^pretty remarkable that can happen with hundreds of residents/hotel guest literally right above the action.  those places all should have security systems that would alarm with such destruction.  Hopefully some video nabs the guy.  I imagine it was some angry drunk

Those areas of downtown are loaded with cameras. Hopefully they catch the perpetrator similar to how they caught the drunk vandals of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument.

We need to start gently easing such people towards social services, or at least away from downtown.  Trying to do it quickly before the convention will be harsher, and more to the point appear so.  Appearances are crucial as the left leaning media would love to see the GOP (and by extension Cleveland) look bad, and the right leaning media is sensationalistic.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A male is dead after a daylight shooting on Cleveland's West Side.

 

The victim was struck in the head about 1:30 p.m. where West 82nd Street meets Neville Avenue in the city's West Boulevard neighborhood, police spokeswoman Detective Jennifer Ciaccia said.

 

The victim was dead when police arrived, Ciaccia said.

 

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office is expected to release the victim's identity after his family is notified.

 

Neighbors said they heard two men arguing before gunfire erupted.

 

Investigators at the scene marked more than a dozen pieces of evidence scattered across the intersection.

 

It is unclear if a suspect has been identified or if an arrest has been made.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office announced Thursday that more than 50 people are charged in a series of car thefts, robberies and break-ins across the region.

 

Many of those arrested Thursday morning were juveniles tied to several gangs on Cleveland's West Side, First Assistant County Prosecutor Duane Deskins said at a press conference. The number of defendants makes the case one of the largest ever brought by the county prosecutor's office.

 

"They operated from Avon Lake to Eastlake, and from the shores of Lake Erie to Strongsville," Deskins said.

I saw that - that's completely insane!!  He wasn't even caught in the crossfire...out and out targeted and killed because the killer's wanted to harm his father.

Word from the police, via the Ohio City Crimewatch Facebook page is that the victim was fresh out of jail on drug charges. So yeah, likely more to this story than he was just innocently cycling down Detroit at 3:00 am and got shot.  I take all these reports of people being shot for basically no reason with a grain of salt.  Victims aren't going to tell police they were in the middle of a bad drug deal when they took a bullet.

Lots of break ins the past couple weeks on West Blvd., W102, etc  between Baltic and Clifton mostly in the morning.

I saw it from afar.  From what I saw, it looked like a pretty sizable vehicle fire in the bus lane right outside the E. 9th Healthline stop.

 

It was not a structure fire, thankfully.

Talked to some in that area and East Lakewood who have seen two suspicious guys in a beat up white van. So far nobody has gotten a license plate yet.

Good for Zach pointing this out.  If a west side councilman says it they get pushback.

Yeah, that's what I though.  Just north of Detroit.  Ward 9, if I remember right is the Glenville"ish" area.  This confused me also.

Yeah.  The project is on the west side.  The street is near the cemetary, which it is likely named after.

 

One of the more combative gangs is based around E. 110th and Lakeview IIRC. 

Is it just me or have there been very few homicides lately?  Plenty of routine crime reporting on cleveland.bomb but I've noticed less homicides.

Anyone have eyes on what's going on here?

Due to a fire at Shaker Square, eastbound trains are being held until area is cleared. Westbound trains operating slowly thru area.

They just sent out another that says the fire has been "cleared" so it must not have been a huge deal.

Three suspects face federal charges in Tremont carjackings

 

Two other defendants, Antowine Palmer and Calvin Rembert, are in jail on state charges, though U.S. Attorney's Office spokesman Mike Tobin said more defendants may be charged in federal court.

 

The U.S. Attorney's Office states in the complaint that it is bringing the case to federal court because the stolen cars were manufactured in Oklahoma, Michigan and Japan. The cars entered Ohio through interstate commerce, which is a prerequisite for a federal carjacking charge.

 

The carjackings and armed robberies in Tremont over the summer left many residents on edge, and Cleveland police stepped up their presence as a result. The suspects were rounded up in August.

If these guys are guilty, I hope they get the book thrown at them.  But this is disgusting case of government overreach.  A federal carjacking charge?!  This is what happens when the commerce clause is interpreted so broadly that there is now what amounts to federal police power.  If that constitutes interstate commerce then why have the commerce clause at all?

The "Progressives" have wanted to federalize law enforcement for a long time.  Even "The West Wing" commented on it.

Carjacking was made a federal crime in October 1992, after a voice vote in the House and Senate (i.e., wide bipartisan support in the Dem controlled congress) and signature by the first president Bush.

 

EDIT: to erocc's point, "liberals" are clearly less concerned with federalism issues, and tend to want to fill perceived gaps in state law with federal laws (e.g., VOWA). "Conservatives" tend to pander based on crime fears, especially sensationalist crimes of the day, like carjacking and drugs. At the end of the day, I'm guessing his hypothesis isn't born out by actual voting records. Not tidily so, anyway.

Noah and Ann (a lawyer and a doctor) are good friends of mine. Noah put up quite a fight. You can see the driveway for the UCPD from where the attempted robbery happened.

 

The CPD hung up on Ann as well, so it took three calls and more than 20 minutes to get a response... Not good.

I used to live on Coltman for 5 years.  As mentioned, the UCPD stations literary sits on Coltman Ace at the Euclid intersection.

 

Glad to hear Noah was relatively ok.  I hope they catch these two guys.  Terrible.

 

EDIT: I just asked one of my friends who still lives on Coltman and he said he did hear about the hold up near the church parking lot but not this situation.  Bur he also told me we was once in an altercation on Coltman and walked to the UCPD to report the guy, and was told "call 911" instead.

Kinda troubling for two reasons: 1. If this is true about UC police then that is absurd. 2. Unfortunate that crime is coming into Little Italy?  Isn't that one of the safest areas of the city?  Hopefully this is isolated.

 

If I'm not mistaken, police departments have formal "mutual aid" agreements and it's possible the two departments don't have one.  I recall that at one point UCPD could only detain and not arrest.  Are there similar constraints on their ability to use force?

 

Law enforcement on the Hill used to be largely "private sector", as that influence declines in the area the crime situation will need to be closely watched.

Also, any citizen may do a 'citizens arrest' in the case of a felony, which a robbery is. If I remember correctly, this is why police in Ohio are able to make felony arrests anywhere, regardless of thier jurisdiction. I believe there was a Ohio Supreme Court ruling about this.

 

This story is pretty disturbing. If UCPD didn't have a mutual aid agreement with CPD...that seems like a big issue. Thier jurisdictions would be concurrent anyway, so it would be extremely silly not to have an agreement in place. Additionally, shouldn't thier duty be to investigate whether this 'was just a fight' or not?? That seems pretty negligent to me.

It's just conjecture that there's no mutual aid agreement.  If there isn't, I suspect the officers and agency might have more exposure to litigation (than CPD) in the event that the freelance socialist gets a bruise and chooses to sue.

I may not have read the story carefully enough, but in fairness to the police, it sounds as if the call came in after the attack had occurred and the suspects had fled, not while the crime was in progress.  In that case, a 16 minute response time is not at all outrageous.  I'm always skeptical of a Ed Galek story.  He gets paid to sensationalize things.

As much as this is right there as far as little Italy, its funny how the small distance and disconnect can affect things here.  I know we looked at these very Coltman townhomes and really liked them, but we just had the feeling that you wouldnt be enjoying quite the same sense of safety that Little Italy is know for.  Plus coming from years in D.C., we were done being urban pioneers.

The media would jump all over any street crime on the Hill like stink on modell, because it's perceived as the Last Safe Neighborhood.  But an isolated incident on the fringes is precisely that.

 

Multiple incidents closer to Holy Rosary, or Coventry/St. Rocco's/St. Monica's type problems at the Feast would mean real problems are brewing.  Especially the latter.

The city council safety committee just voted against allocating $1 million from the rainy day fund for police overtime.

I've heard rumors that he and Steve Loomis have developed a "conversation" of sorts.  Nothing substantiated.

 

Reed and Polensek were the only two who voted for it. If I heard correctly though, the ordinance will still go before full council for a vote
