To a large degree this is scaremongering.

When city leaders talk about the homicide rate, they talk a lot about the locations of the crimes and the race, age, and gender of the victims.   The topic they avoid is the the criminal record of the victims.   It seems like a large percentage, perhaps a majority, have recent felony charges and/or convictions.   Typically for trafficking and other offenses commonly associated with gangs and the drug trade.

I just noted I posted this upthread, but it really can't be mentioned enough.  Since some don't seem to wish to.

^ I agree that is is scarmongering and it is difficult to compare one city to another. I get to that conclusion following a different path but this is now our second agreement in a few weeks.  I feel scared.

Body cam video sheds light on Kareem Hunt altercation at Cleveland hotel

I hope this doesn’t just get passed by in the news cycle, it makes you afraid to be a victim of crime in this city. The police

- Waited an hour and a half to interview the suspect

- Arrested the guy who let the victim use his phone to call 911

- Refused to look at the hotel’s surveillance footage

- Turned off the body cam when interviewing the suspect

They didn’t even TRY to conduct an investigation here.

Yep. Who are you more afraid of? Criminals or the incompetent Cleveland police?

Okay...this is ridiculous. That is not how the system should work?!?!

A spokeswoman for the Cleveland Police Department told CNN on Tuesday that since the incident was considered a misdemeanor, the onus would have been on the accuser to go to prosecutors if she wanted to pursue charges.

That's kind of a union reps job.   I'm by no means the most pro union person around, but they serve the same role as a defense attorney and deserve the same slack.

That is not really their job at all. The union rep is supposed to ensure that the employer has adhered to all contractual obligation when disciplining staff.

Sorry to disappoint, but as of ~10 mins ago, the live web cam of Public Square showed more golden retrievers being walked than fighting kids.

I was wondering why there were so more police around public square about 45 min ago while I was out during lunch.  I didn't see any fighting though; there were about 30 kids at the 200 Square corner of Euclid.

listening to police scanners gives a very skewed perspective of reality.

In fairness, the web cam doesn't show the very eastern end of the northern half of the square, so there might have been some action right by the old federal building, which would make sense if this was spilling out of the library area. Things looked pretty normal in all the visible parts though (including the golden retriever- a detail I did not make up).

Unfortunately, there were groups running around Tower City too and one attacked me. I saw one group get arrested near the top of the escalators for the Rapid station, while I was doing a media interview at Starbucks. They were yelling loudly as they got arrested. It really added a special ambiance to the media interview about transit oriented development.... Later, a group of about six ran up the escalator, knocked me over, and I yelled "Jesus Christ!" One of them turned back to look at me and said "What?" I repeated what I said, louder and more angrily, then walked away toward the Prospect exit. The kid blindsided me, knocked me forward but not down, and as I turned to go after the kid, she ran away. I forget something in my office and returned a few minutes later to see the group of six run around the upper perimeter of the Tower City Avenue, between Huron and Prospect. I stopped to watch them and when they saw me, they stopped running and waited. I headed back to the escalator, and after coming down, the group ran down the escalator and past me. I again stopped and one of them walked up to me and said "We cool? We cool?" I said "No, you're not." He knocked the bottle of water out of my hands and ran away. I yelled "Nice job, pu$$y" and went to my office. Maybe five minutes later, as I walked back out, saw a Tower City security guard and starting telling him about the group of six. He interrupted me and said "We got them already." I patted him on the shoulder and told him I appreciated it.

Why not?   I really hope that's not commonplace.   I've been there on the weekend lately, it seemed fine.   But not during the week.

It's not commonplace (ie: it's never happened to me there in nearly 30 years) but I don't need to share everything that happens in my life.

Sounds like a primer for St Patrick's Day parade; fortunately this year's parade is on a Sunday so the odds of racially motivated attacks are decreased this year.  Then again, the Irish are stereotyped collectively as notorious racists so maybe it's all justified.

You're lucky you didn't get popped (punched) and gang pummeled by one these kids.

They were pretty young and skinny and I'm pretty strong and stocky, even for 51.

BTW, I'm Irish. And no the stereotype is not justified.

The attack happened about 7 p.m. Thursday at the parking garage at 630 Prospect Avenue across the street from Quicken Loans Arena, police said.

This vacant apartment block on East 73rd between Euclid and Chester is on fire right now. This area was filled with these buildings, but disappeared as the jobs disappeared.....

^Ugh, hate seeing the few remaining apartment blocks come down in that area. Right next to the new townhouses and a very cool old carriage house, which I hope escape damage.

I guess the current owner was looking to demolish the building.

Oops I mean, what an unfortunate accident.

There are several of these buildings between 90th and 93rd just north of Chester.  Only a few years ago they had people living in them, but the past couple years they have all had their windows removed so that exposure to the elements will make them a hazard and need to be torn down.  They are merely taking their cue from the Clinics example of buying, and neglecting until its a hazard and demolition is approved.   Shame.

There's a development proposed for where those buildings are standing.  It is being discussed in the Upper Chester thread:

CPD apparently just shot a guy at E. 82nd and Gill (Otter Park is a small playground, otherwise largely urban prairie) after he stole a car and ditched it on the RR tracks where it caught fire.

Edit:  some nice time-hopping on the Google street view, in 2009 there's one lone house with two residents seeming suspicious of the Google car, in 2014 some greenhouses.

The gradually improving weather notwithstanding, it seems to me like there’s a lot more cops walking the beat in downtown Cleveland these last few weeks. Anyone else feeling this? I hope it’s a trend that continues, as their general absence, outside of events, was one of the first things I noticed when I moved here 4 or 5 years ago.
