I'd assume so, since they are juveniles.  They'll get punished.  They won't get lynched.

We don't even know if they'll get seriously punished.

I recognize the desire to maintain anonymity for juvenile offenders, but we need to be able to know how firm juvy court judges are.

you know what I find interesting...and I don't know...the folks in Tremont can speak to this.  The PD reporters (schaffer and Blackwell) poach the FB Crime Watch pages lately for the scoop(Awesome journalism).  But it makes me wonder is there REALLY an increase of these incidents?  Or since the FB group now is the source for the PD, a lot more is being reported to NE Ohio?  Maybe it has increased.  Armed robbery is very serious, but has this behavior been completely absent in Tremont the past few years or the new FB groups just allow from more of the information to be available?

Is armed robbery par for the course in Tremont and Ohio City during this time of year? It seems there are more reports of it this year, but perhaps residents of those neighborhoods can provide some perspective?

Anyone a member of those groups that lives in the neighborhood?  Just put the question out there.

NEOMG may even write it up themselves.  #itswhattheydo

My understanding is the Tremont crimewatch group on Facebook no longer allows NEOMG employees to solicit information for information and stories; the rationale being they can do their own legwork. As far as the recent robberies, I wouldn't say par for the course - but every couple of years there's been a cluster of incidents, usually perpetrated by one or two people and almost always from outside the neighborhood. I can't recall any of those where the perp wasn't caught - in 1999, two hoodrats stupidly tried to rob the Treehouse, one was put out of our misery, the other went to the clink. Tremont's a high profile neighborhood so it attracts attention - criminals see opportunity, reporters see headlines, etc. It's not isolated to Tremont or Cleveland - for example, Chicago's posh Lincoln Park neighborhood experienced something very similar in summer of 2012.

Was that the case where the place was filled with off duty CPD and the two freelance socialists immediately faced more steel than an Arcelor Mittal hot mill operator?  That belonged on "world's stupidest criminals" and the survivor was charged with his partner's murder.

Another spate of shootings over the past few days.  I'm torn on whether or not the media should be reporting when it's suspected these crimes are part of the current gang war.  Not doing so can make things in town seem more dangerous than they really are.

What a disgusting scoundrel; I hope the put him in the hole for the rest of his life till he rots there... As disgusted as I am with the Cleveland Police these days, I'll give them kudos for staying on the hunt and finally arresting this suspect.  I'll be interested to find out the particulars as to why (at least in this fool's twisted mind) he did this.

This was just posted in 2nd district's FB page:

Please take a moment to read this report from Commander Tom Stacho. This is outstanding news for Tremont and the entire west side!

-----------------------------------------------------------

Sgt. Tommy Shoulders, working with Detectives Cindy Moore and Larry Smith, have put an end to the recent spate of Aggravated Robberies that have plagued the Tremont neighborhood while at the same time helping to solve Aggravated Robberies committed in Cleveland’s First District and the city of Lakewood.

While analyzing crime reports filed across Cleveland’s west side, Sgt. Shoulders determined that the same 2 criminals were likely responsible for a number of robberies being committed. Working with confidential informants and relying on intuition, years of investigative experience and evidence collected from the cases being investigated, Sgt. Shoulders and Detective Moore identified 2 suspects who they were confident were responsible for these crimes.

Upon learning that one of their suspects, 21-year old Brandon Tyrone Durrette, was allegedly trafficking in narcotics out of a home on W.97 St. in Cleveland, Sgt. Shoulders and Detective Moore solicited the help of veteran Second District Vice Detective Larry Smith. Working together, Sgt. Shoulders and Detectives Smith and Moore developed a drug trafficking case against Durrette. Upon securing the evidence they needed, the detectives arranged for the SWAT Team to take this violent felon into custody.

On Tuesday, May 5, Cleveland’s SWAT Team, under the direction of Lt. Ray Kaloczi and Sgt. Jose Delgado, descended on the W.97 St. home from which Durrette and his 14-year old accomplice were operating. As the SWAT stormed the property the suspects were attempting to flee in a beige minivan. Overwhelmed by the SWAT team’s show of force the pair surrendered and were taken into custody. Durrette was subsequently booked into county jail on drug trafficking charges and the 14-year old was booked into the Detention Center on an Aggravated Robbery warrant. At the time of his arrest, the 14-year old was awaiting trial in Juvenile Court on another Aggravated Robbery case. He had been released from juvenile custody and was supposed to be on home detention tracked by an ankle monitoring system. While awaiting trial he cut the ankle monitoring bracelet off and was capias from his scheduled court date.

While processing the W.97 St. scene of this arrest, Sgt. Shoulders and his squad discovered 2 key pieces of evidence that will ultimately doom Durrette and his accomplice. The first was the Drivers License of a woman from Avon, OH who was the victim of an Aggravated Robbery 2 days earlier in Lakewood. This evidence was turned over to Lakewood Detectives who were able to build a case against Durrette and charge him with Aggravated Robbery. The second was the vehicle that the pair was arrested in when arrested.

Upon arresting Durrette and the 14-year old, Sgt. Shoulders and his squad immediately recognized the vehicle that they were in as being similar to one described by victims and captured on video in robberies committed in the First District. Detectives Marie Clark and Jean Norman from the First District Detective Unit were notified of this development and briefed on the investigation. They had been investigating a similar rash of aggravated robberies which had occurred in the First District and were on the verge of cracking those cases when Sgt. Shoulders notified them of his find. The discovery of the beige minivan turned out to be the final piece needed by Detectives Clark and Joyce to solve their cases. Armed with sufficient evidence against Durrette, Detectives Clark and Norman secured an arrest warrant for Aggravated Robbery in his name.

As a result of the collaboration between First and Second District detectives, a violent felon was removed from our streets and our residents and citizens can sleep more soundly. Our evidence will ultimately link these males to nearly two dozen Aggravated Robberies including the Tremont robberies.

On Friday, May 8, 2015, Durrette was formally charged with Aggravated Robbery. Working with Cuyahoga County prosecutors, we will seek charges against the 14-year old and will present a litany of charges to a Grand Jury against Durrette including additional counts of Aggravated Robbery, Felonious Assault, Drug Trafficking and Receiving Stolen Property.

Cleveland Leaders Bypass Prosecutors to Seek Charge in Tamir Rice Case

Community leaders in Cleveland, distrustful of the criminal justice system, said Monday that they would not wait for prosecutors to decide whether to file charges against the police officers involved in the fatal shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice last year. Instead, they will invoke a seldom-used Ohio law and go directly to a judge to request murder charges against the officers.

^I don't understand this, unless they know something the general public does not.  McGinty seems to be very willing to take use of force cases to trial.

^I don't understand this, unless they know something the general public does not.  McGinty seems to be very willing to take use of force cases to trial.

Do they get to cherry pick the judge?  That would explain it.

What I've heard is there was a lot to the initial rumors that the Sheriffs Department investigation did not support filing charges.  That could be another reason.

Having seen the video, one thing that has always been inconclusive to me is whether or not the police used their PA to tell Tamir to put the gun down.  This would rebut the "not enough time to comply" argument.

I know nothing about this 'obscure law' but typically you don't get to pick your judge.  Judges are randomly assigned.

The video quality is not very good.  The only thing that is clear is that Tamir has the pellet gun in his waistband as the police are approaching.  He reaches for his waistband as the squad car pulls up and then he is gunned down.  So, assuming the cops were on their PA telling him to drop the weapon, that action of reaching for the waistband would be a necessary step in complying with that order, no?  It would seem a better defense would be offered if they were not on the PA.

This is one case where I think the public opinion is not so split.  Most everyone I have talked to thinks the shooting was unjustified.  But, just as with the other cases around the country, whether it rises to the level of criminal conduct is a matter of debate.  One thing for certain is the shooter will never work as a cop again.  But what I think is overlooked here is the neglect of the dispatcher.  The City's use of civilian dispatchers needs to be seriously looked at.  It is causing problems consistently.  The 911 call was not communicated properly to the responding officers..... most notably that this was a kid.

The 911 call said he was possibly a juvenile, but Rice was 5'7" and 195#.  Certainly adult size.  He didn't look like some little kid.

^^Agreed.  We cannot start assigning responsibility to dispatch, and with them ultimately the 911 callers who are the source of the information.  It needs to be just the reliable facts.  Description of the suspect and what they are doing.  Black.  Male.  Waving gun.

^^very hard to tell from the video whether he looked like a kid.  The quality is too poor.  But you can certainly be that size and still look like a kid, which he was.  The mannerisms he shows in the video certainly seem like a kid, which is why the caller suspected he was a juvenile.  Regardless, I think the approach tactics of the police is one thing which caused this tragedy.  If in fact flawed, that's not criminal IMO, but certainly cause for concern and a legitimate teaching point.  There was no apparent clear and present danger.  If for nothing else tan their own safety, cops don't just roll up on armed suspects like that.  It created a situation in which split second decisions were made.

^I think trained police officers should be doing police dispatch...... just like trained firefighters do fire dispatch.  Every time the spotlight is put on a 911 call fo Cleveland, it does not look good.  Listen again to the call when Charles Ramsey called about Castro house.  Listen to this call.

I just want to reiterate that this is an officer who had a nervous breakdown during gun range training. For all we know he looked at the kid and saw a fire breathing dragon.

Who knows how long it will take to weed out the unqualified. That's really the lynch pin in all these reforms, I think.

To be fair, that was probably somewhere around the 87,015th call claiming to be Amanda or Gina.  Remember the tone in the cop's voice when he said "this could be for real".

Do you think the city is willing to pay for trained officers to do dispatch?  Some could be guys on disability or desk duty, but I doubt enough.

I think t has less to do with pay and benefits and more to do with taking dispatch out of civil service.  The current City administration has a disdain for civil service.  They want the ability to hire and fire who they please and as they please.  Civilianization is the best way to allow them to achieve some of their goals, including the hiring of city residents who would never score high enough on a civil service test to merit consideration.  I would think this is an issue you particularly would be up in arms about.

Yeah, put that way I do.  I was wondering about their motivations.  I suspect they have a disdain for police officers in general as well.  Steve Loomis being returned is a sure sign the cops think so.

I do know that the dispatchers are supervised by trained officers because I have a personal connection to that...

Guys, I think the Tamir Rice case might need its own thread if we're going to debate it to these details. I understand this is related, and it's an interesting discussion, but let's keep the thread to the topic of reporting incidents of crime and to actual safety, not a debate about a specific case. Which wasn't even really safety related.

I wonder what the police plans might be for possible problems following an NBA Championship celebration?

They seem to really be out of control in other cities.

That's horrible.

So, so sad...random acts of violence can never be understood.

Sounds like a robbery gone wrong rather than a random act of violence.

Cleveland man injured in West Side confrontation with police

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A 22-year-old man was injured as he tried to elude police Sunday morning during a foot chase in which officers fired shots and were fired upon in Cleveland's Detroit Shoreway neighborhood.

---

...When officers showed up, they found a 22-year-old man who matched the description of one of the suspects. When an officer tried to question the man, he ran, Williams said.

Three officers chased the man. During the chase, the man crouched down and pointed a gun at one officer, Williams said. The officer pulled his gun and fired four shots, but none hit the suspect who continued running....

---

As the chase continued, Williams said, an unknown number of people behind police began firing shots at the officers.

...The incident sparked tense moments as a group of bystanders hurled insults at police officers and passed along rumors that stoked anger. Williams said there were stories that police were hiding three bodies in the backyard of a four-story apartment building.

The bystanders, swapping bullhorns, chanted "We need justice" and "Leave us alone."

It's really sad, the people in these neighborhoods that are protesting need the police more than anyone.  How many of them have been victims of crime, violence, drug activity...  Regardless, Chief Calvin Williams seems to be doing a great job of diffusing these confrontations

Cleveland man arrested while making video with fake gun near earlier police incident

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Police arrested a man accused of pulling a fake gun in and out of his waistband while making a video steps from where police shot at a suspect and were fired upon earlier Sunday.

Officers in the area spotted a 23-year-old man walking on West 87th Street near Detroit Avenue about 5:15 p.m. Sunday, waving the gun while an 18-year-old man recorded him, police spokesman Sgt. Ali Pillow said.

As police officers detained both men, a woman in her 30s, who is related to the 18 year old, tried to intervene and became hostile, Pillow said.

I was wondering about that.  Seems pretty obvious these people are agitators that are stirring the pot and distorting the situation to make trouble.

My comments will appear in the Police Use of Force thread in Current Events.

FYI I took some out of towners to the West Side Market on Saturday. Walking back to the car parked on Jay St. I saw four  broken drivers side windows, but my window wasn't broken. I felt lucky. But when I got into my car and lowered the power window, it broke. My mechanic friend said it was likely that someone hit the window and knocked it off track.

Come on Ohio City!! I can't afford to buy a house there but I still want to visit you. I suppose I'll use RTA next  time.

That's what they do.  I was butting heads with them last century, while still in college.

What does a sketchy character look like?

Ohio City is statistically very safe, esp in its core areas.  An any city there's going to be some crime, and Cleveland/Ohio City isn't immune, but to launch into OMG mode is way overblown. ... I'd just wait see if it happens rather than anticipate it in your mind.

A few years ago, I heard W. 25th described as equivalent to Bourbon Street, as in safety dropping off rapidly just a few blocks away.    You also don't want to go too far north and probably not too far south, thouguh in the latter case the transition seems gradual.

I know a lot has changed since, but that may not have (yet).
