I'm not sure how accurate this site is, but its interesting to see crime mapped.

it is interesting, but laughably inaccurate. For example just a few thefts reported in all of the Cleveland?

A 35-year veteran Cleveland police officer known by neighbors as "Supercop" shot and killed a man suspected of robbing a KeyBank branch Wednesday afternoon on the near West Side.

The officer, James Simone, 60, was off duty when he happened upon the robbery, chased the suspect and shot him as he attempted to escape.

Missing Cleveland teen found dead at Brookside Park

Of course everyone knows that creditors give higher interest rates to African American with the same credit as Whites

I'm throwing my BS flag out on this one.  There are 0, and I repeat 0, underwriting guidelines that say the following:

Caucasian:  deduct 50 bps

African-American:  add 50 bps and charge additional 1% origination fee

Now, can you find statistics that show that African-Americans have higher interest rates than their white counterparts?  Yes.  That said, I'm willing to bet they also had lower credit scores because that is what primarily drives interest rates, not white, black, asian, cuban, hispanic, greek, etc.

TB1000,

I would prefer this thread not go down that route.

Lest you think that cleveland.com forums have a monopoly on stupid, I offer you this comment from the goamherst.com forum:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Like "Escape From New York"? I am sooooooo tired of hearing about guys in baggy pants and sideways baseball caps who weigh all of 135 lbs. shooting cops and old ladies while they are cooking breakfast.

Then when a cop shoots a bank robber the PD treats him like a criminal!!!!! That guy should have roses thrown at his feet and a statue erected of him in front of the Pro. My only beef with the guy was he could only manage to shoot 5 guys in 35 years!!!??? come on guy apply yourself a little. Im glad Im not a cop in Cleveland I would probably do that kind of volume in 35 mins.

To all you Amherst cops out there....keep on keeping the scum bags out of the city! you are doing an awesome job, cause I know the inmates I work with on a regular basis don't like to come into Amherst. Thats what I call tax money well spent. I think we should buy them each a robo cop outfit to patrol in. (built in mini gun optional)

And as far as "Escape from Cleveland" Ill do my part and play the Snake Plissken part! By the way I tried naming my three year old Snake Plissken Valenti ,but the wife nixed it..she is no fun.

How does one find out about possible gun fire? I was pretty sure I heard about 10 to 12 shots fired in my neighborhood late last night (I live around w.111th and Clifton, I'm not sure if the time was 11PM or later). Sounded like two guns, one firing several times and one firing once (2nd one much louder than the first).

Any ideas?

I'm surprised, Isn't that still a good area (north of the tracks)?

yeah, it is actually. I walk my dog around at pretty much any hour without any worries.

I think it came from over on Detroit possibly. It may not have even been gunfire, but it did sound like that.

It might not be a bad idea to make a report yourself next time it happens. I am guessing that is first district. Maybe you can call the community officer and ask about it.

if it will make you feel any better, I have been passing with in a few feet of 3 shooting crimes scenes by the scooter,  in the last week.

Slavic Villiage shooting where they turned on the paramedics-missed that one by a couple of hours and 2 blocks.

Shooting on w.25th of staff by  auto shop customer (they actually exchanged fire).  Missed that one by probably 15 minutes and maybe 20 feet??

W.111th and Lorain. a couple of hours, and given the location, maybe a couple of feet, again.

thank goodness I wear a helmet.

There probably are reasonable compromises on weapons ownership, but the gun industry makes it impossible.

There's Something About Mary: Unmasking a Gun Lobby Mole

NEWS: Mary McFate was a prominent gun control activist. Mary Lou Sapone was a freelance spy with an NRA connection. They are the same person. A Mother Jones investigation.

By James Ridgeway, Daniel Schulman, and David Corn

July 30, 2008

This is the story of two Marys. Both are in their early 60s, heavyset, with curly reddish hair. But for years they have worked on opposite ends of the same issues. Mary McFate is an advocate of environmental causes and a prominent activist within the gun control movement. For more than a decade, she volunteered for various gun violence prevention organizations, serving on the boards of anti-gun outfits, helping state groups coordinate their activities, lobbying in Washington for gun control legislation, and regularly attending strategy and organizing meetings.

Anti-crime rallies have Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson smiling

Wednesday, August 06, 2008

Margaret Bernstein

Plain Dealer Reporter

In a neighborhood besieged by violent crime in recent months, more than 800 people attended an anti-violence rally Tuesday, putting a broad smile on the face of Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson during his annual Night Out Against Crime.

Young people learned more about the anti-drug D.A.R.E. program, and got a close look at a police helicopter that flew in to Luke Easter Park, one of a half-dozen events held concurrently across the city.

^ I biked by the Steelyard Commons Night Out Against Crime event around 7pm last night, and it was pretty well attended.

I stopped on the way back from my trip to take photos to post, but most of the crowd has dispersed and everyone was preparing for takedown.

Holding rallies against crime is like holding protests against snow.  It's not going to do any good whatsoever.

Political determination and the will to get tough with people who have at least the indirect support of some misguided "activists" is what is necessary.

Ironically, these activists claim to speak for people who are disproportionately the victims of said crime, both directly and indirectly.

I disagree. It's difficult to gauge how much they help, but I have to believe rallies do something to boost community morale. And community is a much more effective weapon against crime that police or political will and determination, I think.

Blaine Griffin, the city's community relations director, said that Luke Easter Park is always busy, and that football, baseball and skating events happen there regularly without being marred by violence. "This district has had its challenges," he said, "but it's also had its successes."

Oh the Luke.....ive played my share of baseball and soccer games there while in high school

Having this thug-protecting judge stay on the bench doesn't help keep the streets safe. She has got to go (and by the way, this highly respected prosecutor attended two of the hearings, despite the judge's lie)...

Case dismissed against teen who threatened neighbor

Posted by Sarena McRae August 19, 2008 22:26PM

Categories: Breaking News

The case against a Cleveland teenager who threatened his neighbor, an assistant Cuyahoga County prosecutor, was dismissed Tuesday.

Neighbors and block clubs in the Tremont neighborhood had been watching the case closely because the victim, Assistant Prosecutor Colleen Reali, handled criminal cases in the neighborhood and surrounding areas.

Reali said Juvenile Court Judge Alison Floyd showed bias against her and other law enforcement officials in her ruling because the boy admitted to the charges.

^unbelievable . very sorry to hear this. I think someone threatening a public servant should receive the maximum for what ever the charge is.

How infuriating. Looks like I'll have to vote for a (opposing) Juvenile Court Judge for the first time in my life.

Floyd and Shirley Saffold Strickland need to go.  I'm tired of the coddling of young criminals in this town.

What does Saffold Strickland have to do with this?  Besides, she's a Common Pleas Judge, not Juvie.

...and she's notoriously easy on certain criminals. i don't like anyone that makes excuses for criminals.  I'm tired of houligans running around in this town, and people being sympathetic towards them.  I want book throwers.

Holding rallies against crime is like holding protests against snow.  It's not going to do any good whatsoever.

Spare me your RW cliches that border on slander.  You are saying the Mayor, Policeman, city councilman and community director are supporters of "the" criminals.

I don't think he is saying that at all.  I think he's saying that some activists indirectly support criminals, and that they pressure our politicians into inaction or impotence in dealing with crime.  I agree with that.

Some documentation would be a nice thing.

I really don't know anything about this case, but it is possible this kid had  more serious charges he was convicted of already, that the lesser harassment charge was dropped. I have seen this happen in a lot in criminal cases.  Kind of like a murderer who picked up a misdemeanor along that way.

He could be "spoken for" in the Juvie system until he is 18.

If this is not the case, then shame on the Judge.

Violent crime down in Cleveland

Saturday, August 30, 2008

Mark Puente

Plain Dealer Reporter

Violent crime is dropping nine months after Mayor Frank Jackson unveiled a tough-sounding plan to aggressively go after gun-toting guys roaming the city's neighborhoods.

Homicides are down 25 percent this year compared with last year, and overall gun crimes are down 10 percent, according to city statistics.

...

Homicide rates are fluctuating across the country. Killings are down in Baltimore and Los Angeles but up in New York City, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Columbus and Washington, D.C.

Four men ransacked and robbed a Westlake home.

WESTLAKE -- Four men broke into a Courtland Meadows home last night and robbed the woman homeowner at gunpoint, while groping her and pointing a gun at her and her 3-year-old son.

Westlake and North Olmsted police responded to 9-1-1 calls at 1:58 a.m. about a break-in on Courtland Meadows, where four suspects, two of them carrying handguns, had forced their way inside a house by breaking a door.

wasn't Santiago at the ribbon cutting of La Copa?

Why yes he was! Pretty ironic, ain't it??

Lawrence Hanson III said he thought, "Not again" when he heard loud noises below his apartment on St. Clair Avenue early Tuesday.

The 65-year-old crept halfway down a set of stairs in his underwear and said he spotted an intruder breaking through a steel doorway between an attached room and a garage.

Cimperman calls spike in burglaries serious; police respond to crimes

A spike in burglaries this summer at offices and warehouses downtown and in the MidTown Corridor is causing worries for business owners and a city councilman.

Brazen bandits are targeting businesses between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., authorities said.

Anytime they send an anthropologist/journalists out into the backwoods provinces they start a "journal" of stories related to that place.  It doesn't mean anything more profound than that.

As for the Downtown/Midtown Crime Spree a 6% increase in burglaries and they're treating it like the end of the world?  Yeah, I want to see burglaries go down, not up, but this is a blip.  Way to make it sound like things are out of control PD, CPD, and Cimperman!

In the weekly brevity reports I get for First and Second Districts, I've noticed a spike in burglaries/B&E's in the last two months. It's not just Midtown.

Well X is right, but effectively, they use that title now any piece that Chris Maag sends them.  Seriously, he has single-handedly increased Cleveland coverage in the Times by many multiples.  Also a cool looking story about house deconstruction in Cleveland in the Sunday Magazine.

^ yeah, the bump up in cleveland coverage is very noticeable. thanks to him and the other nytimes writer with cleveland connections, former free times writer lisa chamberlain.

NYT has a lot of Cleveland stories. Not sure why. I always liked it b/c I could get unsensationalized Cleveland news, since you can't get much locally.

They don't seem so "unsensationalized" any more. They appear to pigeon hole the City more than anything.

actually there have been many positive articles on tech, healthcare, travel and so on. The fact that social and economic issues and realities are presented in a meaningful manner is appreciated.

Have those positive articles been posted on UO? I'd love to read them. I know that they did a nice article on University Circle two years ago. Otherwise, I haven't seen much positive stuff. My friend's friend is a writer for NYT. She's a native Clevelander who has seemingly been in charge of the negative cleveland articles over the past few years. Maybe I'd feel differently if all these articles didn't seem to come from one person. It appears as if one person has an unfair ax to grind and we are the unfortunate recipients while the nation reads yet another negative and slanted piece about Cleveland.

Did you all see Regina Brett's chronicles of her ride-along with Officer Simone?  What do you think, especially all of you that live in the Second District?  Positive or negative?

Regina Brett

Plain Dealer Columnist

Cleveland police officer Jim Simone has been shot twice, stabbed, run over and punched and kicked too many times to count.

I've disagreed with a few things that Regina Brett has written, but that was one of the best pieces I've read about a cop who, despite his fame or infamy, isn't well understood. Thanks for helping me to understand him a little bit.

Tremendous article. With 2 police officers in the immediate family im always praying and wishing for the protection of every officer out there. They have the courage and pride to do what very few people are willing to do. May God be with all the officers who do their best to keep our streets safe.
