Fox 8 ran a story today concerning CPD being down 299 officers.  The current academy class only graduated 17 new officers and the next class starting up has only 14.  Last year, @KFM44107mentioned that about 425 were eligible for retirement.  How close to that 425 number actually retired (or will by the end of the year)?  How bad is the attrition as compared the the academy's graduations and transfers into CPD from other departments?  What does the retirement situation look like for 2023?

Not all 425 retired. They're just eligible to. Alot of guys stick around and do the 8 years of DROP. We are losing close to 100 for retirement and less than half that for younger guys leaving to other places. Add in a sprinkle of firings and guys coming back and it's pretty bleak.

From your questions I guess it's safe to assume that Fox 8 did not ask any of them?

No, those were my questions.  However if Fox 8 did ask any of those questions, the police officials ran away from Ed Gallek when he asked about how CPD was going to deal with the loss of officers and hiring more, those questions would not have been answered if they were asked.

Thank you for the information, even though it is bleak.

About a month ago, someone swiped my garbage can (not the blue "recycling" one but the black one.)   Today, the same thing happened to one of my neighbors.    (Beulah Park, on the lake).

Ugh just awful:

My place in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago this happend a lot.  But when I reported it to the city 311 website a new one usually showed up within a week...blue or black and they would mark it with your address.

The CIty of Cleveland is not quite as easy now with the disbanding of the 311 line, but if you have the wherewith-all to hunt down the number for Division of Waste, call them, and request a new can, they will get one out within a week.    Same goes for damaged cans--you can leave the bad one in your driveway and they will swap it out.

They are numbered.   I put a note on our neighborhood watch page to record the numbers, my neighbor did it, and hers got traced.

I watched a police chase on Franklin yesterday... the fleeing car ran over two roundabouts at high speeds, nearly hitting other cars, before the police cruiser gave up and bailed. It went from about 54th to 58th St, heading west.

Was absolutely wild.

I was at work when it happened. It almost flooded half our detective cars.

I’m no civil engineer, but I would not be walking around the rim of that crater so casually.
We crossed that intersection on foot yesterday, walking down to do the St Pats 5k. Glad to learn no one fell in when it happened.

My hovercraft is full of eels

As an add on to this, the road did not collapse. They've been working on the street all week. There was already a square hole cutout there to do work on the water lines. The pipes clearly weren't properly put together or having them exposed to the  conditions burst them.

As an edit: the road did collapse a few hours after they shut off the break. Lol.

What sure sounded like gunfire heard in my neighborhood around 3:30am.  2-3 CPD units rolled up on the bus stop on the south side of Lakeshore just east of E. 156, a stop that often appears to be a "hangout" during the day.   EMS and CFD rolled up a bit later, everyone was gone by 5:30.

This is beyond aggravating. This park was just fixed up.

As the previous administration refused to deal with them, they feel entitled now.  It will take a very serious effort to deal with them after all this time, and some people could easily end up getting hurt.  I'm not sure the current powers that be have the gumption.

So yesterday  I'm on Lakeside (the one that meets E. 156th at Lakeshore) heading south at the traffic light.   There's a guy waiting at the light northbound.   Another car goes up on the curb, squeezes between him and the light support, and comes around to block it in.   Two or three guys get out and spray the car with automatic fire.  The blocking car takes off, the two shooters bail north towards the lake.  Oh yay.  Saw the whole thing, of course I told CPD everything I saw.   No plate or nothing, but one guy went running south as well, from the car that was shot.

From Councilman Polensek via Cindy Barber, one dead, one shot in the leg, and the cameras caught the whole thing.

Classic gang hit is what I thought, but I was at the Boardwalk late and heard they got in an argument over a vacuum cleaner at the car wash on that corner.   FFS.

Three takeaways:

1)  Cameras may seem creepy at times but they can be a good thing.

2)  What I call "diss culture", the idea that any perceived disrespect justifies such a response, is about the most toxic thing there is.

3)  If it made the news at all, I didn't see it.

Glad you're okay, also not surprised. I've been on homicide scenes where people have been killed for less. It almost always over something that most of us would find trivial. Alcohol is always involved.

Just be aware most stuff doesn't make the news, and if it does like half the facts are wrong.

Because it's an open investigation and the police aren't gonna comment, they usually go to the crazy neighbor who says they saw it all and just put whatever they said as the story.

Yes, active investigation.    I went out to do a couple things yesterday morning, and when I got back the homicide detectives were next door.   Spoke to the one about what I saw, and they went looking for stuff tossed in yards or the field.   Probably the lake as well.

Looked like carbines, possibly Uzi.

I was across Lakeshore at the light waiting to go south, so I was a reasonable distance away.

I could have sworn the car went east, but he went west according to the cameras.   Eyewitness testimony being unreliable.

The latest from Polensek is the victim was 15 and from Warrensville Heights.   The car was stolen.

It was covered on cleveland.com

IN the span of two weeks, nearly 30 children have vanished in Cleveland, sparking huge concern from a local police chief who said he hasn't seen anything like this in his 33-year career.

As many as 27 children have been reported missing in the greater Cleveland area, according to Newburgh Heights police chief John Majoy.

That story has made a few national outlets. Pretty alarming stuff, and those kids mostly being runaways is nonsense and we know it.

Is it me or has crime really been getting out of control here. Honestly I never would step foot in Slavic Village, frankly won't even drive through it any more. Now people are getting carjacked daily downtown, from the one at Thirsty Parrot to the browns players getting carjacked and another just having it stolen out of his lot. I used to live downtown, and frankly, I'm even starting to think twice of even visiting downtown now. How does a city just allow crime to get this bad. I hardly doubt it was this dangerous in the 80s. Atleast in the 80s you still had relatively safe neighborhoods.

I took my bike from Ohio City to a diner in Slavic Village for breakfast on Saturday - as I do at least twice a month. Somehow I escaped the roaming throngs of lawless gangs and Mad Max riding with his turret in the back of an armored F-150. Pray for me.

I literally watched a homicide happen across the street from my house less than a month ago and I'm not even buying off on this.

I took my young children to Mill Creek Falls and followed it up with ice cream from Daisy's on Fleet.  I must be an irresponsible parent to take children to a war zone.

Hahahahaha this is phenomenal.

I'm not a progressive, I come from a family of cops and firefighters, and even I'm like "Okay calm down, guy, it's okay to go outside."

We go to Sokol Center in Slavic Village for my son's gymnastics every Friday night. He does gymnastics inside and outside. Inside he does flips on the parallel bars. Outside we dodge the gunfire.

Funny can't remember the last time someone was shot at Crocker Park just for existing and being an innocent bystander. I guess my irrational fear is from being a racist and not from the fact of crime data when you compare said Crocker Park vs Slavic Village or as a whole Cleveland vs say Pittsburgh.
