^ The shooting victim appears to have been out of control. By these news accounts he seems like a nice guy who made some extremely poor decisions that night.

Toxicology may be interesting.  During the 70s PCP laced pot would be a suspect.

Edit:  Since I wrote this I've heard some anecdotal evidence that PCP may be making a comeback.

I was just commenting elsewhere that in high crime areas where there are a lot of drug sales, white people in cars are much safer than even local residents, because they are assumed to be buyers and are therefore under the often very assertive protection of whatever gang controls sales in that area.  Then this happens.

CWRU student newspaper perspective on the police shooting in University Circle:

Fatal shooting of Thomas Yatsko at Corner Alley unnerves some

Kevin Smith, Executive Editor • January 18, 2018 • Leave a Comment

The Corner Alley Uptown is a popular spot for students, but the shooting on Jan. 13 of a 21-year old African-American man by Cleveland police has rattled feelings of safety on the area surrounding campus for some.

---

Though not witnessing the incident themselves or hearing of any other violent altercations at the Corner Alley, both Duckett and Lockamy felt less safe going back there after the shooting. “Stray bullets kill innocent people all the time,” said Lockamy.

Cleveland Institute of Art students live in apartments above Corner Alley. The building’s front entrance faces the corner of a busy intersection; across the street are restaurants and more apartments.

On Saturday, off-duty Police Sergeant Dean Graziolli of the Cleveland Police Fifth District fatally shot Thomas Yatsko right outside the doors of University Circle’s popular bowling alley, arcade and bar. Despite efforts from medical teams and nurses, Yatsko died in University Hospitals later that night.

Well, just to play devil's advocate, would the shooting solicit a different response if that fact was changed?

Because of recent violence, claimed by many to be unwarranted, by police against African Americans in Cleveland and nationwide, yes it is important fact to mention ethnicity of the person killed by a police officer.

It is when a white cop (who should have been fired long ago) working in a majority black city kills a black kid at a bar.  I'm sure somewhere in the officers tribal tattoos is a pledge to Steve Loomis.

For the record, I never said that skin color wasn’t an important fact in this case. Just that it’s sad we have been and perhaps always will be at that point where it’s normal to suspect racist motives.

Someone Robbed a Blind Student at Cleveland State University This Week per

A blind Cleveland State University student was robbed inside the main classroom building Tuesday night.

Grotez Simpson, 18, reached into a blind student's back pocket and stole his cell phone, CSU officials reported. Simpson then grabbed the student's backpack and ran off.

Why is the cop's race important?

Why is race not mentioned when descriptions of perpetrators are provided?

Where is BLM?

Check out the D-bag in the article photo.  A white cop in his 50's with tattoo sleeves and 4 chins?    A cop that plead guilty to 8 first degree misdemeanors in 2014 and still kept his job.  In a majority-black city, his race is important.

I don't doubt that the kid was being a drunk a$$hole and needed to be tased and sent to jail.  If he was a white frat boy, that's most likely what would have happened.

Yeah, I would say PCP may be making a comeback.

Isn't that like saying if a man is forcing himself on a woman, better she not struggle or else he might kill her?

^ rape is not the same as theft.  A body is not equivalent to possessions.

And many women don't struggle because they want to survive.

Speaking of the Park Building, the developer of the building posted on twitter recently how crime is getting really bad around Public Square. It was retweeted by a writer at Scene. He said the May Co/ Tilted Kilt Garage in particular was very unsafe. Personally I've dealt with a lot of panhandling there but never felt unsafe even when visiting the (amazing)Taco Bell late at night.

I am curious to hear what others on the forum think.

I haven't been down there in a while, but in general I find that "very unsafe" in any news publication is synonymous with "more than one crime per month". When you consider how many people visit the area on a given day/night I would be more surprised if there wasn't any crime than the opposite.

People have very short memories if they think crime is getting worse around Public sq.

It's a bit tense immediately outside the casino at night.

I saw it but don't know what to make of it, unless some LCN or Russian mobsters who want to get the angle on sports betting here rejected his efforts.

I buy the cocaine part. I just have a difficult time believing that someone with the necessary funds will actually resort to fetanyl - but what do I know

There have been cases of cocaine being "cut" with fentanyl, which certainly wouldn't give you repeat customers, but it does happen.

This made me so mad when these kids roared through my neighborhood, doing stunts, driving on lawns, etc. I wanted to go out to the street with an armload of bricks and see how many I could take out. Instead I called the police. I guess this is what happens when the lawlessness of Cleveland's East Side decides to explore. I'm surprised the organization of this mass criminal ride wasn't picked up on social media....

I can't believe the kids are dumb enough to leave the city of Cleveland and venture into the burbs.  The further they go west the less the cops will worry about offending someone.

I called CPD last year after getting stuck behind them on the Main Ave Bridge.  I told the dispatcher--here's your chance!  You can get them all at once on this bridge...and if they want to escape they'll have to jump!"  Of course no Cleveland Police ever showed up....

I'll bet the kids were surprised when police (Lakewood, Rocky River and Ohio State Patrol) actually started chasing them. They weren't dealing with the lazy-ass CPD anymore.

A similar (albeit smaller) group ran through Flats East Bank on the boardwalk last summer around midnight on a Saturday

I was very upset last night when I saw the riders headed back East with State Highway Patrol and Lawewood police chasing them at high rates of speed.

I have been asking for awhile for a piece of investigative journalism that examines the intersection of the CPD Police misconduct jury awards, the Federal consent decree, and the decrease in safety to local Cleveland residents.

IOW:  It is my understanding that the reason there is a "no chase" order in effect on CPD is because of the jury awards and the consent decree.  What we get as citizens is less safe streets and I think these things should be discussed publicly.

This comment from the city ignores the fact that the riders had to drive through the city in order to get to the E and W suburbs.

"The Jackson administration did not have an immediate comment Monday on the weekend activities. A spokeswoman for Cleveland police noted, though, that most of the activity occurred outside the city and that Cleveland made no arrests. "

The politically hamstrung CPD, in this case.  Lakewood's mayor doesn't have a grandson riding with them.

Look at the officer at the top of this page.  You think he doesn't want to toss some caltrops in front of this bunch?

I was furious. Aside from the awful school system, the excuse-laden wimp of a mayor and the lazy-ass, poorly trained police department are why I will never live in the city of Cleveland. After last night, it now appears that I live too close to the cesspool as it is.

Again, I would like a map that shows where convicted criminals live when they commit crimes. I think that map would shed a lot of light on things.

While many factors started sprawl, crime and schools are the top two things perpetuating it.  Whatever reason is third is a distant third.

Nationwide BikeLife group posts video possibly from Sunday's Cleveland dirt bike and ATV ride

A group that travels around the country documenting dirt bike stunts posted a video from what seems like the Sunday ride that brought more than 100 ATV and dirt bike riders through Cleveland and the west side suburbs.

The Sunday night ride spread across social media with residents of Lakewood, Rocky River and Bay Village posting videos of the riders, often with police cars following them.

Nationwide BikeLife posted a "BikeLife battle" to YouTube on Monday that shows riders going along what looks like Shoreway from the East Side of Cleveland, all the way along Clifton Blvd to Rocky River. Police tracked the pack of riders along most of that route.
