Re: Ohio City that's ridiculous. Nobody saw anything? I'm glad I have secure parking.

I'd like to doubt that an Ignatius student would do that.

I wouldn't go as far as blaming the mayor. He's been around for four months and there's no way he's had time for the intricacies of the many departments he needs to fix. He certainly has atleast spent

  • The good neighborhoods are definitely nicer. More housing is being built in this city than at anytime in probably both our lives. Unless you were born in like the 50s.    I have seen absolut

You missed the happy hour I went to.  I tried to sing a Survivor song at karaoke.  There's a story in my eyes... turn the pages of desiiiiiiiire...

That song is a double diamond run on the difficulty scale!

.....I can't hold back!!!!!

You're absolutely right Clueless, I just checked a map. This was in fact W 28th, and not W26th.

Sorry, my bad.

The isolated street is W. 28th. That has Ignatius's football field on one side and the other side is the rear of Dave's Mkt and the Great Lakes production facility. It's been known for a long time that this is not a great place to park, at night anyway. If this happened in broad daylight then the perpetrators have gotten ballsier. I think W. 26th might have erroneously been mentioned.

Anyway, the Market District wants a SID by 2012 which would help fund safety patrols.

EDIT: I;m just talking about the small stretch of W. 28th that I alluded to. The stretch of W. 28th with Light Bistro, a few B-n-B's and some of OC's best housing is not isolated at all. I would think this doesn't occur over there.

To Rockandroller:  I went to the parking lot at the northwest corner of West 3rd and St. Clair and I talked to the parking lot attendant.  I explained your problem with a panhandler and he was unaware.  I suggest you point out this person to the attendant the next time you are intimidated.  In all honesty the parking lot attendant and his helper were less than friendly, but at least they can help you next time you have a problem.  Good luck.

Good man, TMH.  I will double up the pressure this afternoon when I'm down there RnR

I'm not sure that's the right lot. There is no attendant. There are machines that you pay with a credit card or cash, enclosed in a little clear glass and metal building. The lot across the street has an attendant, that's on the NE corner, directly in front of John Qs. Also the one that just north of my lot, that also has an attendant, but mine does not. It has a bank of 3 machines that you pay.

that being said, I did not see the guy this morning, but I saw the guy that I think may be his cohort up on the corner, on Superior. But he didn't come bother me so who cares.  The cup-shaker in front of old stone church was also gone, so it was a blissful walk to the building today!

Oh. It's not St Clair. It's w3rd and SUPERIOR. Across from the Renaissance. That may be where the error came from.

My bad.

Thanks though!!

RnR.... couldn't find anybody panhandling around that lot, but one of the DCA ambassadors was there.  His name was Eric.  Very receptive to your concerns.  He said to call in the guys description and they will let dispatch know and work with you to resolve your concerns.  2166216000

YAY. Thx. If he is there again tomorrow or any other day this week, I will call them post-haste. I already have their # in my cell.

Keeping with the new theme of this thread (panhandling and litter), who here is with me on needing a bottle and can deposit in the state of Ohio?

It gives a few of the panhandlers something to do during the day, plus keeps the outdoors clear of bottles and cans!

^ I second this motion!

Having lived in the state of Michigan for many years, I can tell you our roadsides and streets are just as clean as theirs.  Maybe cleaner.  Many panhandlers who "clean up" bottles & cans laying around also throw trash out of containers in search for a few more dimes....  And panhandlers can't cruise the embankments of the highways picking up cans either.  Besides, if people are going to litter, they're going to litter.  10 cents is not adequate deterrent.

Based on what Crime Reports says and the recent one I added, it appears that Cleveland has 17 homicides this year so far.

I'm sure the talking heads on PD.com will have a field day with this, but this is seriously ridiculous.  How can someone steal this much money and only receive probation?  If it was say $5k or $10k I would understand, but $173k?

Westlake woman sentenced to five years probation for stealing $173,000 from Cleveland State University

By Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio - A Westlake woman was sentenced today to five years probation and ordered to set up a payment plan to reimburse Cleveland State University $173,000 - money she stole by creating and processing requests for cash from traveling athletic teams.

I did laugh at this comment:

"Maybe she can move to Cleveland and run for city council, maybe even mayor...."

^Maybe would have been funny if talking about Cuyahoga County, but I am tired of people constantly imputing that government's corruption to the City.  Sure, there are likely some council members who have done some ethically questionable things, but neither the Mayor nor any member of council is in the corruption probe as far as I know.  Considering how much interaction City Hall had with DiMora & Co., I think you can safely say that City Hall doesn't deserve such unsubstantiated disrespect.  Say what you want about Jackson's policies, he is relatively clean..... for a NEO politician.

@clevelandohio, current homicide count is at apprx 26, up 7% from last year, so far

Thanks for that info

Around 130pm, there were many, many cops on or around I-71 south---both CPD and Ohio State Patrol--cops at some southbound entrances AND on the actual overpasses over 71 southbound lanes--at at least W. 25, Fulton, 130s---in addition to cars everywhere (shoulders, median, etc.), there was a group of (state?) police using all four southbound lanes in a group of about 20-25 vehicles all had their lights on, but there were other cars as well outside of this group trailing it and getting off at various exits. At the 71 - 237/480 split---it looked like most of the big group headed towards 237/480 (and not continuing southbound on 71.) Major chase? Major escort of someone to Hopkins? Anyone know? just curious! State troopers in the city of Cleveland is a rare sight.

Biden was here at a Sherrod Brown fundraiser at Prog field.

OSHP are on I 90 until mid October in Cuyahoga County as part of an annual speeding initiative, be warned

^Their "annual" speeding initiative lasts 6 or 7 months?  I think at that point it just becomes their standard job and no longer an initiative.

I read they're supposed to be on 271 as well.

I saw the interview with the passenger-not that sympathetic.

That drudge report footage of the transgender woman being assaulted is about as scary and depressing as anything I've ever seen online.

I was wondering why Drudge Report is reporting on a hate crime against a transgender...... then I watched the video.  Typical.

What's typical?

The ramblings of a homophobe.

What's typical?

Rhetorical?  Not like you to intentionally invite one of those "knucklehead", off-topic rants.

Perhaps the easier method for clarification is just to sort the comments in this yahoo story by "highest rated" as the general points of interest in this story from those commenters (I would bet my left nut) are exactly what led to the high traffic on the Drudge Report.  http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_videotaped_beating.  Whenever a DR story involves transgenders, it almost always is to portray them in a negative light, which is why this story seemed odd to me.

Benedictine student shot in chest during robbery attempt Monday morning, seeks safety on RTA bus

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A sophomore at Benedictine High School was shot in the chest Monday morning on his way to school after a man tried to rob him of his cell phone and school-issued laptop.

The 16-year-old made his way to an RTA bus traveling southbound on South Moreland Boulevard and Buckeye Road and started banging on the doors, according to a news release from the Cleveland Police Department.

Once inside the bus, the youth told passengers that a man tried to rob him then shot him. Witnesses on the bus called 9-1-1.

That is just terrible.

Wow that's awful.

Really glad I moved off that block.  Not a good block.

Shooting Downtown,

Three people shot in Cleveland's Public Square near Warehouse District

CLEVELAND - Three people were shot in downtown Cleveland near Public Square and the Warehouse District early Friday morning, according to Cleveland police.

The shooting happened at about 2:30 a.m., just as the bars and night clubs closed early Friday morning.

Witnesses told NewsChannel5 that the altercation started inside Club Allure, 75 Public Sq., and then spilled out into the street. Two people were found with gunshot wounds just outside of Allure, and a third victim was found outside XO Prime Steakhouse on West 6th and St. Clair Avenue.

http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/local_news/3-people-shot-overnight-near-cleveland%27s-warehouse-district

What is Club Allure? I walk by this spot every day from my parking lot (which had broken glass in it again in several spots this morning. Sigh).

This is not the first violent club to set up shop in the basement of the 75 building recently.

Clubs aren't violent, just the patrons :)

The last one had an evocative name like The Spikey Skull.  That wasn't it, but something along those lines.

As awful as this news is, Downtown still remains a pretty safe neighborhood.

Sure, downtown is fairly safe, but this occurred in one of our premier nightlife neighborhoods, and are residential boom neighborhood.  Districts made up of bars and nightclubs can never exist forever without crime.  It is just the natural cylce that they go through.  I have been saying for a while that downtown Cleveland is simply full of restaurants and bars, and there needs to be a better mix of retail and service related industries within them.  The trendy people get bored of going to the same trendy bar, which leads to a drop in revenue at the establishment.  The owner either restructures to a more casual hangout, or simply lowers prices which allows another crownd to take over the place.  It is just a cycle.  There is no saying that this can't happen to E 4th.  I have a friend that has lived n the Bradley Buidling for 8 years, and he is moving out because he claims the WHD is not nearly what it was when he moved in.  That is scary.

People will go nuts over this. Its unfortunate but its nothing crazy. The main thing with crimes like this(and a lot of crime in Cleveland) is that its things that will never happen to the average person. Random crimes are scary, but not what the majority of crime in Cleveland is. Im never going to get shot/stabbed selling/buying drugs. Im never going to get in some fight at a nightclub/bar. So when I hear crimes like that I dont get scared like a lot of people do, because although they happened, I know they have no chance of happening to me. Now if the crime was someone walking down the street and randomly got shot and wallet stolen, I would be more afraid.

Not to freak you out or anything, but bullets that miss often find unintended hosts.  I don't think it's possible to overdramatize 3 people getting shot on Public Square.  That's a big deal.  There should be at least one officer patrolling Public Square 24 hours a day.  Cameras schmameras.

Sure, you can always say that, but why not live on Kinsman somewhere.  Most gunshots are not just random people shooting at people for the sake of shooting at people unless it's a serial killer.  The scary thing about the story is there are people walking around the warehouse district with guns most likely doing drug deals.  That is the kind of stuff people simply do not want to be around.  What's worse is that they don't want to live around that.

On a side note, I do not feel unsafe in the warehouse district in the hours that I would hang out there.  Rarely do I go there anymore simply becasue the establishments and environment are really not my speed anymore.  However, if I was a 20 somehing single, I would not stop going down there becasue of this.  For the genneral population however, this is definately not a good sign.  People will view this as the flats all over again, and rightfully so.  You always have to realize that most people in NE Ohio are not logged on to UO talking urban politics and developement.  They take the State of the City for what it is, and what they hear.

I wish one of our elected officials or someone in a position of authority would take a tough stand against crime. It would go a long way to show residents, workers, and visitors that Cleveland is taking a proactive approach to dealing with crime.

I agree, I was just saying. This is still a horrible event, but some of the shit I will hear from people I know will be unbearable. Events like this shouldn't happen though, even though in Nightclub districts its almost inevitable. And they should definitely have officers around, especially when the bars start letting out. If every club had its own security that would help too.
