June 25, 20159 yr The picture in that article has a man holding up a sign of people killed by police with a weblink below "www.revcom.us" which is the website for communist revolution. I was wondering about that. Seems pretty obvious these people are agitators that are stirring the pot and distorting the situation to make trouble. That's what they do. I was butting heads with them last century, while still in college. Police have allegedly indicated that they believe they may have been setup and drawn into this encounter. Furthermore, it appears probable that the individual shooting at the police was on the upper floor of an apartment building with a rifle as one was recovered from said building though I do not know if charges have been brought.

July 21, 20159 yr Is any of that new since last year? There have always been a lot of guns on our streets, college has been getting more expensive and blue collar jobs more rare for decades, including during the last two decades of declining crime.
July 21, 20159 yr Police slowdowns and social media feuds have definitely lit a spark. My hunch is there are a lot more gun strawman purchasers too; those shops and secondary markets have done very well due to the OBAMA DONE TAKE DER GUNS fears that explode after every school shooting and mass shooting - and we sure have a lot of those in recent years. And when the nuts cool down and see BARRACK HUSSSSEINNNN OSAMA hasn't confiscated every gun in every household, Honeybooboo goes to a gun show or Craigslist and makes some of it back. And the gangs in southside Chicago have one less hurdle to take revenge for Little Mustard's recent death, with Indiana and its GUNS ARE JUST BENIGN TOOLS, BACKGROUND CHECK, MENTAL ILLNESS, WHAT'S THAT? mentality just a short drive away.
July 21, 20159 yr Is it just me or has it been a really bloody summer on Cleveland's east side? So many shootings, its hard to even keep track, more every day, 2, 3, 4 at a time If you look at each incident, the bulk of them fit the pattern of being related to the ongoing war. To some degree, the level of violence leads to a violent mindset otherwise.

Note of caution: there is a ton of randomness in crime, especially in relatively low frequency crimes (homicide) over short periods of time. Most reporters are statistically illiterate and/or lazy, so will report utterly meaningless "murders in March up X% over last year"-type stats, especially when there's a tidy narrative to push. We all need some healthy post hoc ergo propter hoc skepticism when tying purported crime "trends" to any events or social trends. Some of these things may be real factors in short term ebbs/spikes, most probably aren't. I haven't looked into the other cities, but I know the supposed crime surge in NYC is total nonsense. As of yesterday, shootings in NYC were up 2% over 2014, and there were only 17 more homicides in a city of 8.5M (http://www.newsday.com/news/new-york/spike-in-new-york-city-homicides-shootings-despite-summer-anti-crime-push-nypd-data-shows-1.10661563). And 2014 homicides were the lowest since 1963, so regression alone would be expected to lift that number. Crime is going to be up in some places (heavily reported) and down in others (not reported), even if there are no sparks and no over-arching social trends pushing things.

July 23, 20159 yr "where he later expired." Like bad cheese? Jeez who is writing this stuff. I confess I am worried about inadvertently being hit by crossfire now during my morning commute. I know that sounds like scaredy cat suburbanite thinking, but it's a real thought I've had. I look at what's happening at gas stations and convenience stores as I sit at traffic lights next to them in case someone is getting into an altercation. Most of the violence that has been happening seems to be either the domestic variety, or related to gang conflict, which last I heard is going on in this area in a pretty major way. The victims certainly seem to fit the same broad cultural-socioeconomic profile as the perpetrators. That means suburbanites passing through are reasonably safe.
July 23, 20159 yr I know the reasons why. I didn't say someone was going to deliberately shoot me. But it's inevitable people will get caught in the crossfire at some point. It's probably already happened.
July 23, 20159 yr ^It does happen, and it's horrible when it does. But if you're going to worry about things that will inevitably happen to somebody, may I suggest you never drive, swim, turn on your heat, go outside in the rain, or do anything else that kills more people than criminal cross-fire every year. I don't mean to sound harsh, just trying to help you keep your very human fears in proper perspective.
July 23, 20159 yr I point it out not because I have the vapors, which has nothing to do with this thread, but because there does seem to have been quite an uptick in violent crime lately to where it's negatively affecting the perception of the general public. It might be nice to discuss whether or not there is just better and more widespread reporting or, if there is really an uptick, perhaps there's a reporting opportunity being missed that could help allay fears and quantify what's going on so people don't start getting/feeling scared if there is no reason to, or perhaps an opportunity for police to make a statement about what they're doing to contain the problem or something? I'm no fraidy cat, I think most of you know. So if I'm starting to get worried, there are other people worried as well. I love and am concerned for my town and want to see things move forward positively, not sit by passively and watch if this wave means more people avoiding downtown.
July 23, 20159 yr ^Unfortunately, I don't think there's any amount of reporting that can allay the fears of people who deduce crime trends from something as anecdotal as local TV/newspaper crime reporting. Nationally, violent crime is near it's lowest point in about 40 years, as has been widely reported. Yet in surveys, a clear majority of people has "perceived" rising crime for decades: http://www.gallup.com/poll/179546/americans-crime-last-year.aspx The human brain is inherently terrible at assessing real risk, and it's clear to me now that no amount of "counter" reporting can un-do this.
July 23, 20159 yr I'm less interested in national crime trends than more recent and local crime trends. Have there been any studies on those?
July 23, 20159 yr It's why I don't watch the news. I do see crime reports on twitter. But crime news is rarely educational or context-based. Crime news is how lazy reporters fill time on broadcasts and fill space in newspapers. During slow news times, I always turned to the police beat to get *something* to keep my editor off my back. If you get scared driving down the street, then move someplace where you aren't so scared. If you don't want to move or are worried that no such place exists, then you need to get a different perspective on things. I figure if I'm going to die living my life the way I want, then I'm dying on my own terms. I refuse to live my life by someone else's terms or to be afraid all the time. If I am, then I'm just existing and not really alive anyway. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 23, 20159 yr ^Sorry if it sounded like scolding, but this is discussion. Recent crime stats aren not as publicly accessible as they should be in Cleveland, but in any case, they don't give a great sense of current levels of safety either, because violent crime is so sporadic and randomly timed (see my post above). Bottom line: there has been less violent crime per capita (and on an absolute level) in recent years then there was in previous decades. Here's some rough data: http://www.city-data.com/crime/crime-Cleveland-Ohio.html , but only through 2013. Any "perceptions" about rising crime may someday be proved to have been right, but there's no basis for them now.
July 23, 20159 yr Thank you, Strap. My scolding comment was directed at KJP. I don't watch the news either, though I do see their tweets and posts on FB. I have never been one to hyperventilate over general urban crime. But I feel like there is a large and broad upswing. It's too bad there isn't a way to access stats more easily. I would love to be able to say to naysayers, well, really there's no more violent crime than is typical for a summer, when it always increases a little over the winter, or something like that. KWIM? Or, conversely, there are known to be some specific gang activity where violence has been on the increase, so it sounds like there is more crime, but it's really specific to those who are involved in that kind of activity, and the police are doing blah blah blah to track and curb it or whatever. It just happening in a vacuum of one-way reporting of shooting, shooting, another shooting, shooting, and a stabbing with no context makes it slightly upsetting.
July 23, 20159 yr Sorry but I think it's sad to be afraid of doing basic, everyday things. I think all of us have an irrational phobia of some kind. I'm no different. But I also know that if we let that phobia deny us some basic enjoyment of life, then it's something you've got to find a way to deal with or it will eat you up. Our ability to change the outside world is very small. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 23, 20159 yr ^^It's all upsetting, I totally agree, and the media do a horrible job contextualizing it. All the speculative BS about a "Ferguson effect" doesn't help. Unfortunately, even if we had good crime data, I don't think it would necessarily be predictive, meaining it wouldn't really give you a sense whether your drive next week is really any more or less dangerous than it was last year. I think the best thing to tell people is that there are frequent statistical blips of violence (all horribly sad in their own right), but if you look at the big picture, violent crime in Cleveland, like most places, has been at fairly low levels in recent years compared to earlier decades. If you felt OK in 2005, there's no reason you should feel more threatened in 2015. Of course, that's just a longitudinal comparison between Cleveland and its older self. It is still a sad fact that Cleveland has a lot more violent crime than a vast majority of other big cities.
July 23, 20159 yr Cleveland averaged a murder every day in the 1970s. It was one every seven days in 2013. This year is on pace for a much higher rate, as we surpassed 50 murders at the end of June, the halfway point of the year. But you have a better chance of dying from heart disease from the horrible foods Americans eat...... http://discovertheodds.com/what-are-the-odds-of-being-murdered/ The odds of being murdered are relatively low when compared to other possible causes of death. In its Final Data report of U.S. deaths for 2010, the CDC reported assault (homicide) dropped off of the list of the 15 leading causes of death, becoming 16th, following “pneumonitis due to solids and liquids.” Based on the data from the CDC report, deaths due to homicide accounted for less than 1% of all U.S. deaths, with the odds of being murdered in a given year at 1 in 18,989. On the other hand, heart disease, the leading cause of death in the U.S., accounted for 24% of all U.S. deaths, with the odds of dying of heart disease at 1 in 517. July 23, 20159 yr It should be considered that if a confirmed urbanist like R&R is having these sorts of concerns, more typical suburbanites, particularly women, are having them more strongly. That said, it seems like gang violence happens very late at night or in the wee hours of the morning, in more out of the way poor inner city/ring neighborhoods. It’s not much of a safety issue for people other than the residents of those neighborhoods. Which is why it’s such utter barbarastreisand to claim that crackdowns on violent crime are “racist”. The black community is impacted much more than anyone else. On a more practical basis, they don’t do their drive bys around a lot of outsiders, because then there are witnesses that might be less intimidated.
July 23, 20159 yr Thank you, Rocc. I am a representative literally in more ways than one for many suburbanite females who venture into downtown on occasion, so being able to allay fears or point to some statistics can be helpful, if some were available. People ask me EVERY SINGLE DAY for recommendations of things to do and see when they are planning a date or visit to downtown, or when they have friends coming into town. Perhaps known on here, perhaps not, I am also one of the "local experts" for Cleveland on Trip Advisor and we are regularly asked things about crime by people coming into town. I have held that position for many years and while I'm not as frequent and detailed in posting as some of the other LAs on there, it helps to be able to allay fears there as well as those are literally people who are planning travel into CLE who might see news reports and want to know how unusual or typical these things are.
July 23, 20159 yr Cities aren't destroyed by bad elements. They're destroyed by people surrendering to them by fleeing them in fear. Fear only makes crime worse. I considered moving out of my condo in 2005 when, in one year the following events occurred.... A family moved in nearby whose son was encouraged by his mother to nearly beat to death a younger boy who had disrepected her. When police showed up en masse, the assailant went after the police who hose him down with pepper spray. I watched the whole thing from my balcony, about 100 feet away. It was awful. Then a few weeks later, a Philadelphia man wanted for a rape reportedly was staying across the street from my building. A woman fled from there screaming, saying he had a gun and wouldn't come out. So a ton of police surrounded that building and SWAT in full armor were using the alley behind my building as a staging area to talk the guy out. Turns out he gave them the slip, but it was all-night situation. Then another guy a block away in the opposite direction got into a domestic dispute and threatened to blow up his house with a propane tank, so police had to clear a couple of blocks in case he did as threatened. Most people were moved to a nearby school. I relocated to my sister's house for a couple of hours. The guy eventually gave himself up. My car was also broken into twice that summer, as were many others in our parking garage. It was not a good year. But none of my immediate neighbors, most of whom are women, moved because we loved the neighborhood and we wouldn't allow ourselves to live in fear. We're bigger and better than fear, and we're going to win if we don't succumb to the ease of fear. Besides, you can never run from fear. The fear is created by us. It's not caused by others. BTW, my neighborhood has been pretty quiet since that bad year 10 years ago. But I guarantee it would have been worse if I, my neighbors, our spending money, and the neighborhood jobs we support all left. Fear only makes crime worse.
