunken driving in Strongsville. I couldn't find it on the web, but he had a shit-eating grin and used his index fingers and thumbs to frame his face.

After long prison stay, Silver Burglar returns to Shaker Heights and is nabbed

Shaker Heights -- The silver-haired Silver Burglar has returned to Shaker Heights, years after he made his fortune off city residents...

    • I posted this over in the Cleveland Neighborhoods thread but it is probably more appropriate here.  I've taken crime data from NEOCANDO by neighborhood and graphed it on a map of the city i borrowed.

This was not entirely thought out and while I wanted to make the scales meaningful I used no scientific manner of deciding them.  I arbitarily decided on 7-8 levels of intensity and then chose a suitable range.  Some did not work since a couple areas went over the high end of the scale I chose, (in order that the lower end differences would have significance).  Those were plotted in deepening shades of red that I have chosen not to indicate in the legend.

Mayor's car involved in parking accident

By Karl Turner

December 10, 2007, 7:09PM

A car owned by Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson smashed into two parked vehicles on Clinton Avenue Sunday night, severely damaging them and earning police citations for the unlicensed teen who was driving.

...

http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2007/12/mayors_car_involved_in_parking.html

In addition to a teenager being shot and killed during a robbery, there were two more shootings Saturday in Cleveland. At this point the victims are critical, not dead.

I know that a lot of this crime is criminals killing criminals and that crime occurs everywhere, but it just seems as if more could be done to improve safety in the city. Again I suggest upping police presence by not only hiring more officers (which the city is doing), but also have officers get out of their cruisers and meet neighbors and patrol neighborhoods on foot sometimes, just to let people know the police are out there.

It just seems like the mayor hasn't come out with a plan to attack this issue and this crime, though not near historic highs, is probably still scaring off would be home owners and the developers of those homes. It just seems like a more concerted effort to curb crime is needed and the people to do this are not at the helm.

Forney Mumford's wife, Karen, died two years ago of cancer and his other son, Nathan, has leukemia.

So he has buried his wife, son and may have to bury his other son...

If any of you ever feel like you're having a bad day, week, month or year, remember that there's always someone who is facing tougher times than you.

I think one of the family member lives very close to my parents.  As with all the senseless murders, this is just so sad.

yes the Daymon mumford death is really tragic.. the guy was just working. How can you say the PD went overboard?  Facts are facts.  People ARE getting mugged in these areas.
