John Gotti’s ex-son-in-law avoids prison in plea deal

CLEVELAND (AP) — A reputed member of the Gambino crime family and former son-in-law of John Gotti agreed to a plea deal that included a large fine but no prison.

Carmine “The Bull” Agnello had been indicted on racketeering and conspiracy charges related to what prosecutors said was a multi-million dollar scam involving stolen cars and scrap metal in Cleveland.

Agnello, 56, pleaded guilty Thursday to an environmental violation and no contest to theft and being a felon in possession of a firearm charges. Agnello could have faced a lengthy prison sentence had he been convicted on the original charges in an August 2015 indictment.

...Prosecutors later alleged that Agnello defrauded the scrap yard of $4.2 million over three years, Cleveland.com reports. The theft charge included in the plea deal states Agnello stole between $7,500 and $150,000 from Ferrous Processing and Trading in Cleveland.

The plea deal concludes what McGinty said in 2015 was an 18-month investigation led by Cleveland police and assisted by a detective from the New York City Police Department’s organized crime unit. Wiretaps on Agnello’s phones intercepted conversations with mob associates in New York and Cleveland, authorities said.

He might have ratted.  But I suspect the constant crowing by law enforcement is counterproductive, as crime hates a vacuum even more than nature does.

^^ My friend in the AP was instructed to get a photo of that guy when he got out of jail, years ago. He saw my friend and told him if he took his picture, he would kill him.

He came back to the office without the shot.

Almost certainly some low on the hierarchy "gang" looking for "protection" money.

Protection rackets are still a thing huh?

Protection rackets are still a thing huh?

I would assume so, or they're trying to bring them back.

Simply smashing a lot of windows with a theft mixed in from time to time makes the most sense in this context.

No doubt,  it's what it appears to be.  I hope they catch who's responsible.

Protection rackets are still a thing huh?

The same thing happened about 6mo ago to some storefronts along Lorain.  Three 14yr old's were finally arrested in connection to the window crimes. They were using slingshots loaded with frozen meatballs.

^ It sounds like the previous incidents were teenage vandalism rather than protection rackets.  It could be likely teenagers now that it's summertime and the have more free time on their hands.  Let's hope this stops before businesses get chased out.

Good news!!

Good morning. Last night there was another break in on Lorain Avenue in the West 70's with a similar MO as the others that have happened on Lorain and Detroit.

The good news is that Second District officers made two arrests. One of the arrests was the person breaking in to 7646 Lorain and the other was nearby and suspected to be on the verge of another B & E on Lorain.

I would ask everyone to keep their eyes open for this activity, as we don't know if the two arrested are the entire group. Big thanks goes out to Commander Stacho and our 2nd District officers for staying on this!

Cleveland Bagel Co., Jack Flaps, Herb'n Twine Vandalized

Jack Flaps and Herb'n Twine are both on Lorain Avenue, where retail window-smashing has occurred for months. The Cleveland Bagel Co. is on Detroit Avenue.

I can attest to this vandalism as well which is why I don't think its rackets - I live on a busy road in Ohio City & within the last week my neighbor's front door glass was smashed but thankfully not shattered and a few days later a window pane on my storm door was smashed.  A few weeks ago while standing in my dining room, I watched a man hop a fence and look into the car windows of every car in the small lot while I was on the phone with the police for a solid 5 minutes.  I don't think he broke into any cars.  Unfortunately this guy took off before the police arrived - so far its all been very petty but irritating nonetheless.

In both instances there was no evidence was left behind for what was used to smash the glass.  Most likely teenagers w/ school being out but this is why I continually call on the fact that more density is needed on the thoroughfares.  Cannot stress that enough.  I also wish there were more cops for foot /bike patrols but I think the density needs to come first as I somehow think that's more likely.

Not mutually exclusive, by any means.  But let's hope that's all it was.

They were bombing up and down Euclid by UH the other day, that may get some attention.

Jackson must be feeling the heat.

I wonder if the guy walking gave the guy on the bike a dirty look or exchanged words.  Who knows, lots of angry people with guns out there.

Man shot in throat in Ohio City

The man told police he walked from downtown across the Detroit-Superior Bridge when a man rode up to him on a bicycle. The bicyclist yelled at the man, jumped off the bike and told the man, "I'll blow your head off," according to police reports.

The bicyclist pulled out a gun and fired a shot that hit the man in the throat under his chin, reports say.

This is terrible. At 6:40 at night? I have stayed after work to go for a run that includes that bridge. And there are often people who ride back and forth across the bridge on their bikes commenting to me. WTAF.

Yeah at that hour and still being light out, there had to be witnesses.

I'm willing to bet it wasn't random.  If both parties are engaged in the drug trade or gangs, they aren't going to expose those connections to the police.  That's why so many of these reports read "So and so was walking down the street minding their own business and someone in a car drove up and shot them."

Stole my thunder. I'd be surprised if this was a random.

I was actually going to post earlier about something I witnessed last year. I was enjoying a nice night out at an outdoor bar area in historic Hingetown. That's when I saw a big guy on the sidewalk get on a bmx bicycle while casually tucking a handgun in his pants.

There are people out there that are not to be f'd with.

I'm fairly confident that there is a LOT more to the story than the victim is saying.

I'd be shocked if it was random.

Keep in mind there's at least one active gang war going on in the county.

I'd be shocked if how the victim described the event is how it actually went down.

I'm willing to bet a lot of people believe that random violent crime won't happen to them. But they do often need the police for lesser things, and when we repeatedly hear stories like this, it probably discourages more people from living/working in Cleveland than the violent crimes....

That hit and run story is just completely awful. That's unacceptable.

Such a shame.  He's 17--will spend less than a year in the Juvi system then be out again restarting his life of crime as an adult.  Hopefully no one gets seriously hurt.

The article says O'Malley is expected to charge him as an adult. I hope they do.

I suppose one way the cycle may be broken is if he is in prison throughout the years in which he can produce a child.  With his history, it looks like he may be headed down that path.

The family and neighbors called the police about the home multiple times throughout the winter and spring.

"The police responded but they kind of played it off like 'What do you expect, you live in Cleveland,'" Berchin-Mullen said.

Vacated St. Rocco Church-owned homes force Roehl Avenue blight, residents say (photos, video)

Those neighbors also left the street last year, after their landlord, St. Rocco Church, decided the residents of the 10 single and multi-family homes it owned on Roehl Avenue and one on W. 33rd Street must vacate.

The church, which owns the homes in trust with the Cleveland Catholic Diocese, first gave tenants notice of considerable rent hikes -- as much as 80 to 100 percent -- over two months.

Some of the tenants moved knowing they could not afford the rent hike. But others rallied against the decision, and how it was handled. Though they had been paying lower than market rate rents, many said they had personally invested in the properties and maintained them, while others accused the church of failing to keep the units up to code.

Sounds like workplace violence but why the mask?

Zanzibar owner shot stepping out of Shaker Square restaurant by masked man, police say

That's so weird. From what I've heard, the owner doesn't even have much to do with day-to-day operations. I think something fishy is going on.

Not that wierd.  It's not uncommon for even hands-off owners to collect up receipts at the end of the day.
