March 19, 200619 yr East 65th between Union and 490 is not that bad. The 2 murders there this year are attributed to that gang of 14 and 15 year old pieces of s%$t that have since been apprehended. Including E55th and Fleet on your list is valid and it pains me to admit that. I grew up just north of Fleet on 55th and have great memories of it, but in the last ten years things have gotten progressively worse. I think a big part of it may be the fact that a lot of residents of CMHA housing at Riverview (Ohio City) and Valley View Estates (Tremont) have been displaced by their demolition and have moved into Slavic Village.

I believe the displacement to Slavic Village is 100% correct, but the 2 homicides at Fleet and E. 55th are 2 different murders and neither is related to the "goonies gang". Both were people shot in the head and found in the street on 2 separate occasions. The "goonies" murder was an old lady who fell after being mugged and she died later in the hospital from internal injuries.
March 20, 200619 yr I have to agree with ColDayMan's opinion (and this is ONLY my opinion) about OTR vs. Arlington in Akron, at least regarding the "feel" of each neighborhood. Back in the day, my ex lived with his grandmother on Talbot Avenue (off Arlington south of I-76). Sure, I stuck out like a sore thumb but I never felt like stepping out of the car for a minute would be a horrible idea (walking around taking in the sights is another story). When I visited my friends in Cincy a few years back and we went to Club Clau - we parked a block away and as others have pointed out - the criminal element is right there (or in our case, right across the street, making deals with other nightlifers walking to and fro). A lot of the perception has to do with the built environment (OTR is more dense and adjacent to the CBD, Arlington becomes quickly residential/mixed-use the further south you go.). I'd have to say the "worst" (again, only my opinion) areas I've personally visited in Cleveland are East 105th south of St. Clair, and Forest Avenue off East 116th - I've never been to places like Garden Valley and I don't think I'm missing out on anything :-) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
March 20, 200619 yr Drug dealing is absolutely rampant on East 105th and on Ansel, on the other side of Rockefeller Park. My theory is this- drug dealers, like retail operators, care about access for their customers. MLK ensures that customers can drop of the highway and then zoom in and out of the scene of the crime real quick. Ergo, the nearest through streets on either side become the best location for doing business.

April 12, 200619 yr Has anybody ever been down the one-way streets next to East Cleveland's city hall??? I saw them today for the first time and would like to comment on what I saw. I was in complete shock at how deteriorated these 3-4 streets were.. considering they are adjacent to city hall! Every single building/apartment complex was boarded up, filled with grafitti top to bottom, and all the windows were shattered. There were some apartment buildings that had outdoor corridors and were filled with piles of garbage and the architectural design on the buildings makes me think these were former public housing units that are now vacated. It was the kind of building that had exterior hallways leading towards the rear of the building (there's a reason they don't build 'em this way anymore..), similar to that of the Outhwaite Homes on E. 55th and Community College Dr. There was one grafitti artist who wrote, "Don't go down these dirty paths" --- there were 9 foot fences with groups of men just sitting on the ground behind them like they were stuck in a prison. Not sure how anybody could possibly be living in these conditions anyways. I can't even begin to imagine how this segment of the city became so diminished. This is like the worst of the Cicero or Bronx times two.. I wish I had my camera, but I'm not so sure I'd be willing to start snapping pictures down there anyways. The area I am referring to in this post is: Van Buren, Roxford, and Marbles Rd., all three which are located at the 14300 block of Euclid Avenue in the city of East Cleveland. A quick visit to the city's website would make you think East Cleveland is anything but run down.
April 14, 200619 yr Add 2 more homicides to Cleveland this week: Skip-and-run by a school bus at W. 118th and Lorain Avenue on April 13th, 2006. and The Cleveland rapper who was killed at Stonebridge on the west bank of the flats earlier in the week. Making it 24 for the year thru 4/14/06.
April 14, 200619 yr KJP....it makes you wonder why such an A-HOLE is walking the streets! Bizbiz...how does that stack up to this time last year? Also...I hope with many of the new residential project happening and planned for the downtown area, making it a denser residential area...I hope CPD would think about puting some police on foot patrol in these areas.
April 14, 200619 yr ^ Or at least bicycle patrols. I wrote an article about five year ago when a North Olmsted bicycle patrol officer caught up to and pulled over a Corvette. Of course, on Lorain Road near the mall, that's probably no great challenge! April 14, 200619 yr I agree....bikes or foot patrol would be nice...it just gives people a sense of protection and makes a better connection with the community. There is another CPD cadet class going to start soon, and before they hire them, all the laid off guys will get their jobs back...hopefully they will have enough officers to do something like this.
April 16, 200619 yr Sunday 4/16/06.. reports of two more homicides in Cleveland this weekend: The first one was a shooting outside of a Miles Road bar where two men were shot at, one of which died. He was a resident of Maple Heights. I can not get the address/location of the bar yet, all I know is that it was on Miles Road in the city of Cleveland. This is the second homicide this weekend involving people from Maple Heights. As reported on Friday night, two men were shot in the 15300 block of Bartlett leaving one dead and the other in critical condition. All five of the suspects taken into custody are from Maple Heights. The victim(s) however, were/are from Cleveland. Second homicide to report for today (well, right now it's not listed as a homicide but I'm sure it will become one after the coroner performs an autopsy): a male body was pulled up from Lake Erie at E. 55th St. near the marina, very close to Quay 55. That makes 5 homicides in one week in the city of Cleveland. 1. Local rapper who was killed outside Stonebridge 2. Hit-and-run at W. 118th/Lorain, the victim was hit by a school bus and Dennis Kucinich was the one who found the body in the road, as it happened right outside of his office. 3. Drive-by shooting at E. 153/Bartlett (aforementioned) leaving 1 dead, 1 critical 4. Bar shooting on Miles Road 5. Body pulled up from Lake Erie at E. 55th. #1 and #2 are both "big stories" in my opinion but got very little coverage, however, the school bus incident is currently being investigated as a possible accident that the driver was unaware of what they did. Another big story this week was the arrest of Mayor Frank Jackson's granddaughter along with her friend or boyfriend who was also arrested for having 3 guns and drugs on him at a gas station on Woodland/E. 55th.

April 20, 200619 yr A suspect was arrested.... http://www.wkyc.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=51055 AKRON -- Police have arrested a suspect after a stabbing on board an RTA trolley. He's 45-year-old Darrell Livingston of Cleveland. Channel 3 first showed you the surveillance tape of the attack yesterday involving a fight between two passengers. That tape generated leads for police and late Wednesday afternoon, the tips led Akron police to an address on Rhodes Avenue, where they say they took Livingston into custody. He's being held in Akron, pending a charge of felonious assault. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

April 22, 200619 yr How about this one..... Business Closes As Police Close In 04-21-2006 9:23 AM (Cleveland, OH) -- Cleveland police say the operators of a "disreputable" business somehow found out about a raid before it happened. Police officials and Mayor Frank Jackson were set to host a made-for-media shutdown of the business Thursday near Miles Avenue and East 131st Street. Instead, they found the undisclosed location closed for the day. The mayor says the raid will happen on another day. The business is reportedly associated with drugs, gambling, and prostitution. April 22, 200619 yr Hey, let's not forget about the fire truck that was caught in the cross fire in the middle of the night a few days ago.....luckily the only casualty was the fire engine...from what I understand, the two groups of people that were having the beef, jumped into their cars and shot at each other as they were headed down the street. The firefighters were busy fighting a fire, but had to take cover as the cars were going by....the fire engine stopped a few rounds.
April 25, 200619 yr Tack another homicide for the 4/22-23 weekend.. it was another "hit-and-run", this time on E. 65th near Woodland I believe. It wasn't even in the Law & Order section of the PD..
May 4, 200619 yr 4 separate homicides in 2 days in the city of Cleveland (5-2 and 5-3): 27 yr old female in the 600 block of E. 107th St. 22 yr old male in 12000 block of Griffing Ave. 22 yr old male in 2300 block of Community College Ave. 17 yr old male in 3200 block of E. 135th St.
May 7, 200619 yr 3 more homicides in 2 days: e. 65 @ fleet - robber shot and killed (5-5-06) e. 102 @ buckeye - hit-and-run, 15 yr old in stolen car dies e. 34 @ broadway - industrial valley - bar brawl (5-6-06) plus a fire at e. 65 and woodland claims 2 lives, is under investigation, may become homicide later on. Thru May 7, Cleveland has 38 homicides.
May 8, 200619 yr I wish I was keeping track of all the homicides in Akron this year. There were 2 more on 5-7-06 and 2-3 others earlier in the week. I am guessing Akron is between 25-30 this year, maybe even more, which would already be more than the total number of homicides in all of 2005. And they aren't like Cleveland's homicides, which seem to be mostly hit-and-run, house fires, and robberies; the majority of homicides I hear about in Akron are bodies found in cars, fields, and in the street. I'm going to try and research this a little bit, but I have a feeling the Crystal Meth. problem in lower Akron (Summit Lake-Kenmore) is part of the problem.
May 9, 200619 yr Meth has yet, IMO, not even begun to get big here yet. It seemed to have started on the Western edge of the Midwest and has been working it's way to the East. It is popular because it has an intense high that seems to last longer than crack(NOT from personal use experience,I just work in the Fire/EMS service) it is fairly cheap to buy AND make, and pretty much everything you need to make it can be found in the local hardware store. These labs are not hard to make, and they can be a permanent set up in a house or set up in the back of a van. The drug itself is very addictive and dangerous, but from a work standpoint, these "labs" can be very dangerous as well. They are very volatile and have a high incidence of explosion if the "technician" doesn't know what they are doing. I am sure I missed a few things, this was just off the top of my head...
May 9, 200619 yr I saw a Frontline special about Meth a couple weeks back and the most fascinating part about it is how quickly it seems this epidemic could be stopped. They interviewed the guy who helped stop quaaludes by stopping phamaceutical companies from producing drugs with the active ingredient used to make quaaludes-a ingredient so complex, it could only be created in a porfessional pharmaceutical factory. For anyone who doesn't know, ephedrine (active ingredient in Sudafed) is another type of very complex chemical compound that can only be produced in nine parmaceutical labs in the world. The Frontline special showed peaks in Meth use when large shipments of ephedrine were re-routed, stolen or simply just sold to drug cartels. This same guy who worked to stop quaaludes wants to do the same thing for ephedrine, except (surprise! surprise!) there is resistance from the pharmaceutical companies, who feel it would put an undue burden on the public to suffer without their popular medication until they can come up with another. Now, I know having a cold sucks and everyone wants to get rid of it ASAP, but if this keeps some dirtball living next to me from playing Beakman's World in his basement and blowing up my neighborhood, I'll buy more kleenex. :-D Anyway, you can watch the entire episode online if you have an hour to kill: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/meth/view/
May 9, 200619 yr Well, Crystal Meth has almost no presence in Cleveland. However, in Akron we have a major problem! Summit County's city of Barberton and the Kenmore neighborhood accounts for more Crystal Meth labs than anywhere else in Ohio. The problem is serious and I read about labs being found at least once a week in the Akron police blotter reports. Barberton is right next to Kenmore (a neighborhood in the city of Akron). Both areas are right along I-277 and I-76. Everytime I'm in Kenmore (and I've been there a lot lately), I see some young person walking down the street totally strung out. It's a rough neighborhood as it is, so I guess a lot of stuff slips by the police; but how a drugged out person can roam the streets and not get raked in is beyond me. When I say "strung out", I am referring to a staggering walk, bloodshot eyes, red face, etc.. When I was there last weekend, I saw three people, two white guys and a white girl walking up and down Kenmore Ave. back and forth over and over. I was moving supplies from a building to my van and I kept seeing them walking back and forth, at least 4 times. They were totally on something, whether it was alcohol, meth, or some other drugs, I don't know. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if they were Meth users!

May 20, 200619 yr Should this thread maybe be renamed like the "Cleveland Police Blotter" or "Cleveland Crime" or "Cleveland Neighborhood Watch" or something? Doesn't seem like were really "comparing" crime to any other Ohio city any more so much as reporting about crime and different rough neighborhoods around town-which is cool, but the title is a little misleading.

June 5, 200619 yr "what's up with Lorain / Fulton area?" Look at any area that's gentrified in the past 10-15 years. The problems (poverty and crime which seem to go hand in hand) those areas faced have now moved to adjacent neighborhoods. Lorain/Fulton is adjacent to what? Ohio City proper (Market Square, West 25th). The potential continuation of the outward migration has raised a lot of concerns in outer-neighborhoods and inner-ring 'burbs. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
June 5, 200619 yr So what does that bring the grand total of murders to for this year? A detective friend of mine told me that Cleveland is on pace to surpass last year...WTF is going on in this city?
June 5, 200619 yr another murder on E86 or E89. 6 murders in 5 days. wtf? when is the police department going to start publishing real time maps so residents can monitor what is going in on their neighborhoods- not just murders, but other safety or quality of life issues? onecommunity? digital city? oh wait, that was marketing and press releases. we shouldn't expect real applications based on this platform, or should we? if baltimore can do it, why can't we? http://141.157.54.34/bpdmaps/police.htm
