That article really has some biased digs at Cleveland. The article states that the tomb is in the suburbs, but isn't it in fact in the city limits of Cleveland? I know that Lakeview Cemetery has Cleveland, East Cleveland, and Cleveland Heights portions, but I believe Garfield is in the Cleveland section.

I missed the digs.  IIRC, the whole cemetary is in Cleveland, but on the borders.

The fact is we once actually had someone steal "in use" urinal cakes from the bar, so anything can be stolen.

Fireball is very popular among the younger inner city set these days.

I'm wanting to call this a gang initiation.

I highly doubt that anyone in any gang knows or cares about Garfield's commemorative spoon collection.

I wouldn't go as far as blaming the mayor. He's been around for four months and there's no way he's had time for the intricacies of the many departments he needs to fix. He certainly has atleast spent

They also stole several demitasse cups too. Given the proximity to Coventry, I think we all know who did it. ;)

All kidding aside, why the hell was that terrible video linked in the article? Completely unnecessary.

It's so easy for professional criminals to make people see what they want to see

Lake View Cemetery is in all three cities (Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, and East Cleveland).  Only the northern portion (butting up to Superior, not Euclid) is in East Cleveland.  The rest is split about 70% Cleveland Heights, 30% Cleveland.  The border between Cleveland and Cleveland Heights runs south from near Forest Hill Ave. and Brightwood St. to Mayfield Rd.  It is very close to the monument, but I believe it is just barely in Cleveland (as in the border probably just about touches the back of the monument.)

Fireball is popular with ALL youth, not just inner city.

Regrettably, Fireball shows up at all my gatherings of close friends. We all grew up in the Chagrin Valley, attended one of the various top 1-2% public schools there, and have some level of college education. I only have myself to blame, because I got them interested in bourbon, because that's what I always drink, so of course they go out and buy Fireball and American Honey.

^I don't care what anyone says, Fireball is delicious.

I'm happy to say that I don't even know what that is, and no, I'm not googling it, it doesn't sound like something I want to know about.

^ It's just a brand of whiskey. Supposedly tastes like fireball candy. I had to google it.

Anyone over 30 shouldn't drink it, unless you like not sleeping due to horrendous heartburn.

How many murders has Cleveland had this year?  Cleveland's becoming a regular Detroit/St. Louis.  Maybe it was already there.

Cleveland police chief on weekend violence: 'Somebody knows what happened'

http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2014/05/cleveland_police_chief_on_week.html#incart_m-rpt-1

Williams specifically pointed to the block party shooting. He said at least 300 people saw what happened, but hinted that witnesses are not cooperating with police.  "Somebody knows what happened," he said. "They need to give us that information because people are dead, and their loved ones need to know justice will be done."

that sounds like a great hood!

New Orleans has had a terrible weekend of violence as we'll.  22 people shot so far since Friday.

After reading the original report I said to myself "Bet nobody saw anything".  But then I took some hope when mention of the investigation was made.

What a joke.

blows my mind that out of 300 people, someone wouldn't speak up & tell police where to go, who to investigate, what car to look out for, a name of a suspect...  rather than continue to let someone loose on the street that fires into a crowd of innocent bystanders....

That's fear, and also the fact that certain subcultures hold those guys up on a pedestal.  They need to send them to the pen and let them get what's coming to them.

Google "Damon Wells" and/or "Arthur Buford".  It's worse than merely keeping quiet, as you say.

Turns out I know the guy who the cops are seeking for the theft.  White guy, early 30s, from Bedford and one of the worst d-bags that suburb has ever produced.  Which is saying a lot.  So my guess was wrong, though the "what would he know about the collection?" applies.  The junkie angle doesn't make all that much sense, he's a dealer as much as a user.

It's more accurate to say I know people who know him.  He's one of the very few people I've ever had to threaten with intent.

How ironic.  After being so quick to blame this on black youth, it turns out the culprit was a suburban white guy that you "know."  Let this be a lesson, just because a crime occurs in or near the city of Cleveland, one should not automatically assume it was by black kids.  Making assumptions like that are irresponsible.

Who was blaming black youth?

To erocc's credit, he wasn't shy about owning up to his own erroneous speculation.

^^ per the quote in ^, erocc was.  just because he didn't say "black", we all know what he was inferring.  Further, there were more comments deleted, from him, me and MTS, that frankly I want an explanation for.  I generally prefer to stay out of the stupid debates here, but having comments deleted where I feel I am legitimately expressing a valid opinion is unacceptable.

The comments were deleted because they were more appropriate for a discussion via private messaging. I apologize I didn't post something until now but as I've said many times before, the Admins/Mods volunteer our time. If we see a thread starting to derail, it takes less time to nip something in the bud (or lock it entirely) than it does to clean up an already derailed thread and then explain to every individual involved why.

Apparently I missed a thing or few last night.  I'll put it out here because I think private debates are pretty much useless, and it is relevant to crime and safety in Cleveland, as well as the inner ring.  I'm debating even posting it again, so no gripe if it vanishes.

I use words like "subculture" and "inner city culture" for a very specific reason.  This individual, despite looking like Opie Taylor after escaping from the halfway house, personifies that reason.  It's not a code word for race, but emphasis that we are talking about conscious decisions, not biology or genetics.

The problem is what it is.  Excusing or dismissing it for racial reasons doesn't help anything, and can sabotage any efforts to boost the city.

I'm seeing talk on twitter about the S&S monument in public square being vandalized. How terrible. :(

I saw the video and it looks like kids from the suburbs.  As a downtown resident, I could easily do without the drunken suburbanites that come downtown only to get drunk.  Every Friday and Saturday morning, I have to walk by trash thrown on the sidewalks and planters used for all unspeakable purposes.  I noticed today on my way to the Indians, that a front window at Panini's was broken.  I understand that the restaurant and bar owners need these idiots, but as a resident I wish they would stay in their home cities and trash them.

I meant Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Trying to be helpful here.  Not sure if you realize this, but if you make a mistake in a post you can edit (modify) it, you don't have to create a new post.  :)

I'm glad you said that.  Not to turn this into a urban vs suburban situation, but in many city neighborhoods, non residents come in, due harm, then the local residents are left to clean up the mess.  Many non city residents from around the region (see cleveland.bomb) then assume the locals don't care or were the people to do the damage.  My grand parents live off of East Blvd and love the cultural gardens.  People often come there and do things.

Downtown gets people from all over the state, so I can easily see someone from the burbs doing this.  However,  people from the burbs would most likely place the blame on someone from the city.

Regardless of who did this, it's terrible and they should punished to the full extent of the law.  Since this is owned and maintained by the County all residents should outraged!

I can't help but throw in my shameless speculation.

Anyone who has been downtown the past couple of days knows that downtown has been crawling with visiting Detroit fans.  In fact, it seemed like there were more Tigers fans on the streets than Indians fans at times.  Could this be the work of some hyped up out-of-towners energized after their win?  I just have such a hard time imagining my Cleveland brethren desecrating such a monument.

Note: I happen to like Detroit (the city) a lot and this is baseless speculation.

I was just down there, I walked around the whole monument to try to see what everyone is talking about, and saw nothing.

From what I can tell, it was a group of people(probably drunk) climbing on it and taking pictures. One of them probably put too much pressure on a part of the statue and a bronze bar broke off.

I can't help but throw in my shameless speculation.

That's a good point, and probably true.

Though they happened to break off a bronze part, and that has high scrap value.  Did they take it with them?

^not a gang initiation?  Wow.  I'm kinda shocked

Not to be overly technical, but I'm not sure 'vandalism' and 'vandals' are the proper terms....... Unless the knuckleheads climbed the monument with the intent of doing damage

Hence my question about taking the piece with them.  I have seen the video but not heard the sound.  It looks like they left.

If they did not, it was probably an accident.  Even if they did, there's that chance.

2:40am, looks like people messing around after the bars close.  Likely from hotels.

If they took the piece with them, it would be theft.  Either way, a criminal damaging charge would apply, I suppose.

Ever?  Most certainly.  I'm sure if you investigated, you could find more than a few capital murder trials which have been held at the Justice Center.

Of course "ever", but if Cleveland has approximately 25-30 homicides so far this year, how many have arrests been made with suspects charged?  Not asking the question of you, more just hypothetical....

Unfortunately, Cleveland stands at 50 homicides so far this year.

From Zack Reed's twitter:

Zack Reed

‏@zachreed12

With the 3 #homicides which occurred this weekend the .@CityofCleveland now stands at 50 homicides for 2014. Welcome to summer #Cleveland

Ironically, his ward is one of the bloodiest.

Where are our council members speaking out on this?!?!?

You used the word "ever", not me.  But to answer your hypothetical, about 70-80% per this investigation.....http://www.newsnet5.com/news/local-news/cleveland-metro/in-cleveland-youve-got-about-a-30-percent-chance-of-getting-away-with-murder  We have a very good homicide unit compared to many other comparable cities and they don't deserve any unwarranted flack.

The arrest/charged rate is probably higher since often there is not enough evidence of probable cause to get an indictment and/or to get a conviction beyond a reasonable doubt
