I don't understand why people have such a hard time understanding that there are criminals and gangs throughout this city, and that they are more than capable of causing destruction, harm, and looting especially downtown. This was not antifa, this was right in our backyard.

They used to have to, then the courts ruled that it could not be required.   It seemed like half of certain west side neighborhoods were police and fire.

I know.  It's not a good look.  Let's hope the events of the last week were just an aberration.

I mean West Park and South Hills still have tons of Police and Fire.

This is a bit misleading...  The full story is that the the state in 2006 passed a law forbidding cities from enforcing their otherwise perfectly valid residency laws, and the state Supreme Court upheld the state law.  Courts have never found residency requirements per se impermissible.  Just another Ohio GOP  "federalism for me, not for thee" episode.

^So, are you saying, Cleveland can still have residency requirements for city workers, but is just not allowed to enforce them? If not enforceable, are they still useful?  For example, can the requirements be used to deny someone a job because they don't live in the city? Could raises or other benefits be given to those in the city but not others on the basis of residency?

^Unenforceable, meaning they are a legal nullity. Effectively repealed, even if the city has not formally done so.

Do other cities (outside of ohio) have residency requirements and if so, what is the basis of Ohio supreme court's argument---just state preference? I personally had no issues with Cleveland's residency rules.  By the way--when the law was in place--they did give leniency on residency for cops to be in surrounding suburbs as CPD has issues in recruiting.

^The issue litigated in Ohio was whether the state law conflicted with the constitutional "home rule" provisions. Here's a PD article published on Cleveland.com from 2009 summarizing the decision: https://www.cleveland.com/cityhall/2009/06/ohio_supreme_court_deals_a_leg.html

They are pretty common outside of Ohio, but have been frequently litigated and are on the wane, apparently.  https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/blogs/stateline/2013/03/18/should-public-workers-have-to-live-where-they-work

Joint press conference today with the FBI, DOJ and City of Cleveland today to discuss the arrest of 2 out of town suspects involved in the riots last weekend.   From their Facebook messages, I can't tell if the duo are Antifa, White Supremacists or two guys from Erie that are really really bored and and wanted to lay down their video game controllers.

A friend of mine was beaten up at gunpoint and had his car stolen in Ohio City the other day. I wanted to share his FB post here.

Early 6/3/20. It was warm and quiet. Peace ❤

It's all interrelated.

I'm in pain. Body and Soul. I'm sitting on my porch steps, bleeding, waiting for the Cleveland Police. It's their second visit, now 1:36 a.m. Spent 3.5 hrs at the ER. I'm wholly broken- physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

There is a lot of hate and violence going around, in many directions, a lot of confusion, and hurt. Around 8:15 last night, I was randomly attacked, pistol whipped, and my car was stolen. (*I'm okay..bloodied, sore and badly shaken. It could have been much worse). This is a cry for sanity. It is a lament. A lament for America, for my city.....

We are dumb humans, fumbling around with our precious, broken, hearts.  I don't have the energy or the inclination to HATE. I'm tired. I'm tired and I've had enough...it has to STOP. We need to stop hating each other and unite.

It's all interrelated. We've been duped for so long..and now, with THIS pressure cooker?? Really?
Is anyone surprised? I'm not.

I could easily make a stab at our current (lack of)leadership. Rightfully. But look at the bigger picture:: 400 hundred years of oppression:: The Oligarchy:: Covid:: Stop hating each other:: Stop being distracted and look at the bigger picture:: THEY distract us and set us against each other::

If WE unite, WE can win the fight.

I want to thank Cleveland Police (Officers Vick and Thompson), Cleveland EMS (Toni), and Metrohealth Hospital (Sandra, Sheamus, Sean, Stacy, Pam, Dr. Breitly & Dr. Noeller).

I will not be online much. I need to heal (literally). I need to step back and listen, decipher what the Universe wants from me. Comments welcome, but I will not be responding.

In the end, IF we are to prevail, if "All Lives Matter", we need to care for each other. If there isn't EQUAL JUSTICE for All, there will not be PEACE for All.

Can you dig it?  In the words of Kurt Vonnegut: "God damn it, you've got to be kind."

All we have is love and each other.

It's all interrelated..

Awful...

WTF? This place has been targeted repeatedly since the downtown riot a couple of weekends ago....

Probably some sort of feud between the ownership and someone in the community.

At this point their options are to go full Corbo's or close.

I will never understand how some people couldn't give a damn about driving business/retail out of their own community.

How do you know the people robbing the store are from that community?

How much damage? Was it enough to harm efforts to redevelop the structure?

  • 5 weeks later...

I figured this is the most appropriate thread - as the story relates to safety.. Mods, feel free to move me if necessary -

Nonetheless, I heard quite the (secondhand) story this morning at my gym - and it has a couple of layers, so bare with me...

A couple of weeks ago, a trainer at my gym was fired for refusing to wear a mask, and then challenging his superior to a fist fight when instructed to do so...

From what I've been told, the trainer initially wouldn't wear one, and then began to wear one, but cut holes in it. After several clients complained, management told him he needed to wear a proper mask at all times in the gym and it escalated into a "WE CAN TAKE THIS OUTSIDE BRO" sort of situation - and he was asked to leave for good.

What I found out this morning is that, in solidarity with this trainer, Bobby George pulled his membership and withdrew the membership of all Townhall and affiliated employees, which I'd assume made up at least 5% of the gym's membership - potentially more.

Assuming the information I have is correct, I just cannot understand how this dude continues to make decision after decision to make himself look like a diaper-rashed sphincter.

People who are garbage, when called out on being garbage, tend to double down on being garbage.

any follow up with the old juv justice center?

was it arson from sitting empty?

i hope it wasnt damaged?

its a beautiful structure.

I posted this story on Facebook and the gym's owner responded as follows:

This is not entirely accurate.

1. We don’t comment on former employees. Our former trainer is extremely talented and deserves every chance to make a living. We wish him nothing but the best.

2. All decisions regarding memberships at TAC were made by me. Bobby has done nothing that has negatively affected TAC - much less retaliatory - in response to any decision I made.

3. TH employees have never made up even 1% of TAC memberships.

4. How the f*ck did this become a culture war? Wear a f*ckin mask or stay 6 feet apart.

Who doesn’t love these guys ?..

Hard to see anything done about them when we have a mayor who likens them to street performers.

Get some steel wire tied to a couple of telephone poles. Repeat this setup around the city a few times and they'll stop riding where they don't belong.

I believe it is.  People trailer their bikes here from outside the state to join the lawlessness.  Never mind the fact an 8 year old boy was struck by one of these clowns a few years back at Kerruish Park.  Enough is enough.

It seems like this is becoming an annual event.  I witnessed this myself a few years ago when they were riding down Clifton Blvd in Lakewood - going through red lights, riding on lawns, etc.

I live in Tremont and smaller scale versions of this occur seemingly every weekend.  The one yesterday was... impressive though.  I don't really have an issue with large groups riding around like this.  It's really a powered version of a critical mass bike ride.  I do have an issue with the speed and carelessness that some of the participants display.

I was fortunate enough to be at Steelyard last night when a group of 15-20 of them went about 40 in front of Marshalls/PetCo/Home Depot.

Honestly no idea how they haven't been seriously injured by themselves or a really pissed off dad.

Then there is this.... https://fox8.com/news/cleveland-first-responders-delayed-by-group-of-motorcyclists/

'Cleveland first responders delayed by group of motorcyclists'

"The Cleveland Fire Department tells FOX 8 first responders were delayed trying to get to a jet ski accident because of as many as 200 motorcyclists."

If emergency responders cant even get by and nobody does a thing to stop it, we got a problem.

Anyone see this over the weekend?  When first reported the media said they had jumped out of a plane over downtown Cleveland at 2 am.   I knew this couldn't be right, and as it turns out, they were base jumping off Reserve Square.   The video is brutal!

Witness couldn’t believe his eyes, as man breaks his leg base jumping off an apartment roof and crashing into 19 News station (graphic video)

I spoke with a neighbor who I had to tryto talk off a ledge, who has full intentions of taking matters into his own hands. I guess his lawn got turfed last summer while his granddaughter was playing on it.

Partridge walked out of the store when a man walked up next to him and punched him in the head, according to police.'

So he was beaten to death in broad daylight.... on a main thoroughfare... 200 feet from a highway exit. WUT

^That was at the store on W. 28th and Detroit; I was on my way back east and took the W. 28th entrance to the Main Ave. Bridge over.  There were at least six police cars present.

Sadly Lindas will probably get shut down completely, rather than just cleaned up.  For car-less residents of Lakeview who want to walk and grab a couple items, their options will be further away.

It's a liqour store around the corner from the projects. The only way to clean that corner up would be to close that place down.

To be fair, it sounds like the guy hit him once, knocked him out, and emptied his pockets.  Happened quickly.

Still a nasty crime.

Or put an off duty cop there all the time, at the store's expense.

Then of course we get to hear about price gouging and profiling.
