October 29, 200816 yr I'm pretty pro city, think downtown is quite safe... but even I do not f with 13th North of Euclid or the 9th to 14th stretch of Euclid after dark. Quite frankly, there's just nothing there, and desolation is a good breeding ground for crime. 13th between Euclid and Chester is the same way. That's why I was talking about the PHS parking garage cut-through with some other forumers in the PHS thread, cause I hate walking up E. 13th.
October 29, 200816 yr Anyone know what went on in the Detroit-Shoreway last night...Detroit and West. 89th apparently some shooting going on.?

October 29, 200816 yr Apparently one of the Cleveland.com idiots is spying on us... Posted by redbrickbarn on 10/29/08 at 11:01AM Wow 1012 Prospect Ave- thats downtown isn't it? I thought downtown Cleveland is supposed to be all wonderful and safe now according to the folks at urbanohio? An inspection of the police logs would prove otherwise!!
October 29, 200816 yr That's not the first time cleveland.comholes made some disparaging comments about urbanohioers.

October 29, 200816 yr Who on our boards would act like that MTS? I for one think it's better to just completely avoid the cleveland.com site 100%. The PD articles are too negative and the comments are ridiculously stupid. I don't know why they allow "comments" on the articles anyway, it's just dumb.

LOOK at the names. ;) I don't have a problem with them having a comments section, they just dont have the proper protocal or staff to run a tech savy paper and to monitor when topics go way off subject. Almost every comment turns into a racial or cleveland vs. the 'burbs issue. It's just a mess.

Almost every comment turns into a racial or cleveland vs. the 'burbs issue. It's just a mess. I think the point of the comment feature on cleveland.com is to facilitate opinions/discussion. If PD staffers monitored the comments, then it could possibly look like censoring what people have to say, to keep things according to what the PD thinks is "publishable" or "okay". Maybe that's why they don't? Otherwise, they would have to post rules/guidelines, etc, and monitor the postings according to those rules. I dunno. Also, I doubt the PD would be the first to disagree with most of these posters. A good deal of them probably agree with commenters' sentiments. In any event, I hate the comments feature, period .. just on the basis that too many of the comments just spew filth and darkness. But that's just me. I don't think I'm being too dramatic, either. Some of those comments are poison to Cleveland's self-image. I would personally rather see it disappear altogether.

We'd be MUCH better off it the comments section didn't exist.

October 30, 200816 yr http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081030/ap_on_re_us/chicago_violence I just wish all of the Cleveland haters knew that violent crimes happen in the most affluent cities as well, in fact, these statistics make Cleveland look safe...This is a legitimate Chicago neighborhood, yet you dont hear Chicago get blasted like Cleveland does
October 30, 200816 yr The fact that violence happens elsewhere should NEVER make you feel better about it happening here....
October 30, 200816 yr I hate violence and crime, it makes me cringe. I just dont think these surburban cleveland bashers realize it happens everywhere, and that complaining that it only happens here doesnt help anything.

The fact is that Cleveland's violent crimes are high, and just because other cities might be more violent doesn't qualm my worries any.
October 30, 200816 yr jpop-tart, you're missing my point. Our crime is high compared to what?? As discussed in the "news and media" thread those that read the PD, think that crimes of any nature all occur in Cleveland. They think or respond, as to say crime happens no other place. Many times suburbanites come to the city to commit crimes, but that is not reported. I bet if the PD started to list crimes in the burbs and exurbs on the front page like they do with Cleveland crimes we'd have a different reaction. I want to point out that the "grass is not always greener" as some folks who read the PD seem to think.

I guess I'm just also understanding where these people are coming from, too. But a lot of it is probably imposed on them by the PD, unfortunately.
November 21, 200816 yr Cameras to keep watch on Public Square; four already in operation Posted by Mark Puente/Plain Dealer Reporter November 20, 2008 21:50PM Categories: Crime, Real Time News Thirteen new surveillance cameras next week will begin watching thousands of people downtown on Public Square. Four of the cameras are recording now, and nine others will be working by next weekend when the holiday display is lighted on Public Square, Safety Director Martin Flask said. ... http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/11/cameras_to_keep_watch_on_publi.html
November 21, 200816 yr Oh! I saw those last night! I thought it was signal prioritization for the healthline or something, lol.
November 21, 200816 yr I'd rather have more police officers or perhaps some kind of formalized volunteer deputee force in that area. I almost got into a brawl with 4 abusive guys (they were harassing/cat calling people, throwing out the n word to each other loudly, and blocking the entrance) at about 6:45pm outside the doors of Tower City, and if they had decided to jump me (luckily they (clearly angrilly) backed away when I told/shouted at them to get the F out of the way after they purposely ignored my original polite request to move aside), it would have gotten ugly very fast Plus, I've heard that these kinds of cameras are ineffective in England, so I'm a little pessimistic as to their effectiveness.
November 21, 200816 yr I don't think much of the camera idea either. I walked from Huron/Prospect to Tower City last night a little after 7 and the people hanging out in the dark doorways on the S side of Huron made me very uncomfortable so I crossed to the other side. In the 10 minute walk I had two people bother me. One guy I passed said, "Hi sweet thing" and when I crossed the street in front of fat fish blue (I jaywalked, sue me), two guys in the bus stop on the other side of the street were yelling something at me, I don't know what so I jaywalked more diagonally towards the corner where the Christmas movie display window was to avoid them. It's not like I'm prancing around in heels and a short skirt, I was wearing winter boots, a very long, big down black coat, a hat and hood and a scarf covering part of my face. I don't get why being a female is enough reason for people to bother you as you are simply walking to the train station. After holding my breath through the usual cloud of smoke in front of tower city to get inside, I was glad to see some police officers (or some kind of officers) stationed inside. I don't know why but it made me feel a little better in case someone was following me or something.

Did you alert anyone in TC or call the police?
November 21, 200816 yr Plus, I've heard that these kinds of cameras are ineffective in England, so I'm a little pessimistic as to their effectiveness. Incorrect, if you saw the Bourne Ultimatum, you witnessed how the authorities use those cameras effectively.

Right, and everything in the Bourne Ultimatum, a Hollywood movie, is just like real life. :)
November 21, 200816 yr I didn't tell anyone about the incident since I had a train to catch and didn't want to deal with it, and the CCTV cameras are ineffective in England (just google it and read some news stories), despite their effectiveness (though somewhat futile) against Jason Bourne.

November 21, 200816 yr A camera will not help if you're in immediate trouble. Neither will a city cop out monitoring traffic somewhere, hoping someone who already got away with a crime happens to drive by. Get out of the car. Fight crime. Defend citizens. Focus on commercial areas that depend on pedestrian traffic. Our law enforcement priorities are really really screwed up IMO.

DISCLAIMER THIS IS NOT AN ATTACK! ::) Have you reported this since then? I personally believe when you say nothing, you're just as much apart of the problem as the people/persons who cause the problem. I feel like when we dont say anything we possibly let the problem continue or the next person to be put in that situation might not be able to defend themselves. If you have the opportunity, please call, you call could prevent this from happening again.
November 21, 200816 yr Reporting anything that commonplace to the CPD often gets you laughed at, by whomever answers their phone. I'm not kidding. I know some excellent CPD officers, but as a whole there needs to be a major attitude adjustment in that institution.

There are police supervisors and your city councilperson. There are ways to report a crime and make sure your complaint is taken seriously and a way to inform police that your concerns complaints are not being taken seriously.
November 21, 200816 yr OMG MTS you cannot lump me in with "you kids," I am older than you! HUSH!
November 24, 200816 yr Youngstown at 15 with fourth highest murder rate per capita and Cleveland at 11. :-o

November 24, 200816 yr I saw this earlier today on Yahoo. Not cool. Now I'm just waiting for people to say that these numbers don't mean anything. Well, I am wondering how they (whoever they are) already have the 2008 crime rankings out, considering 2008 isn't over. I mean, I'm all for refuting stats that aren't true. But I have yet to see anyone refute them with other facts, backed up by sources that are reliably, FACTUALLY telling another story.
November 24, 200816 yr Well, there won't be any reliable 2008 crime stats from a legitimate source until at least the end of the year. That was my point.
November 25, 200816 yr The most dangerous metro areas are kind of interesting (from the same ranking systems) Top 6 Metro areas (most dangerous) #1 Detroit, MI #2 Memphis, TN #3 Las Vegas, NV #4 Flint, MI #5 PineBluff, AR #6 Saginaw, MI For Ohio Metro Areas #52 most dangerous Springfield, OH #62 most dangerous Columbus, OH #70 most dangerous Lima,OH #72 most dangerous Toledo,OH #117 most dangerous Cleveland,OH #145 most dangerous Dayton, OH #156 most dangerous Cincinnati, OH #191 most dangerous Mansfield, OH #289 most dangerous Sandusky, OH http://www.cqpress.com/docs/Metro%202%20-%20Most%20Dangerous_14E.pdf
November 25, 200816 yr ^They rank the safety of Sandusky (and Lewiston, ID?) but not Akron-Canton or Youngstown-Warren? And Pine Bluff, AR is a dangerous place - who knew?
November 25, 200816 yr Sorry I accidentally posted the release of the 2007 rankings instead of the 2008 rankings. I'll make another list for this years and that one includes Akron in it.
