the PD, going overboard again.  Painting my neighborhood as unsafe or that the neighborhood(s) bordering Cleveland are less safe than other areas of that suburb.  ugh!  How irresponsible.

There was an article last year (2 years ago?) by the PD written with statistics from the SHPD and basically the fringe areas did have higher crime rates (IIRC).

don't feel bad, happens in every suburb in city across the nation.

I wouldn't go as far as blaming the mayor. He's been around for four months and there's no way he's had time for the intricacies of the many departments he needs to fix. He certainly has atleast spent

  • The good neighborhoods are definitely nicer. More housing is being built in this city than at anytime in probably both our lives. Unless you were born in like the 50s.    I have seen absolut

I dont feel bad thats why move OUT of the suburbs, I feel safe in Cleveland than I ever have at my parents home.

The houses are set to far back from the street and there is too much land between homes.

We had a potential break in when i was in Junior high school and our maid cut the guy with a butcher knife....the found him because he left a trail of blood back to the shaker/warrensville train station.  The perps were from oakwood, solon and bedford.

Those kinds of crimes are always swept under the table, so that the community it takes place in doesn't seem bad and the perps don't get a bad rap.

Yeah, I don't have a real problem with that angle per se, but I agree with MTS that the article was missing any real evidence or info.  Extrapolating one horrible crime and some general neighborhood feelings into a "trend" is lazy journalism at its worst.  Is crime in these parts of inner ring suburbs really getting worse than it had been?  I haven't looked at the data in quite a while, but my recollection is that crime in just about every category is still significantly lower in Shaker today than it was 10 or 20 years ago.  Context is not really one of the PD's strengths.

^that's why they have feagler, to provide context to the 1940s.

I may be wrong, but I'm guessing that the typical poster here is male, adult, probably white, has a degree and a "white collar" job, and lives in either the city or an inner ring suburb.  In other words, very much like McDermott.

If you all want to promote the "new urbanism", dealing with predatory parasites like his attackers has to be a very high priority.

Rumors about this guy coming back to town were a fixture of my youth in Shaker back in the 80s.

A friend of mine with ties to the Shaker PD during that era told me about another Shaker "icon", a guy named Marvin Carner.  He had a habit of leaving errrr...."calling cards".

Happy the police have been able to make so many arrests so fast on this one.  But I guess with such a large group, it wasn't going to be long before someone ratted or panicked or told someone else or whatever.

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson plans to unleash aggressive police officers for daily gun sweeps and restart the gang unit as ways to combat crime.

Jackson cautioned the ramped up efforts could cause more confrontations between police officers and criminals.

You know, a lot of retailers and services have followed the money out to the suburbs. What does it say that the drug dealers haven't been eager to follow?

LeBron James traveling in fast, dangerous lane

LeBron James downplayed his latest traveling violation Monday, but experts said it could have been fatal.

Associated PressLeBron James was ticketed for speeding on Dec. 30.

James' 101-mph drive down Interstate 71 on Dec. 30 was too fast for the highway and his 2008 Mercedes, even though the road was straight and conditions were clear, experts said.

Plain Dealer staffers Jo Ellen Corrigan, Mary Schmitt Boyer and Rich Exner contributed to this story.

^I'm guessing E Rocc means it was merely a legal infraction, not some horrible dangerous stunt that put innocent bystanders at risk (as drunk driving, even at 50mph, would have been).

when I think of all the times I went over 40 mph, hmmmmmmmmmmm

and it's no surprise to us is it that this story got more reads than anything about Iran? I mean, look at the PD's new layout, it's all sports all the time..does Iran ever even make it to the front page? Ok I'm done with my morning rant!

Iran, is that some new Apple product?  Are they making running shoes now?  All I know is that I am not too satisfied with their Iraq, which was expensive and didn't work as advertised.

those backward compatible democracy OS's never work as well as they say.

^Yeah, that was definitely pretty cheap.  Citing Feagler was probably enough to get his point across.

It seemes my neighborhood fire house is/will be out of commission. Not a good idea in my book. The Flats and Tremont are one of only a few places in the city people are moving into to, the firehouses docks our only fireboat, the flats is inherently flammable, and during nightclub hours the streets can be impassible slowing response times down. Couple that with closed bridges, a bridge that may be up to let a ship through, and the closed riverbed road and you could have a potential disaster on your hands. While there are 3 other companies w/in 2 miles of this firehouse-what if the bridges are up? 2 miles means nothing is a freighter is passing under a raised bridge. Somebody should pull out the terror card (does that even work anymore?) to try and save this important station so close to DT. I just found out about this wed. so but it seem KJP is on it:

Funds come with a catch

Thursday, January 17, 2008

By Ken Prendergast

West Side Sun News

In the 2008 budget request, Cleveland city officials said they are seeking enough funding to keep 41 fire companies open and operating. That includes the once-threatened Ladder 42 on Pearl Road as well as the "browned-out" pumper Engine 2 and fire boat Engine 21 at Scranton and Carter roads.

...

www.cleveland.com

This is not the only station that is going to be "browned out" in the near future.  There are a few others that are being discussed as of now.  It IS unfortunate that the city is willing to play games with the safety services, not just the FD, but ALL of them!  If anything, the city should be trying to cut a deal with Wolstien to have a new fire house built in his East bank project, and have a fast response rescue boat purchased.  Right now, the current fire boat CFD has is basically a tug boat.  It is great for pumping water to fire because of the very large capacity pump, but for recue purposes, it is useless because of it's lack of speed AND placement to the mouth of the river.  IMO, a new station should eb built closer to the mouth of the river.  This would give a better protection area for the new construction, while at the same time giving a rescue boat easy and rapid access to the lake.  With all these new mega projects being planned, I don't see why the city couldn't try to hammer out a deal that would help the businesses and residents of these areas.

I obviously don't know squat about this subject, but that said, doesn't the Coast Guard participate in water rescue? I think the fireboat would typically be used to pump water from the river to shore. While down the road having this a fire boat at the mouth of the river makes good sense, I think the current location is appropriate for both the residential and industrial use areas it is so close too.  The Coast Guard boats have very limited fire fighting abilities - mostly geared for putting out recreational boat fires. It is concerning that basic services continue to be cut. Even with a shrinking population, fires will always be a risk. In fact, unoccupied buildings are probably as vulnerable as occupied (esp if squatters are staying there).

It is possible, but somehow I doubt it. Call it bitter experience with covering police news.

No doubt. C'mon men, let's show some friggin' dignity and self-control here.

its also weird 'cause the city told me last summer there was no link between strip clubs and prostitution.

this is nothing new.  It just new "news" to the general public.  Philly, B-More, DC, memphis, Houston, Charlotte, Atlanta, Jacksonville, S. Florida are filled with these types of joints.

the "clubs" in Miami are so successful the gay club and the straight club often time share the same building but different floors.  We did an undercover expose on a "club" on 81 street just west of I-95 in Miami.

This is a job for Carl Monday!

This is a job for Carl Monday!

I doubt it...it might be more dangerous than the library.

Americans in general and (it seems) Ohioans in particular are by nature disinclined towards being told what to do by government.  We have a knack for finding ways around the "spirit" of such laws...and often even around the letter.  Unintended consequences are inevitable.

It's usually best for government to simply butt out.  Unfortunately, that runs against the inclinations of several all-too-vocal segments of our society.

It also runs against the inclination of government itself which is to grow in size and strength if left unchecked (of course that applies to the corporate world too).

Cleveland police might arm themselves with military-style tactical rifles

They may use military-style tactical rifles

Cleveland police could enter an arms race next year to combat criminals who outfit themselves with high-powered weapons.

A Police Department committee is considering plans to purchase military-style tactical rifles and assign them to some officers on the street.

This one is truly tragic. A 33-year-old guy gets killed because he runs into a couple of pissed-off, trigger-happy punks. I hope they electrocute these two worthless f*cks...

I read this in the RTA thread and this one really set me off as well. They miss their target so the take it out on the first person they see. Electrocution is too humane for these punks. :x

This is scary because it appears to be right downtown. I'm not familiar with Superior Pizza:

wow.  thats so sad.

Incredibly sad, and as usual, the f-ckheads over at cleveland.com's comment section acted the bunch of f-ckheads they are, making lots of "hanging around" jokes or calling the man a selfish coward.  I've lost a couple of friends to suicide, and would never think to laugh about someone's death like that or to judge them for how they handle what they feel to be overwhelming problems.

As a caretaker of five youths, what was she doing out at 1-something in the morning?

Is it possible, she arranged for care that evening?  Its just sad.

Turns out she was involved in some criminal activity. The story will come out in Sun in the coming week.

Hope for Cleveland kids through hoops

CLEVELAND -- It's a race against time to save young people from the mean streets of Cleveland.

Some are hoping that hoops will be the saving grace.

So, a new program has started at Thurgood Marshall Recreation Center in the Hough neighborhood of Cleveland.

I guess Club Alchemy is the former Lift/Smart Bar/Whiskey space. Needless to say they never had this kind of problem when I used to go:

From newsnet5.com:

http://www.newsnet5.com/news/15324816/detail.html

3 Men Shot At Flats Nightclub

CLEVELAND -- Three men were shot early Saturday morning in the Flats.

Cleveland police said a man opened fire at Club Alchemy on the East Bank just before 4 a.m. The men were taken to a local hospital. One man was in surgery, and there was no immediate word about the other two victims. Police said they have no suspects.

^ hopefully this will be the nail in the coffin for this place (thank goodness no one actually died) The owner is on thin ice already. essentially he had some sort of a agreement with prosecutors to keep his place out of trouble or else. Part of his agreement was to go to Flats Oxbow meetings so he would understand the impact the club has on the community. I even spoke to the guy asking how he would feel if I opened a club next door to him and people were getting shot (he lives in an inner ring suburb). He said he wouldn't like it.  He was not happy to be there, but was respectful at least.

This is heart breaking. Having worked with foster kids before (I am still haunted by their stories, and we are talking close to 10 years ago now) I am sad to say there are so many kinds in this situation. This might be the right time for me to stump for Issue 15, which will be on the ballot March 4. It is a health and human services levy to support the safety net to keep people from slipping through the cracks (about $2 a month cost) Issue 15 provides protection and counseling for abused or neglected children, foster care and adoption services, and services to make sure young children get proper health care and are prepared for school. Additionally:

• Issue 15 protects critical Health and Human Services for vulnerable children, seniors, seriously injured persons, and others in critical need.

• The County and its partner agencies use these funds for programs and services throughout Cuyahoga County to help people who cannot afford to go anywhere else or who need emergency care.

• Issue 15 protects critical emergency services at MetroHealth Medical Center, like Life Flight, the Severe Burn Treatment Center, Northeast Ohio’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, stroke and crippling injury rehabilitation and poison control services.

One of the things that makes me so proud of our community, it that despite economic struggle, a kind spirit remains. And if you wanted to say what’s in it for me? (shame on you!) -the long term cost down the road for people that do not get interventions is more costly to our community. Now I just want to work on prevention. But that is another thread entirely.
